She has portrayed Mary Magdalene in “Jesus Christ Superstar,” Ronnette in “Little Shop of Horrors,” Annie in “Porgy & Bess,” and Mayme in “Intimate Apparel,” earning her a well-deserved Denver Post Ovation Award nomination for best supporting actress in a musical. Natalie's dynamic range and versatility were on full display as she embodied the role of Mother Wisdom in a new opera about the life of Mary Magdalene titled “Woman of Light,” earning her a second Denver Post Ovation Award nomination as best supporting actress in a musical.   As Mrs Colorado American 2023 she has lent her services to collect toys for our military children at Ft. The Enduring Legacy of Composer Jerry Herman

Composer Jerry Herman (Composer and lyricist; born July 10, 1931, in New York City) It only takes a moment to realize that Broadway's Golden Age is alive and well and thriving as long as Jerry Herman's around. "When they passed out talent," the legendary Carol Channing has said, "Jerry stood in line twice." Almost single-handedly, the creator of Milk and Honey, Hello, Dolly!, Mame, La Cage aux Folles and so much more has revitalized and nourished the all-American tradition of great and unstoppable show tunes. His music and lyrics have kept audiences tapping their feet, humming along, and wiping their eyes with tears of joy for generations. Even as often he's been underrated as being too easy to like in a world of dark and foreboding musicals, too entertaining, too tuneful and much too upbeat, the genius of Herman's deceptively simple songs cuts through any shortsighted criticism. "Jerry has succeeded so well in his mission that people don't give him credit," said Michael Feinstein, "because to be simple without being cliche is nearly impossible." Herman's genius, in truth, is not so much simple as it is subtle. For all his cock-eyed optimism-and very much in the tradition of his forefathers Rodgers and Hammerstein-a Herman musical always carries a message of timeless values, of humanity's triumph over hatred and ignorance, of happiness over despair. 1983's La Cage aux Folles, a smash hit on Broadway and a Tony Award winner in all three of its Broadway productions-and counting-is not only a bona fide crowd-pleaser but also the most sweetly radical musical of its age. Here on the Broadway stage, decades before the fight for marriage equality hit the headlines, was a pair of gay dads raising a family, and here was "...a man singing a love song to another man-I don't think that's ever been done in a Broadway musical before." Herman told The Washington Post that during previews in Boston "I didn't know whether or not they'd throw stones. The audience gave it an ovation." "By the time Georges and Albin-having weathered a son's passing ingratitude and a zealot's intolerance-walked hand in hand into the St. Tropez sunset, the audience was on its feet," The Washington Post reported. "What La Cage aux Folles celebrates, after all, is loyalty and love, respect for others and respect for self and, yes, even family. The good old values." Gerald Herman was born in New York in 1931 and raised in Jersey City. His parents Harry and Ruth ran a children's summer camp in the Catskills, where young Jerry surprised everyone by teaching himself the piano. Once, he recalled years later, "my parents took me at a tender age to see Annie Get Your Gun, and I was absolutely dazzled. I have one of those retentive ears, and when I came home I sat down at the piano and played about five of the songs. My mother was amazed." Many more would be amazed. At 17, he was introduced to Frank Loesser, who encouraged him to continue composing once he heard some of Herman's songs. He went to the University of Miami, joining its adventurous theater program and himself appearing in undergraduate shows including the musical Finian's Rainbow. His alma mater since then has honored this distinguished alumnus and today boasts the Jerry Herman Ring Theatre at the heart of its drama program. After graduation from Miami, Herman headed back to New York and put together a review of his songs so far: I Feel Wonderful opened at the Theatre de Lys in Greenwich Village October 18, 1954 and ran for 48 performances. He was just getting going. While playing piano in a New York jazz club called the Showplace, Herman brought together his friends Phyllis Newman and Charles Nelson Reilly for another review called Nightcap, which opened in 1958. This one ran for two years. In 1960 came Herman's Broadway debut, alongside material by Fred Ebb and Woody Allen, in the review From A to Z. That same year came Parade, also at the Showplace, starring Reilly and Dody Goodman. A hit, Parade moved to the Players' Theatre and it was during this run that a producer asked Herman if he would be interested in writing a musical about the founding of the state