Demystifying Pure Lands: A Conversation with Mark Unno

Join the esteemed author and scholar Mark Unno in a wide-ranging discussion of the Pure Lands, and how much they have to offer for our modern age. Professor Unno begins with a thorough look at the history and philosophy of the Pure Land schools, before turning to the main principles of this noble tradition. The core tenets of self-power and other-power are explored, the role of nembutsu (reciting the name of Amida Buddha), true entrusting, deep listening, the power of mantra, and how the Pure Land of Sukhavati is different from Heaven, and Amida is different from God.Dr. Unno shares personal stories of his experience with Pure Land tenets, and how the practice of bowing and surrender has transformed him. How real are the Pure Lands? Do we take them literally or symbolically? Is there a danger in psychologizing the Pure Lands? Why should we go there after we die? Mark talks about the difference between nirvana and parinirvana, the nondual light of oneness that Amida represents, and the principle of purity and purification altogether. The discussion turns to the notion of “spiritual photosynthesis,” the power of light and the mantra of light, before moving to the idea of “reverse karmic bond” and its relationship to the Reverse Meditations. Professor Unno clearly manifests a lifetime of study and practice in the Pure Land tradition and represents the depth and profundity of a tradition that is sometimes dismissed as “Buddhism Lite.” Mark has a unique gift of taking these teachings and bringing them immediately into life, translating Pure Land principles into practical terms. See for yourself why Dr. Unno is such a treasured representative of this often-misunderstood tradition.

This aspiration prayer to be reborn in Sukhavati was translated and offered by Garchen Rinpoche's translation group. It's a powerful prayer to purify negative karma, increase merit (positive Karma), increase the likelihood that you will be born in a positive realm. It's also a prayer I've recited when loved one's died or are dying. Here is a link to my blog which has a link to download the prayer in PDF.

Lama Zopa Rinpoche begins this teaching, recorded on July 31, 2021, at Kopan Monastery in Nepal, by referencing this quote by Thogme Sango in Thirty-Seven Practices of a Bodhisattva: All sufferings come from desiring happiness for oneself. Full enlightenment comes from the thought of benefitting others. Therefore, exchanging one's own happiness for the suffering of others Is the practice of bodhisattvas. Rinpoche gives commentary on this passage and explains that all undesirable things, all the sufferings we experience, come from desiring happiness for oneself. Therefore, exchanging one's own happiness for the suffering of others is the practice of bodhisattvas. When pleasure and problems happen, you can see whether or not you are practicing Dharma. When a problem comes, it is like you are completely drowned in the ocean. Instead of thinking of Dharma to solve and overcome your problem, you are "under" the problem, not having control over it. When pleasure comes, you are totally distracted by it, you are under the control of worldly concern and attachment, again—like you are drowning in the ocean. This is when you can see if you are practicing Dharma or not. Because you are a human being, and not a stone or wood, you can benefit others. Even the ants or mosquitoes—you can make sure not to step on them, you can take them around holy objects, you can do what you can to benefit them. Reciting OM MANI PADME HUM three times and blowing on any sentient being purifies so much negative karma. If you aren't living to benefit others, you are living a very dry, uninteresting, boring life! Using your life to achieve enlightenment is not boring at all. Rinpoche then reviews the motivation for receiving oral transmissions and teachings. He also discusses the great yogi Thangtong Gyalpo in preparation for the oral transmissions he gives later in the teaching. Before the oral transmissions, Rinpoche explains that the benefits of reciting and hearing OM MANI PADME HUM are extensive. Rinpoche lists many of these benefits and provides commentary on each: • Reciting it one time purifies the four defeats of a fully ordained monk • Reciting it purifies the five heavy negative karmas without a break • Reciting it seven times purifies the negative karma of one hundred lifetimes • Reciting it twenty-one times purifies the negative karma of 1,000 eons • Reciting it 108 times purifies the negative karma of 40,000 eons • Anyone who hears it gets a higher rebirth • When you recite it, your mind is free from expectations and therefore pure In short, Rinpoche stresses to us that we must recite OM MANI PADME HUM while we still have a perfect human rebirth. Rinpoche then offers, “a million, zillion, trillion” thanks to all the one hundred Sangha who join together on Saturdays for twenty-four hours to recite OM MANI PADME HUM for the COVID-19 pandemic. He also thanks everybody at Chenrezig Institute who arranged all the technical aspects that allow for this to happen online. Rinpoche ends this video by offering commentary on and the oral transmissions in Tibetan of three prayers of Thangtong Gyalpo: “Liberating Sakya from Disease” (starting at 37:45 in the video), “Words of Truth Pacifying the Danger of Weapons” (39:45), and “A Request to Pacify the Fear of Famine” (42:57). Rinpoche also offers the oral transmission of King of Prayers (1:01:21), Homage to Tathagata Amitabha and Buddha Amitayus, A Brief Prayer to Be Reborn in Sukhavati (1:11:04), and The Array of Sukhavati Pure Land (1:13:15). -- Find links to the transcript, texts for the oral transmissions, translations, and more: https://fpmt.org/lama-zopa-rinpoche-news-and-advice/advice-from-lama-zopa-rinpoche/a-zillion-thanks-to-the-sangha-for-reciting-manis-during-the-pandemic/

