If you grew up reading horoscopes, there's a good chance you know Susan Miller. For many of us, she was our gateway to astrology. Her journey into the stars was profoundly personal. At 14, facing a challenging health journey, Susan turned to astrology under the tutelage of her mother, a scholar of the cosmic arts. This foundation not only nurtured her resilience but also ignited a passion that would lead her to become one of the most trusted voices in astrology today.Susan is a National Treasure of Astrology. I'm still unsure exactly how I had the great fortune of befriending her, but I hope this is the first of many recorded conversations between us!Curious to learn more about Susan's story? Lindsey Turner aka Bad Pastor is a consulting astrologer and ordained minister who teaches and writes at the intersections of astrology, liberationist Christianity, and queer identity. I pulled that from their official bio. I'll add that they're simply a delight and every time I talk to them I walk away inspired. They're also a reason I moved to LA: it's closer to Santa Fe than Detroit, and one of these days I'll make it to the monthly astro gathering they host with Samuel F Reynolds. The following conversation is the second one we've recorded together. (You can watch the first here.) We get a little into the year ahead, spend some moments digesting the astrological storm of March & April, but mostly this is a conversation spent getting to know each other. If this is your first time getting to know Lindsey and their work, congrats! It's my pleasure to introduce them to you. If you're in LA come see Lindsey in person talking about astrological applications of non-violent communication at LA Astro Fest happening over the weekend of April 25th — 27th. My guest this episode is writer, scholar, teacher, and astrologer, RONNIE PONTIAC. I've been impressed and informed by Ronnie's esoteric work for awhile now, and finally, we got to have our first conversation. And it's a profound one...We talk about the need for a spiritual path in our moment, and how the alternative is... well, quite grim. We talk about how spirituality can lead us into a path of hatred and personal gain. We talk about my suspicion about astrology, how I think it works, how I think it does't work, why so much of it is wrong (and why Ronnie is so often right!). And there's so much more on this episode (Including my extended intro on the esoteric aim of being a Friend To Humanity.)Ronnie was a key figure at the Philosophical Research Society founded in 1934 by Manly Palmer Hall. The PRS is still around, and promotes, teaches, and offers research opportunities into the esoteric & philosophical of all societies; with the values of freedom, community, objective study, and inclusiveness at its core. He's the author most recently of American Metaphysical Religion: Esoteric and Mystical Traditions of the New World. His forthcoming book, which can preorder now, is The Rosicrucian Counterculture: The Origins and Influence of the Invisible Society.

Matt is the author of Buddhist Bubblegum: Esotericism in the Creative Process of Arthur Russell ("groundbreaking work," New York Times), and the producer/host of Secret Sound, a podcast exploring the metaphysical biopics of American musicians, and The Hidden Present, an audio interview series exploring intuitive discipline and spiritual imagination. His writing, research, media production, and personal archive constitute the American Museum of Paramusicology (AMP), through which he also publishes the monthly AMP Journal. Matt's visual art and music are often rooted in his own dreamwork divination practice--the Astramira or "Wondering Stars." This work has been featured as a solo art exhibition at Greensboro Project Space, as well as through releases of instrumental guitar music and dream songs. His album of solo acoustic guitar music, The Living Mirror, was released by UK label The Crystal Cabinet in 2021. Matt holds a BA in speech & hearing science from Portland State University, a PhD in music composition from Princeton University, and a black rattlesnake from his dreams. Additional works have been featured by the California Festival, Warp Records, and the Philosophical Research Society. His writing, research, media production, and personal archive constitute the American Museum of Paramusicology (AMP), through which he also publishes the monthly AMP Journal. The term “paramusicology” was first coined in 1993 by author Melvyn Willin to address psychic and pagan histories of music. Musicology being the study of music, paramusicology is the study of paranormal music experience. Though the term has struggled to find solid footing, the paranormal generally refers us to that which is "beyond" or “outside” the normal—to experiences or phenomena which cannot be explained by scientific reasoning, objective perception, or causal agency. This points our awareness to what may be called the numinous* in human experience. Due to its abstract nature, to even convey the numinous requires active imagination and symbolic communication. The AMP explores how the numinous informs human listening. And it unpacks the esoteric philosophies and intuitive disciplines which facilitate and draw from our spiritual and auditory imagination. In this discussion, Matt shares a bit about his background, as well as his inspiration for creating his platform. He talks about his visual art project known as Wondering