Charles Raymond Starkweather was born in Lincoln, Nebraska, on November 24, 1938. He was the third of seven children born to Guy and Helen Starkweather. They were an ordinary, working-class family, and there was nothing about them to suggest that one of the Starkweather children would grow up to be a natural born killer. Many traditional societies accept polygyny (one man, many wives). Monogamy, too, is practised across the globe. But what about polyandry — one woman, many husbands? Is this a "dubious idea" as sometimes suggested by evolutionary theorists? In this bonus clip, anthropologist Katie Starkweather offers interesting examples of formal and informal polyandry from around the world. She also brings nuance to theories about jealousy in men and women. (This is a previously unpublished clip from my conversation with anthropologist Katie Starkweather, as published in episode 43.) On January 21, 1958, nineteen-year-old Charles Starkweather changed the course of crime in the United States when he murdered the parents and sister of his fourteen-year-old girlfriend (and possible accomplice), Caril Ann Fugate, in a house on the edge of Lincoln, Nebraska. They then drove to the nearby town of Bennet, where a farmer was robbed and killed. When Starkweather's car broke down, the teenagers who stopped to help were murdered and jammed into a storm cellar. By the time the dust settled, ten innocent people were dead, and the city of Lincoln was in a state of terror. Schools closed. Men with rifles perched on the roofs of their houses. The National Guard patrolled the street. If there is a cultural version of PTSD, the town suffered from it. Starkweather and Fugate's capture and arrest, and the resulting trials about the killing spree, received worldwide coverage. The event would serve as the inspiration for the movie Natural Born Killers and Springsteen's iconic album Nebraska. Today, the story has dropped far from the national consciousness. With new material, new reporting, and new conclusions about the possible guilt or innocence of Fugate, the tale is ripe for an updated and definitive retelling. The number of hunter-gatherers is shrinking by the day. This original economy is likely to meet its end within our lifetimes. But as the ancient lifestyle fades away, curiosity about it is only increasing. I have felt this curiosity for years. I have interviewed scholars on many difficult questions: Do hunter-gatherers wage war? Do they have happy families? Do they work less for more? Amidst many thorny questions, I long presumed that we know one thing for sure: Hunter-gatherers divide jobs between the sexes. Men hunt. Women gather. Nicknamed “Man the Hunter”, this theory was the one thing we could take for granted. Then came 2023. Several articles brought attention to the role of women's hunting. They earned huge media attention. I covered the topic both on the podcast and in writing. For a moment, I thought I had it all figured out. I concluded that there is no real debate, just an important reminder not to slip "from more to all". Yes, women hunt. No, they don't do it nearly as much as men. And yes, this pattern is accepted by all serious scholars. I was wrong. Many scholars messaged me insisting that the debate was very real. Soon, new papers came out attacking the many claims made in 2023. I've spent a lot time in 2024 trying to get to the bottom of the topic. I've had conversations with several scholars on the matter. Perhaps the most interesting conversation was with Katie Starkweather, an Assistant Professor of Anthropology at University of Illinois. Starkweather studies women's decision making in a variety of cultures. For years, she has been a thoughtful critic of many myths around women's behaviour and biology. Typically, she pushed against traditionalist ideas about fixed gender roles. But she has also become a critic of the recent enthusiasm around “Woman the Hunter”. This makes her a particularly nuanced commentators on this sensitive topic. We began this conversation by talking about the basic question: What's the current debate about? And what does should make of the current evidence? (You can read my conclusion, with many more references, at OnHumans.Substack.com) This was all interesting. But towards the end, we turn to a deeper question — a question I find even more interesting: Does it matter? What is at stake in this debate? What are the implications for science? What about for gender equality? And what would a chimpanzee say about the topic? As always, we finish with my guests reflection on humanity. SUPPORT Do you like On Humans? In the late 1950s, specifically 1958, America was a nation caught between the idyllic post-war boom and the undercurrents of social unrest that would explode in the decades to come. It was during this time that Charles Starkweather, a 19-year-old with a James Dean fixation and a brooding persona, embarked on a murderous rampage across Nebraska and Wyoming, leaving 11 people dead. Among those implicated was 14-year-old Caril Ann Fugate, who, by all accounts, was present during these killings.

