The August 1991 issue has a few pop culture topics to go deep on. Guns 'N Roses gets covered with a What Now concert review AND a review of Danny Sugerman's very pretentious-sounding book about them in the brand-new column Read It (though probably don't; it only earns one pip as the month's book bomb). Paula Abdul gets a bomb review of her new album Spellbound AND name-checked as "Paula Abdrool" in the Keanu Reeves/Alex Winter cover Q&A. Otherwise, we get a lot of material we might like more coverage on, like: Siouxsie And The Banshees' Superstition; Ethan Hawke's Mystery Date hair; Tori Spelling's 18th birthday party; and what Anne L. could not have foreseen would be an incredible revolving door of BulletBoys. You don't need an extra arm à la The Dark Backward to enjoy our commentary on all of the above and more!QUICK LINKS

This week on Make It with Mike and Kristen, we sit down with the wonderfully thoughtful Anne Lévesque — writer, poet, and author of Lucy Cloud and The Secret Lives of Public Servants. Born in Rimouski, Québec and raised in a small working-class town north of Lake Superior, Anne's story is one of courage, curiosity, and reinvention. She shares what led her to Nova Scotia — and why, after some early challenges, she chose the wild beauty of Cape Breton Island as home.   We talk about her shift from a career in the federal government to full-time creative life, how that leap of faith mirrors Kristen's own journey, and the ways Anne weaves creativity into her every day. Her insight into writing, identity, and belonging is both grounding and inspiring — especially for anyone standing on the edge of change.   Anne also tells us about her latest book, her cross-province tour, and the serendipity that brought her near our studio just in time to record this conversation. SPOILER: uh-oh, it's not been great – but it's getting better. The music industry has, according to Anne, stuck to one approach when dealing with mental health: and the results have been disastrous. So we talked about the damage that has been done and whether now, in 2024, things are changing – and are they changing fast enough? We also ask Anne if the big players, like major labels, have a duty of care to look after the mental health of the people it is making money from. Escuchar audio

The eighteenth-century Bank of England was an institution that operated for the benefit of its shareholders--and yet came to be considered, as Adam Smith described it, "a great engine of state." In Virtuous Bankers: A Day in the Life of the Eighteenth-Century Bank of England (Princeton UP, 2023), Anne Murphy explores how this private organization became the guardian of the public credit upon which Britain's economic and geopolitical power was based. Drawing on the voluminous and detailed minute books of a Committee of Inspection that examined the Bank's workings in 1783-84, Murphy frames her account as "a day in the life" of the Bank of England, looking at a day's worth of banking activities that ranged from the issuing of bank notes to the management of public funds. Murphy discusses the bank as a domestic environment, a working environment, and a space to be protected against theft, fire, and revolt. She offers new insights into the skills of the Bank's clerks and the ways in which their work was organized, and she positions the Bank as part of the physical and cultural landscape of the City: an aggressive property developer, a vulnerable institution seeking to secure its buildings, and an enterprise necessarily accessible to the public. She considers the aesthetics of its headquarters--one of London's finest buildings--and the messages of creditworthiness embedded in that architecture and in the very visible actions of the Bank's clerks. Murphy's uniquely intimate account shows how the eighteenth-century Bank was able to deliver a set of services that were essential to the state and commanded the confidence of the public. Anne L. Murphy is Professor of History and Executive Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. She joined the University of Portsmouth in March 2021.

Ohjelman toimittaa Sisko Loikkanen.