Stars, a mixture of music and physical visual works, and how this came out of his dreamwork. He also talks about his podcast, The Secret Sound, and his 7-part series called The Hidden Present, and we even go into a short discussion about musical modes (as used in Western music - (*thanks to my brother Dan for making that distinction) and their ‘moods', as well as how these can be useful tools for creativity. We then move to talk about the AMP Journal, and focus on Issue 16 from last August called “Spirit Invocations.” In this issues, Matt wrote about the film Longlegs and how sound (not ‘song', as I misspoke in the introduction) is key to this film, including the role of folk music and rock and roll and the esoteric aspects of these, along with how Marc Bolan served as inspiration and perhaps as blueprint of sorts for the main character. He also discusses the concept of the Fohat ( taken from the Theosophical Society) and how this may have inspired the ideas behind the metal balls that Longlegs placed inside the doll heads in the film.PROGRAM NOTEShttps://www.mattmarble.net/matt-marble (all links at the top of the page)https://www.mattmarble.net/buddhist-bubblegumhttps://www.mattmarble.net/amp-longlegshttps://mattmarble.bandcamp.com/https://www.youtube.com/@AmericanMuseumofParamusicologyhttps://www.instagram.com/americanmuseumofparamusicology/Full episode can be found at https://www.patreon.com/RejectedReligion, or purchased for a one-time fee. Her latest book, Modern Magic: Stories, Rituals, and Spells for Contemporary Witches was released in the fall of 2024 — not too long before our interview was recorded. A lot has changed since then. Martin Lewis is a multi-faceted player in the spheres of the arts and entertainment. With a fabled five-decade history working in music, comedy, film, stage, TV, radio & books. He has been a cultural alchemist with many of the leading musicians and comedic artists of the last half-century. Bruce Vilanch is iconic for, among other things, the best jokes at the Academy Awards. He has been writing for the star-studded event for over 25 years, and has been the head writer since 2000. Bruce is much more ingrained into our culture than a single award show, however-- he. has written jokes for Bette Midler, Elizabeth Taylor, Lily Tomlin, and even..The Brady Bunch. They each have been world-changing "influencers" decades before the concept of "influencers" was even a thing. Today they join us to talk about yet another cultural force, artist manager, Brian Epstein. It has been said of Epstein: "If there had been no Epstein, there would be no Beatles." Brian Epstein is the man responsible for taking the Beatles from unknowns to worldwide phenomena in just under 50 days. Martin led a 15-year campaign to induct Epstein into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Friday, August 23rd marks the exact 60th anniversary of the Beatles' landmark first appearance in Los Angeles in 1964. Their L.A. debut was a sold-out concert at the Hollywood Bowl. Celebrating that historic occasion Martin - considered one of the world's foremost Beatles scholars - will be debuting a special ‘TED-Talk' style illustrated presentation in L.A. - titled "The Greatest Beatles Story NEVER Told! The Untold Tale Of How The Beatles Beguiled America" The event will take place on the exact same date and time as the Beatles Hollywood Bowl concert in 1964 - at the historic building of the Philosophical Research Society in Los Feliz.

Recorded live at The Philosophical Research Society on Friday, June 14th 2024. Why are so many cinematic depictions of aliens seemingly aligned with the way we understand this arcane phenomenon to work? Are filmmakers secretly fed information from operators within the government? Are they unconsciously channeling from some unknown, extraterrestrial source? Hello, welcome back to Aquarium Drunkard Transmissions. On Saturday, April 20th, Aquarium Drunkard Transmissions returned to the esoteric grounds of the Philosophical Research Society in Los Angeles for a living taping with guest host Will Sheff (Okkervil River) in conversation author Sean Howe, discussing Agents of Chaos: Thomas King Forçade, High Times, and the Paranoid End of the 1970s, book on High Times founder, provocateur, and trickster Thomas King Forçade as part of PRS' Earth Day celebration Plantstock. I am such a big fan of PRS, where we recorded a live talk with Matt Marble on the esoteric influences of Arthur Russell last fall. It's a place that invites inquiry, rewards curiosity, and enjoys the beauty of the unknown. Which makes it a perfect setting for this talk. Howe's Agents of Chaos is a time machine that transports the reader directly to the chaotic, funky-smelling center of the paranoid 1970s. The result of almost a decade of sleuthing, Howe's fascinating book details the true story of Thomas King Forçade, mysterious founder of High Times Magazine, cannabis kingpin, el supremo of the Underground Press Syndicate, Yippie agitator, known drug smuggler, and possible CIA spook. This week on Transmissions: Camae Ayewa, better known as Moor Mother. As one-half of the Black Quantum Futurism collective, a creative project she founded with Rasheedah Philips, Ayewa has focused her considerable energies on “the manipulation of space-time in order to see into possible futures, and/or collapse space-time into a desired future in order to bring about that future's reality.” As the