In this episode, I welcome back author and scholar Peter Mark Adams for a rich and far-reaching conversation centred on his upcoming book from Theion Publishing "Ritual & Epiphany in the Mysteries of Mithras – The Secret Cult of Saturn in Imperial Rome" an extraordinary and deeply thoughtful study of the cult of Mithras. Peter takes us through the ancient layers beneath Mithraic practice — its origins, iconography, cosmology, and initiatory structure — tracing a lineage from early Mesopotamian myths such as the Epic of Gilgamesh, through the cultic worship of Saturn, and into the esoteric heart of Imperial Rome. What emerges from his research is a profound view of Mithraism not simply as a Roman mystery cult, but as the survival of a much older, animistic, star-oriented cosmology. It is a vision of reality structured around spirit, fate, celestial forces, and the metamorphosis of the human soul.Peter takes us through the complex ideas behind his thesis weaving in insights from recent advances in anthropology, ethnography, and comparative religion. He draws particularly from the Orphic mysteries to illuminate the metaphysical architecture underpinning the Mithraic rites. We unpack how the mysteries functioned as both a lived, embodied practice and a carefully guarded initiatic system, intended to bring about deep spiritual transformations in their adherents. The conversation explores the mythic grammar encoded in the Tauroctony — the slaying of the bull — not as a static religious image but as a dynamic, performative act tied to the movement of the heavens and the soul's journey through the stars. In the Plus show, Peter also shares fascinating insights into the seven grades of Mithraic initiation, each representing different spiritual and cosmic stations, and the curious fact that while the cult is famous for these grades, only two formal initiation rituals are known. We delve into the frescoes at St. Capua Vetere, rare depictions that provide intimate glimpses into the ritual life of Mithraic initiates, and discuss how sacred art served not merely as decoration but as an active, living technology for transformation.Along the way, we touch on the challenges faced by modern researchers and practitioners in articulating and re-contextualising these ancient experiences in a world that has largely lost the language for mystery. We talk about the difficulty of bridging the gap between ancient participatory worldviews and the post-Enlightenment skepticism that dominates contemporary thought — and how, paradoxically, the sciences of anthropology and archaeology often come closest to glimpsing the ancient mysteries, even as they struggle to fully comprehend them.Show notes:Peter's site https://petermarkadams.comPeter's instagram https://www.instagram.com/petermarkadams/Peter's Patreon https://www.patreon.com/c/petermarkadams/postsTheion Publishing https://theionpublishing.com/shop/pma-ritualepiphany/?fbclid=IwY2xjawJt5h9leHRuA2FlbQIxMAABHrcrTB0SZCnZKoBiV8ekJtAVHGQawQVzitb5lGAscZwhU94lYmX-PLrQDWW9_aem_NJX2uq5lcQtsID72NJrHJASola-Busca Workshop, Turin https://www.houseofzophiel.com/sola-busca.htmlCosmic or Orphic egg https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cosmic_eggPhanes https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PhanesTauroctony https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TauroctonySt. Capua Vetere https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Santa_Maria_Capua_VetereEpic of Gilgamesh https://www.britannica.com/topic/Epic-of-GilgameshOrphism https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OrphismMithras https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MithraismHenosis https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HenosisLeontocephaline https://www.mdpi.com/2673-9461/2/2/3Chora https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KhôraApogenesis https://www.iasdurham.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/Hannah_From-Here-to-the-Hereafter-Genesis-and-Apogenesis-in-Ancient-Philosophy-and-Architecture.pdfKeep in touch?https://linktr.ee/darraghmasonMusic by Obliqka https://soundcloud.com/obliqka

In this episode Chris brings us Opinion Scholarship on the ancient Greek god--Dionysus. All due credit to Neal Sendlak of the YouTube show "Gnostic Informant" for much of the historical details presented today. (If you haven't checked out Gnostic Informant, you should!) I discuss the classical myth of Dionysus versus older, secretive myths preserved by the followers of Orpheus. We compare the two traditions and explore the deep historical connections with other myths and archeological evidence to see just how deep the Dionysian rabbit-hole goes. We end by diving deeply into the Orphic myth of the creation of humanity and observing various versions of this same myth which appear all over the world. What does it all mean? Find out here... Enjoy ;)

