Martine Hauwert ging tijdens In The Spotlight met Els in gesprek.

Today's guest was bound to happen. Meet Tex Mosely from Neverland Ranch Davidians. Tex and his band were suggested to me a couple of years ago by my friend Ian. I reached out and we tried to get everything to mesh but just couldn't make it work. A few years later, here we are.  Tex talks about growing up in Philly and having music all around him. His uncle was a professional bass player. Tex started playing guitar and even took lessons from jazz legend, Pat Martino! He began his life in music in Philly, but he eventually found his way to LA. He joined up with The Slaves and found favor with Concrete Blonde, one of my favorite bands. But after a while, rock and roll and substance abuse took its toll on him. But he found help, love, and safety back with his family in Philly.  After his recovery, Tex moved back to LA and joined a band called Neighborhood Bullys. They had such a good sound that they ended up being Suzi Quatro's band for her album In The Spotlight. But there's one odd thing about that recording and I'll let Tex tell that story. Tex's latest band is Neverland Ranch Davidians. It started off as a lo-fi project and wound up being his singing debut. He tells how he met the other band members, Max Hagen and Will Bentley and how he came up with the band name. Their sophomore release is out soon and it's an amalgamation of all Tex's influences (except maybe Pat Martino). It's called Shout It On The Mountain and that title tells it all. It's a rock album. That's it. Tex is a blast to talk with and shares great stories from his early days through the making of the new album. Pre-order it on Heavy Medication Records, buy the debut, and follow Neverland Ranch Davidians on the socials. You can't miss them. Follow us @PerformanceAnx, buy merch at performanceanx.threadless.com and send money through ko-fi.com/performanceanxiety. Now saddle up with Tex Mosely of Neverland Ranch Davidians on Performance Anxiety on the Pantheon Podcast Network. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Welcome to The Spark—your weekly creative pick-me-up from The Creative Boom Podcast. Every Thursday, we bring you a shorter, snappier episode filled with inspiration, creative news, and practical tips to carry you through the week. Whether you need motivation or insights, we've got you covered! This week, host Katy Cowan sat down with Khyati Trehan, a designer and 3D visual artist currently based at Google Creative Lab in New York. Khyati shared a glimpse into one of the most innovative creative spaces in the world—a rare treat! What stood out most was how she juggles working at the cutting edge of technology, collaborating on personal projects like visual designs for her sister's music, and decompressing with reality TV. She opened up about how she avoids burnout while staying energised and inspired, even in the high-pressure environment of Google. Khyati also discussed generative AI, emphasising that while it's a tool to enhance creativity, "writing prompts doesn't make you an artist". For her, AI is a collaborator, not a replacement, expanding what's possible without diminishing the joy of creating. If you've ever wondered how someone can stay ahead and balance so many creative pursuits without losing momentum, this episode is for you! In Creative News this week, Spotify unveiled new features for video podcasting, including ad-free viewing for Premium users and an audience-driven payout model. With over 640 million users, Spotify is rapidly growing its video podcast offerings to rival YouTube. Meanwhile, Bluesky reassured users it won't use content to train generative AI tools, setting it apart from platforms like X. While exploring ways to protect user consent, the platform continues to grow, now hosting 17 million users. And gaming is shifting toward live-service titles, driven by Gen Z's love of social interaction and self-expression. With in-game purchases accounting for 67% of global gaming income in 2023, these games are blurring lines with social media, hosting events like concerts and TV premieres. In The Spotlight this week, we highlight Creative Boom's feature on how design leaders are preparing for 2025. Despite economic challenges, studios are focusing on purpose-driven work, AI as a creative collaborator, and fostering internal culture. Leaders predict a future of meaningful partnerships and sustainable practices, ensuring creative work aligns with both client and employee expectations. Our Book of the Week is WipEout Futurism: The Graphic Archives, a deep dive into the iconic video game that revolutionised gaming and graphic design. With rare concept art and interviews, this book celebrates the groundbreaking work of The Designers Republic and the game's sci-fi-inspired branding. This week's Tip focuses on finding happiness in creative work. Strategies include balancing work with personal life, embracing self-expression, and practising mindfulness. Remember, happiness is a work in progress, built through small, meaningful steps. In our Letters to the Editor, listener Sarah Turner wrote in about this week's guest, Khyati Trehan: "I loved how she described AI as a collaborator. Her perspective reminded me that these tools can enhance creativity rather than diminish it." While Ben Mottershead shared his reflections on last week's chat with Dave Sedgwick: "I resonated deeply with the discussion on rethinking goals. Starting my own agency was a dream, but I realised it's not all it's cracked up to be. I'm now focusing on what truly matters." Don't miss next Monday's episode, where Katy chats with Barrington Reeves, creative director and founder of Too Gallus in Glasgow. They'll explore the shift from traditional agencies to smaller, agile studios and the economic challenges but great opportunities facing the industry. See you then!