front-person of the incendiary jazz punk group Irreversible Entanglements, she's let it rip on a series of albums released by International Anthem & Don Giovanni Records. Last year's Protect Your Light found the band moving to the legendary Impulse! Records. Along the way, she's released records under the Moor Mother banner, like 2021's Black Encyclopedia of the Air and 2022's Jazz Codes. Her latest is The Great Bailout, a record that functions at times like a sonic horror movie, while also possessing tremendous passages of beauty. Joined by guests like Lonnie Holley, Kyle Kidd, and Sistazz of the Nitty Gritty—past Transmissions guest Angel Bat Dawid delivers an absolutely breathtaking clarinet solo out ‘South Sea”—the album finds Moor Mother transmuting jazz, noise, rock, folk, gospel, classical music—melting down genres in a poetic churn. Moor Mother plays history and time like a science fiction story, bending temporal moments in a psychedelic flurry. This conversation flows in similar way. Join us to jump through timelines, ponder the Mandela Effect, and untangle histories with Moor Mother on Transmissions. This week on Transmissions, author, producer, archivist, and musician Pat Thomas. In the late '80s, he helped take the Paisley Underground overground with his label Heyday Records. Later, he helped bring out reissues by artists like Judee Sill, Sandy Bull, PiL, and more. And as if all that wasn't enough, he's the author of a number of essential counterculture histories, including 2012's Listen, Whitey! The Sights & Sounds of Black Power 1965–1975, 2017's Did It! Jerry Rubin: An American Revolutionary, and most recently, 2023's Material Wealth: Mining the Personal Archive of Allen Ginsberg. As you'll hear at the top of this episode, he was also the first guest we ever asked to be on Transmissions, only host Jason P. Woodbury hadn't quite got the hang of properly recording interviews. While that ill-fated talk was lost to time, this one isn't. Tune in for more on Ginsberg, the forthcoming Judee Sill documentary Lost Angel, and much more on this all new episode of Transmissions. This week on Black Hoodie Alchemy, I'm joined by the wonderful and well-studied Hermeticist, Ashley Ryan AKA Pythian Priestess of tiktok (witchtok to be specific) and her investigative occult podcast, The Occult Unveiled, which you can find on all platforms. While tiktok is not usually on this podcast's radar, it's worth noting a bit since our guest has nearly half a million followers, and she is a refreshing example of a genuine person, putting out authentic content on tiktok (among other places), and it goes to show that you should never judge a book by its social media platform! As for more serious matters, Ashley is an intriguing esoteric student, living in Los Angeles, doing consistent volunteer work at Manly P. Halls' Philosophical Research Society and working with a disciplined unnamed Hermetic Order in LA -- all with her tiktok virality and her detailed podcast on top. Of particular note from her own show -- and a topic I bring up in our discussion here -- she's interviewed Manly P. Hall's last living personal student, Ronnie Pontiac, a name I hope to get in contact with in the future. Coming from the LA punk rock scene as a teenager, Ronnie's story about his time with Hall is touching, informative, and we just barely scratch the surface of the entire story. So along with the life and times of the esoteric philosopher Manly P. Welcome back to Transmissions. We're still buzzing from this last weekend, which saw a live taping of Transmissions at The Philosophical Research Society, the Los Angeles campus founded in 1934 by esoteric scholar Manly Palmer Hall, featuring Jason P. Woodbury's talk with Matt Marble, an artist, author, audio producer and director of the American Museum of Paramusicology, best known for his podcasts, including Secret Sound, an exploration of the metaphysical history of American music, and the interview show The Hidden Present. He's the author of Buddhist Bubblegum: Esotericism in the Creative Process of Arthur Russell, and that's what we gathered at PRS to discuss. Hall founded PRS with a dedication “to the ensoulment of all arts, sciences, and crafts,” and we hope you find this talk as ensouling as we did. Special thanks to our friends and PRS, especially Alex McDonald and AV director Sara Alessandrini, who you'll hear us refer to throughout the episode, for their help making this happen. And we want to thank Steve Knutson of Audika Records for getting the word out, and of course a warm thanks to everyone who turned up for the show, both in person and via Zoom, to be a part of this special presentation. Transmissions is a part of the Talkhouse Podcast Network. Visit the Talkhouse for more interviews, fascinating reads, and podcasts. Next week on the show, Maria Elena Silva on her remarkable new album, Dulce. For heads, by heads. Aquarium Drunkard is powered by our patrons. How can you turn a seemingly hopeless situation into a gift? It is possible, according to today's guest Yuan Miao who shares her story of tragedy to triumph by realizing the profound importance of joy. Yuan Miao is a spiritual teacher, gifted in the art of Mudra and Mantra. As a child, Yuan was thought to be mute, but under the guidance of her grandmother, a Tibetan Spiritual Master, she learned the power of mantric voice. Yuan is joined by her translator, Peter Shiao, and Obadiah