Welcome to Episode 250 of Lucretius Today. This is a podcast dedicated to the poet Lucretius, who wrote "On The Nature of Things," the most complete presentation of Epicurean philosophy left to us from the ancient world. Each week we walk you through the Epicurean texts, and we discuss how Epicurean philosophy can apply to you today. If you find the Epicurean worldview attractive, we invite you to join us in the study of Epicurus at EpicureanFriends.com, where we have a thread to discuss this and all of our podcast episodes. Today we are continuing to review Cicero's "On the Nature of The Gods," which began with the Epicurean spokesman Velleius defending the Epicurean point of view. This week will continue into Section 37 as Cotta, the Academic Skeptic, continues to attack the Epicurean view of the nature of divinity. XXXVII. ... for you asserted likewise that the form of the Deity is perceptible by the mind, but not by sense; that it is neither solid, nor invariable in number; that it is to be discerned by similitude and transition, and that a constant supply of images is perpetually flowing on from innumerable atoms, on which our minds are intent; so that we from that conclude that divine nature to be happy and everlasting. XXXVIII. What, in the name of those Deities concerning whom we are now disputing, is the meaning of all this? For if they exist only in thought, and have no solidity nor substance, what difference can there be between thinking of a Hippocentaur and thinking of a Deity? Other philosophers call every such conformation of the mind a vain motion; but you term it “the approach and entrance of images into the mind.” Thus, when I imagine that I behold T. Gracchus haranguing the people in the Capitol, and collecting their suffrages concerning M. Octavius, I call that a vain motion of the mind: but you affirm that the images of Gracchus and Octavius are present, which are only conveyed to my mind when they have arrived at the Capitol. The case is the same, you say, in regard to the Deity, with the frequent representation of which the mind is so affected that from thence it may be clearly understood that the Gods are happy and eternal. Let it be granted that there are images by which the mind is affected, yet it is only a certain form that occurs; and why must that form be pronounced happy? why eternal? But what are those images you talk of, or whence do they proceed? This loose manner of arguing is taken from Democritus; but he is reproved by many people for it; nor can you derive any conclusions from it: the whole system is weak and imperfect. For what can be more improbable than that the images of Homer, Archilochus, Romulus, Numa, Pythagoras, and Plato should come into my mind, and yet not in the form in which they existed? How, therefore, can they be those persons? And whose images are they? Aristotle tells us that there never was such a person as Orpheus the poet; and it is said that the verse called Orphic verse was the invention of Cercops, a Pythagorean; yet Orpheus, that is to say, the image of him, as you will have it, often runs in my head. What is the reason that I entertain one idea of the figure of the same person, and you another? Why do we image to ourselves such things as never had any existence, and which never can have, such as Scyllas and Chimæras? Why do we frame ideas of men, countries, and cities which we never saw? How is it that the very first moment that I choose I can form representations of them in my mind? How is it that they come to me, even in my sleep, without being called or sought after? XXXIX. The whole affair, Velleius, is ridiculous. You do not impose images on our eyes only, but on our minds. Such is the privilege which you have assumed of talking nonsense with impunity. But there is, you say, a transition of images flowing on in great crowds in such a way that out of many some one at least must be perceived! I should be ashamed of my incapacity to understand this if you, who assert it, could comprehend it yourselves; for how do you prove that these images are continued in uninterrupted motion? Or, if uninterrupted, still how do you prove them to be eternal? There is a constant supply, you say, of innumerable atoms. But must they, for that reason, be all eternal? To elude this, you have recourse to equilibration (for so, with your leave, I will call your Ἰσονομία), and say that as there is a sort of nature mortal, so there must also be a sort which is immortal. By the same rule, as there are men mortal, there are men immortal; and as some arise from the earth, some must arise from the water also; and as there are causes which destroy, there must likewise be causes which preserve. Be it as you say; but let those causes preserve which have existence themselves. I cannot conceive these your Gods to have any. But how does all this face of things arise from atomic corpuscles? Were there any such atoms (as there are not), they might perhaps impel one another, and be jumbled together in their motion; but they could never be able to impart form, or figure, or color, or animation, so that you by no means demonstrate the immortality of your Deity.