of Israel. Milk and Honey, starring Molly Picon as the ultimate Hadassah lady, opened in 1961. It earned Herman his first Tony nomination for Best Musical of 1962. He had arrived. It was David Merrick who brought together Herman and the first of his vulnerable but ultimately invincible heroines, Dolly Levi. Hello, Dolly! starring Carol Channing opened in 1964, ran for 2,844 performances, became Broadway's longest-running musical and has been revived often since. It swept the Tony Awards, taking home a then unmatched 10 including Best Musical and becoming one of the happiest episodes in the history of the Broadway musical. Mame followed in 1966, starring Angela Lansbury and teaching the world that in the toughest times "We Need a Little Christmas." What has followed amounts to a life-affirming body of work rivaled by few: Dear World, the underappreciated Mack Mabel, The Grand Tour, Mrs. Santa Claus, Jerry's Girls, and of course La Cage aux Folles. The theater world knew a good thing when it heard and saw it: Tonys, Drama Desk Awards, Theatre World Awards all followed, as did a 2009 Special Tony Award for Lifetime achievement, and a 2010 Drama Desk Special Award for "enchanting and dazzling audiences with his exuberant music and heartfelt lyrics for more than half a century." Right now in the 21st Century, we can be sure that someone, somewhere is singing a Jerry Herman song. That's one happy way we know the man's been right all along: the best of times is now.

Welcome to a new season of Broadway Nation — the podcast that delves deeply into the remarkable history of the Broadway musical, with a special focus on the Immigrant, Jewish, Queer, and Black Artists who invented it. My guest today is Tony Award-winning Broadway star Brian Stokes Mitchell. After a short break, I am excited to be back with a new season that will be jam-packed with fascinating Broadway history, including interviews with an amazing lineup of authors of some brilliant new books that take us back to the earliest days of Broadway and bring us right up to the twenty-first century — from George M. Cohan to how TikTok and the digital age have impacted the Broadway musical. Today, we start things off with a bang with a delightful conversation with Brian Stokes Mitchell, whose career spans over forty years on television, films, recordings, concert appearances, and, most notably for our purposes, ten Broadway shows. He made his Broadway debut in 1988 in a short-lived musical called Mail, and in 1990, he was cast as the lead in David Merrick's revival of the 1926 Gershwin musical Oh, Kay! He next went on to two very high-profile gigs — first replacing Gregory Hines in Jelly's Last Jam and then Anthony Crivello in Kiss Of the Spiderwoman. In 1998, his unforgettable Tony-nominated performance as Coalhouse Walker in Ragtime firmly established him as a true Broadway star, and the following year, jumping from musical drama to musical comedy, he won the Tony Award for his performance in Kiss Me Kate. His performance in August Wilson's play, King Hedley II, in 2001 earned another Tony nomination, and the next year, he took on the title role in Man Of La Mancha. His most recent Broadway appearance was in 2016 in George Woolf's behind-the-scenes look at Shuffle Along, but as you will hear, Brian Stokes Mitchell may be back on Broadway very soon in a new musical that he is very excited about.  In addition, our conversation today ranges from two tear-inducing new video performances that he has recently been involved in creating and performing: a Ted Talk with Leer deBessonet, which you can find at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zZNhuRIGQZs and "Hope" with Jason Robert Brown, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KJkqV2xwars. Also, his work with The Entertainment Fund and the soon-to-be-released video capture of their reunion concert of Ragtime, as well as a peek inside his process and approach to interpreting a song. TVC 652.1: Ed welcomes Joel Thurm, former Vice President of Talent and Casting for both Paramount Television and NBC, and one of the most accomplished and most respected casting directors in the film and TV industry. Joel's memoir, Sex, Drugs, and Pilot Season: Confessions of a Casting Director, provides both a backstage look at the boardrooms of New York and the executive suites in Hollywood (particularly during the 1970s, '80s, and '90s) and a history of how TV casting decisions were often made during the era of the three-network universe. Topics this segment include how Joel recognized, before anyone else, that John Travolta was more than just another teen idol; how Joel and Travolta helped convince Olivia Newton-John to play Sandy in the movie version of Grease (after Newton-John had voiced her reluctance to do the part); and how Joel first became involved