POPULARITY
Yesterday, May 15th, Racine native Zachary Scot Johnson posted his 5,000th "Song a Day" on Youtube. That's 5,000 consecutive days that Zach has posted a song . In honor of the milestone, we're re-sharing the interview we did with Zach back when he passed the 3,000 benchmark. That interview was done during the period when COVID had basically shut down Zach's live, in-person performance activity and the Song A Day project was an especially important means to remain connected with his fans. Zach is now busier than ever as a musician based in the Twin Cities.

just trying to make a little something every day, nothing precious, nothing too serious. could be a beat, a texture, a weird loop, whatever comes out. some days it clicks, some days it's a mess, but that's kind of the point. keeping the flow going, seeing what shows up when you don't overthink it.

16 bit JRPGs are a bit of a nostalgia spot for me. I would actually classify it as more of misplaced nostalgia in that I didn't play a lot of them growing up but playing them now makes me feel nostalgic anyway. This week on the show I was lucky enough to get a review copy of a recently released indie game that takes inspiration from the 16 bit JRPG style. I'm joined by Sam AKA Storm Beagle to talk about Beloved Rapture, an RPG made in the style of a 16 bit JRPG. He discuss what this game does to stand out compared to other games of it's kind, how effective it's story is, it's battle mechanics and we also debate if the phrase "You silver haired fuck" is a good line or not. As a small spoiler, this game kinda rules and you should go play it, but if you'd like to hear more about it, give this episode a listen! Following in the footsteps of Judy, Barbra, and Gaga, Debbie Wileman seems to be creating her very own A Star is Born story. Over the pandemic, Wileman began singing “A Song A Day” and posting videos of timeless songs on Facebook. With over one million views later, she became an internet sensation with global fans. Following two sold-out performances in November 2021 in London starring in Little Massive Voice, Wileman won the audience award for “Best Vocalist” with the Broadway World Cabaret Awards. Racine native Zachary Scot Johnson has been doing his Song a Day Project on Youtube for ten years. (Today is episode #3656.) He is back in Racine to headline a concert in honor of the anniversary: tonight (Sat., Sept. 10) 7:00 at First Presbyterian Church. In honor of his anniversary, here is the Morning Show interview I did with Zachary on the occasion of the 3000th edition of his Song a Day Project.
Jonathan is known for writing a Song-A-Day, which he has done every day since January 1st of 2009 - which means he is rapidly nearing 5,000 original songs. His songs have gone viral, gained him worldwide recognition and are now even available as NFTs. In this hour long conversation, we discuss the benefits of daily creative projects, what NFTs can offer artists, and so much more! In this interview I spoke to Jonathan Mann (@songadaymann), also known as the Song A Day guy, who has, in case you can't tell, published a new song every day for the past ~14 years. There's a good chance you've heard one of his songs at some point since many have gone viral in the past! He has also turned all of his songs over the years into NFTs which has formed the basis for the creation of a larger project called SongADAO Coop (for full transparency, I also own one NFT of one of his songs which is played at the end).During the interview we talked about his experience of making a song every day over the internet, how became interested in NFTs, starting SongADAO Coop, and how it's changed his practice and life. We also talked a bit about his interview with Dan Olson before his Line Goes Up video came out on his podcast Digitally Rare and what he left out, how he went about making sure SongADAO adhered to cooperative principles and the libertarian to cooperativist pipeline. You can also find the interview I did on Digitally Rare here a few months ago.Mentioned SourcesHow Jonathan started in crypto and ended up making SongADAOPodcast series on how Jonathan goes about making his songsIf you liked the podcast be sure to give it a review on your preferred podcast platform. On this episode of Rehash we're talking with Jonathan Mann, a songwriter and musician who is currently in his 14th consecutive year of creating a song every day. Yes, we also think it's crazy. Jonathan began his journey of releasing daily original songs back in 2009, long before Ethereum and NFTs were even thought of. He would post his work to Tumblr and YouTube, but was always on the lookout for new technology to leverage. Then, in 2017, Jonathan came across CryptoPunks and began looking into web3 and NFTs.We talk with Jonathan about his pre-web3 days of making money from music by entering video contests, the early NFT scene, and how he's managed to keep his momentum after all these years. We also discuss the rights and royalties of music NFTs, community building in DAOs, and how Jonathan's project, SongADAO, handles voting. Finally, we attempt to wrap our heads around token-gated registries and get Jonathan's picks for what NFTs will still be around 5 years from now.To continue this conversation and stay up to date with Rehash, you can follow Diana on Twitter @ddwchen and Rehash @rehashweb3. This 2018 conversation with Racine native Zachary Scot Johnson was done to celebrate the 3,000th episode of his "Song a Day" project on YouTube. We're sharing it again because Zach did his 3,500th episode earlier this past week. Zach performs a different song every day ... and many of these performances feature collaborations with other musicians. You'll hear an excerpt from his very first episode from September 2012 ... and you'll also hear his 3,500th episode in its entirety.

