As part of his effort to rebuild the discipline with a more complete understanding of the relationship between humans and their environment, Keen has begun developing alternative economic models that could be used to fairly redistribute wealth from the richest 1% to the rest of us, and to accurately evaluate the worth of clean air, clean water, and a healthy biosphere. Out-going Scone Race Club CEO, Steve Keene chats about his impending move to the Illawarra Turf Club.
We established essentially a collaborative parenting style. We collaborate not only together, but with the children. –Katie Keene Wouldn't you love a peaceful home and respectful children? It can feel nearly impossible for parents, that's why I'm talking with Katie and Steve Keene about home economy and collaborative parenting. Collaborative parenting involves collaborating with each other, and their kids. Mom and dad are still in charge, but the kids wants and interests and opinions are heard. They set up a family government with clearly defined rules, expectations, and consequences (these apply to parents too). This allows kids to know what to expect. They established a home economy that took pressure off of everyone to do all the things that need doing in a home. It also helped the kids become more independent and self-confident. Plus their kids are learning financial responsibility. We talk about: What a home economy actually looks like Family meetings and developing a team mentality Starting with a long-term vision about what you want for your family Coming to agreement about what you want kids to learn before they leave your house Accepting and learning from failure How to use the home economy model with kids who are schooled outside the house BIO Steve and Katie are family success consultants, as well as the creators of the Family Success Secrets podcast. Steve also offers executive coaching for business owners looking to optimize their team efficiency and employee satisfaction and retention rates. They have been married for 20 years, have 5 incredible children, have lived through numerous moves and military deployments while raising their family – all while discovering the special needs that two of the children were born with. They have endured hardship and have built joyful resilience through the process. They love to travel, meet new people, eat good food, and are completely hooked on helping families transform their lives from chaos and tension into lives lived with purpose and passion. LINKS Find Katie and Steve here: https://linktr.ee/familysuccess (https://linktr.ee/familysuccess) Course: https://familysuccesssecrets.com/course (https://familysuccesssecrets.com/course) Doable Changes from this episode: MAKE A DECISION TOGETHER. Steve and Katie talk about growing up with different kinds of lights on their Christmas trees. They had to decide what they would do for their family: go with one option or the other, alternate years, combine? Find something where you and your partner have different ideas from upbringing or personal preference. Make a decision together for your family. VISION TOGETHER. If you are parenting with somebody else, you probably have different visions about what you want for your family and how to get there. Start with a long-term vision. What's important to you? What are your preferences? What are your absolutes? How do you want to feel when kids come home to visit in 20 years? Get your long-term vision aligned before you try to make a plan or rules for now. LOWER EXPECTATIONS. Notice one thing you are expecting of yourself. It might be carefully posed pictures for the first day of school or having a pristine house or dinner looking perfect. How can you lower that expectation and give yourself a little grace? It might help to think about why it is important to you. Are you trying to meet others' expectations or is there something valuable to you in the expectation? How can you keep the value but give more ease?

Today on WASTOIDS With we're joined by painter Steve Keene and producer and photographer Dan Efram, who's responsible for the newly released publication, The Steve Keene Art Book from Hat & Beard Press. Known for his album covers for artists like the Silver Jews, Apples in stereo, and Pavement as well as his distinct, impressionistic and playful style, Keene estimates he's produced something like 300,000 works of art. Dedicated to a punk ethos of creating art quickly and selling it cheaply, it's ultimately not hard to get your hands on a Keene—but that's the whole point. Keene and Ephram join us to discuss keeping it DIY, not falling prey to doubts, and making art as a way of life. Our studio is covered in Steve Keene paintings. Wanna get a look? On today's episode, I talk to artist Steve Keene. Originally from the DC metro area, Steve wanted to be an artist from an early age, taking off on a path that eventually led him to Yale art school. But it wasn't until his early 30s that he realized what he actually wanted to do as an artist, and since then Steve has become the most prolific American painter of all time, producing more than 300,000 hand-painted works via his studio/chainlink fence cage where he paints more than 50 paintings at a time.Time Magazine even gave him the moniker of the "Assembly-Line Picasso" because of his unique mass-production painting style. In addition to his affordable mass produced paintings, Steve's also painted the album art for many indie rock bands, including Pavement, The Apples in Stereo, The Silver Jews, as well as many others, and a new book about Steve, produced by photojournalist Daniel Efram, was recently published on Hat and Beard Press! Steve Keene - "Interview" https://www.wfmu.org/playlists/shows/116593
The InterviewIt's not hyperbole to say that Steve Keene has produced more original artwork than most (if not all) American artists, having painted more than 300,000 works in the last 30 years.Raised and educated in Charlottesville, Virginia, he first came to my attention in the mid-1990s, when I was working for the indie record label Drag City. Keene had done the cover art for the Silver Jews' Arizona Record as well as Pavement's Wowee Zowee on Matador. He had gone to college with David Berman (Silver Jews) and Stephen Malkmus (Pavement) in the 1980s, and they remained friends and collaborators afterward.Although he is known to many for his indie rock album covers, he has a much bigger audience today outside of the music scene of downtown NY from another era. Not only is he now collected in museums but he is still lovingly known for making affordable art: most of Keene's work retails for under $70; in the 1990s heyday, it was only $5 or $10 a piece. Steve continues to crank out 50 paintings at a time, day-in and day-out, from his converted auto body shop home/studio in Brooklyn, where he has lived and worked with his architect wife and family for decades. The Steve Keene Art Book—originally conceived during his sold out show at Shepard Fairey's LA Gallery Subliminal Projects in 2016—is the first art book dedicated exclusively to his work as a fine artist. For this episode, I spoke with the book's editor Daniel Efram, a photographer, producer, and long-time manager of the Apples in Stereo—for whom Keene also created the cover art on Fun Trick Noise Maker 25 years ago—about Steve Keene and his lifelong artistic journey.I've been a long-time fan and collector of Keene's work. Twenty years ago, I spent a day with him, profiling him in the pages of Stop Smiling, “The Magazine for High-Minded Lowlifes,” which I published from 1995 to 2009 from Chicago and New York. Hence, this was a nice circle of life moment. The Steve Keene Art Book is published through Hat & Beard Press and Tractor Beam, Efram's New York City-based press. The ReadingEditor Daniel Efram reads from his essay in The Steve Keene Art Book.Music by The Apples in Stereo

