TED HOPE CEO, Fandor “Perhaps no film exec is better qualified to brainstorm ideas for saving indie films than Ted Hope” – Variety, 1/27/21 In June 2020, TED HOPE resigned as Co-Head of Movies at Amazon Studios, where he oversaw the prestige movies produced, developed and acquired by the company (Manchester by the Sea, The Salesman, The Big Sick, Cold War, amongst others) for over five years. Hope's 35-year career in the film business is defined by an innovative and inclusive approach, always operating from a deep love of cinema, its history, and recognition of its potential. Whether it's helping to launch Amazon Studios and their commitment to theatrical releasing, their foray into worldwide streaming titles, or introducing new voices and new approaches to new audiences from his independent film producing days, Hope champions diverse and bold voices from the world over. Prior to joining Amazon, Hope produced over 70 films, as well as co-founding and co-running the production companies Good Machine, this is that, and Double Hope Films. Ted's eye for directorial talent has helped launch the feature film careers of Ang Lee, Hal Hartley, Michel Gondry, Nicole Holofcener, and many others. His films have received numerous Academy Award nominations and a record three of them have won the Sundance Grand Jury Prize. His filmmaking memoir Hope For Film was published in 2014; the new expanded second edition came out in August of 2020. Ted currently enjoys a first look deal with Amazon Studios for his feature films.

Mike Lisk AKA AP Mike of THE BEST SHOW joins us once again and this time he's bringing Werner Herzog with him for AP MIKE'S HERZOG-A-MANIA!!! Mike first suggested doing a Herzog episode way back in our Noirvember 2024 episode (S3E15), but it took us over a year to get our most popular guest to discuss a German filmmaker so popular that he is now a meme--or even several of them. Rather than mine some obscure corner of Herzog's filmography--and there's a lot to mine--Mike goes straight for the heart (of darkness) with AGUIRRE WRATH OF GOD (1972)--the stoniest movie possible with Germans playing Spanish conquistadors and totally losing their shit both onscreen and IRL. In the title role we've got KLAUS KINSKI, a thoroughly terrible human being with an amazing face that is hard not to be captivated by--especially when you've been vaping Glitter Bomb with your new DaVinci EQ vaporizer all day. Look, the guy's been dead since 1991. We just want to enjoy the bastard's art. We don't want to make him Secretary of Health and Human Services or anything. And then to lighten things up, Cory chooses Les Blank's short film WERNER HERZOG EATS HIS SHOE (1980). And SPOILER: Werner Herzog does eat his shoe, although it was simmered in duck fat and hot sauce by the legendary Alice Waters of Chez Panisse in Berkeley not that helped very much. Werner ate his shoe as part of a bet with Errol Morris, so we also talk a bit about Morris's GATES OF HEAVEN (1978) but not so much that we can't feature that masterpiece in a future episode. Both Herzog movies and GATES OF HEAVEN are on Criterion Channel + AGUIRRE is also streaming on Fandor, Tubi, Pluto, Roku, and whole bunch of other places. BREAKING: AP Mike also tells us how he got kicked off of Facebook and Instagram for "selling drugs," and he gives us the lowdown on his new Patreon BEER BUDDIES where he and Tom Scharpling drink terrible beer. Plus we speculate on the end of social media, and Bob pays tribute some really cool friends who died recently. You can follow Mike Lisk on X (his only social media outlet) at @APMike, and please check out his new Patreon show BEER BUDDIES: https://www.patreon.com/collection/2054068?view=expanded Hosts: Bob Calhoun & Cory Sklar. Philena and Greg are on assignment. NEXT EPISODE: Cory's Sleazy LA with HOLLYWOOD 90028 (1973) and FORBIDDEN ZONE (1980) with special guest star writer, producer and movie geek extraordinaire Marc Edward Heuck. For their Audience Interrogation cycle  "Close Up" episode, Emilio, Julian and Madeline hit record and explore a genre that they are, admittedly, not as familiar with: Found Footage Films.  They are joined by writer/director/teacher/musician Shaun Seneviratne, a fellow cinephile whose been historically lukewarm on Found Footage films, but enthusiastic to dive in and open minded to the ways this filmmaking style can tell unique, cinematic stories.  The group selects three representative films from different eras.  First, they unpack 1999's 'The Blair Witch Project', considered the codifier of the genre, and note how the film balances a growing sense of unease with naturalistic, improvised acting and dialogue.  