Drawing from personal experience, Liezl shares her expertise and tips for making the travel experience less stressful when accompanied by babies and toddlers. From considering the timing of the flight to choosing the right seats on the plane, Liezl provides practical advice for parents. She also discusses the importance of packing wisely, feeding the baby during take-off and landing, and bringing entertainment to keep the little ones occupied. KEY TAKEAWAYS Consider the timing of your flight: Try to fly at night for long haul flights or during nap times for short haul flights to increase the chances of your baby or toddler sleeping during the flight. If traveling with an infant, opt for front row seats with bassinets. If traveling with a toddler, consider seats with more legroom or on the aisle for easier movement. Bring essential items like diapers, wipes, formula, extra clothes, and small blankets in a carry-on bag. Consider using a backpack for easy mobility. Feed your baby during take-off and landing: Give your baby a bottle or breastfeed during these times to help alleviate ear pressure caused by changes in altitude. Stay calm and ask for help: Your baby or toddler can sense your mood, so staying calm and positive can help them relax. Don't hesitate to ask for assistance from airport staff or fellow passengers if needed. BEST MOMENTS "The majority of airlines let you take your stroller or pram all the way up to the gate and up to the airplane door." "Remember to have some milk in a bottle ready to feed to your baby during take-off and similarly have enough left for feeding them during landing." "I find that the most tricky age to travel is roughly between the age of 12 and 24 months, the time when the baby wants to walk and they don't understand why they need to sit still "Your baby or your toddler can sense your mood. So staying calm and positive can help them to be relaxed." Liezl talks to Hannes Van Den Berg, a survivor of a tick bite, who contracted tick bite fever in the aftermath of being targeted by the creature. Hannes describes the effects of the fever, as well as what he has learned through the experience, and how it has changed his life since then. KEY TAKEAWAYS The attack happened during the COVID pandemic, and so naturally, the focus of all health officials was turned towards combatting the virus. This meant that other forms of health care were unconsciously sidelined, meaning the danger to Hannes was even greater. The results of the tick bite meant that Hannes' legs were amputated below the knee, as well as the distal phalanges of his fingers. Living with prosthetics ever since has been the ultimate challenge. Occupational therapy has since been doing all it can to teach Hannes to live with his new condition. It requires an entirely new way of living, retraining in every aspect of life - even the simplest of tasks such as walking and writing are all new. Anneke Green is the founder and owner of Pontem Developmental Centre (and franchise) in Bloemfontein, South Africa. She obtained her B.Ed degree in 2004 at the University of the Free State and continued to complete het B.Ed Hons and PGCE in Remedial and Support Teaching. Through her years of teaching at schools across South Africa, Anneke identified a group of learners who were being marginalised in mainstream schools on the basis of their neurodevelopmental delays, often in the form of anxiety, ADHD, low muscle tone and difficulties with sensory integration. Anneke joins Liezl this week to talk about her incredible mission, how she came to found the centre, and her exciting and innovative plans for the future. KEY TAKEAWAYS Children with neurodevelopmental delays do not seem to fit in the mainstream school system due to ADHD, impulse control issues, anxiety and other factors. Teachers have traditionally excluded these children. Children have the power and potential to be able to change the world one day, no matter how they function internally. All children need to be given the chance to learn, grow and change the world. The aim of Pontem is not to replace the child's school life, but to ultimately place them back into the school environment once adjustment has been effective. Pontem focus on a holistic development programme, including emotional, social interaction, and then cognitive. IN THE SPOTLIGHT is a quarterly feature where we revisit past Talking Apes episodes that focus on highly critical issues. For our March 2023 instalment we're featuring our Season 1 episode with disease detective Dr Tony Goldberg, accompanied by three brand new podcasts exploring disease ecology and the links between animal health, human health, and the environment.  Zoonotic diseases occur when viruses, bacteria, or parasites jump between humans and animals. Dr Goldberg explores how these diseases take a toll on us and apes like us.  In this episode he tells us about his quest to understand them, how we live with them, and his adventures in Africa trying to track down and eradicate a scary infection that almost wiped out an entire population of rescued chimpanzees. Tony's episode was originally aired in March 2021 at the heart of the Covid-19 pandemic which threw the world into turmoil, not only within our personal lives, but economically, culturally, and politically.  