The process of personal growth is messy, and sometimes we make the same mistakes over and over, a discussion around one of my favourite poems: Autobiography in Five Short Chapters by Portia Nelson. I walk down the street. There is a deep hole in the sidewalk. I fall in. I am lost ... I am helpless. It isn't my fault. It takes me forever to find a way out. I walk down the same street. There is a deep hole in the sidewalk. I pretend I don't see it. I fall in again. I can't believe I am in the same place but, it isn't my fault. It still takes a long time to get out. I walk down the same street. There is a deep hole in the sidewalk. I see it is there. I still fall in ... it's a habit. My eyes are open. I know where I am. It is my fault. I get out immediately. I walk down the same street. There is a deep hole in the sidewalk. I walk around it. I walk down another street. Looking for a Reiki community? Others hit you like a train when you are completely not expecting it. Triggers don't play fair.'Broadly', there are two types of triggers. Emotional Triggers and Environmental Triggers. (Things going on internally and others are external forces).Triggers are often linked to unmet 'wants' or 'needs'. Remember, you can't be tempted by what does't tempt you!You cannot change what you cannot see - because it lives in the unseen/the unconscious. Change cannot begin until you can see the problem; because you have moved it into the seen - into the visible - into the conscious.Thereafter, there is a process. No quick fixes. Small incremental steps. One step at a time. Like the donkey in the well, with dirt being thrown down on it to bury it, you learn to wiggle and shake it off.You know there is a problem. You keep on keeping on keeping on falling in it. Learn to get up, dust off and get back in the fight. One day you will walk around it."How did I do that?". Because each time you were falling in it, you shook it off, got back up and got back in. You walked around it.Then, in the distant future, you don't even notice the problem. "Is that really possible Gary?" Yes. But no quick fixes and it is in the distant future, of consistency. Consistently maintaining sobriety. You have learned to walk down another street.Let The Kairos Centre journey with you. In today's episode, I shared an intriguing story that I recently came across, titled "An Autobiography in Five Short Chapters" by Portia Nelson. This story, written in 1977, uses a metaphor of a hole in the sidewalk to illustrate the repetitive patterns and choices we make in life. The story is divided into five chapters, each depicting a different stage of awareness and action regarding the hole in the sidewalk. Initially, the protagonist falls into the hole unknowingly and feels helpless. Gradually, they become aware of the hole, recognize their responsibility, and eventually choose to walk around it or take a different street altogether. I reflected on how this metaphor applies to our lives, especially in the context of adopting healthy habits and making positive changes. Often, we find ourselves repeatedly falling into the same "holes" or bad habits, despite knowing the consequences. The key takeaway is that we have the power to make different choices and align our actions with our values. I also mentioned my recent interview with Dr. Stephen Hayes, author of "A Liberated Mind," who emphasizes the importance of aligning decisions with personal values. This alignment acts as a compass guiding us towards a more fulfilling life. In conclusion, I encouraged listeners to reflect on their own lives, recognize the "holes" they keep falling into, and consider making different choices to walk down a new path. Change is challenging and scary, but it is essential for achieving different outcomes and personal growth. Thank you for tuning in, and I hope this story inspires you to take control of your journey and make empowering decisions. Have a wonderful and blessed day, and I'll see you tomorrow! She describes being in a romantic entanglement and realizing that she was in an emotional black hole when she didn't feel comfortable sharing with her close friends what she was going through. Ress discusses recognizing where your inner critic thoughts came from, are you in your thirties being bullied by thoughts that were formed in childhood, before you even had the ability to form complex thoughts? At what point do you recognize your patterns? At what point are you responsible for the emotional 'holes' you keep falling into? If you walk down a street and know there's a big hole there that you're always tempted to fall into... why not take another street?

This episode is dedicated to spreading awareness about the existence and experience of detransitioners — those who pursued a medicalized gender transition and later came to feel it wasn't the right path for them. The detransitioner community is growing faster than ever as more young people realize they received inadequate and inappropriate healthcare. The complex experience of detransition is not at all captured by the political identity being defined in the public discourse on the topic, and the real hardships involved seem to be entirely lost as an openly acknowledged possible outcome of the medical transition pathway, a primary outcome of the gender affirming model of care. You will hear Sasha and Stella talk about how the detransition process is often a reckoning with reality. They speak about their experience working with detrans individuals and how it's not as simple as “landing on detransition marks the end of a medical process or experience.” It is more of the beginning of a massive psychological process. It is not always a straight line with a clear destination. And it certainly involves a complicated and unique experience for each person. There are so many unknowns, particularly about the long-term medical implications in the aftermath of transition, so we're learning as we go, seeking to better understand, empower and support the experience for detransitioners as well as others experiencing distress beyond transition. In this conversation, you will also hear Stella and Sasha share about the launch of BeyondTrans.org. A new project of Genspect's dedicated to meeting the specific needs of detransitioners, as well as those who are in a more uncertain space. Some people feel distressed about their transition. Many others feel more ambivalent. Some detransition. Others may not physically detransition, but their minds have detransitioned: they've moved on from an ideology that led them to believe they could become another person, and they've come to realize that this ideology can cause harm. Beyond Transition was established to offer comprehensive help for the varying needs of different groups impacted by medicalized gender transition.Links:You don't have to be Irish to be Irish — https://youtu.be/jAQl64syDTgBeyond Transition Website — https://beyondtrans.org/Book Cynical Therapies — https://criticaltherapyantidote.org/new-book-2/Breastfeeding Regret Paper — https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fgwh.2023.1073053/fullPinned tweet — https://twitter.com/redrobin9000/status/1603678082426195969?s=20Reddit detrans — https://www.reddit.com/r/detrans/Autobiography in Five Short Chapters (an excerpt from There's a Hole in My Sidewalk: The Romance of Self-Discovery; © 1977 Portia Nelson)https://palousemindfulness.com/docs/autobio_5chapters.pdfIf you liked this episode, more episodes you might find interesting:“15 — One Detrans Voice: a Conversation with Carol” —

