Episode 53. Andy Rice. Hard Work & Hard Lessons in Booking Hardcore Bands. Most of the bands that would come to rise in the era at the outset of This Is Hardcore Fest, Sound & Fury and United Blood are bands that would or have been booked by Andy Rice. His story is much like so many others on the show. Self taught from touring in previous bands, lead him to be able to become one of the busiest and successful booking agents from 04 onward. His story and principles on how to work within our world is focused here. There is still so much to go on with Andy beyond what we captured in these 2 hours, but Andy is someone who is not only a friend of mine, but has done so much to keep the ball rolling for so many hardcore bands. He comes at this from a very strong will backed with blue collar approach and has alot of ethics that separated him from so many of his peers. Opening Track of the Episode Z9! Episode 17 Juice E Joel Murphy... Welcome To Memphis This Is Hardcore Fest would look much different if not for Juice/Joel Murphy and his creative talents. From the first day I met him almost 20 years ago, we became instant best friends and the rest was history. Juicy Joel was the singer of Clenched Fist, Memphis's finest and one of the only Memphis bands at the time. In fact, they were probably one of the only bands in that part of the South at the time that took its inspiration from the grittier east coast influences of Agnostic Front, Biohazard and Madball. After a few tours, a Full Length on Thorpe records, Juice and the gang put it to rest for awhile. But that is just where he turned his free time into the self taught web designer/creative artist that he is today. From the very beginning, he worked ingeniously to figure out how to code, build sites and through connections landed his first gig. So much of his story that we talk about is just how if you push forward, stay disciplined, you can learn just about anything, including a profitable career without the ghastly weight of a college education to pay off. There is so much in this episode from the Clenched Fist days, to Joel's work regimen and he gives plenty of pointers, tips and history on just how he went about learning and continues to grow his skills without college. This is a must for so many who are beginning or have began their freelancing gig or full on career. Juice is the man behind This Is Hardcore Fest.com, Phillyhcshows.com, TIHCPODCAST.com and also my right hand man from the days leading up to the fest, to the very last table that gets put away each year at the fest. There are some hilarious behind the scenes stories from TIHC that had me laughing for minutes. From back in the day stories, to much needed advice and inspiration from a self taught successful freelancer, to amazing drunken stories of backstage chaos, Juice commands throughout the episode and makes for an exciting, entertaining and insightful listen. clenchedfist.bandcamp.com/ twinturbodesign.com twitter.com/juicyjoel

We talk everything from him growing up in Kensington to the annual This Is Hardcore Fest, in which, in my opinion is the best hardcore festival in the states. We touch on his upbringing and what pointed him in the direction of the hardcore scene, booking shows. An intelligent guy who's an avid reader, BBJ student, modern medieval fighter and singer for Shattered Realm. Much respect to him, Chris "X" Striegel and his team who put together shows constantly in Philly. Thanks again Joe. Respect.

Sunny Singh knows was work is. At this year’s This Is Hardcore Fest, I watched Sunny as he wielded his video camera overhead for long stretches, capturing every single one of the forty bands that performed over the course the three-day fest. Sunny is the Alan Lomax of hardcore punk. For nearly a decade, he has captured and published thousands of hours of footage of punk and hardcore acts through his site hate5six.com, revealing the scope and scale of an artistic form that is constantly in flux. Being a first-generation American, he learned from an early age through the example of his parents, that taking risk does not end after one has crossed the threshold, but has to be worked through continuously with grit and determination. It is through Sunny’s sense of stick-to-itiveness that enabled hate5six to thrive and garner an audience that continues to grow. In this conversation, Sunny and I discuss matters of identity, the changing trends in the punk scene, and whether or not it is still possible to promote political action through music and community.