in casting after working for theatrical director David Merrick in New York City. Sometimes it helps to learn from the long view. Dr David Merrick can offer such a perspective. He is an expert in marketing analytics with decades of experience in the field, so I was delighted that he joined me for episode 8 of this second season of our podcast. Many years ago he was co-author with the later great Prof Bob Shaw of the classic text “Marketing Payback” (which I have praised before on my blog). He is also the founder of specialist modelling & analytics agency Quantalise, whose econometric models and software set a gold standard in that discipline. In this conversation, he shares a wealth of practical experience, both technical and commercial. Unlike so many on social media, David has genuinely been there and done that, plus he has stood the test of time regarding the value he's added to his clients. He is a great Analytics leader for us all to learn from before he chooses to hang up his boots. I hope you enjoy this chat & can learn from his emphasis on mastering his content & argument. Hello Broadway Nation listeners! This week for the first time in more than 126 episodes some unforeseen technical complications have reared their ugly heads and those, on top of the tech rehearsals for the upcoming production of White Christmas that I am co-directing at Seattle's 5th Avenue Theatre, and some important deadlines for my upcoming book, have all come together and kept me from posting a new episode of this podcast as planned. This is especially frustrating to me because we are in the middle of what I think is a fantastic series of episodes about Oliver Soden's new biography of Noel Coward which I promise we will get back to as soon as possible! In the meantime, here is another of my favorite episodes Gypsy vs The Sound Of Music in The Golden Age Of Broadway which I thought would be appropriate since the The Sound Of Music opened on November 16, 1959, 63 years ago this week. Enjoy! The 1950s were crowned by four legendary musicals that went head to head for the “Best Musical” prize at the TONY Awards. In the last episode we looked at the 1958 contest of West Side Story vs. The Music Man,. In this episode I focus on the 1959–1960 which brought us Gypsy vs. The Sound Of Music. And you could subtitle this episode Ethel Merman vs. Mary Martin! Spoiler alert: There was a tie for the Best Musical Tony Award that season, but if you don't already know the story, it probably didn't end up the way you think it would have. As with the previous pair, there are still Broadway mavens that remain outraged over which show won, and which musical was in their view unjustly denied its rightful award! And in addition to Merman and Martin, the giants of Broadway that are figure significantly in this episode include: David Merrick, Leland Hayward,, July Styne, Stephen Sondheim, Arthur Laurents, Jerome Robbins, Joe Layton and, of course, Rodgers & Hammerstein, WARNING:: There are a few historically correct curse words used in this episode. This is a special POD SWAP editions of Broadway Nation! Last December it was my great pleasure to be a guest on Jeffrey Scott Parson's terrific show, A Musical Theatre Podcast, and this week I am thrilled to share that episode with my Broadway Nation audience. Think of this “pod swap” as sort of a “Summer Replacement Special.” If you are too young to remember those, then let me fill you in. Back in the heyday of television variety shows, the big prime time series would take a break during the summer months and be replaced by what they called a “summer replacement.” As a kid, I always looked forward to those because they often served as “pilots” for what would become the next hit prime time variety series. So, this week Broadway Nation takes a break and is replaced by A Musical Theatre Podcast. On this episode I join Jeffrey Scott Parsons to explore Jerry Herman's 1961 Broadway debut musical, Milk And Honey, which starred the great Yiddish Theater star Molly Picon, and star of The Most Happy Fella, Robert Weede. This show, which was set in (then) modern-day Israel, had a book by Don Apell, and judging from the script and production photos it featured extensive dance sequences and ballets choreographed by Donald Sadler that showcased a chorus of hunky shirtless male dancers wearing very short shorts, and the musical's triple-threat co-star, Tommy Rall. The success of the show put Jerry Herman firmly on the Broadway map and led directly to him being selected by producer David Merrick to create the score for Hello, Dolly! Jeffrey and I discuss all of that and more! As you will hear, there is a tremendous resonance and kinship between our two podcasts. Both Broadway Nation and A Musical Theatre Podcast take deep thoughtful looks inside the history of the Broadway Musical, its shows, and its creators — in a manner that is both critical and celebratory.  