Shridar Subramanian, Chief Marketing Officer and Head of Product Management at Arcserve discusses the acquisition between StorageCraft and Arcserve, his view on the next wave of adoption in the Data Protection industry, and why it's important for CIO's to lock down a solid disaster recovery plan for their hybrid workloads.
On the podcast this week, our guests Brian Schwarz and Sean Derrington discuss the ins and outs of the new storage launches with your hosts Stephanie Wong and Jenny Brown. Brian gives light introductions to the five facets of Google’s data storage portfolio, like the primary storage solutions for files, storage of backups of data, and data transfer software and hardware. Lately, the Google team has been enhancing existing data solutions and building new ones. Cloud Storage’s multi-region and custom dual-region options easily let customers keep data safe and accessible. Our guests explain what happens behind the scenes to make these features so effective. Brian and Sean describe the user experience, including how clients can see when data is being replicated and where. New capabilities like Turbo Replication allow more modernization for clients moving to the cloud as well. Sean talks about the new Filestore Enterprise, which allows companies to move critical apps to the cloud quickly and securely, and we learn why accurate, fast file and data replication is so important for these large customers. If there is corruption or accidental deletion of a file, Brian and Sean tell us about the fail-safes that are in place and the process for recovery. Filestore Enterprise, Filestore Basic, and GKE working together offer a more customized approach for large clients, allowing them to allocate their critical projects to Enterprise and other less important applications to Basic. Stateful applications in containers are becoming more popular as well, and our guests tell us how Backup for GKE is the easiest way to protect GKE workloads. Brian Schwarz Brian has had 20 years in product management in data center infrastructure. Before Google, he spent time at Veritas, Cisco, and most recently Pure Storage. Sean Derrington Sean has spent 20 years in storage product management. Before Google, he spent time at Veritas, Exablox, and StorageCraft. It’s a whole new world, folks, and it just might be a great one too if you’re willing to rethink everything. This week’s guest host, Vertical Axion President Herman Pool, has some thoughts to share on that, plus the other topics Matt and Rich cover on this show: StorageCraft’s new affordably-priced BDR appliance, the new AI-powered proactive management tool from Unitrends, the importance for MSPs of delegating responsibility to techs rather than abdicating it, and the suddenly compelling use cases for Jabra’s Pana-Cast huddle room web cam. Then settle in for a thought-provoking conversation with Philip Vorobeychik, of Vertica Capital Partners, a private equity firm that invests in growth-stage software companies. That’s right, listeners, we finally get a chance to discuss private equity with someone who works in the field, and believe the result adds clarity to a timely subject. There’s also some talk about how hard connecting PCs to TVs used to be without special tech. If that sounds strange to you, you’re much younger than your hosts. You know what’s big? Elephants. You know what’s small? This week’s episode. It’s a little shorter than usual, anyway, even though Matt and Rich have plenty to say about StorageCraft’s new continuity solution for small businesses, Dell’s partner-like program for non-partner MSPs, Tech Data’s new identity as a solutions aggregator, who owns who in managed services after all the recent vendor M&A activity, and what channel pros are doing differently in the wake of Intel’s recent processor shortage. Matt also shares fond memories of a recently deceased GPS device and discusses a hot new desktop chip from AMD. Just like Gertude the elephant, you’ll never forget the whole thing! I just got back from the big ChannelPro SMB Forum in Philadelphia. For more information on next year’s events, visit http://events.channelpronetwork.com/. At the event, I talked to a number of vendors. Here is present some quick shout-outs from Datto, Buffalo Tech, Excel Micro, Lenovo, and StorageCraft. Most importantly, I had a chance to hang out with Dave Seibert and sit on a cloud panel with him. Dave is the mastermind behind the big SMB TechFest that happens about four times a year in Anaheim, CA. Here I talk to Dave about the next event – November 21-22, 2014. For more info, visit www.smbtechfest.com.
At the SMB Nation Spring Conference, I talked to Laura Shafer, Director or Product Marketing at StorageCraft. StorageCraft and their ShadowProtect product are very well known. Now StorageCraft has a new cloud-based disaster recovery program called StorageCraft Cloud Services. This product was in beta during “Super Storm Sandy” and performed admirably. Now it is in general release. For more information, visit www.StorageCraft.com – There’s a Partner link on the right side of the page. Contact Laura at laura.shafer@storagecraft.com or ping the partner program at sales@storagecraft.com. – Download the Interview with Laura Shafer of StorageCraft here.
One of the fun things at this year’s SMB Nation event was the whole “Back to the Future” theme. In addition to the lovely Claudia Wells (see previous podcast), StorageCraft and Intel paid to bring the Time Machine to the conference hall. Since he was there all weekend, I grabbed the opportunity to talk to the current owner, Mark Shields. Download the interview with Mark Shields now. You can find Mark online at: www.TimeMachineRental.com or on Twitter at http://www.twitter.com/deloreanrental His web site has a photo gallery as well as a video gallery. Mark is an application Architect for a large corporation in Minneapolis, so this is a part-time gig for him. Not a bad side job. As Mark mentions in his interview, a portion of his rental fee goes to the The Michael J. Fox Foundation to fight Parkinson’s Disease. https://www.michaeljfox.org/ Over on my Facebook page (www.facebook.com/karlpalachuk), I posted some close-up pictures of the car. Mark says there are about ten replicas in the US. One very interesting note in this interview: Mark is working on how to un-SEO your Internet footprint. Mark has done some other projects in the past, including other replica cars. After he’s figured out how to convert existing SEO to his current projects, he’s hoping to write a book. I hope he stays in touch.