ON THIS EPISODE A SPECIAL CONVERSATION WITH WALTER SCHREIFELS, CHAKA MALIK, GAVIN VAN VLACK, MARK BEEMER, KEVIN HARE, STEPHEN X WELCH, AND MORE!!     Greetings all, and thanks for joining us for a very special edition of Cinepunx, recorded almost entirely at THIS IS HARDCORE FEST!  This is the first part of our series, the second will post soon. We spoke to so many great people that we needed to break this into a couple episodes. On this episode we start off with an intro, a few folks from the fest, and then an extended conversation mostly with Chaka and Gavin of BURN but with some brief words from Walter Schreifels of GORILLA BISCUITS, QUICKSAND, HANDSOME and many more! As is often the case with our special THIS IS HARDCORE FEST episodes, the audio on this is rough. Your patience is appreciated, and your willingness to put up with all of it is amazing! Thanks to everyone for the overwhelming support we received this weekend. It was powerful and wonderful, and just a reminder of why we do this. Keep your eyes peeled for a second episode soon. Not much in show notes other than that Josh goes on a rant about all these awesome details regarding GREEN ROOM, and before any of you write us yes, we know he got almost all of them wrong. So don’t bother correcting us, we got it covered. THANKS THOUGH!! As usual there are too many people to thank, from the folks at the fest to Freddy Alva, Justin Lore, Wrong Evan, Sean Bennis-Sine, Steven DiLodovico and OG Gavin and all the BSB crew, Grace Kim, The Spina’s, and many many more. Regardless we love you, PLEASE RATE, REVIEW, AND SUBSCRIBE!   The post CINEPUNX Episode 53: THIS IS HARDCORE SPECIAL EPISODE PART 1 appeared first on Cinepunx.

“Like a diamond in a sea of glass…” IS WHAT YOU WILL SAY ABOUT THIS NEW AWESOME EPISODE OF CINEPUNX!!! In this entertainment packed episode we sat down with long time friend of the show and local core-men Carp (Brian but who calls him that?) to discuss THE NEON DEMON and the films of Nicholas Winding-Refn (or rather the films we have seen) FIRST THINGS FIRST, BEFORE WE EVEN GET TO SOUND NOTES, WE ACKNOWLEDGE THAT THE SOUND ON THIS EPISODE IS SUB-PAR AND WE APOLOGIZE FOR THAT! If you are new to the show we assure you that other episodes are of a MUCH higher quality and we encourage you to check them out! However, despite the sound not being ideal the conversation is SPARKLING! Big thanks to Carp for being a part of this awesome episode. We both loved THE NEON DEMON which appears to be a controversial opinion so if you hated it, we would love to hear from you! COMMENT BELOW-     Not too many links we need to mention though we do want to emphasize how much we LOVED and think you should see THE HUNT FOR THE WILDERPEOPLE Josh mentions that two of his bands both have demos out, so check out ONLY GLORY and of course CROSSED KEYS Josh also discussed how the recent two show run of ONLY GLORY was the end of that band, but he was incorrect, because they are playing this month with TOKEN ENTRY in Philly! For more shows be sure to check out PHILLY HARDCORE SHOWS, and definitely head over and get your tickets to THIS IS HARDCORE FEST and the newly announced and very awesome BRUCE CAMPBELL HORROR FILM FEST!! Most of the other things we discuss are easily google-able, so you know, do that. SOUND NOTES: The episode is rough. Two things happened. One was that what we were hearing through the headphones was NOT what was being captured by the laptop. No worries, we will have that fixed asap. The second was that we had a fan on, and when I went back later to digitally remove the fan sound it left us with a hollow and robotic sound, haunted by the electronic ghost of the fan sound. In the end, the fan was even more present in it’s absence. Not really, it was a dull roar before I removed it.   