Ch. 1 - The Dharma of an Aerospace Engineer from Journey of Insight Meditation by Eric Lerner About a dozen of us sat cross-legged in a darkened living room in a Massachusetts country home, attentive to the speech of a man whom all present including myself would agree was a highly unlikely candidate for a meditation teacher. His name was Robert Hover, and he was an aerospace engineer from Los Angeles. He had the incongruity of a centaur. The bottom part of him looked right, seated comfortably on a cushion, wrapped in a Burmese style lungi, a cloth cylinder tied at the waist. Above that, though, was a 1950's style short-sleeved sport shirt and a prominent, clean-shaven face and balding head with a fringe of gray hair cut as close as possible. He didn't radiate beatitude, only practicality. He reminded me of my junior high school football coach. Our shoreline is very rocky, with large boulders deposited there as the glaciers retreated 10,000 years ago. Amazingly this shoreline provides sufficient sustenance for trees to grow and, in their own way, thrive. The summer after high school, Tony, his younger brother Chris, and I set out in an old Vauxhall held together with spit and bailing wire for points west on the Trans-Canada Highway. Le cuivre est présent sous la forme d'un filon dans la roche. Le minerai est broyé puis lavé pour en extraire le filon de cuivre. Comme le métal ne fond qu'à une température très élevée, le four est équipé de soufflets munis de tuyères, des tuyaux en argilequi permettent d'attiser les braises et atteindre une température d'environ 1100 degrés, nécessaire pour que le cuivre fonde. Le moule en terre cuite est enterré verticalement dans le sol. Le cuivre se liquéfie chauffé dans un creuset en pierre, une sorte de casserole ! Rapidement, le forgeron coule le cuivre dans le moule. Hors du feu le métal se solidifie très rapidement. On peut ensuite déterrer le moule et l'ouvrir. On plonge l'objet encore chaud dans l'eau pour le refroidir avant de le marteler pour l'aiguiser si on veut en faire des armes ou le polir pour en faire des bijoux.   L'arrivée du cuivre rend aussi certaines personnes beaucoup plus riches que les autres, et provoque des batailles entre les groupes de personnes. On voit aussi une différence de plus en plus grande entre les riches et les pauvres. A la suite de l'âge du cuivre est arrivé l'âge du bronze. Les hommes du néolithique ne se déplacent plus avec les troupeaux, ils sont devenus sédentaires. Ses parents cultivent la terre, ils font pousser des céréales  et des légumes. Dans le village il y a aussi des animaux qui sont à mi chemin entre le sanglier et le cochon, entre l'oroch et le bœuf, entre le mouflon et le mouton. Yaka a aussi un ami fidèle, Uru, un chien ! Ses ancetres étaient des loups mais ils ont été apprivoisés par les ancetres de Yaka.  La mère de Yaka est très douée pour fabriquer des poteries. Pour qu'elles puissent contenir du liquide et soient plus solides, elle les fait cuire dans un four, cela devient alors de la céramique. Dans leur village il y a aussi Neira une femme très douée pour tisser et coudre. Elle utilise le lin, le chanvre et bien sûr la laine pour fabriquer des vêtements. Yaka aime la regarder travailler avec son métier à tisser ou des aiguilles en os. Il y a également un vieil homme qui fabrique toutes sortes de paniers en osiers. Katie and Liz engage in this insightful conversation about the intersection of sobriety and the Hoffman Process. How can the Process support the journey of sobriety? And, how can the journey of sobriety deepen one's engagement in the Process itself and one's post-Process experience? After getting sober in 2014, Katie did the Process in the Spring of 2016. After completing the Process, Katie found a way to integrate her Hoffman work into her program of sobriety. Katie came to the Process to help heal her relationship with her mother whom Katie was caring for. Her mother was facing end-stage liver failure due to alcoholism. As an alcoholic herself, Katie was deeply compassionate toward others who were working a program of sobriety. But, it was different with her mother. She resented her drinking and other behaviors. Through the Process, Katie was able to heal her relationship with her mother as well as her resentment toward her mother's drinking by exploring what her mother's life was like prior to Katie being born. This helped Katie see her mother as a person whole unto herself and see her mother's pain separate from her own.  One of the big things Katie gained from the Process is a sense of neutrality – that people aren't doing things to her and she doesn't have to assume bad intent. Katie calls herself a liberal atheist, and as such, she found the ‘God concept' hard. However, in the Process, it wasn't hard at all for her to tap into her Spiritual Self. She realizes now that it was her Spiritual Self that brought her to that first Twelve Step meeting, that guided her to ask for a sponsor, and that ultimately brought her to the Process. On a very happy note, Katie's mother's health is much better. More about Katie: Katie is a Jane of all trades who embodies self-awareness and conscientiousness in everything she does. Her background in art led her to a career in the design tech space where she gets to combine her hunger for business and creativity in San Francisco. As an ex-gymnast, the Hoffman Process helped her separate her perfectionism from her innate love for movement. As a result, she now does acrobatics at a local circus gym. When she's not working or doing backflips, Katie is working on her latest woodworking project, training her deaf dog Ruby, cooking up her favorite vegetarian dishes, and enjoying the city's best coffee. We begin Season four with a powerful conversation with Liz Severin, Hoffman teacher and coach, and our newest podcast co-host. Welcome to the Show, Liz! Liz completed the Hoffman Process about five years ago. Living in a small town in Texas at the time, she'd never heard of the Process but found it through a Google search. Feeling a deep sense of loss of Self and hearing a question inside, “Who am