In fact, it was Paul who first ran the race and got the commemorative t-shirt without telling his wife! Fast forward to laundry day...and guess what shows up?!? Yep...the Bare Buns 5K t-shirt! Ooops! Of course, that sparked quite a conversation, but it led to Barbara joining Paul for the next race. Now after completing several nude runs together, they are regular weekenders here at the Ranch, and they hope to retire and become full-time residents in the not-to-distant future! The World Naked Bike Ride is a very popular naturist event. This series of rides happens annually in cities all across the country. Mike and Linda from Star Ranch loaded up their E-bikes and traveled from Texas to St. Louis to participate in that city's ride. They tell us what it was like to pedal clothes-free through a city that rolls out the welcome mat for nudists. Like many, Jonathan discovered Star Ranch during one of our twice-yearly 5K clothing-optional runs! Initially, his wife Gini was hesitant to join him at the ranch, but eventually agreed to give it a try. On her first visit, she remained dressed as she lounged by the pool, but it wasn't long before she was comfortable enough to shed her clothes and join in on the fun! Everyone discovers Star Ranch in their own unique way. For Rhum, that discovery came while he was working the Renaissance Festival circuit at Sherwood Forest Faire just down the road and needed a place to stay for a few weeks. He ended up loving the Ranch so much, that he is now a full-time resident and just recently joined the Star Ranch Council, helping to interview potential new members and planning activities for members and visitors alike!  

Today's StarCast has a bit of an international flair! Long ago, an employment opportunity took Don & Mary Anne to Germany. There, they were able to experience something called FKK (Freikörperkultur)...which roughly translates into 'Free Body Culture'. Thanks to careful planning, they were able to retire early and return to the U.S. Good friends pointed them in the direction of San Antonio and the Texas Hill Country, and before long, they discovered Star Ranch just east of Austin, a club that embraces the same family-friendly nude recreation they enjoyed in Germany. In today's episode, learn about FKK and how that experience changed their lives!

Glen and Tracy first met as teenagers. Today, more than 50 years later, they're retired and spend quality time at home with their chickens and horses. But, now with a little extra time on their hands, they've decided to branch out and try something new! Glen has always wanted to explore nude recreation, and Tracy finally agreed to give it a try. Honestly, she wasn't hooked after her first visit to Star Ranch, but after participating in the Bare Buns 5K race one spring, she suddenly felt more comfortable in her own skin. As you might imagine, she was initially very upset. But, after several conversations, she decided to visit and see for herself what Star Ranch was all about. Today, they are proud Star Ranch members and even have a cabin at the ranch for weekend getaways! They credit their time at the ranch for strengthing their marriage and improving their communication as a couple. Meet Barbara & Paul!

Meet Kate! Kate and her husband have been weekenders here at Star Ranch for many years. Someday, they hope to make the ranch their full-time home. In the meantime, you can find Kate cooking up a delicious breakfast most weekends for members and visitors alike. Plus, she helped plant a beautiful flower garden at the front entrance to the ranch, and has spruced up our indoor pool and hot tub area so we're ready when the cooler weather arrives! And, she's always up for a game of water volleyball! We lucky to have her as a member of Star Ranch!

Sabrina is an avid runner and participates in our spring and fall 5K fun runs! They also tell us about a private social media group that helps Star Ranch members and guests keep up to date on all of the fun activities that are always going on here at the ranch!

In today's episode of StarCast, you'll meet Mark. He's not only a Star Ranch member, he's a full-time resident of the ranch and is a past General Manager. Mark talks about his life as a nudist and about his occupation in the film industry. In fact, Mark curates the annual Naturist Film Festival here at the ranch, as well as aboard the Big Nude Boat sailing each February with Bare Necessities, an Austin-based naturist cruise travel company.  

Mike and his wife have been members of Star Ranch for over 20 years. About 2 years ago they decided to make the ranch their permanent home. Mike has served as President of the Board of Directors and currently is a member of the Star Ranch Council, which is in charge of planning all sorts of fun events for both members and visitors. Hear Mike talk about what it's like to actually live full-time at a nudist resort!

