It was a loverly day when My Fair Lady opened on Broadway in 1956, and it quickly became a smash hit and beloved classic. Writing team Lerner and Loewe succeeded where others had failed and turned George Bernard Shaw's play Pygmalion into a musical - and what a musical! We'll look at the show's complex pre-history and thorny rehearsal days, and dive into the question of whether the show is a romance, or sexist, or both. Find one enormous chair and settle in for our latest episode!  MY FAIR LADY Book & Lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner | Music by Frederick Loewe | Adapted from George Bernard Shaw's Play and Gabriel Pascal's Motion Picture “PYGMALION” | Original Production Directed and Staged by Moss HartEpisode Segments:3:12 - Speed Test5:28 - Why God Why8:53 - Back to Before31:39 - What's Inside49:29 - How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria?1:13:03 - Our Favorite Things1:21:17 - Corner of the Sky1:25:25 – What Comes Next?Works Consulted & Reference :My Fair Lady (Original Libretto) by Alan Jay LernerPygmalion by George Bernard ShawThe Street Where I Live by Alan Jay LernerDazzler: The Life and Times of Moss Hart by Steven BachA Hymn to Him: The Lyrics of Alan Jay Lerner (Edited by Benny Green)Home: A Memoir of My Early Years by Julie AndrewsAlan Jay Lerner: A Biography by Edward JablonskiInventing Champagne: The Worlds of Lerner and Loewe by Gene LeesJulie Andrews by Robert WindelerRex: An Autobiography by Rex HarrisonMusic Credits:"Overture" from Dear World (Original Broadway Cast Recording)  | Music by Jerry Herman | Performed by Dear World Orchestra & Donald Pippin"The Speed Test" from Thoroughly Modern Millie  (Original Broadway Cast Recording) | Music by Jeanine Tesori, Lyrics by Dick Scanlan | Performed by Marc Kudisch, Sutton Foster, Anne L. Actor Steve Zahn Shares His Love of History and Kentucky Steven James Zahn is an American actor and comedian. He was born November 13, 1967 in Marshall, Minnesota, USA. He stars as Davis McAlary in the first, second, third and fourth seasons. He has also appeared in the films Out of Sight (1998), You've Got Mail (1998), Road Kill (2001), Sahara (2005), A Perfect Getaway (2009) and Dallas Buyers Club (2013). Zahn's early roles were split between movies, touring companies of Broadway shows, and TV shows. In 1992-1993, he toured as Hugo with the Barry Weissler production of Bye Bye Birdie with Tommy Tune, Ann Reinking, and Marc Kudisch. He played Phoebe Buffay's husband Duncan in a 1995 episode of Friends. Zahn appeared in several films in the mid-1990s, including Tom Hanks' That Thing You Do! These films garnered him enough respect that he was offered the starring role in the critically acclaimed indie film Happy, Texas (1999). Some of Zahn's most popular movies have been his later ones, including National Security (2003), Daddy Day Care (2003), and Sahara (2005). In Sahara Zahn starred alongside Matthew McConaughey. Zahn received his strongest critical acclaim for his performance in Riding in Cars with Boys, in which he co-starred with Drew Barrymore as her dim-witted, drug addicted husband. Roger Ebert, Richard Roeper and the BBC stated that the performance was deserving of an Oscar nomination. He also voiced Runt of the Litter in Chicken Little . He also gave dramatic performances in Rescue Dawn and the television mini-series Comanche Moon. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/uncommonhistoryofthesouth/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/uncommonhistoryofthesouth/support

Marc Kudisch is a Broadway staple. With three Tony nominations, he has played such roles as The Proprietor in Assassins, Gaston in Beauty and the Beast, and the sexist blowhard boss in Dolly Parton’s 9 to 5. On screen, Kudisch has carved out a niche for himself working for some of the greatest directors in TV, including David Fincher in Mindhunter and Barry Sonnenfeld in The Tick.  His current TV role is Dr. Gus, the intense, love-to-hate-him corporate coach in Billions. Alec talked with Kudisch right before Broadway shut down due to the coronavirus, just a couple of weeks into his starring role in Girl from the North Country. They discuss everything from the start of his acting career to Sondheim to Dungeons and Dragons.

I hurried through the prep and ended up with inedible red mushy hockey pucks. Such wasted time and effort and ingredients.  What wasn't a waste of my time, though, was a recent chat I had with Marc Kudisch. I met him at the Only Make Believe Gala after-party, and he graciously talked with me for about 15 minutes. From the business to Broadway and keeping it all in perspective, it was an informative and surprisingly honest chat about making it in theater and in New York itself. So I wanted to share my reflections from this impromptu discussion. Hosts Briana Phipps, Jacque Borowski, Marisa Serafini and Dakota T. Jones welcome guest Marc Kudisch to discuss the theatre musical of Beauty And The Beast. Beauty and the Beast is a musical with music by Alan Menken, lyrics by Howard Ashman and Tim Rice, and book by Linda Woolverton. Adapted from Walt Disney Pictures' Academy Award-winning 1991 animated musical film of the same name – which in turn had been based on the classic French fairy tale by Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont –[1] Beauty and the Beast tells the story of a cold-hearted prince who has been magically transformed into an unsightly creature as punishment for his selfish ways. To revert back into his true human form, the Beast must first earn the love of a bright, beautiful young woman whom he has imprisoned in his enchanted castle before it is too late. Critics immediately noted the film's Broadway musical potential when it was first released in 1991, who hailed it as one of the year's fines
