Episode 161 Melissa Mastrangelo of Denied and All Shall Suffer Melissa grew up in Queens at a perfect time for find herself at the beginning of a new age of NYHC. From Bulldoze to Denied and others, the beginning of a heavier focus brought about the foundation of what alot of modern hardcore kids and bands are focused on, the "Beatdown" sound. Her story is awesome and she is at the right place at the right time for so many great moments. She has been a high school teacher for years but found time to start All Shall Suffer around the pandemic years and is playing This Is Hardcore this summer with Denied as part of their Reunion. This is a fun conversation and lots of great memories come back having her on the show. The 2024 Record Store Day is in the books. We had a variety of RSD exclusive releases in mind when we set out this past weekend morn. One particular platter was the '77 Ennio Morricone "Orca" soundtrack. The flick is an old fave about a vengeful killer whale seeking revenge on the fisherman that slaughtered his family. We obsessed over this record, bouncing from shop to shop. Kind of a real life Captain Ahab as he obsessed over his elusive whale in classic novel "Moby Dick". Just call us Ismael. Was RSD a success for you? Do you find your booty? In our "News, Views and Tunes", we pay tribute to two legends and announce the 2024 This Is Hardcore fest. Musically, crank some Witchfinder General, Cold As Life, ACXDC, Pentagram (Chile), Seth, Castle Rat and we introduce Quebec bashers Backstabber in our "Indie Spotlight". Horns Up!
This episode of Across The Margin: The Podcast presents an interview with the author of the 33 ⅓ book dedicated to the legendary Britpop band Pulp's renowned album This is Hardcore, Jane Savidge. As co-founder and co-head of legendary PR company Savage & Best, Jane Savidge is widely credited as being one of the main instigators of the Britpop movement that swept the UK in the mid 1990s. During this time, Savage & Best represented Suede, Pulp, The Verve, Elastica and Longpigs, whilst representing many other artists of the era including the Cranberries, The Fall, and Jesus and Mary Chain. She is the author of Lunch With The Wild Frontiers (2019) and Here They Come With Their Make Up On: Suede, Coming Up and More Adventures Beyond The Wild Frontiers (2022). This Is Hardcore is Pulp's cry for help. A giant, sprawling, flawed masterpiece of a record, the 1998 album manages to tackle some of the most inappropriate grown-up issues of the day – fame, aging, mortality, drugs, and pornography – and still come out crying and laughing on the other side. In this episode host Michael Shields and Jane Savidge dig into the weighty themes present in This is Hardcore revolving around fame, aging, success, and pornography. They expound upon the “Michael Jackson Incident” which propelled lead singer Jarvis Cocker to unfathomable fame, how Jarvis used music and the crafting of This is Hardocre as catharsis for his real life struggles, what the final legacy of Pulp might be, and ultimately they celebrate a 33 ⅓ book that serves as a love letter to a remarkable album.Grab a copy of Jane Savidge's This is Hardcore here! “Lived Through That” is the companion podcast to my book where I look at influential musicians of the 80s and 90s and where they are today. On this podcast, we'll delve deeper into a single pivotal moment in the lives of some of the artists I feature in that book, as well as other artists I love and admire. The stories they tell are open, honest, and inspiring. This week, we're shifting gears a bit with our guest Jane Savidge. Yes, there was a time when she was in a band called Kill Devil Hills, but ultimately she started a PR company called Savage & Best which promoted a slew of the biggest British bands of the 90s, including Suede, Pulp, Elastica, and so many others. There's even a legend that Jane coined the phrase “Britpop.” Her first book, Lunch With The Wild Frontiers: A History Of Britpop And Excess in 13 and a 1/2 Chapters, was a fantastic read. Her second book, Here They Come With Their Make Up On: Suede, Coming Up And More Adventures Beyond The Wild Frontiers, was released in 2022 and her third book on Pulp's “This is Hardcore” will be released March 7th. It's part of the brilliant 33 1/3 series from Bloomsbury Press. You can order hernew book, "Pulp's This Is Hardcore" here. Musical credits: "Shelftop Speech" from Blue Dot Sessions Be sure to look out for my books, "Lived Through That" and "80s Redux" where ever you buy your books! If you have been actively involved in hardcore in the northeast in