There are of course innumerable similarities between the life and message of the Buddha and Swami Vivekananda: in a future lecture, I hope to sketch this out in much more detail. I think there is a particularly strong resonance between Swami Vivekananda's various spiritual experiences and realizations (and also his highest ideal of serving God man) and the Boddhicitta/Boddhisattva ideal of Mahayana Buddhism. One day, I will make a strong case for the Mahayana Buddhist interpretation of Sri Ramakrishna's life and teaching. Of course, in terms of modality, Sri Ramakrishna emphasized a Tantrik, deity-oriented approach which leads us into exciting Vajrayana territory too. A discussion comparing Nirmanakaya, Sambhogakaya and Dharmakaya to Vaikhari, Madhyama and Pasyanti Vak is of course fore coming. And I have a desire to do a short biography on Milarepaji also, perhaps on his Parinirvana which is the full moon of Bumjur Dawa (by the Tibetan Lunar Calendar) I believe. It will be around Shiva Ratri time!Naturally all these links between Shiva, Swami Vivekananda and the Buddha are particularly pronounced in Varanasi, especially near Sarnath where the Buddha spoke the words that would resound timelessly through eternity! There is a striking resemblance to what he spoke about and what Swami Vivekananda spoke out, a resemblance that is of course more tangibly felt in this place than intellectually cognized. Since I happen to be in Sarnath on Christmas Eve, I thought I'd reflect a little on that in this talk. Jai Jesus Christ! Jai Buddha! Jai Swami Vivekananda Guru Maharajji Ki Jai!Lectures happen live every Monday at 7pm PST and Friday 10am PST and again Friday at 6pm PST.Use this link and I will see you there:https://www.zoom.us/j/7028380815For more videos, guided meditations and instruction and for access to our lecture library, visit me at:https://www.patreon.com/yogawithnishTo get in on the discussion and access various spiritual materials, join our Discord here: https://discord.gg/U8zKP8yMrMAnd if you feel moved to donate to support me and this work, you're welcome to here:https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/jaimakaliSupport the show

Home Retreats help us inject some of the powerful teachings of the Buddha directly into our everyday lives. This week we're joined by Balajit, Singhashri and Viveka to talk about what lies behind their latest week-long collaborative venture with The Buddhist Centre [Live] - the enigmatically titled ‘The Three Bodies of Belonging'.  In this episode we dive into the the traditional Buddhist teaching / images / metaphors / experiences of the three kayas (‘bodies'): Dharmakaya, Samboghakaya and Nirmanakaya. These are correlated respectively, via Urygyen Sangharakshita's reading of the Tibetan yogi and mystic Milarepa, with human mind, speech and physical body. The discussion that arises out of this takes in not just what it means to belong - but also questions of longing: what the heart yearns for, how we conceive of liberation itself via an embodied and relational approach to Awakening. We explore what individuality and collectivity look and feel like in the light of the trikaya - how the whole of the teaching is pointing to human potential where we have the same faculties, senses, heart, body and mind as the Buddha and everyone else who has ever trodden this path. In that sense, like Buddhism at its best, it's a profoundly hopeful, healing conversation requiring honesty, vulnerability and a new perspective on ‘self', ‘other' and our relationships in the face of the universe. How do we change our stories to allow for genuine and profoundly transformative connection in a suffering world? How might we resource ourselves to blow open wide our own “window of tolerance” for whatever arises in life and become beings with a boundless heart? Join us on the Home Retreat - live or after the fact - to discover with other seekers the luminous and boundless possibilities beyond trauma, fear, anxiety, heartbreak and all that holds us back from a true sense of belonging. N.B. The audio quality in some parts of this recording were affected by a poor connection at times. Show Notes

On today's enlightening episode, we welcome the wise and insightful Rabbi Rami Shapiro. Rabbi Shapiro, known for his deep exploration of spiritual truths across multiple traditions, brings a refreshing and inclusive perspective to the journey of spiritual awakening. His story is one of continuous seeking and profound understanding, challenging conventional boundaries and inviting us to explore the deeper essence of spirituality.Rabbi Rami's spiritual journey began unexpectedly during his high school years. As a young Orthodox Jew, he was introduced to Asian civilizations through a course taught by two professors who had spent a summer in India. This exposure to Hinduism, Buddhism, and Taoism sparked a profound curiosity in him. During a summer meditation by a lake, he experienced a mystical state of interconnectedness and overwhelming love for the universe, a moment that profoundly shaped his spiritual path. He describes it vividly: “I knew that everything was interconnected. Everything was a manifestation of this one dynamic process, which in Buddhism might be called Dharmakaya and in Judaism, God.SPIRITUAL TAKEAWAYSInterconnectedness of All Things: Rabbi Rami emphasizes the importance of recognizing the interconnected nature of all existence. His mystical experience revealed that everything is part of a single, dynamic process, underscoring the need to live with awareness and compassion. “I knew that everything was interconnected,” he explains, pointing to the profound realization that binds us all.Breaking Free from Dogma: Rabbi Rami advocates for a spirituality that transcends rigid dogmas and embraces the wisdom found in diverse religious traditions. He encourages us to look beyond the confines of institutionalized religion and explore the deeper, mystical truths that unite us. As he puts it, “A holy rascal is curious about the deeper meaning of religion, not the self-focused nature of religious institutions.”Meditation as a Path to Truth: For Rabbi Rami, meditation is a crucial practice for connecting with the deeper, non-dual reality of existence. He practices Jewish mantra meditation and believes in its power to shift consciousness from a narrow, ego-based perspective to a more expansive, interconnected awareness. “You just let the mind do what the mind does,” he advises, “and realize you're not the mind.”Rabbi Rami's journey from aspiring Buddhist studies professor to Zen Rabbi is a testament to his belief in the fluidity of spiritual exploration. A pivotal moment came during a retreat with a Zen master who challenged him to pursue rabbinical studies. This unexpected direction led him to blend his Jewish heritage with the universal insights of Zen Buddhism, creating a unique spiritual approach that embraces the best of both worlds. In his teachings, Rabbi Rami Shapiro often speaks of the concept of the "holy rascal"—one who finds the sacred in the profane and the profound in the mundane. A holy rascal, he says, is someone who breaks the rules to get to the heart of spiritual truth, unafraid to challenge conventional wisdom and explore the depths of religious experience. “Religion is much too important to leave in the hands of professionals,” he asserts, highlighting the need for personal exploration and understanding.Rabbi Rami's work is deeply rooted in the belief that all spiritual paths lead to the same ineffable experience of the divine. He draws from various traditions, including Hinduism, Buddhism, Taoism, Christianity, and Islam, seeking the non-dual reality they all point towards. His approach is not about amalgamating different religions but finding the common thread of perennial wisdom that runs through them all.In our conversation, Rabbi Rami shared a profound quote: “There's this teaching that the universe has a hum. It's a musical thing that's happening and you can tune into it. If it's not magic, you just be quiet and listen.” This statement encapsulates his belief in the subtle, yet powerful, vibrational essence of the universe that we can all connect with through stillness and mindfulness.Rabbi Rami Shapiro's mission is to help individuals awaken to their true selves and live in harmony with the interconnected web of life. His teachings are a call to embrace our shared humanity, transcend divisive dogmas, and cultivate a deeper, more inclusive spirituality. Please enjoy my conversation with Rabbi Rami Shapiro.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/next-level-soul-podcast-with-alex-ferrari--4858435/support.