Kabbalah is much more than ancient Jewish mysticism; it's a complex tapestry woven from threads of Orphic mythology, Gnosticism, and Platonic philosophies. Join us as our distinguished guest, a leading expert in Judaism and Kabbalah, reveals the profound and sometimes unsettling intersections of these traditions. Discover how Jewish scholars like Philo of Alexandria integrated these diverse influences into concepts such as Tohu Bohu and Tikkun Olam, and uncover the esoteric symbolism hidden on the U.S. dollar bill that links Kabbalistic and Greek traditions.Throughout the episode, we delve into the intricate connections between Kabbalah and Neo-Platonic philosophy, particularly the doctrine of emanation from the divine Ein Sof through the Tree of Life's Sephirot. Learn how Kabbalists interpret allegorical tales like Jacob's Ladder as a journey of spiritual ascent and descent, aiming for an ecstatic reunion with the divine source. Our exploration also touches on the Masonic roots of the imagery on the American dollar and its ties to Jewish mysticism, unveiling a quest for ultimate unity in the universe. In the latter part of our discussion, we turn to the innovations of Isaac Luria, who harmonized Genesis' chaos with Greek primordial matter concepts, and introduced the notion of divine sparks and the hidden Sephirah, Dayat. These teachings propose that Jews, seen as divine sparks, can ascend through Torah study, while Gentiles are depicted as embodiments of darkness. We conclude with a critical examination of how Kabbalistic beliefs outline a cosmic order maintained by continuous Torah study, positioning Jews as pivotal in the creation of a world to come. Have you ever wondered what is meant by the phrase "mystery religions"? Ever wonder, just what the hell this "mystery" is? Are you frustrated by the deafening silence of the ancient writers on this subject? Titillated by the hints left by Plato and the pre-Socratics? Yeah, you're not alone. While the mysteries of Eleusis and the cults of Mithras and Isis may remain in the shadows, the mysteries of Orpheus have been cracked wide open! Like the Rosetta Stone of the Orphic-Dionysian mysteries, an ancient papyrus has been found, which spills the proverbial beans. Join me in exploring the Derveni Papyrus. Enjoy ;)

And you thought Harry Potter knew the language of magic! Manu instructs the sought-after course -- Greek for Mystics -- at LA's premiere mystery school, 22 Teachings (@22teachings). Manuel believes in the power of language to unlock divine connections, guiding others to deeper understanding and spiritual discovery. Manu shares how the magical languages of ancient Greece and Latin are embedded in our western traditions. Fascinatingly, this is the language of the Greek Gods, and the Ptolomeic Greco-Egyptians. Manu shares how anyone can speak Greek or Latin and understand these deeply ancient languages and use them every day. His course analyzes an Orphic hymn, a vital component of the Hellenistic mystical tradition. The hymn written to Athena -- goddess of knowledge and warfare -- reveals how symbols and philosophy are embedded in nearly every aspect of Greek thought and metaphysical life and in our own language today. Manu shares with Diana and Lexi just how these ancient languages are the underlying basis for every aspect of magic. He shares how without realizing it, by speaking and understanding Latin and Greek, magic unfolds. The same is true of own language. The power is in the words and in the way they are spoken, this linguistic scholar explains. Stay tuned for Part 2 of THE LANGUAGE OF THE GODS with Manuel Casanueva on THE SOULFAM PODCAST with Diana and Lexi. In this episode we read the surviving fragments of the philosophy of Empedocles and explore the shamanistic and mystical foundations of Western thought. Empedocles carries on the Orphic and Pythagorean tradition in his quest for Ultimate Reality, for which Aristotle grants him the title of 'Natural Philosopher'. But a strange kind of natural philosopher indeed! He speaks of the union of opposites, of the thing that is paradoxically One and Many; he understands it to be eternal and uncreated; the source of the cosmos, the gods and men. And where did this information come from? From logic, rationality, deduction? Not a bit. It came directly from the divine, from the Great Goddess herself. Enjoy ;)