the past 25-30 years, you have likely been to a show with Jeff Lasich. I first met Jeff in 1998 when he was living in the Syracuse area. We had a very similar interest in hardcore, straight edge, graffiti, and fanzines. I don't know if I ever realized that Jeff didn't actually live in NY for that long until we did this interview. He was up here so often for so many years I guess I just assumed he always lived up here. Originally from the Pittsburgh area, Jeff also lived in Philadelphia for a time before moving back to Pittsburgh. If you have been to This Is Hardcore or FYA fest (or seen videos like me), you have likely seen Jeff on stage taking photographs. We talk about how Jeff got into photography and how he has evolved as a photographer. We also discuss fanzines too. When I first met Jeff he was doing a zine called Death Before Dishonor. Most people listening to this are likely more familiar with Start Today, the fanzine Jeff started a few years later. Due to printing costs getting higher and higher, Jeff has made the fanzine available to download in recent years. I'm including a link to the pdf of a recent issue in the show notes. Jeff also has put out some pretty good hardcore records on his label Bottled Up Records. We talk about Jeff working with bands like Have Heart, One Up, Blistered, Outlast, and The First Step. It's always fun interviewing people that haven't been in 50 bands. You will also notice Jeff and I talked about a show I did here in 2003 when Rochester had a large power outage due to an ice storm. It's interesting because our power went out in my house during this interview due to the wind storm I mentioned in my intro to the episode. https://www.mediafire.com/file/4eu4387n9z0jce6/Start_Today_%25239_PDF_Final.pdf/file https://www.enterprisehardcorepodcast.com/ https://www.patreon.com/EnterpriseHardcorePodcast --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/enterprise-hardcore-podcast/support

Presented by Revolver Magazine, hosted by Christina Rowatt.
Keith and Tommy sit down with Ryan "Pao" Paolilli of Kaonashi to discuss his history in music, growing up in MA, moving to Philadelphia and joining Kaonashi. We also discuss the recording of Kaonashi's latest LP, their This Is Hardcore performance, what's coming up next for the band and more.
Episode 45 Shane Merrill. 20 plus years of Heists, Rumbles and Chicago Hardcore Shows. Shane Merrill is another long time friend whose work out of a small Knights of Columbus in a suburb just outside of Chicago inspired alot of what would come into play with This Is Hardcore . The Arlington Heist was one of the first "fests" we would attend annually, whether on the road with Dysphoria or with Punishment or Shattered Realm. He has grown alot from Hall shows into holding down a calendar for Reggies, a 3 room venue in Chicago. We talk on his early days, the bands he and his friends did as kids and what got him going into the world of promoting. With the announcement of the Killer Reunion, the band Shane plays in, and 2 reunion shows he booked in August, I wanted to have him on to talk about all of it. He's been a friend for over 20 years and his story is awesome. The Philadelphian spends a huge part of his time away from his career as a union cement mason booking shows, with the "This Is Hardcore" festival being the main focus. Episode 14 James Vitalo.. Dealing With The Devil James Vitalo is best known as the frontman of Backtrack, a Long Island Hardcore band that inspired a resurgence of bands, shows and activity in the area. We go through some of the early days of the band and touch on the breakup. I spent a good amount of time discussing James's work first as a booking agent under State of Mind Booking and later as manager of Terror, Turnstile, Knocked Loose etc while working with Good Fight Entertainment. Having watched him rise from the beginning to working with him on plenty of shows and with his bands being a part of This Is Hardcore every year, I watched his progression and I knew he'd be a great guest to speak on different aspects of Hardcore, from being in the band, to booking the bands and then to managing the bands. He has a great connection to hardcore and his grounding in it has lead to him being able to work between the world of hardcore and to get the bands the support they need as they rise to the occasion of their growing popularity. His early roots are completely DIY and he is very hands on still to this day in how he operates. There is alot to glean from here on the who/what/where but more importantly some of the subtle How's and Why's to do things.