Ok so, THANKS FOR LISTENING, THANKS FOR BEING AWESOME, PLEASE SHARE/SUBSCRIBE/RATE/REVIEW/DOWNLOAD/LIKE   The post CINEPUNX Episode 52:The Films of Nicholas Winding-Refn feat. The band have just signed a deal with Dine Alone Records for the release of the effort, as well as a new EP for their song “Exile“, which will hit stores this weekend.   HOUSECLEANING/LISTENER QUESTION First race of the season is in the books “John and Kyle, Great to hear a new episode guys! My favorite show to date for sure. A question I've had for you guys that I've been wanting to ask for a while is whether or not either of you actually listen to music when putting in miles on the bike? I definitely refrain from plugging in when riding singletrack most importantly due to just being aware of other trail users, but when it comes to gravel or road riding, are tunes a necessary component for your training? Finally, thanks for the tip on Achilles! Super sweet stuff. Take care guys. Grant”   RECORD REVIEW World Be Free – 'The AntiCircle' Released: February 5 2016 – Revelation Records World Be Free's story began in the fall of 2014, when Scott Vogel (Terror, Buried Alive), Joe Garlipp (Envy), Andrew Kline (Strife), and Sammy Siegler (Judge, CIV, Rival Schools) met monthly to write classicinfluenced, melodic and positive hardcore. All of this developed without a label, budget or any mention to the outside world. When Siegler scored some recording time at Hurley, they flew in Arthur Smilios (Gorilla Biscuits, CIV) to cover on bass and hustled into the studio. Vogel and Terror bandmate Nick Jett then tracked vocals at Jett's studio, passing the ball to Walter Schreifels (Rival Schools, Quicksand, Gorilla Biscuits) for one final guest spot. With their album finished and its release fast approaching, Top 5 – Primal Reaction Records. Something about these 5 records speaks to that dark place in your soul. Pure raw aggression and power..   UNBROKEN – Life Love Regret – 1994 New Age Records Life. Love. Regret. is everything that hardcore is. It is the heart, the soul, the sound, and the attitude. The music is loud and in your face, but most importantly, passion is put at the top. This album is a monument by a monolithic band. From the crushing riff and sinister notes at the beginning of "D4" to the ending feedback in the nine minute "Curtain."   Breather Resist – Only In The Morning – March 25, 2003 Deathwish Inc Breather Resist formed in 2002 and recorded 8 songs, 4 of which were on handmade demos. These 8 songs became their first EP, "Only in the Morning", released on Deathwish, Inc.. Their first LP, Charmer, was released on Jade Tree Records in October 2004, having been produced by Kurt Ballou. In December 2005, lead singer Steve Sidoni left the group; Buried Alive – Death Of Your Perfect World – April 20, 1999 Victory Produced by Steve Evetts at Trax East Studios. It is the band's only album with Jesse Muscato on drums.   CURSED – I – February 23, 2005 Deathwish Inc Formed in 2001 a year after the breakup of The Swarm aka Knee Deep in the Dead. Known for their trademark nihilistic and dystopian lyrical themes, stark classic horror imagery and loud, abrasive live shows. Integrity – Those Who Fear Tomorrow – 1991 Overkill Records Integrity's For Those Who Fear Tomorrow is a hardcore juggernaut that has lurked in infamy for over 15 years. Recorded in 1991, For Those Who Fear Tomorrow is often credited as on of the first true metalcore" albums. While hardcore crossover bands like the Cro Mags and Corrosion of Conformity had existed before Integrity, few were prepared for the world Integrity brought to life with their debut album. FTWFT's razor sharp metallic edges, driving hardcore verses, and gloomy breakdowns set a stage for one of hardcore's most messianic and charismatic front men: Dwid Hellion. The album has been issued in close to 10 different editions and formats. It has never received proper distribution or promotion, but it has survived: a truly bastardized child of hardcore, metal, and a darkness of the soul.   BUMPER MUSIC SEGMENTS Intro: Minor Threat   ‘Out Of Step’ News: UNBROKEN ‘D4’ Housekeeping: Breather Resist ‘Just Do It’ Record Review: World Be Free ‘Shake The Ghost’ Primal Records: Cursed ‘1974’ Outro: Integrity ‘Micha those who fear tomorrow’   FIND MBR Mountain Bike Radio Facebook Page Mountain Bike Radio on Twitter Mountain Bike Radio on Instagram Mountain Bike Radio on Pinterest

