My guest on this episode is Stuart Ross. Stuart is a writer, editor, teacher, and self-described "small press guerrilla." Stuart is the author of over twenty books of poetry, fiction, and essays. He is the recipient of the 2019 Harbourfront Festival Prize and the 2010 Relit Prize for Short Fiction. His most recent works are The Book of Grief and Hamburgers, published by ECW Press in Spring 2022, and I Am Claude François and You Are a Bathtub, published by Anvil Press in the fall of 2022. The Book of Grief and Hamburgers recently won the Trillium Book Award, and Ross himself was the subject of a special tribute night put on by his adopted town of Cobourg, Ontario. Stuart and I talk about that tribute night, and the mix of delight and embarrassment he felt around the whole event, about what he calls his "neurotic" drive to keep starting new writing projects, and about how he identifies with the students he teaches in his poetry workshops. Author and editor Stuart Ross sits down with ReLit Award Winner Michael Blouin to talk about his new novel, I Am Billy the Kid , which imagines the life of the infamous gun fighter after he fakes his own death and heads to Canada in the company of his older brother Joseph. History tells us that the short and violent life of William Bonney, better known as Billy the Kid, ended at the hand of Pat Garrett on the moonless night of July 14, 1881. But I Am Billy the Kid tells a different story, straight from Billy himself. This revisionist history seen through the lens of a twenty-first century sensibility features the picaresque hero we thought we knew and the unexpected one that we don't; a fearless and determined young woman who is in no mood to be saved and would much prefer exacting her own revenge. Billy has been in an alcoholic haze since a failed attempt to escape notoriety by faking his own death. By 1915, his fame has only increased, and when word of a possible ruse leaks out, Billy finds himself once again on the run. Books are available from our friends at Perfect Books. Join Stephen Brockwell for a conversation with author, poet and editor Stuart Ross about his latest publication, The Book of Grief and Hamburgers, a poignant meditation on mortality. A writer friend once pointed out that whenever Stuart Ross got close to something heavy and “real” in a poem, a hamburger would inevitably appear for comic relief. In this hybrid essay/memoir/poetic meditation, Ross shoves aside the heaping plate of burgers to wrestle with what it means to grieve the people one loves and what it means to go on living in the face of an enormous accumulation of loss. Written during the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, shortly after the sudden death of his brother left him the last living member of his family and as a catastrophic diagnosis meant anticipating the death of his closest friend, this meditation on mortality ? a kind of literary shiva ? is Ross's most personal book to date. More than a catalogue of losses, The Book of Grief and Hamburgers is a moving act of resistance against self-annihilation and a desperate attempt to embrace all that was good in his relationships with those most dear to him. Hey folks! Had a great time last weekend with the return of live GritLit events. I was able to attend two of them, and everything felt all weirdly familiar and wonderful (and fairly anxiety-free...unlike the Judas Priest show I attended two weeks ago, but that's another story). For me though, the highlight was probably hanging with the cool GritLit folks afterward, fine people I haven't seen in a while. Oh, and demonstrating ska dancing for the table. I suppose, if nothing else, it will be easy to remind Heather O'Neill where she met me before. ALSO I have seen cover concepts for River, Diverted. I have my first blurb for it, too (holy hell is it a good one - but it's too early to share). October 2022! Today's show features the remarkable Stuart Ross. His newest is The Book Of Grief And Hamburgers, and it's excellent. Tune in!