Full disclosure, Mitzi and Cat cuss like sailors. Buckle Up.In the name of "streamlining" you realize you've created a house of cards versus a stable business and how your desire to be challenged in what you create and how you create that thing you create and what it teaches us as people, and as business owners, and artists. So Mitzi and Cat go down the rabbit hole of appreciating and understanding where your natural strengths lie (through Clifton Strengths and Wealth Dynamics) so that you CAN focus on what you ARE great at and employ support in areas where you NEED it and be kinder to yourself in the process. It is understanding where your HEART is in alignment with your business that you can find the growth you are looking for and Mitzi discovered that when she was in avoidance; of her life, of what she WANTED FOR her life and her art was exactly when life (in doing what life does) forced her to really dig deep about what she truly is here to do and create her life into being.Following a tear of her achilles and then weeks later being diagnosed with breast cancer life had propelled her into a reevaluation none of us ever hopes to be confronted with, especially as a new parent. And as Mitzi points out, you have to work through the traumatizing thing before you can reflect ON the lessons the trauma teaches us, she admitted to herself that the status quo of her success in business wasn't fulfilling in the way she had created it to be. It was time to shift and there was no going back.Stripping away all of the fluff or as we coined "fucking shit up" is required to innovate, grow, and connect more deeply with ourselves and those we serve.Find Mitzi Here:Website: www.mitzistarkweather.comInstagram: @mitzistarkweather / @rawportraitscourseEnroll in Tei Hofford's Clifton Strengths coaching here:https://terihofford.com/clifton-strengths-coachingFull conversation on YouTube here:https://youtu.be/jLMN-qQUonI Are you a Photographer? Harry MacLean, author of Starkweather, The Untold Story of the Killing Spree That Changed America, discusses the 1958 murders that shocked the nation, drew national attention, and was an inspiration for the movie Natural Born Killers, Bruce Springsteen's Nebraska, a 1973, Martin Sheen movie, Badlands, and mention in Billy Joel's We Didn't Start the Fire.
I saw her standin' on her front lawnJust a twirlin' her batonMe and her went for a ride, sirAnd ten innocent people died From the town of Lincoln, Nebraska With a sawed off .410 on my lapThrough to the badlands of WyomingI killed everything in my path I can't say that I'm sorryFor the things that we doneAt least for a little while, sirMe and her we had us some fun Now the jury brought in a guilty verdictAnd the judge he sentenced me to deathMidnight in the prison storeroomWith leather straps across my chest Sheriff, when the man pulls that switch, sirAnd snaps my poor head backYou make sure my pretty babyIs sittin' right there on my lap They declared me unfit to liveSaid into that great void my soul'd be hurledThey want to know why I did what I didSir, I guess there's just a meanness in this world Those are the lyrics of the song, “Nebraska,” written by Bruce Springsteen in 1982 immortalizing the killing spree of Charles Starkweather and Caril Ann Fugate in Lincoln, Nebraska and nearby Wyoming in 1958. Were Charlie and Caril Ann a new breed of Bonnie and Clyde? Was 14-year-old Caril Ann, a willing and equal participant in 10 ruthless and gruesome murders, or was she a hostage? Books, movies, and endless documentaries have tried to answer that question. Harry N. Maclean has an “inside track” on the story having grown up at the time in Lincoln contemporaneously with Starkweather and Fugate. Today on MURDER MOST FOUL, Mr. Maclean shares his recollection of the period and what it was like to return to Lincoln to research his book, “STARKWEATHER: The Untold Story of the Killing Spree that Changed America.”
