The Daily Buddhist: 366 Days of Wisdom for Happiness, Inner Freedom, and Mindful Living by Pema Sherpa, Brendan Barca Amazon.com Thedailybuddhist.net 366 daily doses of profound and practical Buddhist teachings for true transformation. Why do so many people still embrace the wisdom of Buddhism, even after twenty-five hundred years? The answer lies in the fact that, although the world may look different now, humans still grapple with the same fundamental challenges: overwhelming emotions, discontentment, and a longing for happiness. These are the very challenges that Buddhist philosophy can help us overcome, empowering us to transform into fearless, compassionate, and joyful individuals. Buddhism provides a framework we can use to lead a great life—one in which we are kinder, have greater resilience, are more adaptable to change, and experience greater lightness and joy. The Daily Buddhist offers daily teachings of Buddhist wisdom and practices to help us navigate the challenges of everyday life. Drawing from many of the greatest Buddhist masters throughout history—renowned Indian philosophers like Nagarjuna and Santideva; Tibetan masters like Milarepa, Patrul Rinpoche, and Chögyam Trungpa; and, of course, the Buddha himself—the authors, Buddhist scholars and practitioners, deliver daily doses of Buddhist insights tailored for 21st century living. Each day of the year, you'll receive an insightful quote from a Buddhist master paired with a thought-provoking reflection that's accessible, practical, and modern. Over the course of the year, you'll learn: How mindfulness can help you find inner peace How to make friends with yourself through meditation How to overcome difficult emotions like anger, jealousy, and anxiety Why cultivating compassion leads to happiness Why you are not your thoughts How to tame your inner critic How to discover happiness that actually lasts This profound yet practical approach to Buddhist philosophy provides tools for true transformation. By the end of the year, you'll see the world and your mind in a new light, propelling you along the path to lasting happiness, self-mastery, and inner freedom.About the author Brendan Barca is an author, keynote speaker, entrepreneur, and Buddhist practitioner. He discovered Buddhism in his twenties, initially turning to meditation to cope with stress and burnout. Since then, he has practiced Tibetan Buddhsim for years, traveling to Nepal to learn from revered masters such as Dudjom Tenzin Yeshe Dorje Rinpoche. Experiencing the transformative effects of mindfulness, meditation, and Buddhist teachings in his own life, he co-founded Brema Solutions with his wife, Pema Sherpa, to bring these invaluable principles to corporations worldwide. Together, Pema and Brendan wrote their first book, The Daily Buddhist, and also run their popular newsletter of the same name. Brendan lives with his wife and daughter Samaya in Brooklyn, NY.

On Tibetan New Year, the Friday just after Shiva Ratri, we spent some time practicing non-dual meditation (practice with us here) using the Nirvana Shatakam as a "guided meditation" tool. We sandwich some postural yoga practice to rest, recover and energize after our physical exertions over the course of the week in between two non-dual meditations, using the 6 verses of the text. Then, right after that, in honor of the great yogi Milarepa, and Tibetan Tantrik tradition, we launch into a discussion on Milarepa featuring Kavindraji who is a lineage holder of the Kagyu, the tradition Milarepa founded. By learning about Milarepa, we can learn about the Tantrik world of magic and liberation, guru and disciple and ultimate freedom. One day, we will double back to offer a more complete biography and commentary on this greatest of Yogis, Mila of the Cotton Cloth (repa) and about his householder Gurus, Marpa and Dakmema. For now, we offer this light introduction based on Lobsang P Lhalungpa's wonderful book: "The Life of Milarepa".PS: Here is our playlist on all things Shiva! Lectures happen live every Monday at 7pm PST and Friday 10am PST and again Friday at 6pm PST.Use this link and I will see you there:https://www.zoom.us/j/7028380815For more videos, guided meditations and instruction and for access to our lecture library, visit me at:https://www.patreon.com/yogawithnishTo get in on the discussion and access various spiritual materials, join our Discord here: https://discord.gg/U8zKP8yMrMSupport the show