FIRST OFF, THIS IS EPISODE 47 NOT 49, WHICH WILL MAKE SENSE WHEN YOU LISTEN TO THIS EPISODE!! It was a great pleasure to finally sit down with our friend Joe Hardcore (McKay) who you may know from the giant festival he runs, This Is Hardcore Fest, from the many shows he books in Philadelphia, or from some of the bands he has been in like SHATTERED REALM or PUNISHMENT. Regardless, we have known Joe for 20 years, and he has been an important part of the scene here in Philadelphia for even longer. In fact his first band, LTD played the first hardcore show I ever went to. Unlike a lot of folks, I came to hardcore from punk. When I was a freshman in highschool I was listening mostly to a combination of GREEN DAY, CRASS, THE CIRCLE JERKS, and COCKSPARRER thanks to the many weird punks who also went to Collingswood High School. However, that show at the Firenze which we discuss a tiny bit on the episode started me on a journey to where I am now, and I really appreciate that.         Joe has been harassing us good naturedly for quite some time about not having him on the show, but the timing just never worked out until now. When we contact him about doing this episode, he knew IMMEDIATELY what he wanted to discuss: NINJA MOVIES! Not just any films either, specifically the work of Sho Kosugi, and mutually we decided to focus on perhaps the best of the Canon Films Group’s ninja trilogy, REVENGE OF THE NINJA!! Predictably, we end up ALL OVER THE DAMN PLACE, but in the best way possible. We covered a small part of many Ninja films, including PRAY FOR DEATH, ENTER THE NINJA, NINJA 3: THE DOMINATION, RAGE OF HONOR, and SUPER NINJAS ( 5 ELMENTS NINJA) It is a pretty great conversation! This was the kind of episode where we had so much we could talk about there was no way we could cover it all, so let us know if you wanna hear a part two sometime soon!         We also mentioned a great deal of other films from the work of Takashi Miike to films like THE WITCH, ZOOTOPIA, and KINGDOM OF HEAVEN. SOUND NOTES: Towards the end of the first segment there is a weird buzz in the background. I have no idea why, and it seems to go away in the second segment. Sorry about that, hopefully it doesn’t bother you too much. Other then that episode went great! BIG THANKS TO JOE HARDCORE FOR RECORDING WITH US! BIG THANKS TO ALL OF YOU WHO SUPPORT US, AND TO FOLKS LIKE NICK SPACEK, PHIL SAYNISCH, EVAN VELLELA, SEAN BENNIS-SINE, JUSTIN HARLAN, ETHAN ANDERSON, JUSTIN MILLER, JOSEPH GERVASI, AND ANYONE ELSE WHO HAS POSTED ABOUT US AND SPREAD THE WORD! HUGE UPS TO MAD JOE FROM WISDOM IN CHAINS FOR WEARING OUR SHIRT AT THE JUDGE SHOW, AND TO JUSTIN LORE FOR REPPING US AT MONSTER MANIA!! This episode was a real reminder of how grateful we are to our friends and fans and collaborators who have helped make this thing possible. It is great to be a part of something so awesome. WELCOME CINEPUNX: HAVE WE GOT A SHOW FOR YOU! This week we were lucky enough to sit down with the venerable Johnpaul Golaski, (@johnpaul215 ) stalwart of the Philly punk scene, veteran of the awesome WKDU , creator of Philly Shreds (where I used to go for so much show information) and freelance sound engineer for a number of movies and TV shows Johnpaul is a true Cinepunk in that he is both more punk than either of us, and ACTUALLY involved in creating cinema. So that is pretty amazing. Johnpaul has been involved at the amazing WKDU for 20 years and you can hear his show 1100ccs Of Hate on Sunday nights from 10pm to midnight. He is also a fun and interesting guy to talk to, and we had a wonderful