Rekindling: Compassion Fatigue Solutions for Animal Workers

Psychological change doesn't happen overnight. But we wouldn't want it to because we'd miss the learning in it all. It's fair to say that the path to my own psychological growth has been a rocky one. I've failed more times than I can count, I've not kept my word to myself thousands of times and I've engaged in behaviors I wanted to stop and then hate myself over and over and over again. Your story doesn't just have one chapter, it has five. Keep reading. Don't put the book down yet. It gets so much better!! Here's the poem written by Portia Nelson that I share with you in the episode.  An Autobiography in Five Chapters Chapter 1 I walk down the street. There is a deep hole in the sidewalk. I fall in. I am lost….I am helpless. It isn't my fault. It takes forever to find a way out. Chapter 2 I walk down the same street. There is a deep hole in the side walk. I pretend I don't see it. I fall in again. I can't believe I am in the same place. But it isn't my fault. It still takes a long time to get out. Chapter 3 I walk down the same street. There is a deep hole in the sidewalk. I see it is there. I fall in….it's a habit…but my eyes are open. I know where I am. It is my fault. I get out immediately. Chapter 4 I walk down the same street. There is a deep hole in the sidewalk. I walk around it. Chapter 5 I walk down a different street.

Hello and I hope all is well with you. As I mentioned in my original Hiatus Announcement, I am going to reach out every few weeks, just to say hello, give some updates and leave you with a very short message for you to consider. Regarding updates, I am deeply involved in working on my next book, Stop Making Yourself Miserable, along with introducing an executive training program to help people enhance their personal growth progress and reach their deeper potential. And for your consideration here is a terrific short poem by Portia Nelson that I found quoted in the Tibetan Book of Living and Dying. By the way, Portia had a great mini-prologue to her book. She wrote:  My life has been a series of wonderful experiences. It's a pity I wasn't there for most of them. So, here is her poem called, “Autobiography in Five Short Chapters.”   Chapter One I walk down the street. There is a deep hole in the sidewalk. I fall in. I am lost... I am hopeless. It isn't my fault. It takes forever to find a way out Chapter Two I walk down the same street. There is a deep hole in the sidewalk. I pretend I don't see it. I fall in again. I can't believe I am in this same place. But it isn't my fault.  It still takes a long time to get out.   Chapter Three I walk down the same street. There is a deep hole in the sidewalk. I see it there. I still fall in... it's a habit... but, my eyes are open. I know where I am. It is my fault. I get out immediately.   Chapter Four I walk down the same street. There is a deep hole in the sidewalk. I walk around it.   Chapter Five I walk down another street.   So, there's quite a lot to digest in this little entrée of hers. I hope you have fun with it. Be well, and I'll catch up with you in the next update.

I use all kinds of stories and metaphors in therapy  to help people actually remember a point. I'm not sure when I started doing it, but there's something about a story or a picture that cements or anchors an idea in your mind. Just think about in Forrest Gump, the famous “Life is like a box of chocolates” and you'll understand. So today, I want to read you a poem that I use all the time in therapy. The author, Portia Nelson was an American popular singer, songwriter, actress, and author. In 1965, she portrayed the cantankerous Sister Berthe in the film version of The Sound of Music, and on TV's All My Children Nelson played the long-running role of nanny Mrs. Gurney. Her book of poetic musings, There's a Hole in My Sidewalk: The Romance of Self-Discovery, became a mainstay of twelve-step programs. Here's Portia's poem that can act as an anchor for you! “I walk down the street. There is a deep hole in the sidewalk. I fall in. I am lost... I am helpless. It isn't my fault. It takes forever to find a way out. I walk down the same street. There is a deep hole in the sidewalk. I pretend I don't see it. I fall in again. I can't believe I am in the same place. But, it isn't my fault. It still takes me a long time to get out. I walk down the same street. There is a deep hole in the sidewalk. I see it is there. I still fall in. It's a habit. My eyes are open. I know where I am. It is my fault. I get out immediately. I walk down the same street. There is a deep hole in the sidewalk. I walk around it. I walk down another street.” ― Portia Nelson, There's a Hole in My Sidewalk: The Romance of Self-Discovery You can hear more about mental health and many other topics by listening to my podcast, SelfWork with Dr. Margaret Rutherford. Subscribe to my website and receive one weekly newsletter including my weekly blog post and podcast! Are you creating your own darkness, your own hell? In this episode of Shut Up and Sit, Yedda welcomes back her mother, Austine, to shut up and sit down with her to discuss what the Emotional Guidance Scale is and how to use it to increase vitality, improve your energy, and change your life. “When you're in the downward spiral, it's a heavy, dense feeling… Upward is just a higher, more vibrant, light, energetic feeling. My life just got better, it got better on every level.” - Austine You'll gain insight into Austine's powerful journey to discovering the Emotional Guidance Scale and creating the viral graphic that goes along with the concept. She also shares how she uses it with clients to help them change their mindset, remove unhelpful habits, let go of the victim mentality, and be the best version of themselves they can be. Then, Yedda talks about poetry as a potent way to shut up, sit down, and be mindful, followed by a reading of a lovely poem by Portia Nelson. “The whole journey is about becoming independent, taking your power back, and realizing there's a connection between your thoughts and that you can feel the energy shift… if you can just think a different thought and create a different energy, you will feel it in your body and then you will know: I did that. Mom didn't do that.” - Austine   Resources: Watch Episode 2 with Austine: www.youtube.com/watch?v=L9_XuNkbbtk  Power vs. Force by David R.