Lama Zopa Rinpoche outlines how the Gyalwa Gyatso initiation integrates the stages of the graduated path for beings of lower, middling, and greater capacity. Rinpoche shows the parallels between each initiation and the path to enlightenment. For example, he explains how achieving the second initiation (the secret initiation) helps to achieve the illusory body, and the third initiation (the wisdom initiation) makes it possible to achieve the clear light.Rinpoche highlights that all stages of the path to enlightenment rely on the root of the path: correctly devoting to the virtuous friend. This means to see the teacher as the Buddha. Rinpoche admits that it can be difficult to talk about guru devotion when giving a Dharma teaching; however, it needs to be done out of compassion to prevent people from making grave mistakes. If people are left completely ignorant about this subject, then they would make so many mistakes, all the way through, no matter how much Dharma they learn. To show that correctly devoting to the guru depends on the disciple's side, Rinpoche gives an example from the Buddha's life story. The Buddha's attendant could only perceive faults in the Buddha. When he heard the Buddha tell a woman that she would become enlightened due to the karma of offering him a handful of grain, the attendant thought the Buddha was just flattering the woman. He failed to see any of Buddha's qualities because he hadn't trained his mind. Conversely, Milarepa had unshakeable devotion. Even when his teacher gave him a hard time for many years, all he saw was the Buddha.Rinpoche sums up how all the teachings of sutra and tantra support each other without contradiction. All the teachings of the Buddha are for one person to achieve enlightenment. Rinpoche says that having received the initiation, like the continuous flow of the river, we should continuously practice the profound yoga of the two stages based on keeping the samaya vows.Rinpoche concludes the session by emphasizing that taking this time to do the Gyalwa Gyatso initiation has become a very important preparation for death. It will give freedom to use death as a path to achieve enlightenment. He reminds us that this retreat is not just for quietening the mind, it's also for learning various ways to benefit sentient beings because we have to help them in many different ways. From April 10 to May 10, 2004, Lama Zopa Rinpoche gave extensive teachings during the Mahamudra Retreat at Buddha House in Australia. While the retreat focused on Mahamudra, Rinpoche also taught on a wide range of Lamrim topics. This retreat marked the beginning of a series of month-long retreats in Australia. Lama Zopa Rinpoche highlights the importance of practicing Guru Puja (Lama Chöpa), as it integrates many important practices. He cites Pabongka Dechen Nyingpo, who stated that the Guru Puja practice contains all the importance of the complete sutra and tantra. He also mentioned how His Holiness Song Rinpoche often praised the Lama Tsongkhapa tradition by expressing how Gyalwa Ensapa was different from Milarepa. They both achieved enlightenment in one brief lifetime during a degenerated time, but Gyalwa Ensapa did so while eating delicious food and living a comfortable life. The reason is because his heart practice was Lama Chöpa, which integrates the three deities: Yamantaka, Guhyasamaja, and Chakrasamvara.Lama Zopa says it is a very profound practice that will lead you to achieve enlightenment more quickly. Pabongka Dechen Nyingpo advised that this practice is like one key opening hundreds of doors of the Buddha's teaching. The main meaning of puja is pleasing the guru. It is only by doing so that you can achieve realizations and enlightenment.Lama Zopa urges us to make this important practice heartfelt; it shouldn't become mere words. He details the practice of generating strong bodhicitta, generating the deity, making offerings, blessing the offerings, taking vows, and dedicating the merit. From April 10 to May 10, 2004, Lama Zopa Rinpoche gave extensive teachings during the Mahamudra Retreat at Buddha House in Australia. A reading of one of Milarepa's songs taken from the text, Drinking the Mountain Stream: Songs of Tibet's Beloved Saint, Milarepa. Translated by Brian Cutillo and Kunga Thartse. Milarepa is one of the most important yogis and spiritual poets in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition, but very little of his life is known with any historical certainty. Even the dates of his birth and death have been notoriously difficult to calculate. In any case, it is clear that he lived during the eleventh and early-twelfth centuries, at the advent of the latter dissemination of Buddhism in Tibet. At his mother's request, Milarepa left home and studied sorcery to take revenge on their cruel relatives, killing many people. Later he felt sorrow about his deeds, and became a student of Marpa the Translator. Eventually, Marpa accepted him, explaining that the trials were a means to purify Milarepa's negative karma. Lama