Sally Gary is founder and director of CenterPeace, a 501(c)(3) non-profit ministry dedicated to creating space for conversation about faith and sexuality. Growing up in Churches of Christ in the ‘60s & ‘70s, Sally has a great love for the spiritual heritage that first introduced her to Jesus and instilled in her a strong faith. But as a gay Christian, she knows firsthand the pain of wrestling with her own faith and sexuality, and how difficult it can be to stay connected to church, to Christianity, to God with no support from your faith community. This is what drives Sally's passion for CenterPeace, the ministry she founded in 2006 to create a place of belonging for LGBTQ+ Christians, encouraging them to hold onto faith and stay connected to God.For over 16 years, CenterPeace has been building community for sexual minorities, hosting online and in-person retreats and other resources for nurturing the faith of LGBTQ+ individuals. CenterPeace also hosts retreats for families of LGBTQ+ youth, and workshops for churches and schools, and other organizations to foster greater inclusion of the LGBTQ+ community. Since 2009, CenterPeace has hosted a national conference featuring keynote speakers such as Justin Lee and Matthew Vines. The conference has attracted thousands over the years – LGBTQ+ Christians, church leaders, parents, and allies – from across the globe, for the purpose of learning how to love and embrace the LGBTQ+ community in our midst and beyond. This year's CenterPeace Conference is in Dallas, Texas, at Wilshire Baptist – a fully open and affirming Baptist church – November 3 – 5. Jeff Chu of “Evolving Faith” is the featured keynote speaker, along with Justin and Matthew, Joel Hollier from Australia and Staci Frenes, singer/songwriter from Los Angeles. AND Rocky Roggio, director and creative genius behind the new film 1946, a documentary about mistranslation in Scripture.Sally holds bachelor's and master's degrees in communication from Abilene Christian University and a Doctor of Jurisprudence degree from Texas Tech University School of Law. A former high school speech and debate coach, trial lawyer and communication professor, Sally is a teacher at heart. Most of all, Sally is dedicated to serving queer youth, helping them know they are loved by God and that they always belong. Everywhere. The author of Affirming: A Memoir of Faith, Sexuality, and Staying in the Church, Sally currently resides in Dallas, Texas, with her wife, Karen, and their miniature dapple dachshund, Rudy. For more information about CenterPeace, visit centerpeace.net and follow on social media:Facebook – facebook.com/centerpeaceincInstagram - @centerpeaceinc

During my time as a pastor in the Evangelical Covenant Church, I was in an ongoing conversation about the relationship between LGBTQ folks and local churches. And over the years, regardless of all the different kinds of settings in which that conversation was happening, it kept bringing me back to this very particular biblical imagery. Moses and his people were on the edge of a body of water that they could not safely cross with the armies of Egypt, bearing down on them from behind an impossibility. Any change necessary for a peaceful, free future was just off the table, something very new, something not just unprecedented, but unexpected and very unlikely would need to happen. It has pretty much always felt that same way to me in the institutional conversation about sexuality and gender and identity, and communal religious practice, that any change necessary in order for a peaceful, connected communal future, to be possible just seemed off the table. For that reason, then for several years, I've turned my attention to places in which I saw actual newness, and that was almost always in relationship. It was almost always happening on a level that the institutional conversation was too busy or too noisy, to notice. But as quiet as some of those spaces and moments might have been, they continue to grant me deep and sincere hope for a future. I can't see it. Staci Frenes story is one of those spaces and places and it was a joy to reconnect with her in conversation. Check it out.

