POPULARITY
Our heroes struggle not to explode when talking about the best ninja movie ever made.
It's January 13th, and there are no movies worthy of celebrating their BIG 4-0's at the 1984 box office, so even though it's only our second episode of the new year/season, we're already doing a bonus episode. Last September we celebrated the BIG 4-0's of DEATHSTALKER and REVENGE OF THE NINJA, the sequel to 1981's ENTER THE NINJA. So, this week we're taking a look at that first NINJA film and DEATHSTALKER's sequel, 1987's DEATHSTALKER II. Please remember to Rate, Like, and Subscribe; and we'll be back next week to celebrate the BIG 4-0's of Steve Martin in THE LONELY GUY and Woody Allen's BROADWAY DANNY ROSE. Corey and Dr. West indulge in the video store cult delicacy that is 'Revenge of the Ninja.'
I'm in a great mood tonight so I'm releasing three of the Cannon Group's films! First is the classic Enter the Ninja which we had so much fun going through that it really shouldn't be allowed. Second is the follow up (although not a sequel), Revenge of the Ninja, which scared the shit out of both Chad and me in the 80's. Still a tremendously good time to watch AND you get Keith Vitali! Bonus! Last for this week is the classic of all classics, American Ninja with Michael Dudikoff and the great Steve James! So buckle in and go for a Cannon ride with us this week! It might just give you an insight into what movie we're recording next!Hey, if you're listening anyway, please subscribe wherever you're getting your podcasts and tell some people who also might enjoy foul-mouthed, ass-kicking movie talk throughs! We'd be in your debt...and you know what THAT means in martial arts movies.More episodes coming next week and new episodes being released as soon as we get a few more recorded!Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/you-have-offended-this-podcast-1. In maybe our most 1983 episode yet, we celebrate the BIG 4-0's of two mostly forgotten trash-action flicks we instantly fell in love with: The bonkers this-is-what-you-get-for-making-Conan-a-hit, sword and sorcery adventure DEATHSTALKER; and the Golan-Globus Hey-it's-the-'80s-and-Ninjas-are-hot?-Well-here's-our-Cannon-Films-take-on-that-shit baller REVENGE OF THE NINJA!! As always, please rate, like, and subscribe! We'll be back next week with a bonus episode devoted to two of the seminal works of one the 1990's most underrated actors (and rappers), the one and only ICE-MOTHERFUCKING-T. Get ready for our takes on RICOCHET and SURVIVING THE GAME!!! Have a great Labor Day holiday and we'll see you next time!
It's August 26th, 1983, and unfortunately there just wasn't much at the box office celebrating its BIG 4-0 this weekend. So, Peter and Ron take the opportunity to look back at two of their favorite Buddy action flicks of all-time: Clint Eastwood, Charlie Sheen, and Raul Julia in THE ROOKIE, and Bruce Willis and Damon Waynes in THE LAST BOY SCOUT. We feel these are seminal entries in the genre, and if you don't agree, allow us to explain/convince you why. Please remember to rate, like, subscribe; and we'll be back next week to celebrate THE BIG 4-0's of DEATHSTALKER and REVENGE OF THE NINJA (told you its slim pickin's right now back there in 1983)
Ninja November continues with our friends Grady Hendrix and Chris Poggiali returning to take a deep dive into ninja culture and Sho Kosugi's classic Ninja II! All of your questions about one of the wildest trilogies in martial arts film history will be answered!
The guys dive back into the world of Cannon Films to talk about the wonderfully cheesy action-filled Revenge of the Ninja. They talk about kung-fu grandmas, small children having competitive fights with trained assassins, Sho Kosugi playing... Cho and the totally unearned heroic death scene. Plus: Brendan talks about his unique viewing experience of the movie and later - the guys' minds are blown when they discover a revelation about this movie and Joe Pesci. We gush about the amazing Shô and the introduction of his stylish and kickass son Kane, Firstenberg's brilliance, tennis court deathmatches, and of course... Fringe. We also talk about how the soundtrack rips, No Pants Karate, local UHF channels, rent-to-own prices, Brian's sensitivity as a child that caused him to miss a portion of The Great Muppet Caper and somehow we stumble upon Krippendorf's Tribe? Revenge of the Ninja by Talented Slackers
Next week's sequel is "American Ninja 2" and this week we are talking with Director Sam Firstenberg. Sam is someone who has directed so many of my favorite movies at one of my favorite studios, Cannon Films. Sam is the King of the Sequels, which I told him at the top of our chat, and it's true. He's directed the sequels "Revenge of the Ninja", "Breakin 2: Electric Boogaloo", and "American Ninja 2", just to name a few. Sam's journey to Hollywood from Jerusalem is so fascinating and it including a stop in the military on the way. Sam is a great storyteller who you will love.