Episode 11 Salem Vex of Bloodbather Salem Vex is a self taught musician whose background and story is worth detailing. From how he found hardcore, to the struggle of being raised in a single parent home. The resilience in the face of the adversities before him, he managed to teach himself guitar, start a band so he could travel and eventually found himself and the strength to break the mold of stereotypical subculture costumes and began his adrogynous style of dress. Bloodbather played This Is Hardcore in 2019. I hadn't spoke much to him aside from interactions on twitter and I was constantly impressed by his talents beyond Bloodbather. Despite the more metallic sounds of Bloodbather and being signed to Rise Records, they are 100% DIY, from how they booked their tours, to the recordings early on. Salem would continue his self taught DIY, creative energy into producing beats and working on Synths, while also hosting a Local goth night. As hardcore grows, there is more influences that come from outside the sphere of the originators of the hardcore punk sound, but as in the case with Salem and people like him, they draw their influences and invest them into their projects which pushes the modern hardcore sound. After having the conversation on this episode, I have found that not only do I have a deeper friendship with him, but that we grew up and hold many similar ideas. There is alot to learn and take to heart, in the way that he didn't let his background hold him back from trying new things, pushing forward and finding a way to learn how to play, buy instruments, book tours and get the world to pay attention to Bloodbather. His work touches back on many previous guests and their ability to network and use youtube and other internet sources to push forward his drive towards success. This is a great story of innovation, never giving up and always looking to find a way to make things happen. twitter.com/salemvex instagram.com/salemvex twitter.com/bloodbather instagram.com/bloodbather
Together with American Songwriter we had the pleasure of interviewing Bloodbather over Zoom video! Broward County, Florida-based metal band Bloodbather — Kyler Millo [vocals, bass] and Salem Vex [guitar, synths] — released their new EP Silence via Rise Records."'Silence' is about being manipulated for a long time and realizing it, but not really having the power to retaliate at the time, which then pressures you to become stronger to overcome this oppressive figure," Kyler shares about the uncompromisingly brutal track.Bloodbather were recently christened an "Artist You Need To Know" by Revolver, which lauded the band's ability to craft "nasty, gnarly metallic hardcore rendered all the more suffocating by layers of industrial texture" and featured them in a multi-page spread. Formed in 2018, Bloodbather stormed out of the gates with the independent EP Pressure. The release has since amassed 666k Spotify streams — how metal! — as the group built its live reputation by sharing the stage with everyone from Whitechapel to Carnifex to Of Mice & Men, and by appearing at the notable This Is Hardcore festival.Bloodbather enjoyed early praise from the tastemakers at Invisible Oranges, who stated that the band "swings their music like a battle-axe into naysayer faces, living up to their namesake with flying crimson colors." They earned additional acclaim from SVBTERRANEAN, which proclaimed them "one of the newer bands to embrace and reformulate the angst-ridden, chunky metalcore of old, and one of the newer bands to do it right." Bloodbather signed with Rise Records in 2019 and subsequently hit the studio in Tennessee alongside producer Tate Mercer [Better Off, Chamber, Hampton].Armed with a take-no-prisoners approach and an EP that leaves an indelible mark, Bloodbather are on the verge of becoming one of heavy metal's next big things. The band will most certainly appeal to fans of Code Orange, Knocked Loose, and Vein.We want to hear from you! Episode 5 The Winston Wolf of Hardcore Fests with Rich Hall Rich Hall is one of the most involved and dedicated promoters from the late 90s and billed some of the most outstanding, diverse and sometimes eclectic shows from 97 to 2011. His impact on Hardcore was felt throughout the country as well with helping at various festivals etc. Starting out helping Tyler King of Kingsize Bookings at the Legendary CBGB's, Rich ushered in a new era into HC at the end of the 90s, working with the bands that would bend and break all the genre trappings. From ISIS, Converge, to American Nightmare, From Autumn To Ashes, Poison the Well, the world of hardcore was once again seeing a new path carved and Rich was in the right place, New York City, at the time to foster these bands, while still getting a lesson from the school of hard knocks from the OG's of NYHC. His talent handling CBGBs and other NYC would lend himself to work with various record labels in promotional depts and later as an A&R. He was recruited to help out a fest in Syracuse, NY which was starting to grow in popularity and became the man who put out fires, ran stages and keep things under control for a few years at Hellfest. We even talk about the fallout of Hellfest 04 and the disaster of Hellfest 2005. His experience and skills were put to the test in various other festivals, including most recently This Is Hardcore. Aside from promoting and working within the Record end of the Music