I feel certain that if you enjoy Broadway Nation you will love A Musical Theatre Podcast! One of the perks of Roger's days at Warners was the company was so diverse he got to not only interact with filmmakers but also people involved in Broadway musicals. In the first part of this special double episode Roger remembers working with the legenday Broadway producer David Merrick.who was trying to put together the musical 42nd Street. But first he had to secure the song rights from an old Warner Brothers movie. And things got even more complex for Merrick when the show's director and choreographer died at a very inconvenient time. And in part 2 Roger remembers his days in Harvard's legendary Hasty Pudding club and how its members thought they were punking stage legend Ethel Merman, only to have her get one up on them. Joel Thurm's new book SEX, DRUGS and PILOT SEASON: Confessions of a Casting Director (Bear Manor Media) is smart, sardonic, and perhaps best of all: filled with great dish. One of Hollywood's most admired and accomplished casting directors, Thurm worked in a business where people were still deep in the closet. He was the first person in NBC history to take a same-sex partner as his date to company events. When the AIDS crisis hit, Joel made every effort possible to get work-any work- for actors who were ill, so that they could get or keep their health insurance. You might have seen the recent New York Post story where Joel shares his experiences with Rock Hudson and Robert Reed. SEX, DRUGS and PILOT SEASON takes us on the wild ride of his career from working in the theatre with legends Pearl Bailey, Judy Garland, Ethel Merman, David Merrick, and Gloria Swanson to being part of the wise (and sometimes unwise) early career casting decisions involving Jason Bateman, Tom Cruise, Ted Danson, Farrah Fawcett, Don Johnson, Regina King, Madonna, Joaquin and River Phoenix and Susan Sarandon, to name a few. Thurm played a key role in many of the most pivotal casting decisions in TV history (including Cheers, The Cosby Show, Hill Street Blues, and Taxi)-and for three enduringly popular movies: Grease, Airplane!, and The Rocky Horror Picture Show. In contrast to Hollywood memoirs where the author attempts to lionize himself and get even with the everyone on the planet, Joel is a wonderful storyteller who is honest about his success and failures. Thurm candid about doing his fair share of drugs in his leisure time and acknowledges instances where other powerful Hollywood people did employ a casting couch. If Thurm learned that someone did have a casting couch, he would subsequently have nothing to do with them.

WHAT THE F**K WAS THAT ALL ABOUT?HOW NOW DOW JONES by The Original Cast (RCA, 1967)This is the second Broadway soundtrack that Captain Billy has covered, the first being Lerner and Loewe's Camelot, and even though as a small child I had memorized my parent's Oliver, The Sound of Music, and My Fair Lady albums, after Rock, Folk and Soul music entered my life, I lost interest in the musicals of the Great White Way completely. As I explained in previous episodes, many of the carts in my collection were not chosen by me; they arrived in big lots, and the experience of discovering some of these hidden treasures is akin to sticking one's hand into a bag of….. (fill in the blank). Despite its catchy title, this show was totally unknown to me, although it did run for 220 performances. It was produced and directed by Broadway titans David Merrick and George Abbott.  It was film scorer Elmer Bernstein's only Broadway composition; the book was by Max Shulman, of Dobie Gillis fame, and the lyrics were by Carolyn Leigh — a totally respectable crew.  The cast included Woody Allen's avatar, Tony Roberts, and the whiskey throated Brenda Vaccaro in the leads, and there was even a Tony awarded to featured actor Hiram Sherman for his turn as a crusty stock broker. Yet, somehow the collective memory of this musical was lost to the ozone pretty quickly. Maybe it's the complicated plot- (It was always part of the charm of these albums to try and imagine the story as I listened) - but here the labyrinthian plot and convoluted conjunction of characters - (tycoons, stock brokers, government officials, suicidal, mismatched lovers, tour guides, and “the voice of Wall Street”) - had my Pandemic-addled brain yearning for a YouTube training video. There was a hit that emerged from the chaos,  “Step to the Rear”, which you might recognize: it was even used in a Lincoln-Mercury campaign, and there is a charming video of Tony Roberts with a stage full of investor ladies from the suburbs marching around the stage to the song.Give this recording a try, and see if you can figure it all out.