In the '90s you could not avoid Steve Keene paintings. Everyone seemed to have a Keene. In New York, they decorated tiny apartment walls, clubs, record stores and dive bars including Brownies, CBGB's Gallery, the Knitting Factory, Kim's Underground, and Other Music, The New York music scene of the 1990s embraced the do-it-yourself aesthetic and Keene was the unofficial king of that. His democratic approach to making and selling artwork allowed young people to buy original artwork for the first time.Photographer Daniel Efram has put together the definitive book on Keene and his work, and talks to us about Keene's paintings of famous covers, and covers of albums he likes, as well as covers that have no particular meaning to him other than being an artistic challenge. “I'm making kind of a history of albums,” Keene says. “They're monuments to something that doesn't exist anymore.” Tune in.

Steve Keene is the most prolific artist you've probably never heard of. By some estimates he's given away or sold north of 300,000 of his paintings on plywood, which he produces multiple copies of at a time. If you are a fan of the bands Pavement or the Silver Jews or Dave Matthews Band, you may have studied his album art. His paintings are all over the borough: In bars, coffee shops, homes, sometimes left on sidewalks. Now, at 65, he has a book coming out in June, the first to focus solely on his work. And today he joins us from his home in Greenpoint to discuss that work, the book, his reputation and his agenda … or lack thereof. As the conversation winds down, I go grab my painting off the wall for the artist to describe. It’s a rare opportunity. It’s also the second time in a month that I’ve done this on Zoom call, following a recent one with friends where we all realized we had Keenes on our wall. In certain circles, Steve Keene’s work has become a fixture. A generation discovered the artist through his cover paintings for bands like Pavement, The Apples in Stereo and the Silver Jews — realizing that he work could be purchased in bulk through his website. In a medium where seemingly everything has been attempted over the course of thousands of years, Keene pioneered a unique niche, with a form of mass production that has generated more than 300,000 works over the course of his career. The Steve Keene Art Book: Live from Subliminal Projects LA, CA is an effort to catalog a fascinating career. The art book — which is the first of Keene’s long career — is currently seeking funding on Kickstarter.
Ep30: It's a fun chat with Dan Efram. Dan's managed the band The Apples in Stereo for the past 15 years. His current projects include curating multimedia artist Steve Keene's “Modular Synthesis” show at Shepard Fairey's Subliminal Projects as well as producing documentaries on Steve Keene and "A Place We Have Been To: A film featuring The Elephant 6 Recording Collective" which includes primary entities The Apples in stereo, Olivia Tremor Control and Neutral Milk Hotel. On today's show we talk to artist Steve Keene. Based in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, Steve has been called the "Assembly-Line Picasso" by Time Magazine because of his unique mass-production painting style. Steve likens this method to the way musicians work, and he's painted the album art for many indie rock bands, including Pavement, The Apples in Stereo, The Silver Jews and many others.A few weeks ago, we met up with Steve at his studio space, and got in deep about painting as performance, the satisfaction of doing actual labor, and taking your inspiration from musicians. We also got to see his workspace up close and get a real feel for how he makes art. It was a treat!Subscribe on iTunes and follow Andy and Mark on Twitter!
