In the brokenness of our times, how might questioning our performance of love tickle pathways for new worlds to open? What fresh forms of connections can blossom when we collapse the hierarchy of loving into a mycelial network of loving? How might the steady cultivation of our individuated lexicon of love strengthen communal bonds? This is a devotional episode dedicated to the Empress of the Solar System, Beloved Venus, through the lens of their journey in Aquarius. To celebrate the last week of Venus's current transit in Aquarius (ps we have not one but TWO trips of Venus moving through Aquarius), I'm recording a contemplation of Venus's journey through the land of fixed air. Join me for my guest workshop inspired by Venus in Aquarius, VISIONARY OF LOVE, hosted by the incredible Kelsey Rose Tortorice. Read more about it here. The workshop is on Friday, March 8, 2024 at 4-6 PM EST / 1-3 PM PST. If you can't make it live, replay will be available! In this contemplation, I discussed the idea of harmonizing everyday personal acts of love with the Field of Love, war as a product of distorted love, rooting beauty standards in the vulnerability of True Love, and Love as the bedfellow of Mystery. In this episode, we grabbed a handful of the books found on the top shelf that people look at but don't always recognize for what they are. From Agrippa to Yeats to the Orphic Hymns - there lies a treasure trove of esoteric knowledge. The shiny books may be the first ones you read but don't deny yourself the wonder that lies beyond the entry level. Not quite bibliomancy as we weren't seeking answers to inquiry; rather, we read through a few passages at random just to demonstrate the sheer amount of information the classic works contain. The episode would not be complete without the requisite contribution from Bella in the form of artistic snoring interspersed with her usual timing and accuracy. We hope you enjoy it!

If it wasn't for Long Covid and personal tragedy, Kristin Mathis may have never left her job as a Waldorf school teacher. She might not have listened when Hermes came to her in a dream. And she may never have launched her Substack, Mysteria Mundi. Kristin has been translating ancient texts her whole adult life — but since leaving University, it had become mostly Sappho's poetry, and mostly something she did just for fun. This was different. This was a calling to Orphic Initiation. And the Universe was conspiring by taking away all the obstacles — health, partner, job security. There were days, weeks, months, when literally all she could do was translate. During these periods when she was too ill or sad to leave bed, she still found time and energy to pour herself into her work. One by one, in an order that would come to her in waking visions and dreams, she started translating the collection of 87 Orphic poems from Ancient Greek to living English texts. More than an obsession, it became a practice. And without ever consciously making the decision, she reprised the role of fulltime scholar she left behind over 30 years ago when she dropped out of her PhD program at Princeton. Today her translation project, Mysteria Mundi, has attracted a devoted audience that helps her pay her bills. It's morphed into classes, collaborations, and speaking gigs at conferences. And it's gotten her a publisher. Revolore Press will soon release a selection of her translations as a book of devotional hymns. I recently sat down with Kristin in her Brooklyn home to discuss Karma, Fate, Moira & Long Covid — a topic and title that came to her after one of our more casual Instagram Live conversations. In this talktalktalk, Kristin discusses fate and fortune as well as the realities of living with Long Covid and some practical insights for anyone facing similar struggles. In this episode, the esoteric scholar Ronnie Pontiac returns to talk about his latest book: The Magic of the Orphic Hymns: A New Translation for the Modern Mystic.Co-authored by Tamra Lucid, his wife, this brilliant collaboration takes the reader on a winding journey through history, striking a perfect balance between dense scholarship and poetic musing. Reading this book feels like uncorking a dusty bottle of ancient spirits. The history is allowed to breathe, inviting you to swirl things around and develop your own taste for the mysteries of Orpheus. Tamra and Ronnie present the Orphic Hymns as being much more than beautiful relics. The hymns are magical, invoking the past as the eternal present and inspiring a prismatic vision of the divine. Many decades