I'm moving to LA this week, so I wanted to take a break from producing an episode to settle into the new digs and recover from having to take two cats on a cross-country flight. And while I was getting ready for the move, I was cleaning up my hard drive and found some of the music from when Beginnings was a monthly live show at UCB East (every month we'd have a musical guest perform and then be interviewed). These performances are really fantastic, and I don't know how many people have heard them, so this week, I thought I'd put out a mixtape of Beginnings live show performances (and a couple of in-studio ones too). That show was frakking stacked! We chatted about 7th grade acid trips, a horrifying Wolverine/clown hybrid, Buddy Rich's drumstick, shitty underwear, divorce, a bloodsoaked sock and enjoyed a lot of uncomfortable sadness as well as a final moment of joy. in January of 2010, two novice comedians - Andy and Mark - started Beginnings as a way to cut through the layers of mythos that surrounded having a career in entertainment. How does one *actually* have a career in comedy? What are the realities about getting into show business? Three years and 106 episodes later, Beginnings has shed its original intent and morphed into a Freudian talk show that examines where creative people come from and what their childhoods were like.On today's episode, Mark and Andy look back over the first 100 episodes and pick out some of their favorite moments with guests such as Daily Show-writer Elliott Kalan, Pete Holmes, Matt Besser, Ian Roberts, Tom Scharpling, Gabrielle Bell, Ethan Berlin (Totally Biased, Bunk), John Lee (Wonder Showzen), Devin Clark (Ugly Americans), Jesse Moynihan (Adventure Time), David Rees, and Jon Glaser. On today's show, we talk to cartoonist Bill Griffith. Bill began his comics career in the late 1960s in New York before eventually heading out west to San Francisco to be part of the burgeoning underground comics scene in the 1970s, where he co-founded the comics anthology Arcade with Art Spiegelman. Around this time, Griffith also created his brilliant daily strip Zippy the Pinhead, which runs today in over 100 newspapers and has been compiled in numerous collections.Earlier this month while in town for the MoCCA indie comics festival, Bill stopped by Andy's apartment in Harlem to discuss America as a nation of losers, the guilt and paranoia of influence, the Beat poets and Greenwich Village in the '50s and '60s, growing up in Levittown, having parents that lived through the depression and WWII, and the failed Zippy film. Also, check out our 100th episode live in May at UCB East on the 7th with Sam Seder (Majority Report, Bob's Burgers), J.J.