Hello guys, Before nationalists and patriots, before colonizers and invaders, before emperors and kings, India was woven together by pilgrim paths. Seekers and sages travelled north and south, east and west, across mountains and along rivers, ignoring artificial boundaries, seeking and finding gods. Renowned mythologist Devdutt Pattanaik takes us on an insightful journey to thirty-two holy sites where ancient and modern deities unravel the complex and layered history, geography, and imagination of the land once known as ‘land of the Indian blackberry’ (Jambudvipa), ‘land of rivers’ (Sindhusthala in Sanskrit, or Hindustan in Persian), ‘expanse of King Bharata’ (Bharatvarsha, or Bharatkhanda), and even ‘abode of joy’ (Sukhavati to the Chinese). Steve Griffith is the Director and Founder of Sukhavati Ayurvedic Retreat and Spa. He has studied yoga and meditation since the 70’s and is a long term student of The Beatles meditation teacher, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi.   I sat down with Steve in Bali, talking about the importance of feeling radical love, how to be present, and how to tap into our purpose through intent.   Radically Vibrant Steve   We have to break through the conditioning that created an unconscious habit of thought patterns that no longer serve us We never totally revert back to our old patterns once we created new habits, we just have moments where we temporarily fall back into the pattern Being solution minded is a mindset that looks for an answer to a problem instead of placing blame for the problem or giving in to a false reality   Radically Inspired Clarity   Each time we think about a negative event, we trigger the same chemical response and the stress continues past the actual event Our addictions, habits, and routines hardwire our brain into a neurological pattern that keep us in the past and remove us from having new intentions and thoughts We create our story in our mind and then we walk into it just as a director creates a movie   Steve Answers…   Why did you create the Sukhavati Ayurvedic Retreat? Does it take more than intention to change our minds? What is your perspective on the amount of consumption we are intaking and...are we doomed?!   Radically Loved Quotes   “Everyone of us has this great gift of being a human, and being a human means we have free will. Whether we exercise it or not is a habitual practice of our past.”   “Stress is chemical imbalances that remove the sense of who we are.”   “The world is as you are.”   More About Our Guest   Steve Griffith is the Founder and Director of Sukhavati Retreat and Spa, creating mindful programs and teaching meditation to guests. If not, don’t start crying yet, there is still the light of hope on the Western horizon, and that’s Amitabha’s pure land. There are different levels of pure lands that can be reached by beings, depending on their abilities. If you have already achieved a high level of realization you have full choice. Would you like to be in Akanishta or is it not challenging enough for you to go there? Well, most of us might want to start trying with Sukhavati first, that is more within reach of ordinary beings who are still prone to mental afflictions. What could prevent you from going there are the five deeds of immediate retribution. But other than that, the entrance examination is comparatively easy. Once you have achieved rebirth in Sukhavati you are all set. You can achieve enlightenment either there or in any other pure realm of your choice, Alan’s favorite will be Shambala.