apparently ninjas can hide behind anything..... ANYTHING!!! Also: There are too many ninjas in Japan so we must move to Utah. smh
After ninjas killed his family, Cho (Shô Kosugi) and his son Kane (Kane Kosugi) come to America to start a new life. He opens a doll shop but is unwittingly importing heroin in the dolls. When his friend (Keith Vitali) betrays him, Cho must prepare for the ultimate battle. New episodes every Wednesday!
For years Cannon Films has been celebrated for the mad movies they brought to the big screen in the 1980's. The company's focus on action films made that decade a crazed series of ever escalating, over the top adventures that often seemed uninterested in coherence and mostly concerned with creating a parade of stunts, violence and explosions. They had great success for a while but nearly every time they stepped away from fistfights, gunfights and car crashes they tended to lose a lot money. One of the biggest financial winners for Cannon was the trio of ninja films they produced from 1981 to 1984 starring Japanese martial artist Sho Kosugi as either the bad guy or the hero and sometimes both! Is there anything a ninja can't do? To discuss Cannon's epic ninja trilogy, I'm joined by an old work buddy who I don't get to see as often as I'd like. Brian Smith is a naturally funny guy with a love of exploitation films from the 1980's and a previously hidden childhood history of wishing he could be a ninja. Luckily for us his creative side has allowed him to focus some of that childhood longing into comedy and we end this episode with his hilarious song about the joys of the ninja arts. You have been warned! Brian and I relate our history with ninja films and our mutual love of the more insane aspects of these strange cinematic messes. With REVENGE OF THE NINJA (1983) as our jumping off point Brian tells of his parent's bad reaction to the opening sequence's violence. I think we've all been there. It can be difficult to move past ‘slaughter your whole family ninja violence' and allow a young lad the joys of seeing the drowning of scantily clad women in hot tubs. It's not really a ‘family movie night' kind of film. We have a good time digging deep into the madness of this mess of a movie that seems only barely held together by racial stereotypes, random action scenes and bad ideas. Thank goodness that some of those bad ideas involve turning the stuntmen loose with the camera crew to create some pretty fun stuff. It may not be a good film but it is an entertaining one. We also spend some time on ENTER THE NINJA (1981) and the even crazier NINJA III: THE DOMINATION (1984) to determine which is our favorite. There is even an unplanned sideroad discussion of Saturday morning cartoons in which we bond over the loss of the great Thundarr the Barbarian. There really should have been more episodes of that show made, dammit! You can email the podcast at thebloodypit@gmail.com or join us over on the FaceBook page. We'll be glad to hear from you!

Hughes returns for his final Grindbin episode and what better send off than the Cannon Films classic, Revenge of the Ninja (1983)? After his family is brutally murdered by a group of Ninjas, Cho moves to America to become a humble art dealer of G.I. Joes in Ninja costumes. Little does he know, America harbors just as many dangers as the country he left.
WARNING: This episode contains spoilers. It's time to return to franchise territory as we're heading back to the early 1980's and a (not really) trilogy courtesy of one of our favourite 1980's companies Cannon Films. This time out we're looking at Enter the Ninja, Revenge of the Ninja and Ninja III: The Domination which are the main films responsible for bringing the Japanese art of Ninjutsu to the North American masses. It was also our first exposure to the ultra cool Sho Kosugi. These are three films that helped shape our love of those black clad, gadget wielding silent killers and all of the low brow action flicks from the duo of Golan-Globus. As usual, we start with what we've been watching including a handful of low-budget horror with varying results, a comedy that had Chris questioning just what the Hell was going on in 1987, some homosexual bees(?), and much more! Thanks for listening! Be sure to head to iTunes to subscribe and drop us a five star rating/review - every little bit helps! Links to all our web stuff at www.gbwpodcast.com

JD and Randy vow revenge on all the bad movies. Come join us as we talk about "Revenge of the Ninja".