The pandemic brought to light zoonosis as a critical, prevalent issue and a constant existential threat to us all. Zephnè Weston was diagnosed with Functional Neurological Disorder as a result of placing too much stress on herself in order to achieve more and reach higher levels of success. Since recovering, Zephnè has been doing all she can to raise awareness of this condition and preach the message that our health and wellbeing should always come first before any concerns about career milestones. This week, Zephnè joins Liezl to talk about her story and why self-love and self-acceptance are more valuable than anything else in life. KEY TAKEAWAYS The experiences of our youth can shape the levels of drive and ambition we have as an adult. The pains of youth can directly influence the pleasures of maturity. Workaholism is often carried a badge of honour. As an attribute, we hold it up as an example of our worth, believing that it is somehow connected with our value. At the first sign of disorder with our bodies, we must seek advice and guidance from a professional. Even minor symptoms can be the signifier of a more deep-rooted issue. If you struggle with anxiety, which many people do, then we must recognise that it isn't why we were put on this earth. We are not meant to live in an anxious way. Nina Armstrong is a British Hollywood stunt performer and has appeared in huge TV and movie series such as I am Legend, the Bond-movies, The Amazing Spider-Man, Marvel-movies, Fast & Furious, Doctor Strange, Game of Thrones, Mission Impossible, Harry Potter, the list is almost endless. Listen in to In The Spotlight to hear about Nina's amazing career, what it is like to be a stunts performer and more about what drives her as a performer and as a person.  KEY TAKEAWAYS Nina's love of stunt performing is in her blood thanks to her parents who met on the set of Superman where they were both stunt doubles. Nina's parents were literally Superman and Lois Lane. Her Grandfather also worked as a stunt performer in the old Tarzan movies and her siblings work in the industry too. When Nina was young she would double for child actors, often in horse riding scenes. She got her start in the industry through her parents, funnily enough her father also got his start in the stunt world because of his ability to ride a horse. Nina's father is Vic Armstrong - the world's most prolific stuntman, according to The Guinness Book of World Records. He was Harrison Ford's double in all the Indiana Jones movies. In 2001, he received a Technical Achievement Academy Award (Oscar) and in 2002 the BAFTA Michael Balcon Award. His memoir My Life as Indiana Jones, James Bond, Superman and Other Action Heroes: The True Adventures of the World's Greatest Stuntman was published in early 2011 which Nina says is a great read! As well as being a great horse rider, Nina has learned to be a brilliant stunt driver and has appeared in the Fast and Furious series. It's not just about crashing cars but precision driving too. Every car you see on the street during a film will have stunt drivers in, as you can't just use extras. BEST MOMENTS ‘Stunts run in my blood' ‘I was always the horsey girl but I found that four legs translated well to four wheels' ‘You might get burnt, that's part of the job' ‘I try and learn a little bit from everyone as I go along' 'At the moment my tunnel vision is on my children - they are only little once' EPISODE RESOURCES Nina Armstrong - IMDb VALUABLE RESOURCES Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/inthespotlightwithliezlInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/inthespotlightwithliezlFacebook personal: https://www.facebook.com/lcolditzvanrooyen/Instagram personal: https://www.instagram.com/liezl_colditzvanrooyen/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/van-rooyen-liezl/ ABOUT THE PODCAST  In the Spotlight was born as a platform to share, broadcast and promote the interesting, wonderful and inspiring things that some of the people who crossed Liezl's path have done. That is what B Loved embodies, restoring people and empowering the broken, vulnerable, and abandoned to understand their value. Today on In The Spotlight, Liezel is joined by B Loved Founder Louis McLaren and his fellow Director Yolandi Venter. KEY TAKEAWAYS The B Loved Foundation has been in operation since 2008 as a B4i Project initiative, with the aim to encourage businesses to be part of the restoration of our society. The Foundation started out as a trust and later grew and established itself as a preferred BEE Socio-Economic Development (SED) initiative. The Foundation's mission is to instil confidence in companies by giving them peace of mind that their funding actually reaches the people it was intended for. Beneficiaries are carefully selected and supported by directors Yolandi Venter, Octavia Ephraim and Louis McLaren, who jointly take responsibility to ensure that the Foundation lives up to its purpose of making a proper difference in the journey of transformation. Although the legislation in South Africa originated as a black economic empowerment programme, the legislation allows 25% of all donations to be used for any race. This means that the foundation can help people from all backgrounds.  The B Loved Foundation has four main programmes which they focus on. The Regain Programme, The Youth Development Programme, The Community Aid Programme and Nurture SA.  The Regain Programme focuses on women and girls, with the beneficiaries being women who were trafficked as children and have experienced severe trauma over several years. It is a holistic approach to the process required to ensure independence and social integration of these victims. The youth development programme provides care and support to vulnerable youth in need, ranging from orphans to terminally ill children as well as young adults. The programme includes, but is not limited to, temporary and permanent residential care and community-based social services. The programme assists these children to experience a better quality of life by providing them with healthcare services, childhood development programmes and by facilitating specialised therapies for these children. The community aid programme mainly focuses on projects that involve the empowerment of communities and have previously included activities such as day care programmes, access to after school programmes, access to online resources, basic care, entrepreneurship opportunities and offering a place of belonging for those that need it.