Zopa Rinpoche explains how, through making requests from your heart to the root guru and the three-time buddhas and receiving the blessing of the guru, it's possible to see the conventional nature of the mind and achieve clarity. To see the ultimate nature of the mind, it depends on collecting merits and purifying defilements. That is the only direct method to liberate oneself from the unimaginable oceans of samsaric suffering and cause, all the negative emotional thoughts, the action and karma, the very root, which is the unknowing mind. Unable to see the I which exists and believing in the I which doesn't exist, is the root of all our sufferings. You do not see the I which exists and its nature: experiences happiness, experiences suffering, creates the cause of happiness, creates the cause of suffering; but you believe in the I which doesn't exist, which is not there, believing it exists. We are constantly tortured by that ignorance, from the time without beginning, from beginningless samsaric rebirth we are tortured by ignorance. Normally people either do not know karma, do not have full knowledge, which includes karma and reincarnation, or have studied, do have an idea of karma, but in daily life don't think about that, it's left in the text. They don't relate what Buddha said or what the lamrim says in their real life. Some people always practice, day and night, even sleeping becomes yoga; yoga of washing, yoga of eating. That person can practice pure Dharma. Then every day they'll feel the courage to protect themself from delusion naturally, without difficulties. The root of samsara is ignorance, this is the great enemy in your life and whenever you practice Dharma, whenever your mind becomes Dharma, from that you achieve only happiness, no suffering. As much as possible, strong practice of purification, collecting extensive merit and guru yoga to receive blessings can bring our gross mind closer to realising emptiness. Lama Zopa Rinpoche shares the story of Milarepa's life to show us that by strong devotion and mind development in the path we can free ourselves from all sufferings. From April 10 to May 10, 2004, Lama Zopa Rinpoche gave extensive teachings during the Mahamudra Retreat at Buddha House in Australia. Home Retreats help us inject some of the powerful teachings of the Buddha directly into our everyday lives. This week we're joined by Balajit, Singhashri and Viveka to talk about what lies behind their latest week-long collaborative venture with The Buddhist Centre [Live] - the enigmatically titled ‘The Three Bodies of Belonging'.  In this episode we dive into the the traditional Buddhist teaching / images / metaphors / experiences of the three kayas (‘bodies'): Dharmakaya, Samboghakaya and Nirmanakaya. These are correlated respectively, via Urygyen Sangharakshita's reading of the Tibetan yogi and mystic Milarepa, with human mind, speech and physical body. The discussion that arises out of this takes in not just what it means to belong - but also questions of longing: what the heart yearns for, how we conceive of liberation itself via an embodied and relational approach to Awakening. We explore what individuality and collectivity look and feel like in the light of the trikaya - how the whole of the teaching is pointing to human potential where we have the same faculties, senses, heart, body and mind as the Buddha and everyone else who has ever trodden this path. In that sense, like Buddhism at its best, it's a profoundly hopeful, healing conversation requiring honesty, vulnerability and a new perspective on ‘self', ‘other' and our relationships in the face of the universe. How do we change our stories to allow for genuine and profoundly transformative connection in a suffering world? How might we resource ourselves to blow open wide our own “window of tolerance” for whatever arises in life and become beings with a boundless heart? Join us on the Home Retreat - live or after the fact - to discover with other seekers the luminous and boundless possibilities beyond trauma, fear, anxiety, heartbreak and all that holds us back from a true sense of belonging. Mount Kailash remains one of the greatest climbing mysteries, with all attempts by experienced mountaineers ending in failure. The mountain's ever-changing position disorients climbers, and mysterious blockages often appear on the paths. According to Tibetan folklore, an 11th-century Buddhist monk named Milarepa is the only person to have ever reached the summit. After his successful climb, Milarepa warned others not to attempt the ascent. Since then, no one else has been able to conquer Mount Kailash. In today's episode of "Fabulously Delicious: The French Food Podcast," we continue our fascinating A to