Here's another fantastic conversation with Justin Barrett, cognitive scientist extraordinaire, who spends his time at the intersection of science and religion. We dove deep into why developmental psychology is such a powerful lens for understanding human nature - turns out you can't figure out if a zebra is white with black stripes or black with white stripes just by looking at adult zebras, you've got to watch how they develop. Justin walked us through the fascinating story of human evolution and our hyper-sociality, from our massive brains (five to seven times bigger than expected for mammals our size!) to our unique ability to think about each other's thoughts about our thoughts. We explored how kids naturally develop agency detection, theory of mind, and teleological reasoning - basically why three-year-olds spontaneously ask "what's that mountain for?" and start wondering about invisible agents. Then we got into the weeds about how our Stone Age minds are navigating modern technologies like social media and AI, with Justin making a compelling case using his "kudzu analogy" about technologies that spread too fast for us to understand their consequences. From the crisis of masculinity to boomers getting radicalized during COVID lockdowns, we covered how our evolved psychology is both a gift and a vulnerability in our rapidly changing world.  Check out his new book, How Can Your Faith Fuel Scientific Discovery?: Questions and Reflections for Becoming an Integrated Scientist. Justin L. Barrett is President of Blueprint 1543 and honorary Professor of Theology and the Sciences at St Andrews University School of Divinity. Barrett previously taught in Fuller Theological Seminary's School of Psychology, in the Institute of Cognitive and Evolutionary Anthropology at Oxford University, at the University of Michigan, and at Calvin University. This lecture discusses key ideas from the medieval Christin philosopher and theologian Thomas Aquinas's work, the Summa Theologiae, First Part of the Second Part, question 46 "On Anger" It focuses specifically in particular on a comparison made between anger and desire (concupiscentia), and the question as to which of them is more "natural". This requires making some distinctions about what "natural" and "nature" can mean. In some senses, anger is more natural than desire, and in others desire is more natural. Renowned Christian philosopher and theologian Dr. Paul Copan joins us to explore our shared values and address the ethical questions people are faced with when reading the Bible. He discusses how modern readers often overlook the Torah's revolutionary impact by viewing it solely through a contemporary lens, which strips it of historical context. Together, we examine the Mosaic laws in contrast to other ancient laws, like the Code of Hammurabi, revealing just how transformative the Torah was within its pagan surroundings. Dr. Copan shares his approach to interpreting morally challenging passages, applying a “charitability and Golden Rule” perspective that uncovers the depths in the Torah's narratives. Dr. Copan provides a nuanced understanding focused on careful textual analysis. He highlights the Bible's distinct stance on slavery, distinguishing it from the brutal chattel slavery of later times and showing how Judeo-Christian values contributed to its eventual abolition. Naysayers and skeptics are challenged to rethink their preconceived notions about the Torah, especially regarding topics like divine justice, slavery, capital punishment, the Wayward Son, the Sotah ritual, and other often misunderstood sections. What are we to make of what appears to be God's call to wipe out Canaanites and Amalekites? How do we understand the massive loss of life decreed by God in the Great Flood and the death of the Egyptian first-born? This is a discussion you don't want to miss. --- • Bio: Paul Copan (Ph.D., Philosophy, Marquette University) is a Christian theologian, analytic philosopher, apologist, and author. He is currently a professor at the Palm Beach Atlantic University (Florida) and holds the endowed Pledger Family Chair of Philosophy and Ethics. Nature knows best: Naturalness in the Ultra-Processed Foods Debate

The idea that more natural food – food which hasn't been transformed by human and industrial intervention – is best for us is a powerful one. Psychologists have found a strong preference for that which is “natural”, even when people differ in what they understand that term to mean. But naturalness is a muddle – we are often signalled by advertising to see heavily manufactured foods as “natural”; the pioneers of cereal manufacturing were the greatest advocates of “natural” food in the early 20th century; and it's rare that crops, which have been manipulated by human breeding over millennia, are seen as “unnatural”.  If naturalness is a slippery idea, though, it is still undeniably compelling. At the moment, nowhere is the preference for naturalness when it comes to the food we eat more prevalent than in concerns expressed over ultra-processed foods (UPFs). But does the idea that naturalness is inherently best set up a misleading dichotomy between nature and technology that doesn't serve the interests of a more sustainable and equitable food future? Does a narrow focus on processing itself misplace bigger questions of power and agency on the one hand, and unhelpfully dismiss scientific techniques on the other?TABLE writer and researcher Hester van Hensbergen explores these questions in our latest explainer, Nature Knows Best? Naturalness in the Ultra-Processed Foods Debate. She reads it out loud for you on the podcast. You can find the written explainer here.