The association between Sam Firstenberg and Menahem Golan (of Cannon Films) had started in December of 1973. Years later, Golan and Globus hired Sam to direct what would become a huge cult classic with REVENGE OF THE NINJA. Sam knew nothing about martial arts, but learned quickly and the film, starred Sho Kosugi. Distributed by MGM to a great box-office bonanza, it set the stage for Sam's next directing assignment NINJA III: THE DOMINATION also starring Kosugi. Firstenberg eventually went on to direct BREAKIN 2: ELECTRIC BOOGALOO making him the king of sequels with a title that became a part of pop culture lexicon. Now a new book is in the works, all about Firstenberg’s unique brand of action cinema entitled Stories from the Trenches: The Official Sam Firstenberg Book. Having grown up in the VHS era and a fan of cult classics including BREAKIN 2 and NINJA III, I had the immense pleasure of talking with a rather idiosyncratic talent that contributed a lot of entertaining hours to my teenage years back in the 80s. FIRST OFF, THIS IS EPISODE 47 NOT 49, WHICH WILL MAKE SENSE WHEN YOU LISTEN TO THIS EPISODE!! It was a great pleasure to finally sit down with our friend Joe Hardcore (McKay) who you may know from the giant festival he runs, This Is Hardcore Fest, from the many shows he books in Philadelphia, or from some of the bands he has been in like SHATTERED REALM or PUNISHMENT. Regardless, we have known Joe for 20 years, and he has been an important part of the scene here in Philadelphia for even longer. In fact his first band, LTD played the first hardcore show I ever went to. Unlike a lot of folks, I came to hardcore from punk. When I was a freshman in highschool I was listening mostly to a combination of GREEN DAY, CRASS, THE CIRCLE JERKS, and COCKSPARRER thanks to the many weird punks who also went to Collingswood High School. However, that show at the Firenze which we discuss a tiny bit on the episode started me on a journey to where I am now, and I really appreciate that. Joe has been harassing us good naturedly for quite some time about not having him on the show, but the timing just never worked out until now. When we contact him about doing this episode, he knew IMMEDIATELY what he wanted to discuss: NINJA MOVIES! Not just any films either, specifically the work of Sho Kosugi, and mutually we decided to focus on perhaps the best of the Canon Films Group’s ninja trilogy, REVENGE OF THE NINJA!! Predictably, we end up ALL OVER THE DAMN PLACE, but in the best way possible. We covered a small part of many Ninja films, including PRAY FOR DEATH, ENTER THE NINJA, NINJA 3: THE DOMINATION, RAGE OF HONOR, and SUPER NINJAS ( 5 ELMENTS NINJA) It is a pretty great conversation! This was the kind of episode where we had so much we could talk about there was no way we could cover it all, so let us know if you wanna hear a part two sometime soon! We also mentioned a great deal of other films from the work of Takashi Miike to films like THE WITCH, ZOOTOPIA, and KINGDOM OF HEAVEN. SOUND NOTES: Towards the end of the first segment there is a weird buzz in the background. I have no idea why, and it seems to go away in the second segment. Sorry about that, hopefully it doesn’t bother you too much. Other then that episode went great! BIG THANKS TO JOE HARDCORE FOR RECORDING WITH US! BIG THANKS TO ALL OF YOU WHO SUPPORT US, AND TO FOLKS LIKE NICK SPACEK, PHIL SAYNISCH, EVAN VELLELA, SEAN BENNIS-SINE, JUSTIN HARLAN, ETHAN ANDERSON, JUSTIN MILLER, JOSEPH GERVASI, AND ANYONE ELSE WHO HAS POSTED ABOUT US AND SPREAD THE WORD! HUGE UPS TO MAD JOE FROM WISDOM IN CHAINS FOR WEARING OUR SHIRT AT THE JUDGE SHOW, AND TO JUSTIN LORE FOR REPPING US AT MONSTER MANIA!! This episode was a real reminder of how grateful we are to our friends and fans and collaborators who have helped make this thing possible. It is great to be a part of something so awesome. Mike Vanderbilt and Katie Rife of Daily Grindhouse and The A.V. Club sit down with sushi from Evergreen Park's Sesame Inn to discuss The Cannon Ninja Trilogy. While enjoying Sapporo and Horin Sake, Mike and Katie reflect on three popular films from Cannon Pictures: 1981's Enter The Ninja, 1983's Revenge Of The Ninja, and 1984's Ninja III: The Domination. Along the way, the hosts discuss the origins of ninjitsu, Japanese culture, and the best flea markets to find ninja weapons.