Z series on French herbs with a deep dive into the intriguing world of nettles, or "Les Orties" as they are known in French. Host Andrew Prior enlightens us with the botanical history of nettles, tracing back to 1753 when Carl Linnaeus classified them as Urtica dioica. Listeners will discover the etymology of "Urtica," derived from the Latin "uro," meaning to burn or sting, and "dioica," from the Greek word for two houses. This episode brims with fascinating facts, such as the discovery by botanist Charles Naudin that a strong wind can render nettle stings harmless. Exploring the historical and cultural significance of nettles, Andrew reveals their role in the nitrogen cycle and their surprising utility during wartime, such as the German army's use of nettle fibers for uniforms in World War I. Nettles have also been significant in various traditions and legends, from Julius Caesar's troops using them for alertness to the Tibetan saint Milarepa's green skin from prolonged use. We also learn about the practical applications of nettles in ancient textiles, paper production, and even cheese making in France, highlighting their versatility beyond their notorious sting. For culinary enthusiasts, the episode offers a delightful surprise: Andrew's favorite recipe for nettle soup. He walks us through the process of transforming these wild plants into a delicious and nutritious meal. Nettles, rich in vitamins A, B, and C, along with essential minerals, are not just a historical or botanical curiosity but a contemporary superfood. This episode of "Fabulously Delicious: The French Food Podcast" not only enriches our understanding of "Les Orties" but also invites us to appreciate their unique place in French culinary and cultural heritage.

To je zgodba o razumevanju prave narave stvari. Iz budističnega stališča sta relativna celo čas in prostor, zaradi česar nimata nespremenljivega, trdnega obstoja. Različni dogodki lahko v istem prostoru potekajo istočasno. To lepo prikazuje zgodba o tibetanskem mojstru Milarepi in jakovem rogu.

Since the priest could not answer he rode to the library at 12 and found himself reading the Bhagavad-gītā, the Quran, and finally found the Buddha's teachings.Later in life, he practiced Theravada Buddhism, but as time went by he started noticing that he was very into Tibetan Buddhism. That's when life brought him to Karma Kagyu where he found teachings from Karmapa and Sharmapa. He was not sure being a monk was his path, but after praying to Milarepa he found Garchen Rinpoche who taught him the way of Mahamudra. And today he's here to share with us his perspective on suffering. If you want to learn more about Ngakpa, follow him on social media:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/ngakpakonchokdorjetsondon/Podcast produced by Brilliant Futures Productions.Sponsored by Delaflor Teachings Int.

The spiritual legacy of Paramahansa Yogananda merely begins with the Autobiography of a Yogi. How much of his ‘literary corpus' have you read? The ‘Author's Acknowledgements‘ are quite revealing if you scratch beneath the surface, the life of Tara Mata for example provides an inspiration for us all. The reader's first glance at the contents page can be quite daunting as well as exciting, as an aside, we discuss our favourite illustration in the book. Dr Evans-Wentz' beautiful ode to the author and Swami Sri Yukteshwar was certainly quite revealing and his books certainly had a massive influence on shaping the western awareness Tibetan Buddhism, we do our best to provide a background to this illustrious soul's life as well as his epic works. 0:00 Summary of Section of AoY covered; 1:49 Spiritual Legacy of Parmahansa Yogananda; 19:15 Author's Acknowledgements; 27:29 Contents and Illustrations; 53:19 Preface and Dr. Evans-Wentz; 1:11:05 Tibetan Book of the Dead and Milarepa. This is meditation on the Nature of the Mind by Lama Shabkar taken from the text, "The Flight of the Garuda" - translated by Keith Dowman. Shabkar Tsokdruk Rangdrol (1781-1851) was a Tibetan Buddhist yogi and poet from Amdo. Shabkar's yogic and poetic skill is considered second only to Milarepa. Shabkar begin his spiritual practice early, completing a one-year retreat at the age of 16, later becoming a Gelug monk at 20. Shabkar studied with masters of all major Tibetan Buddhist schools including Gelug and Nyingma, and received Dzogchen teachings from his main root guru Chögyal Ngakgi Wangpo. He spent years in solitary retreats in various caves, woods and mountains of Tibet. Shabkar's works express non-sectarian ideals similar to those of the 19th century Rimé movement, even though he predates the movement by about three decades and never met with any of the Rime masters from Kham.