While state law protects workers from being fired or denied a job just for having a doctor's permission to use marijuana, those protections become opaque when people actually take the drug — regardless of whether they do it in their personal time. “It essentially makes no sense,” Pittsburgh attorney John McCreary Jr., who represents employers, told Spotlight PA. Some jobs are specifically regulated by state and federal drug testing rules, but most fall into a gray area that leaves the interpretation of the rules up to employers and the courts. That leads to inconsistency and what employers see as a lose-lose scenario: Either risk a wrongful termination suit, or potentially allow an unsafe work environment. Read the rest of the article at sciencefriday.com.   The DART Asteroid Impact Mission: It's A Cosmic Smash This week, a small spacecraft slammed into an asteroid—on purpose. The mission, known as DART (for ‘Double Asteroid Redirection Test') was an effort to try out a potential means of planetary defense. NASA wanted to discover: Is it possible to change the path of an approaching asteroid by slamming something into it? On Monday evening, the DART spacecraft slammed into the small asteroid moonlet Dimorphos, which orbits a slightly larger asteroid called Didymos. Pictures taken from onboard the spacecraft showed the rocky, rubbly terrain of Dimorphos approaching closer and closer, then disappearing, while telescopes observing the impact and cameras on a neighboring Italian Space Agency CubeSat showed a plume of debris ejected from the asteroid. Dr. Nancy Chabot, the DART coordination lead and a planetary scientist at Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory, which built the spacecraft and is managing the mission for NASA's Planetary Defense Coordination Office, joins host John Dankosky. They talk about the impact, and what scientists hope to learn about asteroids and planetary defense from the crash.   High-Flying Trick-Or-Treat Delivers Rabies Vaccines For Raccoons Rabies is one of the deadliest diseases in the world. It's fatal in 99% of cases. Because of that, rabies prevention has been one of the most important—and successful—public health initiatives in the US. To contain rabies outbreaks, the USDA leads a mass vaccination effort from August to October to keep the disease from being carried by critters. It's an action-packed adventure involving raccoons, helicopters, and fish-flavored candy. SciFri's director of news and audio, John Dankosky, speaks with Jordona Kirby, the rabies field coordinator for the USDA's National Rabies Management Program. She's based in Milton, Florida.   Can Lanternflies' Excretions Be Used To Quell Their Spread? As the invasive spotted lanternfly continues to spread west in the United States, researchers are trying to better understand—and perhaps find a way to control —the behavior of the pretty, but ravenous, insects. Important agricultural crops, including grapes, peaches, and apples are especially at risk from the spreading infestation. As the lanternflies feed on tree sap, they excrete a sweet-smelling liquid known as honeydew. That liquid can attract other insects, and can also allow fungus to grow on affected trees. Writing in the journal Frontiers In Insect Science this week, researchers from the USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service report that chemicals in the honeydew may act as a signaling agent among the lanternflies—in some cases attracting others of the species. The finding may help explain the way in which the insects can infest a given tree in huge numbers, while leaving neighboring trees largely alone. John Dankosky talks with the paper's lead author, Dr. Miriam Cooperband of USDA APHIS, about her research, and whether the finding may lead to a way to bait or repel the invasive insects.   Transcripts for each segment will be available the week after the show airs on sciencefriday.com.