Industry, Rich Hall is a painter who lives in the Pacific Northwest with his wife and son. He still has some plans for the future to despite the state of the world right now so we should stay tuned on what he has up next. This story is a great tale of what anyone who wants to get involved in the backend side of working/running shows has to do to start. He has alot to say, great stories and an inspiring yet direct tone to how he went about learning from the old school and applying it to the new school of his era. He is another creative, obsessive and dedicated person whose story lends to each of our previous episodes and I hope you enjoy his lesson on never vouching for anyone. https://www.richhallartwork.bigcartel.com https:// www.instagram.com/rich_hall You can email him at 1000knives@me.com Rich Photo by Chrissie Good @chrissiegood on IG
On this episode, we go deep into one of the unsung heroes of PAHC, Chris Spear, Drummer of Dysphoria & How it Ends. Chris and Joe go through a huge portion of Chris's life from early moments finding Black Sabbath, to teaching himself to play drums. From the beginning of Dysphoria and all the little things from promoting pre internet, finding sources to produce tapes and later cds, you'll hear one of the people in the mid 90s to early 00s who always had his band's best interest in mind. Be it promoting the band at other shows and in record stores on the east coast, to calling promoters to get on shows, through his own booking of shows, Chris delivers an old school how to on just about every aspect of DIY band management, including booking US tours as an unknown independent band in '99. This tour would be a pivotal moment, not only for Chris and Dysphoria, but a life changing experience for Joe Hc, who credits this tour with being one of foundations of his being able to also tour and later book This Is Hardcore fest. Having been friends with Chris for 25 years, Joe and Chris have a more casual yet still informative conversation about all the ins and outs, the ups and downs of what it was like to make things happen in a pre internet music world. I won't ruin how it ends, but I'll say that if you're in a band now, this is the episode that will inspire you to push forward and start working harder. https://dysphoriapahc.bandcamp.com/ CGFaNmLpLW5ZqEXaxn1M
On this episode, Sunny takes us down the rabbithole, from the beginning of his archive collecting, to bmx and early show footage. There is alot in here that hasn't been heard before and 99% is a great blueprint or inspiration to those who are looking to do something and need the drive or extra push to start. From his high school days through college, we follow him to his first year shooting This Is Hardcore. What started off as a novel concept grew Sunny and Hate5six.com from a local videographer to a name that is known throughout the world. Sunny's work would bring hardcore bands live sets to all the corners of the globe, and would later take Sunny out to Europe, Asia and Australia filming bands. Sunny uses Hate5six.com platform to inspire new generations of Hardcore Punk fans, shed new light on old tapes from the past and also shed light on the plight of marginalized peoples struggling against fascists. The interview runs well over 2 hours, but again when you sit down and give it a go, it will breeze by. Sunny has a great story, and incredibly inspiring drive to learn new skills, which would give him the opportunity to further his drive to shoot more bands, deliver more live sets and ultimately change his destiny from a computer programmer to a full documentarian/videographer. There is just too much in this episode to jot down here, but its worth the full time and you will come out having new found understanding and respect for this man's drive or just be inspired by his ingenuity. https://www.hate5six.com https://www.youtube.com/user/hate5six https://www.instagram.com/hate5six/ https://twitter.com/hate5six

This week: new albums from Lime Cordiale and BOIDS, '90s alternative tribute album Fuse Box, apparently RATM were political, citation needed, history repeating, loving yourself some yourself, this is an audio medium, Fans Also Like, money talks, definitive seven-word reviews, sweaty cuddles, top hits, the most Triple J Triple J bands of 1995, urgey gurgey, gritty reboots, fake drama, Kazoo TV, [SPOILERS], great opening lines, Greek theatre, conscientious objection, anyway where’s Wonderwall, The Neverending BALLS Podcast Story, translating jokes into Swedish, participation trophies, never review Tay-Tay, Raven Bond, bad content is good content, beaning Astros, leaning into the camp and Northern Beaches pubs. The sixteenth in a series of podcasts during the Coronavirus pandemic. "The Isolation Sessions". My guest is Bryan Harris. Singer for Boston Hardcore band "Death Before Dishonor". I've been wanting to sit down and talk with Bryan for a while now. So, what better time than now while we can't even go to a show or even meet in person? We go back to the formation of the band, signing to "Bridge Nine Records", all of their records, line-up changes, and the future. The last time I saw "DBD" was at last year's "This Is Hardcore" Festival in Philly, and they were one of my favorite sets of the weekend. Great band, super cool guy. I hope to see them at a show sooner rather than later. As always, thank you for always listening. Support "Death Before Dishonor". Respect.

