We are in the deep heat of the summer and it's a perfect time for a coming of age tale set against the backdrop of a high school summer in Ohio. The writing, the acting, and the characters of this film will captivate you and with it's R rating, language wasn't toned down to make it hit that PG-13 summer market. Even as a R, it's not a boner comedy about sex and boobies but just a really fun film. Give it a shot and listen along to how Brett and Pat enjoyed it as well. twitch.tv/epiccouchtime twitch.tv/brettingtonfrothingslosh discord.gg/gdTEUm9p6c

My guests today are gold medal beach volleyball champion Kent Steffes and beach volleyball player and author Travis Mewhirter. I don't care if you have an interest in beach volleyball, if you want to know what a winner's mindset is, then this is a conversation for you. Kent's unique approach to reaching goals, be it sport or business, is worth your time. His deep philosophical approach to executing a strategy is an example of a 1% person of the 1%. He readily admits there is a cost for winning and shares how he navigated that or re-framed it during his career. Kent and Travis's new book KINGS OF SUMMER, a history of men's beach volleyball, is out now. I just wish I knew Kent better 35 years ago to learn just the three things all the great volleyball players do. What did Kent do after he won the gold at 27? Headed to Stanford business school and did a complete pivot at 30. If you want to listen to someone who approaches things in a way most of us don't, tune in. The mighty Kong has traveled a long way since we first saw him batting away aeroplanes atop the Empire State Building to the melodramatic strains of the great Max Steiner. CGI now rules when it comes to Monster Movies, just as Marcel Delgado's model of the giant ape did the New York skyline back in 1933. But some things in cinema never change - including the way music is used to set an identifiable tone for narrative. In the case of Kong: Skull Island, young American director Jordan Vogt-Roberts has sought to introduce the familiar sonic stylings of the Vietnam War to the traditional thrills and spills of the matinee creature feature - with most entertaining results. During the course of his conversation with Edith you'll hear plenty of musical nods to Apocalypse Now and Good Morning Vietnam - and also discover which Rolling Stones track provided the inspiration for Henry Jackman's score. They also reflect upon Jordan's previous film, The Kings Of Summer, with extracts from composer Ryan Miller's wonderful experimental soundscape underlaying the discussion. But the show begins on Skull Island, where Samuel L Jackson and his men go about their business to the pounding beats of Creedence Clearwater Revival, David Bowie and Black Sabbath ...

HERE WE GO AGAIN, ANOTHER RAUCOUS AND RUDE EPISODE OF CINEPUNX!!! Actually, this episode is neither raucous nor rude, but hopefully it is entertaining. Since this episode was inspired by the release of DOPE, we decided to discuss “Coming of Age” films. There was some discussion of whether DOPE even fairly fits this genre, what we think defines this genre, and some of our favorite and least favorite coming of age films. SHOW NOTES 1. As usual we discuss some things you should have links to like The Mahoning Drive In, the RUBA club, Exhumed Films, This Is Hardcore Fest, Philly Hardcore Shows, The New Horror Business podcast 2. This episode contains light spoilers for a number of classic films but HEAVY spoilers for recent film EX-MACHINA, so if you have not seen it skip all discussion of it 3. FANDOR DID NOT PAY ME TO TALK ABOUT HOW COOL IT IS! However, because of my regular column RUNNING ON STREAM I do have a free subscription, so, you know, full disclosure or whatever… 4. WE DISCUSS DOPE, MOONRISE KINGDOM, SUBMARINE, THE 400 BLOWS, COOLIE HIGH, STAND BY ME, THE SANDLOT, KINGS OF SUMMER, AND KARATE KID. I think those are all the Coming of Age movies we talk about, but not sure. 5. we don’t know what a coming of age movie is BTW, so, you know, take anything we say with a grain of salt. In process I also talk trash on Jacob Berman, but we love you man. 6. SUGAR PROBLEMS!! So, immediately after this episode ended, Josh asked me if I was feeling ok cause I was really “low energy”. Some of you know, but for those of you who do not, I have type 1 diabetes. This effects me in many ways, not least of which is that, if I eat the wrong thing, and my sugar goes high, I get very slow and groggy. When I arrived at Josh’s house to record, he had pizza, and while I should have said no, I said yes. Cause pizza is awesome. Unfortunately, I think it was not my best show because my sugar was out of whack for the entire time and I sounded kind of drunk or tired. Apologies to all and thanks for your patience. 7. Related note: I had to cut literally like 15 “ums” and I know I missed some so apologies for that. Thanks so much for listening! Thanks to everyone who has ordered a shirt as well. Finally, do not forget to rate/review/subscribe in iTunes! This helps us a LOT, and thanks to those who have already done so. SOUND NOTES Nothing to report I don’t think, sounded great to me. Comment below if you hear something off. That is all friends. Thanks and rock on! The post Episode 31: COMING OF AGE FILMS- THE BEST AND THE WORST appeared first on Cinepunx.

It was another awful week in Cleveland sports. It was so bad in fact that I don't think Scott or I could even muster up any anger over it. When you get lulled out of anger and into straight depression, it doesn't mean it's any easier. It's just sadder. Anyway, here's the email I sent to Scott on Sunday night before we recorded on Monday morning... ---------------------- I was at the Browns game today. We don't need to spend too much time on that. It's over. The season is over. They'll be favored against the Jags, but I wouldn't bet on the Browns to beat any other NFL team right now.  I'm missing next week's game driving back from thanksgiving. I normally rally the family at 6 AM to leave Indy so we can make it home in time for kickoff. Not doing it for this team. It's the first time that I'm missing a game in a long time and I really don't even care. I don't hate this team but I've never been with less passion in my life.  Jhonny Peralta signed a 4 year deal for more than $50 million. Would Asdrubal get that today if he was working free agency? Plus this is the second straight year that a PED user went and got a deal after a suspension. Melky Cabrera last year.  Taking the anger out with regard to the Cavaliers, what do you do if you're Dan Gilbert? I know he's not a sympathetic figure really, but what do you think he's thinking and feeling right now? Last but not least, I saw a really great movie filmed in Chagrin Falls. The Kings of Summer starred Nick Offerman, Megan Mullally and some great unknown younger actors. While Cleveland / Chagrin Falls wasn't really a character in the film, it still have me pride. Local producer doing good work. Surprisingly funny.  Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
