Twenty years ago, Dallas Green and his band Alexisonfire were making post-hardcore music when Dallas decided to release a soft acoustic album under the name City and Colour. It was a big risk, but that debut solo album, “Sometimes,” went on to receive critical acclaim and a Juno Award. It was also the catalyst for Dallas to start his own independent record label, Dine Alone Records. On the 20th anniversary of “Sometimes,” Dallas sits down with Tom Power to share the real story behind the album.

Ryan Spalding and Jason Mudd discuss franchising, home improvement and home services.Guest:Our episode guest is Ryan Spalding of Toronto, Canada. He is the Director of Franchise Marketing at Garage Living where he has created and implemented the marketing strategy for over 40 franchise locations and leads the marketing team across all marketing channels. Five things you'll learn from this episode:How marketing in the music industry differs from the home improvement industryHow customer home service has changed after the pandemic How online reviews impact lead generationThe nuances of doing business internationallyHow PR can be used for franchisorsQuotables:[04:50] “[In the music industry and the home improvement industry] you're still using the same marketing principles. You're identifying your target market and you're looking at tactics to reach those of that audience, whether it's through traditional marketing, avenues, digital marketing avenues, or whether it's through publicity campaigns.” - Ryan[09:52] “During the pandemic, it was almost easier [for franchises] to launch, because everyone is really interested in improving your home during the pandemic.” - Ryan[11:12] “I think that the demand is reverting back to what it was before the pandemic. Now you're maybe back in the office and can travel. There's options to spend your money in other places.” - Ryan[18:37] “Now more than ever, online reviews are more important than perhaps they were a couple years ago. Especially for our industry and our segment.” - Ryan[19:04] “People are going to online reviews whether it's Google, Facebook, or the platform to see what the reputation is of the company, especially if they're not too familiar with it. That's a perfect place for them to go to.” - Ryan[19:30] “Google reviews are obviously super important because they feed into other aspects like your SEO and your google rankings.” - Ryan[21:00] “People are going to look to profiles to see if they're active, if they have a lot of followers, how they are responding to people leaving comments. It's just another way to build your reputation and your social trust.” - Ryan[23:00] “When we're looking at our marketing strategy, we're not looking at just one area of marketing, whether it be digital advertising, Google reviews, or social media, we're not just looking at them in silos, we're looking at them as a whole picture. I believe that PR plays a big role in that.” - RyanIf you enjoyed this episode, would you please share it with others and leave us a review?About Ryan SpaldingRyan Spalding of Toronto, Canada, is the Director of Franchise Marketing at Garage Living. We had the pleasure of interviewing We Are Scientists Zoom video!American rock band We Are Scientists debuted in the early aughts with the angular post-punk edge of With Love and Squalor, later evolving to incorporate polished synths and expanded atmospherics on efforts like 2016's Helter Seltzer, 2018's Megaplex, and 2021's Huffy. Although modestly popular in America, they were a hit in the U.K., where the group's sound -- part post-punk revival and part indie rock with a touch of '80s synth pop -- drew parallels to contemporaries like Editors, Franz Ferdinand, Interpol, and the Killers. Formed on the West Coast by three California-based college students, We Are Scientists officially took flight after frontman and guitar Keith Murray, bass player Chris Cain, and drummer Michael Tapper (who replaced founding drummer/vocalist Scott Lamb) relocated to Brooklyn and began building a small but devoted following. After releasing three EPs and one independent album -- Safety, Fun, and Learning (In That Order) -- the group signed with Virgin Records and released their major-label debut, With Love and Squalor, in early 2006. The effort peaked at ten on the Billboard Heatseekers chart and eventually was certified gold in the U.K. In 2008, We Are Scientists -- reduced to a duo comprising Cain and Murray after Tapper parted ways with the group -- put out their second full-length album, Brain Thrust Mastery. Produced by Ariel Rechtshaid, the set included the singles "After Hours" and "Chick Lit." As before, the record found popularity in the U.K., where it debuted at number 11 on the albums chart. In late 2012, the band entered the studio in New York with producer Chris Coady (Beach House, Gang Gang Dance, Blonde Redhead) to record sessions for their fourth record. Burrows relocated to the city from England while he worked with Murray and Cain to write and record tracks for the album. Titled TV en Français, it arrived in early 2014 on 100%/Dine Alone Records and featured appearances