The ninth in a series of podcasts during the Coronavirus pandemic. "The Isolation Sessions". My guest is Jesse Adkins. Singer for Detroit hardcore band "Smash Your Enemies", "Born Of Hate" and former singer for legendary band "Cold As Life". I met Jesse a few years back when "Cold As Life" played my friend "Ratbones'" 50th Birthday Party Show in Brooklyn. We stayed in touch via social media and met up again a couple years back at "This Is Hardcore". He's always been a super nice guy and have mutual respect for each other. He's also a huge horror movie fan. So I figured I'd reach out to have a conversation with my boy from Detroit. We talk about Detroit, his bands, a little about his hard upbringing, horror movies and how Rob Zombie should stick to making "White Zombie" music. I have nothing but respect for him. Enjoy!
Pulp's drummer Nick Banks shares the story behind the band. We cover Pulp's late 80s wilderness, legendary Glastonbury appearance up to their current hiatus. Hear about the writing and recording process behind tracks including Babies, Common People, This Is Hardcore and Pulp's Bond theme that never was, Tomorrow Never Lies. Babies (Single A-side, Gift, 1992) […] The post Nick Banks – Pulp appeared first on The Strange Brew.
For so many of us, My Chemical Romance soundtracked our angsty youth. Their theatrical music was mirrored by the wild shows, and Gerard Way was at the centre of it all. He wasn't just a musician - he was an illustrator, a comic book author, and most of all a fan. In 2015 he was in Australia performing at the Soundwave festival off the back of his debut solo album Hesitant Alien and supporting the Smashing Pumpkins so I grabbed the chance to Take 5. Supergrass - ‘Caught By The Fuzz' David Bowie - ‘Five Years' Iggy & the Stooges - ‘Search and Destroy' Sleater-Kinney - ‘I Wanna Be Your Joey Ramone' Pulp - ‘This Is Hardcore'

The Final "Back To School Jam" is happening on Saturday, September 7th at White Eagle Hall in Jersey City! I met up with Greg Falchetto, the man responsible for this show to speak about it. We go into the entire line ip and also bring it back to his early days in the hardcore scene in New Jersey. From the formation of his former band "The Mongoloids" and into "World Demise". We also discuss his role every year in the annual "This Is Hardcore" fest in Philly. Great conversation with a really good guy. Support underground music and the Back To School Jam. If you're in the trig-state area or beyond and wanna check out a dope show... you need to be there! Enjoy.
The singer for Pittsburgh Hardcore band Enemy Mind. They played the Friday of this year's This Is Hardcore fest. I caught up with him the following day to shoot the shit for a quick few minutes about the band their set and what's up next for them. Mad cool guy and dope band. Support Enemy Mind!

After another amazing weekend... it's time for the This Is Hardcore 2019 Wrap Up Report. The entire This Is Hardcore Team deserves their props. The time, work and passion these people have into putting on, in my opinion, the best Hardcore fest in the United States.

In a very loud and chaotic backstage area at This Is Hardcore 2018, I caught up with Chris Golas (drums) and John Doherty (bass) from Agents Of Man to touch on a few things about their plans, their set at the festival and a few other things. With a little side conversation with Sean Martin of Twitching Tongues and Hatebreed. Sometimes in this environment, you don't know what can happen or who will drop in to say a few words. This was hectic but definitely a fun few minutes. Hope you enjoy it. Respect.