conversation with him. Thanks Johnpaul for being a part of the show, for some sound equipment advice, and for maybe having us over to WKDU sometime (which I have never been to). IMPORTANT LINKS: We didn’t discuss too many specific movies this week, but we did a few. Here are some links to other things discussed: 1. WKDU 2. JOHNPAUL’S SITE 3. PHILLY PUNX PICNIC 4. THIS IS HARDCORE FEST 5. INTERNATIONAL HOUSE PHILLY CALENDAR 6. THE MAHONING DRIVE IN 7. SLEDGEHAMMER (UPON WATCHING THIS I KNOW WHO SLEDGE HAMMER IS NOW) 8. FANDOR 9. PHILLY OUTDOOR MOVIES 10. THE AWESOME FEST SOUND NOTES: This week we owe a HUGE THANK YOU to Len Carmichael of LANDMINE STUDIOS Basically we had some equipment issues. We had to do both the soundboard and the USB mic again, and there were some delay issues which led to a huge echo issue in the second half of the episode. WITHOUT THE HELP OF LANDMINE STUDIOS THIS WHOLE EPISODE WOULD HAVE BEEN SCRAPPED. Basically, through the brilliant sound manipulations of Len, we were able to get our episode back. Thanks man! Support Landmine Studios, Len does great work including the sound for most of the THIS IS HARDCORE FEST, videos done by never-guest Hate5six ,and recording great bands including my good friends One With Nothing. All that to say: throw him your support please. OK, so thanks for checking us out. Please subscribe, rate and review us. HERE WE GO AGAIN, ANOTHER RAUCOUS AND RUDE EPISODE OF CINEPUNX!!! Actually, this episode is neither raucous nor rude, but hopefully it is entertaining. Since this episode was inspired by the release of DOPE, we decided to discuss “Coming of Age” films. There was some discussion of whether DOPE even fairly fits this genre, what we think defines this genre, and some of our favorite and least favorite coming of age films. SHOW NOTES 1. As usual we discuss some things you should have links to like The Mahoning Drive In, the RUBA club, Exhumed Films, This Is Hardcore Fest, Philly Hardcore Shows, The New Horror Business podcast 2. This episode contains light spoilers for a number of classic films but HEAVY spoilers for recent film EX-MACHINA, so if you have not seen it skip all discussion of it 3. FANDOR DID NOT PAY ME TO TALK ABOUT HOW COOL IT IS! However, because of my regular column RUNNING ON STREAM I do have a free subscription, so, you know, full disclosure or whatever… 4. WE DISCUSS DOPE, MOONRISE KINGDOM, SUBMARINE, THE 400 BLOWS, COOLIE HIGH, STAND BY ME, THE SANDLOT, KINGS OF SUMMER, AND KARATE KID. I think those are all the Coming of Age movies we talk about, but not sure. 5. we don’t know what a coming of age movie is BTW, so, you know, take anything we say with a grain of salt. In process I also talk trash on Jacob Berman, but we love you man. 6. SUGAR PROBLEMS!! So, immediately after this episode ended, Josh asked me if I was feeling ok cause I was really “low energy”. Some of you know, but for those of you who do not, I have type 1 diabetes. This effects me in many ways, not least of which is that, if I eat the wrong thing, and my sugar goes high, I get very slow and groggy. When I arrived at Josh’s house to record, he had pizza, and while I should have said no, I said yes. Cause pizza is awesome. Unfortunately, I think it was not my best show because my sugar was out of whack for the entire time and I sounded kind of drunk or tired. Apologies to all and thanks for your patience. 7. Related note: I had to cut literally like 15 “ums” and I know I missed some so apologies for that. Thanks so much for listening! Thanks to everyone who has ordered a shirt as well. Finally, do not forget to rate/review/subscribe in iTunes! This helps us a LOT, and thanks to those who have already done so. SOUND NOTES Nothing to report I don’t think, sounded great to me. Comment below if you hear something off. That is all friends. Thanks and rock on! The post Episode 31: COMING OF AGE FILMS- THE BEST AND THE WORST appeared first on Cinepunx.