Harris, President of the Philosophical Research Society. Peter Shiao is the producer of “Phoenix Rising,” a journey into vibration, music, and mantra, in which Yuan shares her magical, healing voice. Peter is a media entrepreneur and film producer. He is currently the founder and CEO of Orb Media Group, which is focused on producing, financing, and marketing films and online games with transformational themes that unite the international and Chinese markets. Peter also chairs the annual US-China Film Summit since 2010. Obadiah Harris, an expert in Eastern and Western esoteric cultures and religions, relates the myth of the phoenix rising from the flame and compares it to Yuan's life after she lost her daughter to leukemia, battled with suicidal thoughts, and rose up to triumphantly share her gifts of sound and mantra with the world. This week on Transmissions, we welcome returning guest Cécile Schott, aka Colleen. Her latest album, Le Jour Et La Nuit Du Réel—the day and night of reality—was tracked using a minimalistic setup, a Moog Grandmother and two delays: a Roland RE-201 Space Echo and a Moogerfooger Analog Delay. But for Schott, this assemblage allows for near infinite synthesis, and a genuine multitude of expression. As the world gets stranger and more difficult to understand, the record wordlessly questions what is real—and the times of day and night when the line between real and imaginary blurs. LIVE TRANSMISSIONS: On September 30th, we're hosting a live taping of Transmissions at Manly P. Hall's Philosophical Research Society with Matt Marble, discussing his fantastic book about Arthur Russell, Buddhist Bubblegum. Get more info and tickets here. Transmissions is a part of the Talkhouse Podcast Network. Visit the Talkhouse for more interviews, fascinating reads, and podcasts. Next week on the show, Matt Marble.
Wisdom is a universal language. Insightful parables are found throughout various cultures in history which offer wisdom about how to live a fuller life, being in harmony with nature, and abiding by universal energies and principles. Gods and Goddesses throughout literature emulate many of these qualities. These stories are based on ancient texts, with an esoteric approach, rather than literal, explains our guest today, Obadiah Harris, Ph.D. (now deceased). Dr. Harris was the President of the Philosophical Research Society, founded by Manly P. Hall, and had combined his skills as a community educator and administrator with the study of the world's wisdom traditions. He explains how these stories and traditions ask us to see the inner meaning. He explains how esotericism is an attempt to release the individual from a literal hold. Esoteric movements today are moving away from literalism. People are searching for answers and looking for what works. If we look within, we can explore and find our own truth. Dr. Harris received his Ph.D. in Education from the University of Michigan as a Stewart Mott Foundation Fellow. His work in community education includes service as Associate Professor and Director of the Center for Community Education at New Mexico State University, and as Associate Professor and Director of the Regional Center for Community Education at Arizona State University. Dr. Harris's study and practice of the great Eastern and Western traditions has helped shape and direct his life. Info: www.prs.org.

The band also just released a glowing new album, Perennial, which finds the band in a gentle, rambling mode. Jarvis and host Jason P. Woodbury, alongside Willian Tyler and Sadie Sartini Garner, were all members of a book club through much of the pandemic, reading selections of authors like JG Ballard, Kiese Laymon, Eve Babitz and others. LIVE TRANSMISSIONS: On September 30th, we're hosting a live taping of Transmissions at Manly P. This week, I'm thrilled to bring back my friend Dr. Sabina Stent. A freelance writer & speaker from Birmingham, UK, who specializes in women artists, surrealism, & visual culture, Sabina's interests include the feminist surrealist avant-garde, artists' lives & legacies, cinematic subversion, historical true crime, & surrealism in Los Angeles. She has lectured online & in person for the Philosophical Research Society, Morbid Anatomy Museum, The Last Tuesday Society, & The London Drawing Group. Her bylines include Magnum Photos, Crime Reads, & AnOtherMagazine. Additionally, Sabina has contributed chapters to academic textbooks, & written liner notes essays for Blu-rary releases from the film distributors Indicator & Vinegar Syndrome. And she is also the author of the substack newsletter Love Letters During a Nightmare. Here Sabina Stent joins me to discuss a knockout quartet of heist movies in Watch With Jen's first episode on the crime subgenre since our very first season when Nikki Dolson & I took it on. In this great conversation, we open by championing our underseen 2018 favorite AMERICAN ANIMALS & then go back in time in time to take a look at the rest of our films in reverse chronological order, including THE BLING RING, OCEAN'S ELEVEN, & RESERVOIR DOGS. From the way that even the most perfect plans seem to go awry when you're dealing with variables you can't control in real life to acknowledging that these films seem to thrive thanks to the magical alchemy of outstanding ensembles, original screenplays, & visionary directors, fans of heist movies will cherish our return to the scenes of their favorite cinematic crimes.