Lama Zopa Rinpoche continued his https://fpmt.org/fpmt/announcements/resources-for-coronavirus-pandemic/advice-from-lama-zopa-rinpoche-for-coronavirus/#video-teachings (video teachings on thought transformation) from Amitabha Buddhist Centre in Singapore in August. Here is a summary of the teaching offered on August 16, 2022: Rinpoche offers some of the history of how he began teaching courses at Kopan Monastery in Nepal and how the FPMT organization began (starting at 28:12). Real happiness comes from a good heart, Rinpoche reminds us, not come from the outside. Using the example of Milarepa, who externally had nothing but had incredible realizations and inner peace and happiness, we can see that happiness comes from the mind, not from what we have. Believing that happiness comes from outside, including how much wealth we accumulate, causes great suffering and dissatisfaction, as well as so much worry and fear. For those of us living as lay couples, Rinpoche advises that we practice the ten virtues together and Rinpoche also suggests practicing the ten Dharma conducts.

José Cabezón: Teaching Tibetan Buddhism as Professor and Practitioner

The Circled Square

Description José Cabezón is the Dalai Lama Professor of Buddhist Studies at the University of California Santa Barbara. Among his many contributions to the field of Buddhist Studies, José served as the president of the American Academy of Religion in 2020 and his Presidential Address (published in the Journal of the American Academy of Religion in September 2021) surveyed the study of Buddhism in North America as an academic discipline within religious studies. In this episode, he reflects on how he balances his research with teaching various undergraduate and graduate courses. His teaching is organised around a spectrum of topics that give students skills they need while also developing their engagement with Buddhism, historical and in the contemporary moment. He brings his own experiences as a Buddhist monk into his courses which can help students engage with the worlds of religion and the context of Tibetan Buddhism, which is foreign to most undergraduate students in the US. In addition to reflecting on how his teaching has changed during his career, he also analyses how the backgrounds, interests, and skill-sets of his undergraduate students have shifted. Are humanities degrees less “pragmatic” than other programs? We invite you to listen and hear how José would respond to this assumption.  Memorable Quotes “I'm a Buddhist and I have a long background as a Buddhist. Many of my colleagues have said that they'd like to keep students guessing about their own religious background and that this serves a good pedagogical function in the class that kind of keeps students asking questions and wondering what the professors' relationship to the material is. I, from the very beginning, have taken a different tack, and I've kind of come clean at the beginning about what my background is, the fact that I was a Buddhist monk for ten years.” José Cabezón “I have a colleague who retired recently. She works in the area of religion and cognitive science. We talked about this once, about whether or not it was legally kosher to teach meditation in a public university. Her response to me, I thought it was very interesting that she said "athletes are trained and they're told to do things, so why is this any different?" José Cabezón “In the case of Tibet, it is important to kind of break stereotypes. I mean, the glamorization or the fetishization of Tibet as a kind of magical, mystical place where there's flying lamas and things like that.” José Cabezón “Simply to be able to see the history of Tibet presented, at least until a certain period of time, but more or less independent of Chinese history, that it isn't as the history of a province of China, that Tibet kind of had its own history up until the present, that in itself is kind of eye opening for many students.” José Cabezón “The goal in the undergraduate course, as I said, is to kind of expose them to a culture that's very different from their own and to have them think about what it means that there are people in the world who think in this very different way. In the graduate classroom it's really to prepare them to be experts in Buddhism.” José Cabezón “The language class is a kind of third component to my teaching that in many ways is my favorite form of teaching because I like reading texts and I like reading texts with the graduate students. Apart from teaching