Today, special guest  host, Mike W., interviews the heart and soul of Star Ranch, the lovely Wanda*. Along with her husband, David, Wanda has been a member of Star Ranch for more than 25 years. During that time, Wanda has done just about everything from working in the kitchen to serving as President of the Board of Directors. She's seen many changes  at the ranch over the years, and in this special episode, she reflects on where we've been and what's next as our community continues to grow.*Unfortunately, Wanda passed away just days after she recorded this podcast. A lovely memorial celebration was held here at the ranch in early February, attended by her family and friends. She will always be treasured for her many contributions to our community.

The Board of Directors at Star Ranch is a group of volunteers elected by the membership. They are responsible for the business operations of the club and insure that the bills are paid and that things run smoothly for our members. Crystal has been a nudist for more than 40 years and a member of Star Ranch for more than 25 years. Hear her thoughts on the history of the club, how we've dealt with the recent rapid growth in membership, and where we are headed in the future.

Today, we're talking with Lucy, the President of the Southwest Chapter of AANR, the American Association of Nude Recreation. Lucy tells us why you can feel safe and secure when you visit a club like Star Ranch that is affiliated with AANR. She tells us why it's important for AANR to work with local, state and national elected officials, and why it's critical that we encourage families with children to try an AANR club like Star Ranch.

Michael and Vicky, new 'empty-nesters', both struggled with body acceptance issues before first visiting Star Ranch just a couple of years ago. Vicky has alopecia, a hair-loss disease that even her husband wasn't fully aware of. And Michael's fear of nudity kept him from seeing a doctor...a decision that could have cost him his life. But once they decided to shed their clothes, they shed those fears. Hear their amazing and humorous story about how they decided to try naturism and how they broke the news to their kids!