My guests on this episode are the original producer and director of the Broadway musical GREASE -- Ken Waissman and Tom Moore. This is the second half of our recent conversation. If you missed part one you may want to catch up on that first before listening to this one. This week marks the 50th Anniversary of Grease's move from the Eden Theater on the Lower East Side to The Broadhurst -- the first of the three Broadway theaters Grease would play during its record breaking eight year run.  And it fact, on June 5th, just a few days after I spoke with them, Ken and Tom hosted an anniversary party at Sardi's, where they and Grease's original cast had celebrated the show's opening back in 1972.  Grease alumni attending the event included co-writer Jim Jacobs, choreographer Patricia Birch, and performers Marilu Henner, Judy Kaye, Jerry Zaks, Carole Demas, Ray DeMattis, Ilene Graff, Barry Bostwick (via Zoom) and many more. All of them also contributed their memories to the new book: Grease – Tell Me More, Tell Me More – Stories From The Broadway Phenomenon That Started It All. I've been collecting photos and video of that event as well as the two recent Grease reunion shows at 54 Below and posting them in my Broadway Nation Facebook Group where I invite you to join me and more than 2000 other fans of this podcast -- who probably much like you are hooked on Broadway musicals.  Here is the link: https://www.facebook.com/groups/375627810176381 In this episode Tom and Ken share some fascinating stories about the development of the show including how they worked with the show's authors to trim the original "phone book" size script down to a manageable size, how they inspired them to add some now classic hit songs to the score, and how they all survived a disastrous first preview and then reworked and revamped the show in just three weeks. Even though Ken was at that time the youngest producer on Broadway, your will hear how he masterminded some brilliant old school style producing tricks that helped turn a near flop into one of most successful musicals of all time!   My favorite part of this episode is in the second half when Ken relates how he had to wheel and deal with the Shuberts and Nederlanders, and go head to head with the “Abominable Showman” himself –- legendary producer David Merrick. It's "The Modern Era of Broadway" vs "The Golden Age"! It's quite a story! Enjoy! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

"So here we are again", "talkin' in tongues" and proving "one man is not enough" as hosts Bobby and Kristina discuss ALL THREE musicals based on the literary work of Truman Capote on episode fifteen of My Favorite Flop: 1954's House of Flowers, 1966's Breakfast at Tiffany's, AND 1971's The Grass Harp.   ABOUT HOUSE OF FLOWERS Based on the original short story by Truman Capote, House of Flowers tells the story of two neighboring bordellos that battle for business in an idealized Haitian setting. The musical features music by Harold Arlen, lyrics by Arlen and Truman Capote, and a book by Capote. In the early 1950s, Truman Capote became involved in the performing arts. He was approached by producer Saint Subber to adapt his recent story, "House of Flowers", as a musical play for Broadway. Much of the writing was done in the Italian fishing village of Portofino; but Capote and Jack Dunphy found time to travel to Switzerland and Paris before turning to America, where Capote met again with producer Saint Subber and continued his work in the musical. After a Philadelphia try-out, the show opened on Broadway on December 30, 1954 at the Alvin Theatre and played for 165 performances. The director was Peter Brook. The cast included Pearl Bailey, Diahann Carroll, Juanita Hall, Ray Walston, Carmen de Lavallade, Alvin Ailey and Geoffrey Holder (who also provided a section of choreography). Although the show received generally poor reviews, the dance-rhythm infused score has been praised for its mix of blues and calypso. There was an unsuccessful Off-Broadway revival in 1968 at Theater de Lys. In 2003, there was an Encores! production, starring Tonya Pinkins and Armelia McQueen as the battling bordello madams and Maurice Hines as Captain Jonas, the smuggler. The virginal Ottilie was played by Nikki M. James, and the mountain boy, Royal, was played by Brandon Victor Dixon. Roscoe Lee Browne played the voodoo priest, Houngan.   