by Rose Elinor Dougall (Mark Ronson) and Tim Wheeler (Ash). In 2016, We Are Scientists returned with their fifth studio album, Helter Seltzer, produced by Max Hart (of Katy Perry's band). The effort charted in the Top 50 of the U.K. and Scottish charts. Two years later, they delivered their sixth effort, the polished Megaplex, also produced by Hart. The album featured the singles "Heart Is a Weapon," "Not Another Word," and "Your Light Has Changed."Following the 2020 launch of their own Dumpster Dive podcast, the group returned with the full-length Huffy in 2021. Although 2021's Huffy returned to a guitar-driven sound, Lobes, the band's eighth studio album, released early 2023, is their synthiest, electronic beatiest collection yet. So, really, who even is We Are Scientists? Founding We Are Scientists members Keith Murray (guitar) and Chris Cain (bass) have played with guys like Adam, Michael, Andy, Danny, Chris, Matt, and Gary on drums, but for over five years now have had Keith Carne, who looks like he isn't going anywhere. The band's previous singles “After Hours,” “Nobody Move, Nobody Get Hurt,” “The Great Escape,” “It's a Hit” and “Chick Lit” all have charted in the US/UK and the band have appeared on US late night talk shows, The Late Show with David Letterman, Conan and Carson Daly and performed at Coachella, Sasquatch, and All Points West festivals. In the UK, the band played the Reading and Leeds main stage and Glastonbury Festivals among other world-wide touring. The release of Lobes was celebrated with a very special hometown show at Brooklyn Made on January 20, 2023.We want to hear from you! Community is undoubtedly one of the main reasons music is so important to our mental health. When you discover a song where you feel as though the artist is singing to you, or the instrumental is the perfect soundtrack at that very moment - you get this feeling like someone understands you, that you're not alone. With so many artists focused on being present and relevant on social media and within the algorithm of streaming services, this is an element that gets lost on so many indie artists. Whitby, Ontario Based punk rock band Chastity have recognized the importance of creating community through their music. On January 13th 2022, the band released their 3rd full length album Suffer Summer - with many listeners singing its praises - myself included. Joining me today is the architect behind the project - Brandon Williams. Brandon and his band have toured Europe, parts of the united states with PUP the band, had most recently been opening for the Dirty Nil, has opened for City and Colour and Alexisonfire which likely won't be the last time either - and has signed to one of the most iconic independent Canadian labels in Dine Alone Records, while Deathwish records handles their international distribution. Upon the release of the album Chastity have been featured on billboard in the heart of Toronto at Yonge-Dundas square, and as of the time of this recording - is the face of the Ready to Rock Spotify playlist.Brandon and I have a unique connection in that he and I share the same hometown of Whitby.   We had the pleasure of interviewing NOBRO over Zoom video! Montreal's fierce rock quartet NOBRO released a new single "Better Each Day" via Dine Alone Records, mixed by two-time Grammy Award-winning engineer Dave Schiffman (Vampire Weekend, Adele). The anthemic track kicks off with the powerful set of vocals — "I spend my whole life running away…" — before culminating into the pounding drums, shredding riffs, and blistering vocals that NOBRO have become known for. A video directed and produced by Jeremy Shantz, Jenn Wade, and Daniel Esteban, and shot in the band's hometown of Montreal, will be released on October 13."I was experiencing some kind of crisis at the time of writing 'Better Each Day,' and if I remember correctly, it was a 'writing music' one," reflects vocalist and bassist Kathryn McCaughey. "There are times when songs come streaming out of you as though they wrote themselves into existence, and other times it can be as challenging as getting two purebred Persian cats to mate. I was sitting in our producer's studio when he suggested I might like a little jingle he wrote for a commercial that never got used. I thought it was dope and voila, this song was born. One day, you're punk as fuck, and the next, you're playing old unused car commercial jingles." New tour dates have been announced for NOBRO, who join Tokyo Police Club in the U.S. this November, then Billy Talent in 2022 for 10 dates across Canada.Featuring McCaughey's confident, cocky yell and blistering bass lines, Sarah Dion's signature backbone drums (McCaughey claims drummer Sarah Dion will "go down in history as one of the best drummers in the entire world"), killer riffs from guitarist Karolane Carbonneau, and sweeping keyboard licks and bongo solos from master of percussion Lisandre Bourdages, NOBRO have become a rock 'n' roll force to be reckoned with."I wanted to play this type of music but there wasn't a lot of women who wanted to play it. I wanted to be in the most kick-ass all-female