them Tibetan and the nuances of reading classical Tibetan, it's also an opportunity to have them think critically about texts, to teach them to ask questions about what the text is saying.” José Cabezón “Undergraduates have changed insofar as we have fewer majors than we used to, maybe about a third of the majors that we used to have. I think when I first arrived here religious studies had something like 200 majors and now we have maybe 60 or 70. This is true across every discipline of the humanities, it's not just religious studies. In part, I think that's because students are thinking and they're being pushed by parents to think more pragmatically, and they tend to think that humanities degrees, degrees in religious studies aren't useful for future careers. So as a result, they tend to major in something else, but they still love the study of religion and they still love the study of Buddhism.” José Cabezón “There is a kind of more pragmatic, professionalized mindset among undergraduates now than there was, say, 20 years ago when I first arrived at UCSB.” José Cabezón “At the graduate level, maybe there's more concern about professional issues, like kind of preparing for the professorhood. I mean, when I was a graduate student, we basically took classes almost in a kind of haphazard way. I think if I saw a syllabus at all throughout my entire graduate training, I don't really remember it. It was mostly the professor would come in and say, "okay, now we're going to read this book" or "now we're going to study this text", and it was very disorganized, but also kind of refreshing.” José Cabezón "I tend to think about what makes for interesting conversations rather than what's going to make the field or the discipline grow. I think people of my generation, in fact, I think all buddhologists in general don't think very much, at least I don't think very much about what the future will bring. I think more about trying to wrap up a project I started a long time ago and try to finish. So I really don't have these kind of broad visions about what the future should be like.” José Cabezón “The whole idea of approaching religion, approaching Buddhism objectively or scientifically, or maintaining critical distance from Buddhism as an object of study really wasn't as strong as it is today. I mean, today people talk about the insider/outsider question and whether or not insiders are kind of compromised or whether an insider perspective gives you a greater sympathy or understanding for the religion. These questions weren't really being asked when I first started, and therefore maybe we just kind of approached the study of Buddhism naively, in many ways.” José Cabezón Links and References José Cabezón's profile page at the Department of Religious Studies, University of California Santa Barbara The 84000 Initiative The Life of Milarepa by Tsangnyön Heruka, introduction by Donald Lopez, translation by Andrew Quintman  Tibetan Lamrim Introduction to Tibetan Buddhism by John Powers The Buddha directed by David Grubin 2020 AAR Presidential Address: The Study of Buddhism and the AAR Tantric Mysticism Of Tibet by John Blofeld

Welcome to that new series, when we talk about mahasiddhas we most of the time think that we'll tomorrow I will do the six yoga of Naropa for example. The truth is to get to the mastery of siddhas we need to put way more in practice, at the moment there is what I can call the Tummo thirst what bring very weird things. I saw from my eyes people without training without empowerment trying to do so. Back in day Garchen Rinpoche himself train me for tummo when I was his assistant but more than that I have receive training, teaching that I carry on receive and it take time to master. Yes back in the mahasiddhas well to be a siddhas good news you don't need to run to the Himalaya to be a siddhas, because if you took all the indian and Tibetan history of both Hindu, Jains, Buddhist, Sikh of the siddhas. Well there is as much different siddhas that the sand in the Ganges river. Now when we focus on Buddhist well just at the origin 84 proper example to follow that include in the Kagyu Lineage Tilopa and Naropa. When we cross border in Nepal and Tibet we going into a very wild range of Siddhas. Milarepa or Marpa yes both siddhas different style I can say. What make a siddhas or not To not be siddhas You can't practice everywhere You got a shrine not flexible fighting with what is That just few examples but yes if you go this way that still a good way because you practice.