It seems that there's a mass shooting in America every few weeks. Stories of killing sprees or serial killers are commonplace on TV and in movies and books today. But, it wasn't always that way. There had to be a first and a time when multiple murders were new to a broad audience. Best-selling author Harry MacLean points to a gruesome series of murders in Nebraska and Wyoming in January, 1958 as that point. Nineteen-year-old Charles Starkweather, accompanied by his 14-year-old girlfriend, Caril Ann Fugate, shot and stabbed 10 people to death over an eight-day period. In all, Starkweather murdered 11 people. Maclean's recently published book is titled Starkweather – The Untold Story of the Killing Spree That Changed America.Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In 1958, 19-year-old Starkweather went on a killing spree that shocked the nation. He took his 14-year-old girlfriend, Caril, with him. The story of that crime spree has become a legend in true crime history, and Starkweather and Fugate have been portrayed as villains on par with Bonnie and Clyde. In this episode, I revisit this case by speaking with best-selling true crime author Harry MacLean. His new book Starkweather: The Untold Story of the Killing Spree That Changed America takes a comprehensive look at this case and comes to some new conclusions about Caril Fugate's guilt or innocence in the murders. True Crime Tuesday presents: Starkweather: The Killing Spree That Changed America with Author/Researcher, Harry N. MacLean! On January 21st, 1958, Charles Starkweather and his fourteen-year-old girlfriend Caril Ann Fugate changed the course of crime in the United States when they went on a murder spree through Nebraska and Wyoming. By the time the dust settled, ten innocent people were dead, and the city of Lincoln was in a state of terror. It was the first mass killing of the modern age, and television brought the crime spree and the trails into homes for the first time—it was a precursor of the awakening of the country from the slumber of the fifties to the rebellious, violent sixties. Soon to follow were Manson, Bundy, Speck, Gacey, DeSalvo, Ramirez, Whitman, Berkowitz, and numerous others. From Starkweather on, people in the Midwest locked their doors. No one is better suited to tell this story than best-selling true crime writer. Harry Maclean, who hails from the same town as Starkweather, and knew many of the people involved with the case (in fact his older brother had shop class with Starkweather). With new reporting and information about the case, and new conclusions about the possible guilt or innocence of Caril Ann Fugate, this is a tale that's long overdue for an updated and definitive retelling. Harry joins TCT today to talk about his new book, the relationship between Charlie and Caril, whether he thinks Caril really participated in the killings or not, and the ramifications of this case on American culture. Few American criminals have captured the imagination of Hollywood like Charles Starkweather, a red-haired James Dean wannabe who murdered eleven people in 1957 and 58. With him during most of his killing spree was his girlfriend (and possible accomplice) Caril Ann Fugate. Among the victims were Caril's own mother, step-father and little sister. My guest, Edgar award winner and bestselling author Harry N. MacLean, knew the Starkweather family as a boy in Lincoln, Nebraska. One of his main goals in writing his book, "Starkweather: The Untold Story of the Killing Spree that Changed America", was to examine more closely whether 14-year-old Caril was complicit in the murders, or instead coerced by Starkweather to participate. In this episode I explore the life of a pioneer medical doctor, Simeon Starkweather French. His grandfather severed actively in the American Revolution, his father served in the War of 1812 as a medical doctor, and he served in the American Civil War. He played an active role in the medical profession, as well as education in Battle Creek, and served two terms as Mayor. His story is a fascinating history. In 1958, the nation was horrified by a random murder spree across the Midwest by teenager Charles Starkweather and his girlfriend Caril Ann Fugate. Authorities said Starkweather was responsible for 11 deaths - including those of Fugate's parents and sister - but they didn't believe the 14-year-old's claims she was an unwitting accomplice. When he shifted blame for the crimes on Caril, she said she was the last of Starkweather's victims. She received little sympathy from the courts or the public. Even after her parole in 1976, her infamy followed her everywhere, threatening her dreams of an ordinary life. The Showtime series “The 12th Victim” reexamines Caril Ann Fugate's actions and the criminal trial that made her the youngest woman convicted for first-degree murder. It also discusses the murders' influence on movies, music, and pop culture.OUR SPOILER-FREE REVIEWS OF "THE 12TH VICTIM BEGIN IN THE FINAL TEN MINUTES OF THE EPISODE.