Another Friday is here, the work week is over, and Edgeland is in your ear canal. This week on the show Bill talks about the time he witnessed some police brutality, and surprisingly he is on the side of the cops on this one. In the interview portion of the show Bill talks with Joe Hardcore, the man behind This Is Hardcore Fest. Joe talks about being exposed to metal early on, Bad Luck 13 breaking everything, and how kids might be too wimpy these days. In the non edge column Bill talks with stand up comedian Andy Sandford. Conversation topics include skateboarding, stand up comedy, and the parallels between the two. A great episode to help you through the day.

GREETINGS ALL AND WELCOME TO EPISODE 19 OF THE ENIGMATIC CINEPUNX!! FIRST OFF WE WANT TO THANK OUR SEMI-SPONSOR FEDERAL DONUTS!! Basically, we love Federal Donuts! So we asked if we could get free food if we talked about them on the show, and they said yes! Sick! Then I forgot to email them before we recorded. So we actually paid for these donuts. OOOPS!! Anyway, they are still great! This episode we sit down with Jeff Ziga, co-owner/founder of Little Baby’s Ice Cream, and Philly punk personality! Jeff has been in a glut of bands, many of which we discuss on the show like Affirmative Action Jackson, Knives Out, and Armalite. Jeff also worked for This Is Hardcore Fest for 3 years and for R5 Productions for I dunno how long! The episode is kind of all over the place. We start off talking about Jeff’s various bands, and then we move into our usual discussion of Wack and On Track! Then we get into our space movies discussion, which comes from see Interstellar recently and because Josh saw 2001: A Space Odyssey on 70mm. To be fair, we just enjoy each other’s company so much that the discussion ranges all over the place. Liam mentions how parts of Les Miserables makes him cry. Jeff discusses senior week, pot brownies, and Event Horizon. Josh gets into a story about farting in a space simulator. Things get a little crazy. We spend the whole time eating donuts, and then name dropping other brands we want free stuff from including Red Wings and Relapse Records. I think Jeff had a good time. Big surprise, there are some sound issues, and trying to fix them actually made some of them a little worse. Basically we have been playing with the input levels for the mics, trying to cut down on blow out or on echo. In this case, Liam’s mic has an echo issue, and then later all three mics get a little weird. Nothing awful really, but if you are looking for us to crack the sound code, we have not yet done that. In fact, if you have any idea how to help us, please let us know. The issue seems to be either our equipment, which is basically 3 usb mics in a laptop and recording with Kristal; or just poor operating by us. Either way we would love your insight or your affordable sound equipment so we can update our set up. We also mention toward the end of the episode that we are looking for new guests. That is for real, and hit us up to be on!! Big thanks to Jeff for being on the show, if you have not yet had Little Baby’s Ice Cream do your taste buds a favor and get some ASAP! Wait what? Yeah, that’s right, it is EPISODE 16 OF THE CINEPUNX PODCAST!! This is our special Fantastic Fest (link) edition, and Liam basically did what Josh did at THIS IS HARDCORE FEST only was much less successful. That is not to say we did not have some great convos, and big thanks to the 9 people who participated, but it was just not the same scale. NOW, that being said, we did run into an interesting problem because of the number of people involved. You see, because so few people were able to participate, Liam made every conversation longer than had been originally planned. So you will here him claim in the intro that this episode is particularly short. It is not. It is like 2 hours long. The reason is this extended format. Sorry. Now quite a few people expressed frustration they did not get to participate in this episode. First off, anyone who showed up and was willing to get interviewed got interviewed so you got no one to blame but yourself sugar. However, we love interviews and we would love to talk TO YOU! Hit us up on facebook or email us cinepunx (at) gmail. Josh checks it. Right? Sure he does. Almost everyone we were able to talk to also writes about movies, so check out the links next to their name to see their writing. Big thanks again to all of them, listed below in order of appearance. SOUND NOTE: during the interview with the magical WOLFMAN the chord on Liam’s mic fell out before you hear us address it. It just sounds like suddenly you can’t hear Liam very well anymore. Look, it is a minute and it was not gonna work to edit it out. Thanks for your patience far, far in advance, and big thanks to Fantastic Fest for being amazing.