ABOUT BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY'S Based both on the 1958 Truman Capote novella and 1961 film of the same name, Breakfast at Tiffany's tells the story of a free spirit named Holly Golightly. The musical features music and lyrics by Bob Merrill and a book by Abe Burrows, which was rewritten in previews by legendary playwright Edward Albee. The original cast included Mary Tyler Moore, Richard Chamberlain, Sally Kellerman, Larry Kert and Priscilla Lopez. The production was designed by Oliver Smith, directed by Joseph Anthony and choreographed by Michael Kidd with assistance from Tony Mordente, and produced by David Merrick. Despite the impressive list of collaborators, the project never gelled. The show underwent constant and massive changes in its script and score during out-of-town tryouts. The original book by Abe Burrows was seen in Philadelphia, then scrapped completely, and Edward Albee, an unlikely choice, was hired to re-write before a Boston tryout. Burrows was the original director but left when Albee was brought in. He was replaced by Joseph Anthony. On a daily basis, the cast was given new material hours before curtain time, and the piece was overly long, running nearly four hours. Burrows's departure resulted in low morale among cast members, and Moore was convinced that Merrick planned to fire her soon after opening night. Its original title, Holly Golightly, was changed when it started previews on December 12, 1966, on Broadway at the Majestic Theatre. Despite a healthy advance sale and much audience anticipation, it closed four nights later without having officially opened. Merrick placed an infamous ad in The New York Times, announcing that he shut down the production "rather than subject the drama critics and the public to an excruciatingly boring evening." In 2013, the musical was revived for the first time, using Burrows's book, under the title Holly Golightly, at the 200-seat Lilian Baylis Studio at Sadler's Wells Theatre in London, as part of Ian Marshall Fisher's "Lost Musicals" staged concert series. One reviewer wrote: "the show never seems to come alive [and though] worth excavating out of interest in the form, it is not clear whether it is stageworthy."   ABOUT THE GRASS HARP Based on the 1951 novella by Truman Capote, The Grass Harp tells the story of an orphaned boy and two elderly ladies who observe life from a tree. They eventually leave their temporary retreat to make amends with each other and other members of society. The musical features music by Claibe Richardson and book and lyrics by Kenward Elmslie. The initial 1967 tryout of the musical was performed by Trinity Square Repertory Company at the Rhode Island School of Design auditorium, in Providence, Rhode Island. Directed and staged by Adrian Hall, the cast included Barbara Baxley as Dolly Heart Talbo, Carol Brice as the black maid Catherine Creek, Carol Bruce as Verena Talbo, Elaine Stritch as the evangelist Baby Love. After the Providence tryout, Larry Fineberg optioned the property for Broadway, casting Mama Cass as the evangelist Miss Baby Love. However, Fineberg was unable to raise capital funds, and the producing rights were optioned by Richard Barr. In October 1971, the Michigan University Professional Theatre Program presented The Grass Harp with the university's music and drama departments supplying musicians and performers. Initially as an evaluation by the Broadway producers Richard Barr, Charles Woodward, Michael Harvey, and Associate Producer Michael Kasden. Celeste Holm, a close friend of Claibe Richardson, appeared in the Michigan University Professional Program's production as "Miss Baby Love". She was replaced with Karen Morrow for the Broadway production. The musical adaptation opened on Broadway at the Martin Beck Theatre on November 2, 1971 and closed on November 6, 1971. The cast featured Barbara Cook as Dolly Talbo, Carol Brice as Catherine Creek, Karen Morrow as evangelist Miss Baby Love, Ruth Ford as Verena Talbo, Russ Thacker as Colin Talbo, Max Showalter as Dr. Morris Ritz, John Baragrey as Judge Cool, Kelley Boa, Trudy Bordoff, Colin Duffy, Eva Grant, and David Craig Moskin as Miss Baby Love's orphans, known as the "Heavenly Pride and Joy", Christine Stabile as Maude Riordan, and Harvey Vernon as Sheriff Amos Legrand. The musical previewed and opened during a major New York City newspaper strike preventing advertising and reviews, with no advance theater party ticket sales guarantee. Richard Barr, Charles Woodward, Michael Harvey, and Michael Kasden gave the company the option of maintaining three more weeks for the productions' performance schedule, or closing after only seven performances, using the show's banked funds to produce a Broadway cast album. The musical orchestration was recorded in Cologne, Germany, with the Cologne Symphonic Orchestra ensemble. Returning to the States, the original cast was recorded in New York City, with the album released a year after the musical's closing date.