This is a really fascinating discussion if you have never heard about these theories before. Similarly, why does realizing the nature of the self liberate us from our attachments? At the same time, we speak of the body of reality. That doesn't sound very empty, and we're certainly attached to our own bodies, the living manifestation of impermanence. So what is our true body, our body of reality? We speak of the three bodies of the buddha: Nirmanakaya, Sambhogakaya and Dharmakaya. Can we understand these as aspects of ourselves?

In this episode of Enlightenment Today I will explore the two births of the Buddha and why Buddha Purnima is important to celebrate. The two births are known as the Rupakaya and Dharmakaya births. I will explain the significance of both births and how they are related to the journey Siddhartha Gautama embarked on to become the enlightened Buddha. The release of a cellphone video of the killing of an African American jogger, followed by one of a Minneapolis police killing of George Floyd, leads to a world-wide explosion of outrage over racism and police brutality. Added to the trauma of the pandemic and its associated economic collapse, we connect the failure of president Donald Trump to inspire and lead Americans and the world to a higher moral ground against an array of unprecedented challenges. The role of mindfulness is further explored as a prime coping mechanism when the whole world seems to be falling apart. How ‘noticing’ is a stepping-back without withdrawing. Zen master Rinzai’s famous quote regarding the Dharmakaya (the ‘body’ of absolute Truth) gets a close look. We investigate developing the facility and appreciation of noticing that things, most fundamentally, appear (before any other meaning we might ascribe to them). Dharmakaya koans are presented and placed into context with today’s global crises.Paul Gerstein, MDWebsite:  pandemic-zen.comIn print:  Form Is Emptiness: An Insider’s Guide to the Heart of Zen Buddhism, P. This episode is a pursuit of a feeling -- a sense of oneness with everyone in the world and everything around you. If this sounds trippy, yes I do discuss psychedelic drugs. I also talk about an odd story from the history of medical ethics, a philosophical thought experiment, and God, the internet, and toilet paper. I don't know if I really accomplish an explanation of this sense of awe at the complex web that is reality, but explaining the feeling was never really the goal I suppose...just feeling it. Special Thanks to Kirk for helping with the music for this one. The purpose of meditation is to recover the ability to see illusions for what they are, and to see reality for what it is. Only in this way can we become liberated from suffering and find the purpose of our life. The root of our suffering is a profound ignorance about reality: like a blind person running down a dangerous path to chase a figment of the imagination, we chase after illusory images but cannot see where we are going or what is around us, thus we fall into pain again and again. When we comprehend the relationship between desire and pain, we can break the cycle of suffering. That comprehension emerges from observation and understanding of facts. Explains the three causes of suffering (ignorance, craving, aversion) and the universal trinity, also called trikaya: 1. Dharmakaya: truth / reality 2. Samboghakaya: compassion / wisdom 3. Nirmanakaya: intelligent action

What better way to end a retreat than with Shantideva’s beautiful verses about embracing bodhicitta! The verses cited today are often used for the liturgy when taking the bodhisattva precepts. Shantideva’s verses are not meant as a teaching to an audience, they are more like an invitation for us in the sense of the “Ehipassiko”, the “Come and see” of the Pali canon, and Shantideva invites us into his own mind with them. When you take the Pratimoksha or the Tantric precepts, you need to receive them through a certain lineage. The guru is the channel through which you receive the blessings and the guidance of the Dharmakaya when taking these vows. The Bodhisattva precepts are an exception, you can take them even without a guru being present. The Dharmakaya and therefore the Buddha is present everywhere, and he himself will be your witness. You can then also imagine all sentient beings being present as your witnesses, too, because they are the ones you are going to serve. When we deeply resonate with this extraordinary resolve, we can just take the vows in such a way. Regarding the meditation, as we did for the teachings of Padmasambhava before, we can look through the transparent veil of Alan as the person reading it and it will be Shantideva himself speaking the verses. Guided meditation starts at 17:34 min