Being trapped inside The Electric Factory at This Is Hardcore 2018 for a couple hours due to pouring rain, I spotted Jack from the band "No Option" who opened the show on that Friday and asked to speak to him for a couple minutes. Being such a young band, I was pleasantly surprised by the reaction they got. Super nice kid in a dope band. Support them. They seem to "get it".
Recorded Live from This Is Hardcore 2018 at The Electric Factory in Philadelphia. Cody (Vocals) and Mark (Bass) from "Gloves Off" sat down and chopped it up about everything from their upcoming Fastbreak Records release, to future shows to breaking each others chops constantly. I had a lot of fun doing this. Yes, it's hectic in the background and people make little cameo appearances... but this is what happens when you have no map to follow when doing a Live podcast from a hardcore festival with thousands of people. Thanks for listening.
This Is Hardcore 2018 was an amazing and memorable 4 days. So I decided to do a quick little bonus episode speaking on it. The entire This Is Hardcore Team deserves it. The time, work and passion these people have into putting on, in my opinion, the best Hardcore fest in the United States is second to none.
Me and The O.G. were talking about doing this episode for about 6 months. So, finally, during the weekend of this year's "This Is Hardcore" Festival in Philadelphia, I met up with him at Cresson Street Tattoo and finally sat down to do a little blah blah. He's the singer for "Done Deal", one third of the "Broad Street Breakdown" podcast along with Vinnie Paz and Pablo Regular... who makes several little appearances throughout the episode. One of the best guys I know and absolutely one of the realest. Recorded in the basement at the tattoo shop, away from the chaos upstairs we spoke about everything from old school wrestling, hardcore, shows, the annual Cresson Street Tattoo toy drive,Trump and the 1985 "MOVE" bombing in Philadelphia. I hope you enjoy this episode. We had fun doing it. Respect.

On this week’s show… Can Steven Soderbergh’s UNSANE drag the stalker movie into the iPhone era? Jake Shears of Scissor Sisters writes a surprisingly moving book. How does Pulp’s Britpop comedown epic ‘This Is Hardcore’ stack up at 20 years old? And our guests reveal the records that they like but nobody else can stand. This week on Episode 66 of Bobby Pickles' Podcast (Dying Scene Radio #11), The Bobs interview South Central Los Angeles-based comedy punk rock band Tartar Control - a three-piece comprised of two Mormon missionaries and a robot. Bob and Bobby host a cordial discussion with Sean (Guitar/Angelic Singing), Robert (Screaming) and Robot (Bass/Drums) about the origin of their band and humanity alike, their insanely hilarious YouTube videos, and their new record, “We Forgive You”, which drops on April 6th. SYNOPSIS OF BANTER: Bobby admits to being a “pro wrestling dork” as a child growing up in a region chock-full of household wrestling names. Bobby recalls watching the 90’s romance classic, Sleepless In Seattle, in the same movie theatre as Hulk Hogan. Bobby teaches Bob a new word: Sycophant. Bob makes generalizations about Canadians, then references Avril Lavigne and her useless husbands. Bobby attempts to convert Tartar Control to Scientology, arguing that robots and aliens go hand-in-hand. Bob compares Mormon uniforms to the garb painters traditionally wear, then humblebrags about recently meeting Andrew WK. Sean and Robert discuss the challenges of traveling with a robot, sharing one of their fun experiences with the TSA. Bob disrespects the memory of both Jim Morrison and Joey Ramone. Bobby mentions his “Lizard King” tattoo. Then, Bob reveals to the world that Bobby Pickles began his rise to prominence in 2013 when he appeared on the TLC reality series “America’s Worst Tattoos”. Bob concedes to being a “bad father” for allowing his children to watch Tartar Control’s pilot episode. The band mentions noticing more and more “multi-generational punk rock families” at their concerts, acknowledging that the presence of children is “never not awkward” (intentional double-negative). NOTE: Tartar Control is NOT for children. Bob discloses his shaving habits, while Sean and Robert share a few tips about oral hygiene. Bobby grills Sean about his “Open Me” tuning and the rhythm section’s (Robot’s) BPM. Then Sean, Robert and Robot sing some acapella. Robot voices his displeasure with Bob Noxious, repeatedly insulting him. Bob feels he and Robot should get along better given their shared technologically advanced natures.