Here it is!!! Matt & Scott finally get to the first proper release on Creation. (Quality takes time, right??!) Your hosts debate the merit of the (much-maligned-in-its-time) record that started it all, and then they talk to the man himself, JERRY THACKRAY a.k.a. THE LEGEND! a.k.a. EVERETT TRUE. Best known for his writing in the NME and Melody Maker, as well as for his and books on NIRVANA, WHITE STRIPES, and THE RAMONES, Mr. Thackray is a fascinating and Zelig-like character. And we LOVE his later (post-Creation) EPs (links below), so you'll hear a few clips of those as well. It's a sprawling and wild ride, but trust us, it's worth sticking around for the whole thing. There's music, there's sadness, there's drama, there's brushes with fame. It's got everything, even a live song. A New Song Every Day For 10 Years (0:45)Guest: Jonathan Mann, Musician and SongwriterFor more than 10 years, Jonathan Mann has written a new song every day. Every single day. Originally this was just going to be a one-month. It was just a whim. But after he wrote a new song every day in the month of January 2009, he just wasn't finished. So, he kept going. Thousands of songs later, he's still going. Along the way he's learned a lot about the process of creativity. Why the West is Obsessed with WWII (22:40)Guest: Keith Lowe, WWII Historian, Author of “The Fear and the Freedom: How the Second World War Changed Us”Of all the conflicts America has been involved in, World War II seems to get the most attention from authors, academics, politicians and Hollywood. “The Greatest Generation” as American WWII veterans are known, is quickly shrinking as the 75 anniversary of the end of World War II approaches. What is it about that war and those veterans that captures the imagination and stokes such admiration? Biologist Pamela Weathers Has Discovered a New, Cost-Efficient Cure for Malaria (36:32)Guest: Pamela Weathers, Professor of Biology and Biotechnology, Worcester Polytechnic InstituteEfforts to fight malaria have stalled out in recent years, according to the World Health Organization, and one of the reasons is drug resistance. The parasite that causes malaria is developing defenses against the best medicines currently available to treat the illness. The expense of those medicines is another challenge facing the global malaria response. Both of the cost and drug resistant problems might be solved by a plant. Biologist Pamela Weathers has found evidence that drying and grinding the leaves of a certain plant may treat malaria better than current drugs. The Chinese Workers Who Built America's Railroad (49:09)Guest: Gordon H. Chang, Professor of American History, Stanford University, Author of “Ghosts of Gold Mountain: The Epic Story of the Chinese Who Built the Transcontinental Railroad”The Transcontinental railroad was a triumph of American grit and ingenuity when it was completed 150 years ago. But the work was done largely by immigrant workers –and the most technically difficult stretches of rail through the Sierra Nevada mountains were laid by workers from China. Those workers, however, were almost invisible at the grand Golden Spike ceremony commemorating the railroad's completion in 1869. Adventures of a Theme Park Journalist (1:09:47)Guest: Robert Niles, Editor of ThemeParkInsider.com and Contributing Columnist for the Orange County RegisterTheme parks can be magical with that thrill of anticipation when you're about to drop on a rollercoaster, spending time with family, and, of course, the nostalgia. But theme parks can also be a nightmare with the hordes of people, crying children, and overpriced food. New Research May Allow Diagnosis of CTE in Living People (1:21:54)Guest: Robert Stern, Co-Founder and Director of Clinical Research, Boston University CTE CenterRepeated head trauma ranging from full-blown concussions to the constant rattling of the brain inside the skull that can happen during impact sports, is believed to be the culprit in a disease called Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy–or CTE. It was first diagnosed in a former NFL player 17 years ago and over 100 athletes, military veterans and victims of abuse have been diagnosed with it since. But the problem is, doctors can only diagnose CTE by cutting open a person's brain after they've died.
