Send us Fan MailIn this first episode of our Loud Longings series, we explore a different way of looking at longing. Instead of treating it as a problem to fix, we ask what if that ache is actually pointing us toward something deeper. We share a simple breath prayer—“Lord Jesus” on the inhale, “meet me in my longing” on the exhale—and reflect on Psalm 42, where the psalmist openly acknowledges a deep thirst for God. Together, we consider how spiritual longing is not something to fear, but a part of how we were created. We also talk about the connection between longing, emotional eating, compulsive behaviors, and other ways we try to numb discomfort. Rather than asking, “What's wrong with me?” we invite a more honest question: “What am I truly longing for right now?” Looking at Jesus' encounter with the Samaritan woman in John 4, we see how He meets thirsty people with compassion and offers Himself as the source of lasting satisfaction. We discuss common substitutes such as food, scrolling, busyness, achievement, control, and even ministry activity, and offer a simple practice for when cravings get loud: pause, notice, and pray, “Jesus, meet me here.”If you want a Christian podcast approach to cravings, shame resilience, and deeper intimacy with God, press play. “At the bottom of our being is a throbbing, an aching that pines for our Other, day and night... a soul-longing that can't be fulfilled by anything this world has to offer.” Those words from Strahan Coleman's Thirsting open the door to a conversation about the ache beneath all our searching. What begins with people paying premium prices for meaningful emotional experiences soon turns toward the deeper hunger those experiences may touch but can never satisfy. Kyle and Wayne explore how easily our spiritual yearning can be hijacked by illusion, fear, performance, or the pursuit of a “God moment” we can control. But the deeper invitation is not to chase an experience; it is to awaken to the One who is already near, whose desire for us is greater than our desire for him, and whose kingdom is already within us. Perhaps the fulfillment of our deepest ache is found not in extraordinary moments, but in learning to recognize and nurture his presence in the ordinary ones. John tells us that “on the last and greatest day of the Feast, Jesus stood and said something which would certainly have drawn a lot of attention. He described a source of water that was, and is, limitless! He announced, “Whoever believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him.” On this day our Savior announced rivers of water – not the kind that bring destruction and flooding, but the beneficial rain of His mercy that brings life.

My Pentecost sermon was “inspired" in part by two sentences in N.T. Wright's Surprised by Hope: “In the new creation, the ancient human mandate to look after the garden is dramatically reaffirmed, as John hints in his resurrection story, where Mary supposed Jesus is the gardener. The resurrection of Jesus is the affirmation of the goodness of creation, and the gift of the Spirit is there to make us the fully human beings we were supposed to be, precisely so that we can fulfill that mandate at last.” (pp 220-221) It also was inspired by spending so much time in John's Gospel this year, and in Strahan Coleman's two books: Thirsting and Beholding. In Beholding, Coleman shares the image of the “hongi,” a custom of the Mãori people of New Zealand, where he lives, that speaks of the profound moment in Genesis 2:7, and in John 20:21-22, when God breathes life and Spirit into the first human, and and then Jesus does the same into the fearful, hiding disciples. “The hongi is the gentle pressing of noses together in which one another's breath - our “ha” or life force - is intermingled. Usually, during a hong, you'll shake hands with one arm and embrace the shoulder of the other person in a loose hug. It's full body experience in which for a good moment of time, two people occupy one space… Mãori traditionally used to recount their ancestry together during the hongi until they found a common ancestor to unite them.” (p 77). He has more to say about both this image speaking to intimacy with God, beholding God face to face, as an important understanding of prayer, as well as people in our lives; obviously this is uncomfortable, confronting, and overwhelming this for us who are more accustomed to highly individualized, personal space-keeping, and generally more transactional-based ways of relating. Beautifully, if a non-Mãori person visits, and is invited and consents to the hongi, that person is considered Mãori for as long as they are among the Mãori village or gathering. For Adam, for Jesus' disciples, and for you and me, God chose and chooses to come so very close: to be with us, and within us, and between us, saturating us and holding us together. May we know this and grow in this, more and more, consenting like Mary, and surrendering like Jesus himself, to the Presence and action of God - and to join God in the work of tending and healing God's world.
The Portage church of Christ is a group of pre-denominational Christians that are striving to serve the Lord together. Our goal is to please God, and we believe that the best way to do that is to follow the pattern that was established by the churches in the first century and revealed in the New Testament. We have no creed or doctrine except the Bible and we follow the Bible only. We strive for unity in the teaching of New Testament doctrine. Our congregation is not part of, or subject to, any larger man-made religious organization. We are a completely autonomous congregation. We are locally governed, just as the church in the first century was. How does one becomes a member of this church congregation? The exact same way as seen in the Biblical accounts. On the day of Pentecost following Jesus' resurrection, people who repented and were baptized were saved (Acts 2:38) and the saved were added to the church (Acts 2:47). These saved people were members of the body, or church (Colossians 1:18). To become a Christian, the Bible teaches: Hear the gospel (Rom. 10:17) Believe that Jesus Christ is the son of God (John 8:24, 58, Heb. 11:6) Repent of past sins (Luke 13:3, 5) Confess Jesus as Lord (Matt. 10:32-33, Rom. 10:9-10) Be baptized for the remission of sins (Acts 2:38, Mark 16:16) Remain Faithful to Christ (Rev. 2:10, 2 Tim 4:7-8)

CURRENT SERIES - The Torch and the Pail What if we removed every transaction from our faith, every promise of reward, every threat of consequence? An ancient Sufi story tells of an angel carrying a torch to burn down the mansions of heaven and a pail to put out the fires of hell so that we might finally see who truly loves God. Not out of fear. Not to earn mercy. Just love, for love's sake. This series is an invitation to come home to a faith with no strings attached, where perfect love casts out fear, and God desires mercy, not sacrifice. What does it look like to simply love God for the sake of love itself? Come and let's explore this journey of faith together.
Are we more less interested in God than in what we want Him to do for us?

Episode 01 | Matt 5:1-12 | Dave Miles | 26/04/2026Dave begins a new series on the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5–7), beginning with the Beatitudes and focusing on Matthew 5:6: “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness.” Dave presents righteousness as a new way of living—obedience from the heart that seeks God's kingdom and will “to the max.” This talk explores why believers would crave God's will, arguing from Ephesians 1 that God's will and pleasure are one and the same, reflecting the Old Testament concept of God's “ratzon” (favour/pleasure/will), illustrated in Psalms, Proverbs, and Isaiah 61 as the Messiah's announcement of the “year of the Lord's favour.” Dave challenges fear-based views of God, frames obedience as entering God's delight, and addresses spiritual apathy by showing how Jesus awakens desire, using John 4 to reveal misplaced pursuits that don't satisfy and invite people to living water and true fulfilment.

Bishop Robert Barron’s Sermons - Catholic Preaching and Homilies
Friends, on this Third Sunday of Lent, we hear the story from John's Gospel of the woman at the well—a kind of master class in evangelization. What is evangelization all about? It's about telling starving people where to find bread; it's about telling people dying of thirst where to find water. Every one of us sinners seeks life in this way; thus, this story, so rich in its dynamics, is a story about all of us.

Joy comes not from indulgence but from craving what is right. The world says joy comes from satisfying every desire; Jesus says joy comes from desiring God and His ways. Longing for God's way leads to satisfaction.