Are you scaling up to exit your business or are you focused on scaling up to build a more sustainable business? Either way, don't miss Stuart Ross, author of The Scale Up Leader on this week's episode of The Melting Pot. Stuart is a business coach who started life as a buyer for Burton Arcadia group. From there he moved to Boots where he led a number of innovations such as launching their first website (and they were so cheap they wouldn't pay for the .com, only the .co.uk, and then subsequently spent a small fortune a few years later acquiring the .com, but that's another story.) He also launched the meal deal - something almost everyone on the highstreet has now, and he worked on the Boots Advantage Card.Stuart launched his consulting coaching business High Growth in 2012, and today he works with a range of clients across the UK and the US. He also features frequently in the news, talking about what it takes to build a scale up business. Scaling up is something he's so passionate about, he's written a book about it. Which is precisely what he discusses in this episode. So if you're wanting to grow and scale up your business, download and listen today. Today's show is part of a series of panel talks recorded at 2019's Fynefest—The annual festival held by Fyne Ales, at the home of their brewery and family farm in Cairndow, Scotland. In this episode we debate about one of my favourite subjects—cask ale—and why it means so much to both British brewing traditions, and to modern beer culture. Our panelists in this session were Stuart Ross of Magic Rock Brewing Company, Abbeydale Brewery's Laura Rangeley and Doreen Joy Barber of Cloudwater. Plus, there's a special guest appearance at the start from Cloudwater's Jay Krause while we waited for Doreen to find the venue, where we hosted these talks.Fyne Ales have been huge friends and supporters of Pellicle since day one, and it was a privilege to be invited to host these talks. We were gutted not to be able to return to the Glen in 2020 due to the pandemic, but are already relishing returning in 2021 with gusto. Hello everyone and welcome to this week's edition of the podcast. With the horrendous storms we've had over the past few weeks, I thought we'd take a look at how it's impacted golf courses in the UK and so I had a conversation with Stuart Ross at Brecon Golf Club in south Wales. Water is the most essential ingredient of golf course preparation. Without it the turf won't grow. However, two much of it can lead to catastrophic consequences. In a year that's seen record wildfires ravaging Australia, in the UK the winter has been one characterised by seemingly nonstop rain. In his regular weather blog, Headland Amenity's Mark Hunt identified how the last 5 ½ months have recorded an average of 81% wet days. Eight out of every 10 days have seen rain since the beginning of September. Storm Ciara was dubbed “the biggest storm this century” by the Met Office and was quickly followed by Storm Dennis, bringing further high winds and torrential rain. Ciara hit the north west of England and north Wales hardest, bringing almost 180mm of rain to Honister Pass in Cumbria, while just a week later Dennis dumped an additional 158mm of rainfall on south Wales. Unsurprisingly, inland courses all over the United Kingdom, particularly those constructed besides rivers, were badly hit by flooding. This meant entire holes were submerged and clubs have been left counting the cost of the recovery operation. At Mond Valley above the River Tawe in Wales, the golf club revealed it would close ‘indefinitely' while the clean-up operation got underway. At nearby Brecon Golf Club, Stuart Ross is the only full-time member of the greenkeeping team at the 118-year-old nine-hole venue. The James Braid-designed course sits beside the River Usk in an area that was heavily hit by Storm Dennis, with further flood warnings on the way. Stuart took some time out from the clean-up operation to shelter under some trees and talk to me about how he's coping with this year's storms and the hard work he's having to do to get the course playable. Musical zombies rise from the dead to sing an evening of ‘50’s pop standards. Let me try that again. On February 4, 1964, The Plaids, an eastern Pennsylvania-based vocal quartet, were headed for a major gig at the Fusel-Lounge at the Harrisburg Airport Hilton when their cherry red Mercury was broadsided by a bus full of Catholic schoolgirls. The girls, who escaped unscathed, were on their way to see the Beatles on The Ed Sullivan Show. The Plaids went on to that Great Performance Hall in the Sky… or at least the green room of the Great Performance Hall in the Sky. Rather than spend an eternity waiting to “go on”, they make their way back to earth to give the concert that never was. That is the plot upon which Stuart Ross and James Raitt hang twenty-four musical standards in their very popular jukebox musical Forever Plaid, running through March 3 at the Lucky Penny Community Arts Center in Napa. Frankie (F. James Raasch), Sparky (Scottie Woodard), Jinx (Michael Scott Wells), and Smudge (David Murphy) were high school friends who dreamed of musical glory. Following the path created by ‘50’s versions of what we now refer to as “boy bands” (The Four Lads, The Four Aces, The Crew-Cuts, etc.), they formed The Plaids and specialized in four-part harmonies. And that’s what you’ll hear over the Michael