If it wasn't for Long Covid and personal tragedy, Kristin Mathis may have never left her job as a Waldorf school teacher. She might not have listened when Hermes came to her in a dream. And she may never have launched her Substack, Mysteria Mundi. Kristin has been translating ancient texts her whole adult life — but since leaving University, it had become mostly Sappho's poetry, and mostly something she did just for fun. This was different. This was a calling to Orphic Initiation. And the Universe was conspiring by taking away all the obstacles — health, partner, job security. There were days, weeks, months, when literally all she could do was translate. During these periods when she was too ill or sad to leave bed, she still found time and energy to pour herself into her work. One by one, in an order that would come to her in waking visions and dreams, she started translating the collection of 87 Orphic poems from Ancient Greek to living English texts. More than an obsession, it became a practice. And without ever consciously making the decision, she reprised the role of fulltime scholar she left behind over 30 years ago when she dropped out of her PhD program at Princeton. Today her translation project, Mysteria Mundi, has attracted a devoted audience that helps her pay her bills. It's morphed into classes, collaborations, and speaking gigs at conferences. And it's gotten her a publisher. Revolore Press will soon release a selection of her translations as a book of devotional hymns. I recently sat down with Kristin in her Brooklyn home to discuss Karma, Fate, Moira & Long Covid — a topic and title that came to her after one of our more casual Instagram Live conversations. In this episode, the esoteric scholar Ronnie Pontiac returns to talk about his latest book: The Magic of the Orphic Hymns: A New Translation for the Modern Mystic.Co-authored by Tamra Lucid, his wife, this brilliant collaboration takes the reader on a winding journey through history, striking a perfect balance between dense scholarship and poetic musing. And they conclude with their own renditions of the hymns, beautifully distilled with poetic skill and the finesse of musicians. Reading this book feels like uncorking a dusty bottle of ancient spirits. The history is allowed to breathe, inviting you to swirl things around and develop your own taste for the mysteries of Orpheus. Tamra and Ronnie present the Orphic Hymns as being much more than beautiful relics. The hymns are magical, invoking the past as the eternal present and inspiring a prismatic vision of the divine. Many decades of research and experiments inspired The Magic of the Orphic Hymns. In their early 20's, Tamra and Ronnie were mentored by the legendary, Manly P. Hall. And when they were asked to help him with a republication of the Orphic Hymns, they fell in love with these ancient rituals. In this interview, Ronnie and I discuss:How an OG episode of Star Trek inspired Ronnie's first religious experience. Why the Orphic Hymns have been called “the most powerful form of magic.”Personal stories of real magical results from the Orphic hymns. How Aeolian Heart was born from an Orphic ritualHow the magic of the Orphic Hymns gave birth to the RenaissanceThe Orphic Hymns and Marsilio Ficino.Orpheus with a thousand faces: a savior, hero, coward and narcissistOrpheus' underworld journey and its symbolism.Orpheus' legacy and impact on written history. How Orpheus has always been countercultural How Orpheus inspired Christianity What Orphic initiates believed about death and the after-life.Why the phrase: “I am the child of earth and starry-heaven” is the password to eternity.Enjoy! The legendary teletai of Orpheus were not simply "hymns"--they were initiatic poems for meditation and ritual, magical, and ceremonial use, each one addressed to a specific diety or virtue. In The Magic of the Orphic Hymns, Tamra Lucid and Ronnie Pontiac recapture the magical vitality of the teletai that inspired mystery cults, Western esotericism, art, music and countercultures throughout Western history. Ronnie joins us in this interview to provide a survey of the historical landscape of origin and evolution of the archetypical myth of Orpheus. Tamra Lucid has produced documentary films including the Emmy nominated End of the Line: The Women of Standing Rock, and is the author of Making the Ordinary Extraordinary. (See EOTR Podcast episode 208). She is the former writer and art editor for Newtopia Magazine and her work has appeared in Reality Sandwich. She and Ronnie are also founding members of the experimental (and riotous) rock band Lucid Nation. Ronnie Pontiac worked for many years as Manly P. Hall's research assistant, screener, and designated substitute lecturer. Author of American Metaphysical Religion (See EOTR Podcast episode 251), he wrote the biographical introduction to Letters to the Sage: Selected Correspondence of Thomas Moore Johnson: Volume Two: Alexander Wilder, the Platonist. He's currently working on several other books, including one on