band ever," says McCaughey. Resilient and tough, NOBRO are aware that they will face skepticism as part of the omnipresent sexism in the scene they inhabit, but that only spurs them on. "We said we would do it one way, and so we made sure that we were always doing it that way," she continues.McCaughey founded the band almost as a challenge to herself when the aftermath of a relationship with a prominent Montreal musician made her determined to be "more than just a footnote on this person's Wikipedia page." She realized she possessed all the tools to express herself in her own voice and to shape her own destiny. All that was needed were fellow musicians who felt the same. As fate has it, they were all nearby shaping their own destiny, mastering their instruments, ready to shred as hard as they could, and were ignited when they found each other. With co-writes with members of METZ and Fast Friends under their belts, as well as an EP titled Sick Hustle released in 2020 on Dine Alone Records, NOBRO are well on their way to achieving their goal. Their music video for "Don't Die," animated by Greg Doble, amassed a number of accolades including: Best Short Animation at Monster Flix Awards, Best Music Video at Hollywood Horror Fest, Best Music Video at Another Hole In The Head, Best Horror Music Video at Horror Bowl Movie Awards, Silver Award at Los Angeles Animation Film Festival, and Honorable Mention at Santiago Horror. Inspired by the likes of Jay Reatard, The Damned, and Royal Trux to name a few, NOBRO are unafraid to wear their influences on their sleeve. They cut their teeth on the road with bands like FIDLAR, PUP, and Charly Bliss, and more recently played their biggest venues to date on an arena tour with Alexisonfire and The Distillers. Call them punk rock if you like, but its long-held perceptions are just some of the things NOBRO are here to challenge — in the loudest and most exciting way possible. We want to hear from you! Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing Edwin Raphael over Zoom video! Edwin Raphael shares his new single “Time to Sink” off his forthcoming EP Staring at Ceilings due out February 26th via Dine Alone Records. The track begins softly, advanced by layered textures of peaceful vocals, sharp horns, refined guitars, and crisp drums. “Time to Sink” embraces stillness even when life continues to shift back and forth with light. In December, Edwin Raphael shared his single "Sea of Things" accompanied by its music video. On “Sea of Things” Edwin gives off Jeff Buckley vibes by bearing the same soulful intensity. It's a gorgeous, striking piece of work attributed to Edwin’s innate talents and sheer efficiency with instrumentation. On the narrative front, “Sea of Things” is an ode to existence and dissociation catalyzed by anxiety. “Sea of Things” is a testament to the chaotic and often times, perplexing nature of the ocean and of living without control. This past fall, Edwin released his first single off the EP “Mild Sanity (feat. Juletta).” Deeply absorbing and incredibly cathartic all at once, Edwin’s languid vocals and atmospheric melodies take listeners’ minds outside the cruelties of the world’s relentless wreckage. “Mild Sanity” is also elevated by NYC pop singer-songwriter Juletta’s ethereal cadence. The track was lauded by Under The Radar, American Songwriter, EARMILK, Culture Collide, Indie Shuffle, and was included on Spotify’s Folk & Friends playlist and NPR’s New Music Friday playlist.Staring at Ceilings is a 5-song EP produced with Marcus Paquin (Arcade Fire, The National, Local Natives) that reflects the spectrum of human indulgence and the cost of our anxieties.More Info:“You can't win if you don't play” is a quote that lives within singer-songwriter Edwin Raphael. Ditching a career path carved out by his father, Edwin is headstrong on finding his own way in a world no longer concerned with archaic traditions. The 25-year-old artist, living in Montreal, Canada, uprooted from Dubai, creates music instilled with spiraling emotion, which resonates on both the shattered and enriching moments in life.Edwin released his debut LP Will You Think of Me Later? in 2019. Prior to that, he released a pair of EPs—Ocean Walk in 2015 and Cold Nights in 2017. With over 14M+ cumulative streams spanning ~175,000 monthly listeners, he’s been featured on Spotify’s New Music Friday Canada, indie pop & chill, Indie Chillout, Lush + Ethereal, Chill Singer-Songwriter, and Folk Favourites playlists. We want to hear from you! We had the pleasure of interviewing The Dirty Nil over Zoom! The Dirty Nil is an alternative rock band of three including Luke Bentham for the vocals and lead guitar, Ross Miller for the bass guitar, and Kyle Fisher for the drums. This Canadian native band won in 2017 garnering the Juno Award for Breakthrough Group of the year. It was during high school when the band was formed and naming it The Dirty Nil. It was the year 2006 when they made it official and started working together as a band. They released their premier debut single titled Fuckin’ Up Young in early 2011 and took that opportunity to tour in North