Charles and Betty first came to Star Ranch to participate in our very popular "Bare Buns 5K" run/walk held every April. They instantly fell in love with the family-friendly atmosphere at the ranch and all of the wonderful people here. Now, they're new members and are signed up for the annual "Chilly Cheeks 5K" to be held on Saturday, October 8th. Do you like great BBQ? I do. I set out over a year ago now to create a show about barbecue. About tasting it, about the people who cook it and all the amazing places that serve delicious, wood fired, low and slow Texas BBQ. Texas Barbecue is unique from many other states. It’s actually descended from the German’s who moved here almost a century ago. They had a simple recipe to cook cheaper cuts and all it took was time and some salt and pepper. Originally Barbecue wasn’t even the main event at most of these meat markets. It was a way to preserve meat that the butcher hadn’t sold yet, the way your local grocer cooks rotisserie chickens to get a few extra days out of their meat case And now, The funny thing is Texans are going to Germany to teach them how to cook BBQ. In fact, Texans are flying all over the world to spread the gospel of Texas BBQ. There’s smoke houses in Tokyo, Toronto, Copenhagen, Adelaide and even London advertising Texas BBQ. I can’t tell you much about those restaurants, but they’re on my list for future episodes. As I’ve said before, @bestbarbecue in all your favorite posts, it’s how I’ve discovered half the Texas BBQ joints all over the world. I didn’t realize when I began the show that I would be posed with a problem. A problem that is almost insurmountable for one person. A challenge that only a true meatman can handle. Not the problem of places to cover, if know anything about BBQ you know there’s a new BBQ joint springing up every week. Now that the word is out, people are working their butts off to create barbecue that rivals the greats. The problem isn’t quality either. In the last decade the amount of GOOD Barbecue, just in Texas, has probably quadrupled. Between youtube, amazingribs.com, and all the books coming out, the techniques of Texas BBQ are not a secret. In fact, the next undiscovered pit master could be listening to this show right now. Secretly cooking the best briskets none of us have ever tasted, just waiting for their moment to drop their perfect bark and masterfully rendered fat right in our laps. Whoever is out there researching for the Texas Monthly top 50 has their hands full in the next few years. Maybe they’ll round it up to a top 100. I thought the problem would be access. I stressed about all these pit masters working hard might not be friendly. They may not want to share their story or worry about competition. If you listen to this show, you know we have all been happily surprised at the openness of my guests. The people who cook barbecue love talking about it. They welcome us to their pit rooms, their small offices, or their huge patios and we often talk for hours before and after the episode is recorded. The problem is choosing what to cover! Who should I talk to this week? Do I talk to an amazing pitmaster or the famous owner of the same restaurant? Do I talk to an up and comer or do a take a left turn and hang out with a competition team at one of the loca rodeos? Do me a favor, send me the people you’d like to hear from. So don’t be shy To give you a look behind the scenes, I talk to tons of BBQ people every week. I talk about what’s next and who’s cooking new and different things. The borders between Texas and the rest of the US are melting away. Honestly, the borders between Texas and the world are melting away. I’ve got a big fan cooking in the Philippines. His name is David Peralta and he cooks at a place called rubbed and smoked. They fly USDA choice black angus briskets from Star Ranch across the Pacific and put them into Barrel Pro’s which are, as you probably guessed, Texas style offset smokers. I’ll post a few pictures of them this week so you can see what they’re working with. ::: They cook their briskets with DRAGON FRUIT AND TAMARIND INDICA wood. I wonder if that tastes different from post oak… They even have their own line of BBQ sauces. If no one has told you yet, bbq is taking over the world… Every week is a challenge. I look for the best news and the most interesting people. Having said that, I’ve got a few new ideas that you’ll start hearing about in the coming months. Steak cook offs are taking off and I might even start competing in them. I was first turned on to them at the NBBQA convention this year. It’s a simple contest, you get two steaks and you have to turn one in. It has to be perfectly medium and you usually need a few other things like nice grill marks. I’m excited about the simplicity of it. In competition bbq you have tons of injections and sauces and additives that, I feel, have taken away from the true flavors of the meat. Also, the cost of competition and the equipment has priced out many home cooks and others that may want to dabble. The cool thing about steak competitions is you don’t need much to enter. Some people just cook on small grills. M Grills makes a ammo can looking grill called the C4 which is just big enough for a couple steaks. Go ahead and google it, it’s a pretty cool little travel grill. I think the average person wants to be able to cook a perfect steak. What better practice than buying a week's worth of ribeyes and cooking them up every night until you’ve got your method down solid? I know I’m happy eating steak every night. Wouldn’t you like to know, down to the second, how long a perfect steak takes? If you’re keeping up with us you’ll hear all about it. Nancy’s interest in horses began at 16 months of age when she received a rocking horse on the first Christmas she can remember. Her interest in the challenges disabled people faced every day started with her Great Uncle Walter who she first met when she was 3 years of age. Uncle Walter was blind. He had lost his sight when he was taking money earned from his business to the bank for deposit. He was robbed by a thug who hit him with a blackjack (as it was called in those days), knocked him unconscious and robbed him of his hard earned money. Uncle Walter was kind, sweet, and never complained about his misfortune. At the time he was a young man, engaged to be married. He broke the engagement because he did not want to burden the girl he loved. Nancy was fascinated by what he could do without sight. Play the piano, he had even taught piano. He took care of his invalid sister, and did all the cooking. Later as a teen-ager, Nancy baby sat a disabled child. In the early 1980’s Nancy went through a life altering experience. Not to be the first. But, this is when her horse “Dusty” entered her life. The Golden Palomino that she had always dreamed of having as a child. Dusty was her therapy. Dusty started the chain of events that led Nancy to her life’s mission. In 1985 Nancy was certified by Happy Horsemanship For The Handicapped, Inc. as a Certified Administrator, Instructor, and Clinician. In 1986, she opened Heads Up Therapy With Horses for disabled children and adults. While being Founder and Executive Director of Heads Up she served as Set Advisor for NARHA (North American Riding for the Handicap Association; now know as PATH) in the production of a video with President and Mrs. Regan for Therapy On Horseback. She also served as the Volunteer Training Director for the newly forming California Network of Equestrian Therapy (CALNET). She is a Certified Direct Support Professional for California, and most recently finished her Army one Source Training, PTSD Then and Now. On the more creative side Nancy has served as a Western Music DJ Host, KHTS Radio, Santa Clarita, California. The show “Around The Barn” featured guests for discussion on topics related to horses, therapy, and achievements of the disabled population, and interviews with celebrity Western Music Artists from all over the country. “Around The Barn” was nominated for Best Radio Show of Years 2011, 2012, 2013 by the Western Music Association (WMA). On a final note, she has become a story/coloring book author for a true story series called “Dusty And Friends”, an educational coloring book.