Staci Frenes is a Christian author, singer/songwriter and speaker. Her new book Love Makes Room is about the process by which her heart and faith grew when her daughter came out as gay. As someone with a conservative Christian background, When Staci Frenes learned her teenage daughter was gay, she found her dreams for the future—along with her lifelong faith—collapsing around her. Coming to terms with a new reality was a challenge, and an invitation, to make room for many things along the way: the inevitability of uncertainty, hope in the midst of loss, awkward and tough conversations, an expanding faith, and a greater understanding of how people are more the same than different. Staci and her husband live in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Staci Frênes joins Andy to discuss her book Love Makes Room and other things I learned When my Daughter came out. “love makes room” When Staci Frenes learned her teenage daughter was gay, she found her dreams for the future—along with her lifelong faith—collapsing around her. Coming to terms with a new reality was a challenge, and an invitation, to make room for many things along the way: the inevitability of uncertainty, hope in the midst of loss, awkward and tough conversations, an expanding faith, and a greater understanding of how people are more the same than different. In Love Makes Room, Frenes helps readers see that a reimagined future may look different than our old hoped-for pictures of ourselves and our families, but it can also be wider, deeper, and more fulfilling than we ever dreamed. About Staci Christian music artist Staci Frenes has spent the last 25 years singing and leading worship in churches, at Christian conferences, women's retreats and other faith-based venues. This UC-Berkeley graduate, mom and former English teacher turned her lifelong love of music into a full-time vocation, forming her own publishing company and record label. She built a successful independent career, releasing ten albums of original music and landing multiple film and television placements, including "America's Next Top Model", "The Biggest Loser," and "Nashville." Staci added author and speaker to her resume in 2014 with her self-published book, "Flourish", about how to cultivate a life in which our unique gifts find their full expression. Her most recent book reflects a season of deep, profound changes in her faith and family life: "Love Makes Room" is a memoir about coming to accept and understand her daughter's gay orientation within the context of her deeply-rooted Christian faith. Articulate, authentic and hopeful, Staci Frenes writes and speaks about the truths that resonate in every aspect of life, and she is confident that the process can be as beautiful as the finish. I sat down with Staci Frenes author of Love Makes Room which documents Staci's journey of moving from a non-affirming to an affirming position when her daughter came out. Staci and I talk about the painful journey of losing friends in the Evangelical Church over this decision and how she and her daughter have found healing on the other side along with understanding that God's love is bigger and wider than what we are sometimes lead to believe. We talk to a lover of words, Staci Frenes about her life, her writing, her music, and her new book, Love Makes Room. Staci shares, for the first time, revising a headspace from over a decade ago among friends and family and how that informed her latest offering. Bon Iver inspired a powerful conversation that led to this book being formed. Moose and Staci are inspired by Dani Shapiro, and we celebrate Abby being her own snowman. Staci's blog "What I Learned About Love" was a game-changer and being picked up by the Huffington Post was a career earthquake. We are only as sick as our secrets is an a-ha moment for Moose (and Staci) and a study of theology reveals a lot about damaging interpretations of Scripture. Change is inevitable and oftentimes painful. Staci Frenes understands this fact as well as any of us. With the release of her latest album, Unpathed Waters, Undreamed Shores, on December 16, 2016, we sat down to discuss the nature of change and how it is represented in these songs. Amongst other topics, we dig into the challenges and benefits of a good artist/producer relationship and what it means to embrace the difficulties in life. For the past several months, we've been watching Facebook as our friend and recent guest, Staci Frenes, shares the journey of writing for a new album as it unfolds. She recently launched a Kickstarter in order to raise funds to produce the album. For those of you familiar with the nature of crowd-funding, it is generally a stressful, uncertain, and potentially humiliating experience, and yet for indie artists, it has become very much the de facto approach to get your work in front of people. Joe spent a few fun minutes with Staci chatting about her vision for the new album, the experiences that inspired the songs, and how our kind listeners can help bring it to life. Singer/songwriter and self-taught musician Staci Frenes has immersed herself in writing to uncover and make sense of the mysteries and chaos of life. From the tender age of 12, music has been the unmistakable key to her salvation and self-discovery. Not a matter of happenstance or something she just fell into, but one deliberate decision after another to cultivate songs and stories into something strong and beautiful and brave. It's rarely been easy. Being an independent artist is an all-guts, no-glory proposition. With every new effort comes the challenge of connecting and marketing and improving your craft. But eight records in, this UC-Berkeley graduate and former English teacher has enjoyed successes she hadn't dared to dream. Learn more about Staci, click here.