of research and experiments inspired The Magic of the Orphic Hymns. In their early 20's, Tamra and Ronnie were mentored by the legendary, Manly P. Hall. And when they were asked to help him with a republication of the Orphic Hymns, they fell in love with these ancient rituals. Ronnie Pontiac discusses his new book, The Magic of the Orphic Hymns: A New Translation for the Modern Mystic. Tamra Lucid and Ronnie Pontiac present new literary translations of the Orphic Hymns that reveal their power to attune the reader to the sacred presence of the Orphic Mysteries and the higher order of nature. These translations restore important esoteric details and correspondences about the being or deity to which each hymn is addressed, offering a deeper understanding of these ancient texts. The famous philosopher Marsilio Ficino once wrote that the Orphic Hymns were the most powerful form of magic. These hymns were not just poems but were used for meditation, rituals, and ceremonies. Each hymn was dedicated to a specific deity or virtue, like Athena, Zeus, Love, Justice, or Equality. However, the original hymns were written formulaically, which made them difficult to translate. Tamra Lucid and Ronnie Pontiac have brought back the magical essence of the mystery cults of the past through their new versions of the teletai. They have included important hidden details and correspondences about the being or deity to which each hymn is addressed. They have also added a new version of a lost hymn called "Number" and messages that were inscribed on golden leaves meant to be passports for the dead. These reinventions preserve the original magical intent and mysticism of the teletai. Furthermore, the authors reveal the power of each hymn to attune the reader to the sacred presence of the Orphic Mysteries and the higher order of nature. They also demonstrate how the Orphic Hymns are a book of hours or a calendar of life, covering every event, from birth to death, and guiding us through every experience of human existence as necessary and holy. We talk about The true mission of our souls Who was Orpheus The counter-culture of the Orphic Hymns The Roman Empress Black Julia Marsilio Ficino Black Athena Sator - half goat half human The Underworld True Gods do not sacrifice animals Tamra Lucid, a documentary film producer, including the Emmy-nominated End of the Line: The Women of Standing Rock, is author of Making the Ordinary Extraordinary: My Seven Years in Occult Los Angeles with Manly Palmer Hall. She and Ronnie are founding members of the experimental rock band Lucid Nation. Ronnie Pontiac worked as Manly P. Hall's research assistant, screener, and designated substitute lecturer for seven years. Author of American Metaphysical Religion, he wrote the biographical introduction to Letters to the Sage. He's written for several esoteric journals and has produced award-winning documentaries.

My guest today is Kristin Mathis - truly a multi-talented individual - and we are all so fortunate that she's dedicated herself to the translation of the Orphic Hymns which overlight this conversation about Venus, Aphrodite, and AstroMagic! She's a writer and poet, a teacher and advocate. (You really must read her fascinating bio). But what she's really doing is quietly revolutionizing the English-speaking world's relationship to the Orphic Hymns with her unique perspective as both an academic and a magical practitioner-animist. In this episode, Kristin helps us understand Venus and Aphrodite as The All, helping us to link love and grief, love and rage, love and justice. On Thursday August 15th, 2019 the Hermetic Hour with host Poke Runyon will present a discussion on the ancient "Sibylline Oracles" created, or re-created, in Greco-Roman Alexandria in the first centuries of the common era. These prophetic verses, attributed to the Sibyls, or prophetic priestesses of ancient Greece were actually a hoax, written by Jewish and Christian Gnostics in an attempt to recast the legendary lost prophetic books of ancient Rome to include the Bible and predict Christianity. They were so successful and popular that the early Christian Church approved of them. They were accepted into the Hermetic tradition, along with The Orphic Hymns and the Chaldean Oracles. They became an influence on western magick and Fairy lore. We will refer to Jake Stratton-Kent's summary of the Oracles in "Geosophia" (2010) and Milton Terry's translation 1899. So, if you want to catch up on this often forgotten aspect of western magical lore, tune in and we'll lift the veil.

