This week on Black Hoodie Alchemy, my cohort Seedperson1 and I build off of the discussions we've had in the last two episodes (shoutout to Chris Fiato!) as we dive into the history of modern parapsychology. What did these diligent scientists -- funded by the prestigious Duke University -- find out about extra-sensory perception over their decades of study? Get your inner X-Man on this episode as we talk about people being tested in labs for telepathy, clairvoyance, remote viewing, telekinesis, and more! We also try and understand the distinctions between what one might call ESP and what one might call "mysticism" or "spiritualism" involving trance states. It's a bit of psychology, statistics, sociology, pharmacology, chaos theory, maybe some quantum theory, a lot of Jungian and Hermetic sentiments, and so much more coming together this week as we dive down this historical rabbit-hole and sink our teeth into the meat of the data. In S4E8 I sit down with author, researcher, musician and award-winning documentary producer, Ronnie Pontiac. Ronnie and his long term partner Tamra Lucid also collaborate to form the rock duo Lucid Nation and were both closely mentored at an early age by the famed 20th century occultist and scholar of comparative religions Manly Palmer Hall. I sat down with Ronnie to discuss music, disenchantment, magic, the Orphic mysteries and more. Toward the end of our discussion, Ronnie reveals candid details about the final days of his mentor Manly Hall. This week on Black Hoodie Alchemy, we have another special guest: the wonderful, talented and laid-back Ronnie Pontiac. Ronnie is the author of books like 'American Metaphysical Religion: Esoteric and Mystical Traditions of the New World', he's part of the punk rock duo Lucid Nation with his wife Tamra Lucid, and he also just so happened to work as the great Manly P. Hall's research assistant and substitute lecturer for the last seven years of Hall's life. For the first half of the show, we talk about the legacy of Manly Hall as seen and experienced by Ronnie and his wife, who were completely taken under the wing of Hall and his wife in a relationship that eventually grew to feel like grandparents and grandchildren. Ronnie shares many candid stories about Manly Hall and gives us further insights into his philosophies and personal conduct, but beyond this we also get into Ronnie's work 'American Metaphysical Religion', and what it means to consider American spirituality from an outside perspective that focuses less on labels and more on actual conduct. The insights from these perspectives are huge, and include contexts like, for instance, all of the alchemists that were prevalent in Colonial America. Yes, the history of America is a whole lot more esoteric than the 'Pilgrim' stereotypes would lead us believe, and with all this context, Ronnie helps me take a look at modern American spirituality as well. And if that wasn't enough, we also get a little bit into the philosophies of DIY punk rock and even astrology! It was a great pleasure sitting down to chat with Ronnie, and we will definitely be getting him back on the show before too long -- we hope you dig it. my linktree with my books & more Ronnie on Instagram Ronnie on 'Medium' Ronnie's books on Amazon Tamra's book about Manly Hall This week's featured music is brought to you by the wild punk talents of LUCID NATION -- music done by the guest and his wife, Ronnie Pontiac and Tamra Lucid! In this episode, the esoteric scholar Ronnie Pontiac returns to talk about his latest book: The Magic of the Orphic Hymns: A New Translation for the Modern Mystic.Co-authored by Tamra Lucid, his wife, this brilliant collaboration takes the reader on a winding journey through history, striking a perfect balance between dense scholarship and poetic musing. And they conclude with their own renditions of the hymns, beautifully distilled with poetic skill and the finesse of musicians. Reading this book feels like uncorking a dusty bottle of ancient spirits. The history is allowed to breathe, inviting you to swirl things around and develop your own taste for the mysteries of Orpheus. Tamra and Ronnie present the Orphic Hymns as being much more than beautiful relics. The hymns are magical, invoking the past as the eternal present and inspiring a prismatic vision of the divine. Many decades of research and experiments inspired The Magic of the Orphic Hymns. In their early 20's, Tamra and Ronnie were mentored by the legendary, Manly P. Hall. And when they were asked to help him with a republication of the Orphic Hymns, they fell in love with these ancient rituals. In this interview, Ronnie and I discuss:How an OG episode of Star Trek inspired Ronnie's first religious experience. Why the Orphic Hymns have been called “the most powerful form of magic.”Personal stories of real magical results from the Orphic hymns. Ronnie Pontiac discusses his new book, The Magic of the Orphic Hymns: A New Translation for the Modern Mystic. Tamra Lucid and Ronnie Pontiac present new literary translations of the Orphic Hymns that reveal their power to attune the reader to the sacred presence of the Orphic Mysteries and the higher order of nature. These translations restore important esoteric details and correspondences about the being or deity to which each hymn is addressed, offering a deeper understanding of these ancient texts. The famous philosopher Marsilio Ficino once wrote that the Orphic Hymns were the most powerful form of magic. These hymns were not just poems but were used for meditation, rituals, and ceremonies. Each hymn was dedicated to a specific deity or virtue, like