With his very personal, first-hand stories, we hear about Yul Brynner, Carol Channing, Stephen Sondheim, Lena Horne, David Merrick, Frank Langella, Eartha Kitt, Eva Le Gallienne, Arthur Miller, Richard Rodgers, Sandy Duncan, and numerous other theater greats with whom Ellis worked and learned the tricks of the trade. Among the shows he publicized are the original Broadway productions of Into the Woods, 42ND Street, Fences, The Elephant Man, The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby, Lena Horne: The Lady and Her Music, Big River, and the award-winning revivals of The King and I (Yul Brynner), Dracula (Frank Langella), Peter Pan (Sandy Duncan) and Morning’s at Seven. Call My Publicist! – The Starry Education of a Broadway Press Agent is about a love affair with the New York theatre, and like all romances it has its share of joys and heartbreaks. Peter Marks of The Washington Post cheered, “Call My Publicist! is wildly entertaining. I loved it." Michael Riedel, author of the best-sellers “Razzle Dazzle” and “Singular Sensation,” exclaimed, “Call My Publicist! is brilliant. I loved every minute of it."

Spoiler alert: There was a tie for the Best Musical Tony Award that season, but if you don’t already know the story, it probably didn’t end up the way you think it would have. As with the previous pair, there are still Broadway mavens that remain outraged over which show won, and which musical was in their view unjustly denied its rightful award! Drones are making a difference around the world and in your neighborhood are helping to save lives and protect property. One of the areas where drones have really shown their potential is with helping to prepare for, respond to, and recover from severe tropical storms and hurricanes. 2017 really proved to be a benchmark as UAS responded to hurricanes Harvey in Texas, Urma in Florida, and Maria in Puerto Rico. UAS have been used for search and rescue, damage assessment, power restoration, and insurance claims. In 2018 and 2019, with the arrival of hurricanes, drones have continued to show their amazing potential by offering a quick, cost-effective, aviation-based capability for many response elements.   As if emergency managers don’t have enough with the COVID-19 pandemic and what appears to be the makings of an above-average wildfire season, June 1st also marked the start of the 2020 hurricane season. When it comes to hurricanes, the state of Florida sits front and center as the U.S. gateway from hurricane alley, which is why Christopher Todd, your host, is welcoming Mr. David Merrick, an expert in the use UAS for disaster management. He also serves as the UAS coordinator in the air operations branch for the Florida Department of Emergency Management and director of the Emergency Management and Homeland Security program and Center for Disaster Risk Policy at Florida State University.   Key Takeaways: [3:05] David Merrick shares how he started experimenting with robotic technology and how he started flying drones. Just two decades ago, Indiana had no grape and wine industry worth talking about. But today, more than 100 wineries dot Indiana. The annual harvest (and the 2.4 million gallons of wine it makes) generates an economic impact of $600 million, sustains 4,000 full-time jobs, and pays $37 million in state and local taxes and $38 million in federal taxes. The growth is thanks in part to the Purdue Wine Grape Team, a group funded by a 5-cent excise tax on every gallon of wine sold in Indiana. Founded in 1991, the team is an agricultural extension program composed of enology, viticulture and marketing specialists who assist Indiana winemakers and grape growers. IBJ Podcast host Mason King talks to two of them — Bruce Bordelon and Jill Blume — about Indiana's wine industry, what makes it special and what to expect in the future.