Andrieh Vitimus and Zachary Lui are joined by Sara L. Mastros to discuss her inspired translations of the Orphic Hymns. These hymns are essential devotional texts for modern worshippers of the Greek gods, and Mastros' translations are beautiful and accessible. The book also contains fascinating historical and social commentary on the hymns from a modern, feminist, pagan viewpoint. In addition, there are spells and devotional practices for modern worshippers of the Greek gods, as well as brilliant “color your own” ikons. This is a must-have book for anyone interested in the Orphic Hymns or in modern pagan worship of the Greek gods. ------ Subscribe And Listen To Queen City Curio and Apothecary VideoCast & Deeper Down The Rabbit Hole Podcast Here YT: @ QueenCityCurioandApothecaryVideoCast/ Apple: https://apple.co/3Arnw07 Spotify: https://spoti.fi/3ARgMKj ----- Connect with Queen City Curio and Apothecary & Deeper Down The Rabbit Hole LEARN: Become a Sponsor & gain access to 60+ online workshops and other benefits: https://resultsoverimage.teachable.com/p/tin-sponsor/ SHOP: Candles, Herbs, Tumble Stones, Oils, Tarot Decks, and much more. https://queencitycurio.ca/
Let's Talk About Myths, Baby! Greek & Roman Mythology Retold
In this final episode on the Orphic tradition we look at some weird and wild alternate theogonies, the so-called Orphic gold tablets, and the Orphic hymns. Yes, it's a lot.CW/TW: **this episode includes particularly egregious assault and incest, even for Greek myth** Given it's fiction, and typically involves gods and/or monsters, I'm not as deferential as I would be were I referencing the real thing.Sources/Further reading: Early Greek Myths by Timothy Gantz; Theoi.com; Orphic Tradition and the Birth of the Gods by Dwayne A. Zagreus, Zagreus, Zagreus. What a mess of a story. It's gross, it's weird, it's both an afterthought and supremely important. Welcome to the story of thrice born Dionysus, better known as Zagreus.CW/TW: **this episode includes particularly egregious assault and incest, even for Greek myth** far too many Greek myths involve assault. Please welcome my guest this week, a linguist with a PhD in literature, practitioner of the esoteric arts and author of no less than five books on occult topics, Patrick Dunn. Patrick has been interested in reality's hidden layers from a pretty young age on and received inspiration from the local Carnegie library of his small hometown which somehow ended up having a section on the occult. Patrick went on to study witchcraft, QBLH, chaos magic, the PGM and Hellenic paganism in general and despite of a lot more experience since that first talismanic magic he still considers himself a sceptic which is probably one of the more useful traits when it comes down being an occultist. Of course, we'll focus on Patrick's books, starting with his first one ‘Postmodern Magic: The Art of Magic In The Information Age' which was published quite some time ago but still holds very valid views marking the point when Patrick started to develop his own ideas drifting away from the so-called ‘classical paths' also building the foundations for his later work. As Patrick's second book, ‘Magic Power Language Symbol: A Magician's Exploration of Linguistics' goes into much more detail on the connection between language and ritual, the assumptions of language and concepts, pronunciation issues and possible reactions from unseen worlds, we'll touch upon these ideas as well. On our journey, we'll stop at ‘The Practical Art of Divine Magic: Contemporary & Ancient Techniques of Theurgy' which is Patrick's third major work and we'll discuss (one possible) definition of theurgy as well as the role of the rise of Alexandria in the relevant historical period in context with the evolution of magical/religious belief systems. Patrick will kindly give a personal account of how book five, ‘The Orphic Hymns: A New Translation for the Occult Practitioner' was born out of necessity and was actually followed by an unforeseen revival of interest in the Orphic Hymns in general. We'll proceed in our conversation with a fascinating comparison between the Lenormand and the Tarot which is part of Patrick's fourth book, ‘Cartomancy with the Lenormand and the Tarot: Create Meaning & Gain Insight from the Cards' and again, we'll gain a lot of information on how and why this book was born out of a certain need and shed some light on the major differences between the two reading systems. In the end, Patrick will talk about his brand new – almost finished – project of a new book which he'd love to call ‘Magic without BS' although the title might be a subject of concern. It will present basic exercises and deconstruct pitfalls to provide a brief guide of various magical topics without sugarcoating anything. Please welcome this week's guest on the show, Sara Mastros from Pittsburgh who teaches witchcraft, Greek and Near Eastern mythology, Jewish Kabbalah, Pythagorean Mysticism, and practical sorcery online, and at festivals all over the East Coast. Sara grew up in the Amish part of Pennsylvania although not Amish herself within a family that merged Greek and Jewish cultural backgrounds. Magic was not exactly taboo but it seemed that some family members hoped Sara would eventually grow out of this ‘episode' which she was interested in from early age on. At age eight she ordered two books on witchcraft from a catalogue, namely ‘Buckland's Complete Book of Witchcraft' and ‘Encyclopedia of White Magic' by Paddy Slade. Those were the starting points of further explorations into the practice of witchcraft and magic which lead Sara to university libraries and further to the discovery of different grimoires. In the early 2000s, Sara began to work with the Greek Magical Papyri and then with the Orphic Hymns where some doubts arose on the accuracy of previous translations. Eager to understand the material in depth Sara went on to teaching herself Greek because this was the only way to satisfy her need for historical accuracy as well as for gaining the ability to dive deep into the material in terms of magical workings. The result was the publishing of the highly appraised ‘Orphic Hymns Grimoire' where Sara strives for accuracy in translation but at the same time takes the nature of the respective god/goddess into account. In this episode, we'll be talking about the definition of a witch, different categories of magic/witchcraft, and how the translation of words and practice from the distant past creates tension and ways to deal with it. Sara's teaching work will be also a subject along with some good advice for beginners and an outlook on her upcoming book project, ‘The Big Book of Magical Incense' which already open for pre-order. You can hire Sara's services and follow her personal blog at https://www.mastroszealot.com Music played in this episode This is the return of wonderful Heather Dale, who has been with us presenting her music already. On Thursday August 15th,2019 the Hermetic Hour with host Poke Runyon will present a discussion on the ancient "Sibylline Oracles" created, or re-created,in Greco-Roman Alexandria in the first centuries of the common era.