Athena, Zeus, Love, Justice, or Equality. However, the original hymns were written formulaically, which made them difficult to translate. Tamra Lucid and Ronnie Pontiac have brought back the magical essence of the mystery cults of the past through their new versions of the teletai. They have included important hidden details and correspondences about the being or deity to which each hymn is addressed. They have also added a new version of a lost hymn called "Number" and messages that were inscribed on golden leaves meant to be passports for the dead. These reinventions preserve the original magical intent and mysticism of the teletai. Furthermore, the authors reveal the power of each hymn to attune the reader to the sacred presence of the Orphic Mysteries and the higher order of nature. They also demonstrate how the Orphic Hymns are a book of hours or a calendar of life, covering every event, from birth to death, and guiding us through every experience of human existence as necessary and holy. Yet despite the mystical concepts underlying them, the original hymns were formulaic, creating an obstacle for translators.Recapturing the magical vitality that inspired mystery cults through the ages, Tamra Lucid and Ronnie Pontiac present new versions of the teletai that include important esoteric details and correspondences about the being or deity to which each hymn is addressed. Do you remember the wonderful talk with Tamra Lucid we had on S/ E18 back in January, about her really lovely book on Manly P Hall and the 8o's around him in L.A. Well, ny guest today on this second Special Anniversary Episode is Ronnie Pontiac. He is many things at once. He is now Tamra's partner and husband (she actually makes a quick appearance in the beginning to introduce him) - remember, they got married by Manly P Hall. He is like Tamra a wonderful musician. He became Manly P Hall substitute speaker and was very close to Mr Hall in those seven years. So he is in a way next to Mr. Hall the "other protagonist" of Tamra's book, hence the title of this epiosde. But Ronnie is also an excellent writer and teacher preparing the release of two books to come, so we will certainly hear of him again on the podcast.

Tamra Lucid is a force of nature: a veritable renaissance woman of the 21st Century. She has been a prolific artist for decades, sharing her light with the world through music, underground art, filmmaking and writing. It is obvious that Tamra was born to be a bright light in the dark. But she got her start on this path by having a great mentor in her youth: the legendary esoteric scholar, Manly P. Hall. What must it have been like to be mentored by Manly P. Hall? Lucky for us, Tamra has finally published her memoirs called: Making the Ordinary Extraordinary: My Seven Years in Occult Los Angeles with Manly Palmer Hall. Tamra's story is extraordinary. In the haze of her nihilistic youth back in the early 1980's, she serendipitously met the elderly Manly P. Hall. And with an age difference of over 60 years, he became like a surrogate grandfather offering her the love, guidance and sanctuary she needed.Making the Ordinary Extraordinary: My Seven Years in Occult Los Angeles with Manly Palmer Hall exquisitely captures the last moments in history before the internet swallowed reality. Sitting at this precipice between eras stands the great historical figure of Manly P. Hall, still studying and lecturing at his library as he had for many decades. Back in the 1920's and 30's, Manly P. Hall rose to become the rockstar celebrity of the esoteric world. His legend has lived on, meaning there's been nearly a century of praise and accolades for his accomplishments as a scholar. Conversely, there are many rumors and conspiracies that abound. Sadly, such extreme praise and suspicion tends to overshadow the human.I've been deeply enamored with the legend of Manly P. Hall for many years. Until I read Tamra's book, he always seemed far away, like the light of a distant star. However, Tamra's tender account of their deep friendship brought his spirit to life for me. The “Mr. Hall” described in this book is so personable, so funny and so tragic that you'll truly fall in love with him. Even if you've never heard of Manly P. Hall, I still recommend that you read this book because it will be a magnificent introduction to appreciating his historical significance. And it is a really pleasurable read: sensual prose guided by a romantic spirit to stir your soul with a montage of vivid memories. You fall in love with all the characters as you span time together. And by the end, you'll feel like you were there to witness all the bliss and the horror of the 1980's L.A. occult scene.Suffice it to say, the whole story is tragi-comic, just like real life. In this episode, I speak with Tamra about her life, her art, and the experience of writing this book during the pandemic. And we deepen the exploration of Manly P. Hall's amazing life and tragic death by looking at his natal chart together. By examining his placements, including his three planets in Pisces, we find more context for the traits he expressed publicly and those that he kept hidden. Not only that, but we dive into the transits that occurred during the last days of his life, speculating about whether the suspicious circumstances of his death were in fact murder.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/aeolianheart)

Manly Palmer Hall is a focus of TAMRA LUCID‘s book, Making the Ordinary Extraordinary, as she experiences his influence into a spiritually deeper life. This of course had great influence on her artistic endeavors as she moves through life.