America being part of different sets, gigs, and festivals. Because of the continuous progression of the band’s career, it was further followed by a couple of singles and EPs and a full-length debut album titled Higher Power in the year 2016. As their fan base grew over the years, the demand for their music grew further, and engaged in Minimum R&B releasing EP tracks and singles in 2017. Master Volume, The Dirty Nil’s second studio album was released produced by Dine Alone Records in 2018 in which their teaser was a single titled Bathed in Light. With their most recent project, the band announced in August of 2020 that they will be releasing a new album in early 2021 named Fuck Art. https://open.spotify.com/artist/2mGENPk4M4jtaf5D7fDi98https://www.instagram.com/thedirtynil/?hl=enhttps://www.facebook.com/thedirtynil/https://twitter.com/thedirtynil?s=20We want to hear from you! Artist Sam Coffey and The Iron Lungs Album SAM COFFEY & THE IRON LUNGS TALK 2 HER TOUGH VOICEMAIL JUDY PRESSURE I: RAGNAROK II: TEENAGE RELEASE III: PHD YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE NICE Published Jul 20, 2017 Genre ROCK Embed It's now possible to embed this First Play on your own blog or website. Click here to learn more. Advertisement By Andrea Gin Editor’s note: lyrics contain profanity. When Toronto power-pop band Sam Coffey & the Iron Lungs started working on their second album, they decided it was time to finally go in and record in a proper studio. Prior to this, the six-piece had been taking a mostly DIY approach to its recordings, which included a stream of singles and the 2014 LP Gates of Hell. For this new self-titled release, the band not only found a studio, but also hired producer Alex Bonenfant (Metz, Crystal Castles) and signed to Dine Alone Records for its release. "Recording in a real studio for the first time with an excellent producer like Alex is a very big part of why this album is any good at all,” Sam Coffey wrote via email. “Some of the songs have been around for a long time, and we recorded this album three different times before we went into the studio with Alex at Dreamhouse. We took our time to get it right." The effort paid off. The songs on this self-titled release are not only well-crafted, but infused with an old-school party-rock spirit that is hard to resist. It’s an effort that certainly makes one thing clear: this is a band that loves its '70s power pop. - CBC Music

New Swears is a rock ‘n’ roll band from Ottawa, Ontario. Formed in 2012, the band consists of four men who claim their names are Scru Bar, Sammy J Scorpion, Beej Eh, and Nick Nofun. In the summer of 2017, Dine Alone Records released their dynamic, infectious, punk-infused power-pop album, And the Magic of Horses, and New Swears have been touring wherever possible since. They recently joined me at a studio inside of CFRU 93.3 FM in Guelph for an extensive chat about pretty much nothing at all. Literally, nothing. We discussed nothing. Usually on the show, there’s something. This is absolutely nothing. Was it fun? Sure. Sponsored by Pizza Trokadero, the Bookshelf, Planet Bean Coffee, and Grandad's Donuts.

The band have just signed a deal with Dine Alone Records for the release of the effort, as well as a new EP for their song “Exile“, which will hit stores this weekend.   HOUSECLEANING/LISTENER QUESTION First race of the season is in the books “John and Kyle, Great to hear a new episode guys! My favorite show to date for sure. A question I've had for you guys that I've been wanting to ask for a while is whether or not either of you actually listen to music when putting in miles on the bike? I definitely refrain from plugging in when riding singletrack most importantly due to just being aware of other trail users, but when it comes to gravel or road riding, are tunes a necessary component for your training? Finally, thanks for the tip on Achilles! Super sweet stuff. Take care guys. Grant”   RECORD REVIEW World Be Free – 'The AntiCircle' Released: February 5 2016 – Revelation Records World Be Free's story began in the fall of 2014, when Scott Vogel (Terror, Buried Alive), Joe Garlipp (Envy), Andrew Kline (Strife), and Sammy Siegler (Judge, CIV, Rival Schools) met monthly to write classicinfluenced, melodic and positive hardcore. All of this developed without a label, budget or any mention to the outside world. When Siegler scored some recording time at Hurley, they flew in Arthur Smilios (Gorilla Biscuits, CIV) to cover on bass and hustled into the studio. Vogel and Terror bandmate Nick Jett then tracked vocals at Jett's studio, passing the ball to Walter Schreifels (Rival Schools, Quicksand, Gorilla Biscuits) for one final guest spot. With their album finished and its release fast approaching, Top 5 – Primal Reaction Records. Something about these 5 records speaks to that dark place in your soul. Pure raw aggression and power..   UNBROKEN – Life Love Regret – 1994 New Age Records Life. Love. Regret. is everything that hardcore is. It is the heart, the soul, the sound, and the attitude. The music is loud and in your face, but most importantly, passion is put at the top. This album is a monument by a monolithic band. From the crushing riff and sinister notes at the beginning of "D4" to the ending feedback in the nine minute "Curtain."   