On Thursday September 25th, 2014 the Hermetic Hour with host Poke Runyon will present a discussion of The Orphic Hymns which are the Western Esoteric Tradition's oldest liturgy. These hymns to the planets, the gods and goddesses, the stars and all aspects of ancient Greek mythology were used by the Orphic sect before the Golden Age of Greece, in the days of Pythagoras, to guide the dead souls on their spiritual journey up through the celestial spheres and into the realm of the zodiac and beyond. This was a special and separate aspect of Greek mysticism which had its influence on Pythagoras`, the Gnostics, the Mythraites, and the Italian Renaissance Hermetics. Most recently Christopher Warnock has included the hymns in his "Planetary Magick." We will concentrate on the 18th century Thomas Taylor translation -- which we use -- and read a Robert Graves poem combining a number of Orphic memorials into a connected instruction which may have played some part in the Elusinian Mysteries. So. if you want to know what that strange stuff they sing to harp music accompaniment at the beginning of Seasonals, then tune in and we'll take you back three thousand years.
As we took our camps down at Wellspring 2019, Rev. Avende took a moment to interview Sara Mastros, who has an upcoming book, "The Orphic Hymns Grimoire." The interview is fabulous and well worth listening to: we learned a lot just from asking the questions! Check out her site and (pre)order her book! You can also follow the project on Facebook. You can catch up with Sara: July 27 - Hills & Rivers Fest in Bethlehem PA Oct. 6 - Greater Pittsburgh Pagan Pride Nov. 15-17 - Changing Times, Changing Worlds, Ellenville, NY Apr. 9-12 - Sacred Space / Between the Worlds joint conference. Hunt Valley, MD. She also offers this hymn to Hermes: I sing of High Hermes, beloved worker of wonder,First of the Pleiades conceived while she dreamed of bright Thunder.All-powerful game-master, lord of the dead, true-thinking foreteller of what lies ahead,Code-cracking con-artist, jail-breaking the shibboleth, killed peacock-eyed Argos when you bored him to death.Winged-sandaled human-friend, fast philanthropic prophet, rejoicing in racers and instructing pick-pockets.You spin hermeneutics like you’re spitting hot rhymes,You’re the father of fraud, rearing up lies. But that same trickster offers genuine peace,Blameless, irreproachable machine of surcease.Corycian luckbringer, blessed loquacious one,Comrade of the worker and those under the gun,Employing clever rhetoric, venerable friend,Pray for your initiates when our lifetimes end:Boast about our work and our charismatic rhymes,Memorialize our memories for future lifetimes. Happy Samhain everybody! Let the party season begin! Thank you so much for downloading the show, we hope that you like it! We have recieved alot of email regarding Sparrow's desire to become a doula, she shares a few of them with you this evening. We end the show with Mythic Voices, as tonight we hear two Orphic Hymns, one to Pluto and one to Porsephine. No feature album tonight, but we do have some choice songs to play. It wouldn't be a Wigglian Samhain without hearing from our first two artists, Godsmack and Alice Cooper, so we get the music started with No Rest for the Wicked from Godsmack 4 and Steven from Welcome to my Nightmare. Our second set kicks off with a yet to be finished, Valhalla, and a funky little song from 1969, Black Widow's Come to the Sabbat. We've also found the owner of the Magickfolk CD that was discovered here. Although we forget to mention it during the show, we end the night off with Magickfolk's Angel. Podkin Love! Have a safe and happy Samhain! Thanks for everything you do for us, it's been another great turn of the wheel!