This week we continue our journey in the Cannon Ninja trilogy with Revenge Of The Ninja! This one is actually much better than the first and still holds up as a solid ninja action movie. This actually stars the bad ninja from Enter The Ninja, but this time in the role of the hero instead. Why this couldn’t just continue the story of Cole from the first movie? We have no idea! After his family is killed in Japan by ninjas, Cho and his son Kane come to America to start a new life. He opens a doll shop but is unwittingly importing heroin in the dolls. When he finds out that his friend has betrayed him, Cho must prepare for the ultimate battle he has ever been involved in. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/bmoviebreakdown/support

This show we review some 80s kung fu goodness. Get out your pen & paper, it’s time to count the number of bad stereotypes and the amount of times we say, “boobs!” Synthesizers, bad dialogue, karate kids and more synthesizers. This episode is a blast thanks to our guest, Arden. Interested in the film? Watch on Youtube. Watch on Amazon. Or cheap out and watch, Revenge of the Ninja in 4 minutes. It has all the great scenes covered, even the great pickup line, “If you want to workout, you forgot your pants.” “Lake-effect snow, ladies & gentleman.” Arden’s first movie memories revolve around horror films like The Deep, Alien and Friday the 13th. What’s a video tape rewinder? Let’s raise some money and get Arden a new Barbarella Laserdisc. What’s this Canadian Superchannel thing? Cartoon boobs? Kids will be kids and watch Heavy Metal. Fan site love for the actor in the film, Sho Kosagi. Playing his son in the movie is his real life son, Kane Kosagi. Trick editing, the secret of movie ninjas! Started by the early French master, Georges Méliès. Before Katniss was the Mockingjay, there was Sho’s family symbol which they proudly wear on their stealthy ninja outfits? Paul’s wife decided to stop watching this film when she saw the pirate bum, and started watching Salem instead. We all do impressions of Patrick Stewart getting a massage from Will Riker. Thanks to Wikipedia and Revenge of the Ninja we know what a Death Erection is. Keith Vitali is a former Karate champ and surely not an actor. We have Italian & Japanese stereotypes, let’s add a Native American named, Chief. He’s played by Don Shanks from The Life and Times of Grizzly Adams. Professor Toru Tanaka has been in lots of films. He’s a Professor of wrestling? The Village People are not in this movie. Arden schools us on caltrops. Kane Kosagi went on to continue starring opposite busty women in DOA:Dead or Alive, based on the exploitive (NSFW) video game. Better left in the childhood, Buck Rogers, Greatest American Hero or the original Battlestar Galactica. Recommendations: Kung Fu Hustle, Ong Bak and the ridiculous Chocolate. More recent Sho Kasagi? Try Ninja Assassin. Thanks again to Arden for joining us. Hopefully, he returns real soon to watch some more bad films with us. Support Film Frown on Patreon
Payback is deadly. This week at The B-Movie Clubhouse the gang will talk about a film that Nic selected from 1983 called Revenge of the Ninja. Go ninja go ninja go! Go ninja go ninja go! Go ninja go ninja go! Go go go go!No seriously: GO. You suck. No, you can't have a ride home. I don't care. Take the bus or something. The Tale of the TapeFilm: Revenge of the Ninja (1983)Director: Sam FirstenbergRuntime: 90 minutesGenre: Ninja RevengeStars: Sho Kosugi, Keith Vitali, Throwing StarsRated: R for Graphic Violence, Lazy Italian and Japanese Stereotypes, Pantsless Karate Fights, and Excessive Guyliner.IMDb, Wikipedia, Ninja Movie ReviewsTo get this REVENGE OF THE NINJA GYMKOMMENTARY FILE in your iTunes, open iTunes then go "Advanced" to "Subscribe to Podcast" and then enter this link:http://feeds.feedburner.com/gymkommentaryAs you'll hear, Chris and I are somewhat skeptical of this film's title. It's Revenge of the Ninja, and you've got Ninja Movie Hall of Famer Sho Kosugi getting revenge on the dudes who killed his family. Simple right? Wrong. The dudes who killed Sho's family are ninjas, and it looks like they're getting revenge for something too. So it's like Revenge of the Ninja on the Revenge of the Ninjas. But then it gets MORE complicated: because the Sho's business partner gets -- SPOILER ALERT! -- double crossed on a drug deal, and he's ALSO a ninja and then HE gets revenge. So it's really Revenge of the Ninja on the Ninja Who Wanted Revenge on the Ninjas Who Previously Got Revenge. I think I read somewhere that that was the original title. Whatever you want to call it, this is another craptacular 80s flick from one of our favorite directors here at Gymkommentary, Sam Firstenberg (Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo). There are fights and more fights and then a fight on a badminton court. That's right: this commentary will rock your shuttlecocks or your money back! Since you didn't pay a dime, I'm not too worried.
In this episode, Mom and I review Revenge of the Ninja -- quite possibly the Greatest Movie EVER!