Breather Resist – Only In The Morning – March 25, 2003 Deathwish Inc Breather Resist formed in 2002 and recorded 8 songs, 4 of which were on handmade demos. These 8 songs became their first EP, "Only in the Morning", released on Deathwish, Inc.. Their first LP, Charmer, was released on Jade Tree Records in October 2004, having been produced by Kurt Ballou. In December 2005, lead singer Steve Sidoni left the group; Buried Alive – Death Of Your Perfect World – April 20, 1999 Victory Produced by Steve Evetts at Trax East Studios. It is the band's only album with Jesse Muscato on drums.   CURSED – I – February 23, 2005 Deathwish Inc Formed in 2001 a year after the breakup of The Swarm aka Knee Deep in the Dead. Known for their trademark nihilistic and dystopian lyrical themes, stark classic horror imagery and loud, abrasive live shows. Integrity – Those Who Fear Tomorrow – 1991 Overkill Records Integrity's For Those Who Fear Tomorrow is a hardcore juggernaut that has lurked in infamy for over 15 years. Recorded in 1991, For Those Who Fear Tomorrow is often credited as on of the first true metalcore" albums. While hardcore crossover bands like the Cro Mags and Corrosion of Conformity had existed before Integrity, few were prepared for the world Integrity brought to life with their debut album. FTWFT's razor sharp metallic edges, driving hardcore verses, and gloomy breakdowns set a stage for one of hardcore's most messianic and charismatic front men: Dwid Hellion. The album has been issued in close to 10 different editions and formats. It has never received proper distribution or promotion, but it has survived: a truly bastardized child of hardcore, metal, and a darkness of the soul.   BUMPER MUSIC SEGMENTS Intro: Minor Threat   ‘Out Of Step’ News: UNBROKEN ‘D4’ Housekeeping: Breather Resist ‘Just Do It’ Record Review: World Be Free ‘Shake The Ghost’ Primal Records: Cursed ‘1974’ Outro: Integrity ‘Micha those who fear tomorrow’   FIND MBR Mountain Bike Radio Facebook Page Mountain Bike Radio on Twitter Mountain Bike Radio on Instagram Mountain Bike Radio on Pinterest

HITS: The first band we’re going to hear from have a no-nonsense name that confidently describes the caliber of songs they write. That band’s name is HITS. Having just celebrated their tenth anniversary as a band, they’ve lived more in that time than some bands would dare to imagine. With the twin guitar attack of Tamara Dawn and Stacey Coleman, vicious vocals from Dick Richards and solid backbone of Andy Buchanan and Gregor Mulvey, their live show effortlessly blow the minds of punters that come in contact with their extremely loud take on rock music. The latest record from HITS, 2014’s ‘Hikikomori’ was produced by legendary rock’n’roll figure Rob Younger, he of Radio Birdman and New Christs fame, and has been getting rave reviews from not only Australia, but Europe too. It was also longlisted for the 2014 Coopers Australian Music Prize. This particular set that we are about to listen to was captured at their 10th anniversary birthday show and is one of the finest documents of this bands live presence. Recorded & Mixed by Branko Cosic. Recorded at The Triffid on the 3rd of May, 2015. Zeahorse: Having played relentlessly for the last 5 years all over the east coast of Australia, Zeahorse have gained a reputation for being one of the best live bands around Australia. They were nominated for best live act in the 2013 FBi SMAC awards, and have supported many incredible acts such as The Black Angels, Them Crooked Vultures, Jello Biafra, The Mark of Cain and the Hard Ons. Their debut album Pools was released in 2013 to much critical acclaim, and went on to secure a North American release through Dine Alone Records in September last year. Many thanks to Harvey O’Sullivan from FBi Radio’s Live Feed for his assistance. Recorded & Mixed by Ben Moore @ Harvest Recordings Recorded at FBi Radio’s 10th Birthday Celebrations at Carriageworks, Sydney on the 8th of September, 2013. This is the first of our Best of CMW episodes, and I suppose this one could unofficially be called the Dine Alone Records round-up. Dine Alone is celebrating its 10 year anniversary this year, and as such, founder Joel Carriere anchored a special panel during the conference to talk about the ups and downs of the last decade in the label game. Mike caught up with him before the round table to talk shop, and it's a great interview. For musical artists, we've got both Monster Truck and Single Mothers on this weeks show - both blowing up, both Dine Alone bands. The former is working on the follow-up to 2013's hugely successful Furiosity while Single Mothers are still riding the attention surrounding their debut, Negative Qualities. We've also got the boys in Billy Talent, who may not be a Dine Alone band, but considering their history with the likes of Alexisonfire, Moneen, Cancer Bats, and the gang, could be considered extended family. Plenty more from CMW coming up. Enjoy!