Today we welcome medium, occult practitioner and spiritual cleaner Andy Starkweather. Andy has been a medium for over 20 years ago and has had ‘a wild ride'. Everything from being attacked by spirits to bizarre animal interactions to cleansing properties of trapped spirits and dealing more sinister entities. Andy has a wealth of information derived from practical experience and regales us with many stories from his 20 years of work as a medium. One thing I really found useful was Andy's view on boundaries and how he would employ discernment when working with spirits. In the Plus show we get into some of Andy's cases and strategies employed to deal with them, ranging from hauntings to poltergeists to demons. This is rich stuff. We also go through the challenges of shadow work and the occult… spoiler, it ain't pretty. To close we discuss and compare our own past life regression experiences. Enjoy! In the winter of 1957-58, 19 year old Charlie Starkweather went on a killing spree that would claim eleven victims before he and his accomplice, Caril Ann Fugate, were caught. At their trial, both were found guilty of murder. Charlie was executed while Caril was given a life sentence, later reduced. In The 12th Victim, Nicola Marsh explores what happened during the killing spree from Caril's perspective. She shows how, contrary to what was said at the time, Caril was not Charlie's girlfriend but his ex; neither was she his willing accomplice but his hostage. And, most importantly, although convicted of murder, she killed no one. As Nicola tells Matthew Sherwood, the Starkweather murders “coincided with the birth of live television news”. This gave both Charlie and Caril an immediate notoriety that encompassed all of America. In the years since, the case has also influenced the arts. Nicola cites Badlands (1973), True Romance (1993), and Natural Born Killers (1994) as films all inspired by what happened. They also explore how The 12th Victim was made – from Nicola's use of archival footage to the different ways she recreated key scenes. And they look at the question of what makes the true crime genre so popular, Nicola offers this succinct answer: “You get to experience all the things you're afraid of, but in a very safe way.” At the heart of it all, however, stands a young girl whose life was ruined by the actions of others. Starkweather's malice, incompetent policing, and bad decisions made by her attorney gave Caril Ann Fugate little chance of escaping the nightmare. Nevertheless, she continues to protest her innocence and seek a pardon. “I think what really I found particularly compelling about the story was that for women, most women, we've all been in slightly sketchy situations. And the path out of it is laugh at the jokes until you have a clear exit strategy... If somebody gets a bit handsy, you don't turn around and punch them in the face, otherwise, you can end up dead.” – Nicola Marsh
Director Nicola Marsh discusses the four-part docuseries The 12th Victim. The Showtime series sheds new light on the infamous 1958 Charles Starkweather and Caril Ann Fugate murder case, in which the teenage couple was charged and convicted of brutally killing 11 victims at random. Told through a stylistic blend of archival and recreated footage and countless film and television series inspired by the killings, THE 12TH VICTIM reexamines Fugate's guilty verdict, who was 14 years old at the time of the killings, through a modern lens, questioning the media and judicial system's treatment of her despite her self-proclaimed innocence. In 1958, a grisly string of murders terrified the Midwest, as locals watched the 18-year-old Starkweather kill 11 victims in Nebraska and Wyoming with his girlfriend Fugate by his side. The Battle Creek House was built in 1836 by Leonard Starkweather, and served as the first framed hotel in the village of Battle Creek. The building would stand 30 years in the central heart of the village, and serve as a gathering place for all social activities. Starkweather remained owner of the hotel, although several different men served as managers over the years. The hotel would burn to the ground in 1866. In 1857, Leonard Starkweather had his namesake of one of a successful pioneer, change to one connected with a brutal tragedy when he murdered his wife in December of that year. The story of this magnificent hotel and the shadow of this tragedy is the subject of this episode. How does a 14 year old girl get caught up in the death of nine people? It seems like something out of a movie but this was real life for Caril Ann Fugate. Caril and her then boyfriend Charles Starkweather went on a killing spree in the 1950's. Her defense was she was not an active participant in the murders, but a hostage. Evidence says otherwise. #nebraska #murderers #teenagemurderer #murder