Justin Barrett | President, Blueprint 1543"Bringing Technology to Mind: Cognitive Naturalness and Technological Enthusiasm"Sometimes new technologies spread before society has had sufficient time to evaluate them. Can we make better decisions about whether to be enthusiastic or reticent regarding new tech without waiting for thorough testing or the emergence of unintended negative consequences? In his book Why Religion Is Natural and Science Is Not (Oxford, 2011), Robert McCauley provides heuristic criteria for identifying the relative cognitive naturalness of various cultural forms and then applies these criteria to an analysis of religions and the sciences. I argue that McCauley's distinction and criteria can also give some guidance regarding how enthusiastic we should be regarding new technologies, including artifacts and systems. The sciences fare well in such an analysis. Many social media platforms and some of newer artificial intelligence programs, however, should give us pause.

Rhythmic tapping to a moving beat: motion kinematics overrules motion naturalness.

Abstract: Beat induction is the cognitive ability that allow humans to listen to a regular pulse in music and move in synchrony with it. Although auditory rhythmic cues are known to induce more consistent synchronization than flashing visual metronomes, this asymmetry can be canceled out by visual moving metronomes. Here, we investigated whether the naturalness of the visual motion or its kinematics could provide a synchronization advantage over flashing metronomes. Subjects tap in sync with visual isochronous metronomes defined by vertically or horizontally accelerating and decelerating motion, either congruent or not with natural gravity, and then continue tapping with no metronome. We found that motion kinematics was the predominant factor determining rhythm synchronization, as accelerating moving metronomes in either cardinal direction produced more precise and predictive tapping than decelerating or flashing conditions. Notably, a Bayesian observer model revealed that error correction during tapping synchronization and regression towards the mean in accuracy during tapping continuation in the absence of external cues are optimal control strategies independently of the moving properties of the visual metronomes. Our results support the notion that accelerating visual metronomes convey a strong sense of beat as seen in the cueing movements of an orchestra director. Copy rights belong to original authors. This chapter helps us understand difference between modern liberalism and the naturalness of Taoist anarchism. The Tao Te Ching expresses care for all beings, but it doesn't express such care by advocating for a highly controlled society. States, even socialist states, cause everyday people harm when they become restrictive. We've seen this to some extent in China, but especially in Cuba. To be sure, part of the problem for anti-capitalist revolutions is the fact that the global economy has its tentacles wrapped around just about everything. Nonetheless, rules alone can't change things. For another world to be possible, society needs to think less about finding ways to get people to appreciate naturalness, rather than force. Our rendition of the Tao Te Ching will be available online very soon, by the way. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/thepynp/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/thepynp/support

We have a PROBLEM in the Jeans Wear industry. Observing the scene, I realized that denim pieces are being produced with laser printing that are so far from the standards that they are almost borderline RIDICULOUS. That is why I see the importance of articles like this one. In this article, we will talk about some of the concepts and fundamentals behind laser denim. The concepts are just as important as the techniques and tools. With the concepts, you will be able to use any graphics program, and even use the concepts in manual application (sandpaper type), and thus you will get good designs. The Jeans Phenomenon A very interesting phenomenon happened with jeans. First of all, it is a component of a garment that emerged among the people, it didn't come from a laboratory, nor from a fashion company. Everything was very natural and spontaneous. Garimpeiros' clothes here, sailors' uniforms there, farmers' clothes there. Then, at some point, spontaneously, a celebrity wore one of these garments, someone took a picture of it, and soon the whole world wanted to dress the same way. This is how, almost by accident, jeans arrived in the world. Naturally, its classic characteristics were preserved, that is, its aging marks. Without them, jeans lose their beauty. Naturalness should be the primary factor in the customization of jeans. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/jeans-e-luz/message