Rosicrucianism, and has written for several esoteric journals, and has produced award winning documentaries. Feminists have long held that God must be a woman, particularly because many of our ancestors lived in matriarchal communities. The atheistic non-faith of progressive activists suggests, with sacrilegious intention, that God is either dead or a combination of both male and female, i.e., androgynous. Traditionalists say God is a man. All of these views fundamentally misunderstand the nature of the universal hermaphrodite, however, believing that IT is something of gender or sex. God could not be anything further from this delusional perversion of the esoteric. By male and female it is to be understood that God is THE ALL. Creation is thus the separation of ONE into MANY. When these ideas leave philosophy they can be used by zealots to horrid ends. Recently the Archbishop of York said that we should stop using the word ‘father' to refer to God, something liberal feminists agreed with, stating: “because Jesus called God ‘daddy', we think we have to call God ‘daddy'.” In contrast, conservative Christians criticised the Archbishop for taking his “cue from culture rather than scripture”. Both are incorrect. The fact is that we call God what is familiar to us and if we have poor relationships with women or men we refer to God as the opposite. It is no different than calling the ocean ‘she' or a car ‘her'. God's identity is largely determined today by tribal notions rather than universal notions of nature. The Jewish God is the best example of a deity with human attributes and emotional outbursts. God is MANY from ONE, and therefore GOD is HE, SHE, and IT, all at the same time, and yet none of these things likewise. God is only a hermaphrodite when men and women copulate as in the Yin-Yang or Yab-Yum.This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/5328407/advertisement
On this week's show we cut straight to the bleeding heart of The Lovers of the Tarot and dissect the matrimonial twins to understand the deeper meaning of the card, its etymological rabbit holes, the Orphic egg, what it means in divination, what is had to do with love, ceremonial magick, its abundant use of traditional Christian symbolism and where it all fits on the Kabbalistic Tree of Life. In the extended show we unveil the cards' deeper themes by exploring the references to Grecco-Roman mythology with Castor and Pollux, the twin-faced Janus and its zodiacal association with Gemini. As usual we find ourselves geeking out on the card's exceedingly clever use of gematria, its Hebrew letter association of Zayin and its roots in Egyptian Hieroglyphs. Interview begins @ 4:43 The Red Book, also known as Liber Novus, is a manuscript created by Carl Jung between 1914 and 1930. It is a highly personal and symbolic work that documents Jung's exploration of his own psyche through active imagination and dream analysis. The book contains a wealth of material, including paintings and calligraphy, that Jung created as part of his self-exploration, and it is considered to be one of the most important works of Jung's career. The Red Book was not published during Jung's lifetime, but it was eventually edited and published posthumously in 2009. In this episode, Dr. Murray Stein and John discuss the impact of Liber Novus on the study of depth psychology and religion. We begin by exploring the anthology, Jung's Red Book for Our Time: Searching for Soul under Postmodern Conditions, created and edited by today's participant, Dr. Stein, and physicist, Dr. Thomas Arzt, who organized over seventy essays contributed to the process by various writers in the community of analytical psychology. We continue with the nature of Jung's suffering expressed through the process of active imagination, we discuss what Liber Novus has done for the Jungian field, and we continue by identifying the practice of active imagination as the key method for self-knowledge, psychedelics and the unconscious, the ethical obligation following an encounter with the unconscious – whether through dream work, active imagination, psychedelics, incubation, or any other ecstatic experience - depth psychology, the rational and irrational, alchemy and the unconscious, Dr. Stein explains the process of active imagination, mysteries traditions, Orphic tradition, subtle bodies and synchronicity, the encounter with Soul, and integrating the inferior function. Bio: Dr. Stein is a graduate of Yale University (B.A. and M.Div.), the University of Chicago (Ph.D.), and the C.G. Jung Institute-Zurich (Diploma). He is a founding member of the Inter-Regional Society of Jungian Analysts and of the Chicago Society of Jungian Analysts.