In this episode, I am joined by Tamra Lucid, musician, riot girl, documentary producer and author of the recently published Making the Ordinary Extraordinary: My Seven Years in Occult Los Angeles with Many Palmer Hall. Along with talking about her experience with Manly Palmer Hall, Tamra discusses his wife Marie, who was a mystic and philosopher in her own right who had developed a map of consciousness, Tamra talks about the value of dusty old books, the importance of wisdom over smarts, and music as a metaphysical experiment. We also take a moment to reminisce about the dearly departed Bodhi Tree Bookstore in West Los Angles. Please welcome my very first guest in this new year, interviewer, producer, author and musician, Tamra Lucid as we'll be having a wonderful time talking about her book ‘Making the Ordinary Extraordinary - My Seven Years in Occult Los Angeles with Manly Palmer Hall' which has just been published with Inner Traditions. This book is a rarely found gem that starts out with the touching account of how Tamra and her later husband Ronnie Pontiac met at an underground club in the 80s back in L.A. and how he - despite of not exactly looking like a prince on a white horse - literally saved her from a pretty dangerous situation. They moved in together two weeks later and soon discovered Manly P. Hall's opus magnum, ‘The Secret Teachings of All Ages'. Both were simply amazed by the writings and when they found out that ‘Mr. Hall' as Tamra prefers to call him to this day they decided to attend his lectures with the Philosophical Research Society. "PRS had lovely staff-and-friends Xmas parties. Everyone looked forward to seeing Mr. Hall saunter in with a warm smile on his face, greeting everyone, causing us all to grin like idiots. The feeling was more family than any family event I'd ever attended. Cards and gifts were exchanged. I remember one year Roger Weir gave MPH a huge tome about Alexandria I was so eager to peruse, but I never got to because MPH had it in the shelf behind his desk, and I didn't want to bother him. In this pic MPH is eyeing the cookies wrapped in red and green cellophane. Wasn't Marie beautiful? She was over 80 then. Notice my festive holiday fashion sense: black. Capricorn much? Hovering behind me protectively is Ronnie Pontiac" * Tamra tells how she and Ronnie became involved with Manly P. Hall and his wife Marie on an intimate level so that Mr. Hall hired her and chose Ronnie as a proof reader for his alchemical bibliography. They both became close friends with the Halls and because of that their lives changed completely which Tamra explains in detail. In our conversation, we talk about psychological issues, alchemical transmutations, how the newly created genre of Riot Grrrl Music came into play with all that and how Tamra combined all this with metaphysics by means of a healing process. We go into great depths on Mr. Hall's personality, his ideal to be of service and his vision of a truly happy, resilient and spiritual society and what might be needed in order to establish it. Tamra will also talk about the break up with the Halls which was and still is a tragic and sad one and had far reaching implications on both sides. However, we proceed with some less difficult issues when we discuss the meaning of Hall's teachings for today's society and today's students of the Western Esoteric Traditions. My guest will finally explain her personal daily practice which is something she hasn't done in her writings yet and also give some glimpses on future book projects with Inner Traditions that she or Ronnie are parts of. "The ceremony took place in the Hall's backyard. They picked the time and date. Look! It's Ronnie with short hair! In a suit! He still looks like an anime villain though. If you want to know who the handsome maid-of-honor on my left is you'll have to read my book. Let's just say that the maid-of-honor and the best man were a lovely couple. The best man wrote Spiritualist books and the maid-of-honor was a past life regression therapist who made the most heavenly apricot jam" * * The texts under the images are by Tamra Lucid herself, from her facebook page Music played in this episode The three tracks are performed by LUCID NATION, Tamra's own band which she also talks about in the interview.