Ross-directed show’s one hour and 45-minute running time. “Three Coins in the Fountain”, “Sixteen Tons”, “Chain Gang”, and “Love is a Many Splendored Thing” are just some of the 20-plus songs performed by the crisply costumed gents (courtesy Barbara McFadden) with matching choreography by Woodard. Music is nicely performed by a trio consisting of music director Craig Burdette (keyboards), Quentin Cohen (drums), and Alan Parks (bass). The guys are good with each one getting a solo shot to go along with the group work. Their stock characters (the shy one, the funny, etc.) banter with each other between numbers and amusingly engage with the audience. The comedic numbers are particularly well done with the show’s highlight being a three-minute recreation of The Ed Sullivan Show, though it helps to have some familiarity with that show. The same can be said for the music. Yes, it’s a trip down memory lane, but if toe-tapping, hand-squeezing and perpetual grinning are any indications, Forever Plaid hits all the right notes with an audience willing to make the trip. ’Forever Plaid' plays through March 3rd at the Lucky Penny Community Arts Center in Napa. Thursday evening performances are at 7pm; Fridays and Saturdays are at 8pm. There’s a Sunday matinee at 2pm. For more information, go to luckypennynapa.com
Hop Forward: Getting You Ahead in the Brewing and Beer Business
Magic Rock Brewing have been at the forefront of the UK craft beer scene for eight years. Drawing inspiration from the American market, founder and director Richard Burhouse set to work building a brewery alongside head brewer, Stuart Ross (formerly of Kelham Island Brewery and Crown Brewery in Sheffield) to develop one of the leading modern breweries in the town of Huddersfield, West Yorkshire. Leaving behind the family business selling precious stones and minerals - hence the name, Magic Rock - the brewery have played a significant role in the growth of the UK’s beer industry, and currently export to over 25 countries worldwide. Their tap room and beer festival, Seshfest - a festival that focuses on pouring beers that are 4.5% ABV and under - are travelled to from far and wide by consumers all wanting to try a bit of the magic. Richard himself is warm, welcoming and friendly, and is as much as a beer fan as he is an entrepreneur. In this episode, we sit down with the Managing Director of Magic Rock Brewing to discuss every from beers, brands and business, and find out what’s in store for Magic Rock in 2019. The county of Yorkshire has more breweries per capita than anywhere else in the UK. And though it’s home to buzzing city hubs such as Leeds and Sheffield, much of the brewing landscape is to be found within the county’s rural environment and smaller towns. It’s home to traditional breweries such as Theakston’s, Timothy Taylor, and Black Sheep as well breweries with a more modern outlook, such as Summer Wine and Rooster’s. Richard Burhouse, along with his brother Johnny and head brewer Stuart Ross, founded Magic Rock Brewing Company in the town of Huddersfield in 2010. Before the arrival of Magic Rock, Huddersfield already had a reputation for being a great beer town, as it was home to renowned pubs such as The Grove and The Sportsman. However, it was perhaps the arrival of Magic Rock, and subsequently its taproom in 2015, which really put the town on the national beer map. As well as being inspired by Yorkshire’s real-ale heritage, Burhouse was also fascinated by what was happening in the U.S., and has spent plenty of time researching beer in the States. The influence of West Coast breweries such as Stone, Green Flash, and Russian River is immediately apparent in his beers, such as High Wire Pale Ale and Cannonball IPA. Not content to rest on its laurels, however, Magic Rock is constantly adapting its brewing processes to keep pace with trends. The past 12 months has seen them release several New England-inspired limited release IPAs, some of which have been collaborations with the likes of Cloudwater and Other Half. At the same time, Burhouse is trying to balance his brewery in the local market by simultaneously offering a high quality, nicely priced range of cask ales. In this episode, we skip from topics such as pricing and quality issues, to the takeover of RateBeer, which has often showered plaudits on Magic Rock’s beers. We also speak briefly about the sold out Uppers & Downers London, where we’re super excited to have Magic Rock pouring a collab with Dark Woods Coffee this September. This episode was recorded in a working pub near my home in North London home, and as a result, there’s a couple occasions where there’s a little background noise. Thanks for your patience.

This week I'm looking at two of the CBS Electronics Ram Plus games, Tunnel Runner and Omega Race, as well as the Booster Grip controller! Thanks for your patience this week, and thanks again for the donations, it is greatly appreciated. I think I have settled on a mixer so I can record the sounds from the 2600 itself, and also, I think I may be able to use that to play the audio submissions live so you can hear me react to them. My current mixer is a Kitchen Aid, so that one won't work. Next episode will be about Sky Skipper and Tutankham by Parker Brothers, so if you have any feedback on those games or games I've already covered, please send it to 2600gamebygame@comcast.net, or 2600gamebygame@gmail.com.