I?” that she didn't know how to answer, she enrolled. Liz says she truly had no idea what she was getting into. Liz talks at length about how working with our Negative Love patterns helps us know ourselves better. She specifically mentions a pattern of being fiercely independent and feeling like she had to carry the weight of the world on her shoulders. After doing the Process, she now sees that fierce independence is a quality of her Spiritual Self. Liz honors her resilience and openness, chooses independence, and also knows when to ask for help. She explains this as the difference between being pattern-led and Spirit-led. The Process can heal so much within us if we are committed to doing the work. Liz shares a very tender experience that highlights how deep the healing can go. As a Hoffman teacher, Liz has dedicated her life to helping others in navigating the darkness within in service of finding themselves and their inner light. As Liz often says, “I don't know how we're going to get through this, but I know we're going to get through this.” More about Liz Severin: With a master's degree in Communication Disorders, Liz also works as a hospital-based speech-language pathologist where she helps neurological patients recover their cognitive and language skills, as well as their swallowing abilities after various traumas. As a Hoffman teacher, her same loving presence guides students to rediscover their own inner-knowing, cultivate self-love, and rediscover their purpose. Born in Norway, Liz lived all around the world before moving to the US for high school. Growing up overseas opened Liz's eyes to a diversity of languages and cultures. It also gave her a deep sense of curiosity about life and people. When she is not teaching the Process, seeing patients, or hosting guests on the podcast, Liz leads a busy life. She runs a small embroidery business, moonlights at a venture capital firm, coaches clients, explores outside, and loves chatting-up strangers. Liz enjoys the cold beaches and quiet foggy mornings of her home away from home, the San Francisco Bay Area. Chers Amis, L'invité de ce nouvel épisode est Ralph Dumonteil, artisan Maître luthier et Directeur Artistique de la Maison Pierre Jaffré. J'ai rencontré Ralph peu avant mon départ de Paris chez un ami équipementier de boxe anglaise. Ce qui m'a tout de suite séduit dans sa personnalité, c'est son attention apportée aux détails et à la beauté des objets se traduisant dans son travail des instruments du quatuor (en bois et à cordes quelquefois centenaires : violons, altos, violoncelles, contrebasses…). Il faut respecter le propriétaire de l'instrument, mais surtout respecter l'instrument : car moi ou le client pourrions disparaitre mais l'instrument lui restera. J'ai pris beaucoup de plaisir dans la réalisation de cette interview. Beloved Hoffman teacher and coach, Lisa Wenger, is our guest this week. Lisa has been a part of the Hoffman world since 1989 when she did the Process in Austria. What brought Lisa to the Process? Her brother had taken the Process and afterward, Lisa saw that he sparkle in his eyes. Lisa realized that she wanted that same sparkle back. After her Process, she knew her sparkle had returned because she could feel it in her Being. While in the middle of her Process, Lisa realized she wanted to start a Hoffman center in Italy. Once she completed that, Lisa realized she wanted to teach the Process. She feels very fortunate to have trained directly with Bob Hoffman. Listen in as she shares stories of the early days of the Hoffman Process in Europe. MORE ABOUT LISA WENGER: Born as the middle child between two brothers, Lisa grew up in an intellectually active family where the psychoanalyst C.G.Jung was like an “invisible” presence. Psychology was often a topic of conversation. She rebelled (silently…) and went off to live in Italy to work in fashion. Lisa took the Hoffman Process in 1989. Immediately during her Process, she felt driven to make it available in Italy. With the support of Bob Hoffman, she created the Italian Hoffman Institute and staged the first process in August 1990 where Bob was teaching. She then trained to become a Hoffman Teacher. She trained partly with Bob Hoffman, and also attended processes in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and France. Lisa spent ten years serving as the Director. She left the Italian Institute in the good hands of her brother and sister-in-law in order to dedicate herself to teaching and supervising more internationally – in the aforementioned countries as well as the UK, Ireland, Canada, the US. You can still find Lisa teaching virtually and coaching. Lisa lives with her husband Douglas in a small village above Lake Lugano in the Italian-speaking part of Switzerland. AS MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE: Méret wearing a paper coat she made. Photo: Claude LeAnh Lisa now handles the Estate of her artist aunt, Méret Oppenheim. Méret was a Swiss Surrealist artist and photographer. She has been recognized as a figure of the women's movement. In 1982, Méret Oppenheim won the Berlin Art Prize. In 2019, the city of Basel inaugurated a plaza, road, fountain, and a high-rise apartment building in the city center, all named after her. The large fountain features her sculpture Spirale (der Gang der Natur). Recently in 2018, Oppenheim was the subject of a short documentary, Gloria's Call. In Episode 91B, Matt from the "Boyz In The Wood" tells us about his 1994 northbound thru-hike on the Appalachian Trail in a limited N2Backpacking bonus edition. This is the fifth release in a special series to celebrate the 25th anniversary of our hike, and it was recorded at Trail Days on May 13, 1995 in Damascus, Virginia. Matt hiked with partner Derek as the "Boyz In Wood" in '94, and in this bonus episode we flashback to the mid-90's to speak with Matt about the trip. The interview was done in a car and with a small handheld mic and cassette tape recorder. So don't expect high fidelity in this recording – but I'm grateful to have this and a total of 11 recordings of my thru-hiking buddies from 1994.