Then they discuss Patrick Brice's 2014 film 'Creep', its unavoidable connection to mumblecore, and the ways it intentionally plays with long-standing horror tropes.  They complete the conversation digging into 'Searching', Aneesh Chaganty's 2018 screen life thriller that concerns itself with the finding of footage, and manages to capture emotion and intention through computer use in surprisingly effective ways.  Shaun Seneviratne can be found and followed on the socials at thebrownshaunHis feature film 'Ben and Suzanne: A Reunion in 4 Parts' is streaming now on Fandor and available for rent on digital.   If you enjoy our podcast, please rate and review us on your podcast platform of choice.  This really helps us find new listeners and grow!Follow us on IG and TikTok: @sleeplesscinematicpodSend us an email at sleeplesscinematicpod@gmail.comOn Letterboxd? AP Mike from THE BEST SHOW joins us once again for our #Noirvember episode and he's bringing Humphrey Bogart with him. Mike has chosen two wildly different takes on the Bogart persona from two of Hollywood greatest directors. First, it's the classic mystery that made Bogie a star with THE MALTESE FALCON from first-time director John Huston in 1941. Bogart is San Francisco private dick Sam Spade in this veritable blueprint for all the detective noir that followed it. Bogie is backed by an amazing cast with Mary Astor as femme fatale Brigid O'Shaughnessy; Petter Lorre as Joel Cairo; Sydney Greenstreet making his film debut at 62 years old as Kaspar Guttman; and Elisha Cook, Jr. playing shifty thug Wilmer Cook. All of these characters are on an existential quest the big, black bird--the stuff that dreams are made of--and several of them will do anything to get it. Then, Bogart goes grim dark in Nicholas Ray's IN A LONELY PLACE (1950). Bogie plays Dixon "Dix" Steele, a hasbeen Hollywood script writer with severe anger management issues. Dix is dragged in for questioning after Mildred, the hat-check girl he took back to his apartment, turns up murdered, and Bogie's wise-cracking ways take on an air of extreme menace as he jokes his way through the police interrogation. His neighbor, Laurel Gray played by Noir princess Gloria Grahame, falls for him despite the allegations because she saw that he didn't leave with the victim. But as Dix grows more violent and domineering, she, and the audience, start to question all that we've seen. Mike details the differences between the movie and the novel that it's based on. PUBLIC VERSION. Filmmaker Pete Ohs (JETHICA, YOUNGSTOWN) joins Adam, Joe, and Arwen to discuss his career journey and his extremely unique approach to filmmaking. From developing his own cinematic style through making videos with friends at 15 years old… to how working as an editor, a cinematographer, and a producer on various TV, short film, and feature film productions helped inform his approach to directing… to how the experience of making his first feature film (EVERYTHING BEAUTIFUL IS FAR AWAY) through the traditionally structured filmmaking process made him realize just how much he preferred the looser, more organic process that he imparted back when he was first making videos with friends as a teenager strictly for the love of making them… to how he has returned back to his approach to filmmaking using a skeleton crew of friends and writing the story as a group and as they shoot as opposed to starting with a traditional completed screenplay that the team follows… to why he prefers to start each of his productions with no set expectations… Pete's uncommon and particular storytelling process is certainly one that will make aspiring filmmakers think outside of the box and reconsidering how they themselves approach independent filmmaking. Pete's latest film JETHICA is currently streaming on Fandor and is also available digitally.

We were very excited to talk to the guy (forgot to ask his name) behind the blog christmasunderground.com, which is currently on its 10th year. People that know Brandon and I know we love Christmas music, though we tend toward Culturcide, The Frogs, and a guy impersonating Randy Newman performing "All I Want For Christmas Is You" on YouTube that got DMCA'd a few years back and now is impossible to find (outside of my hard drive). Jennifer likes the Sufjan Stevens albums and I'm actually not sure what all else. But she's a real Christian, so, there's that. But today we got to talk about the unfathomable depths of original Christmas music available on Bandcamp, Soundcloud, MySpace, and countless CD compilations and albums from the last 20+ years. We're not even touching on the history of R&B and novelty 7"s, the original run of classic records, the local music from nearly every industrialized nation, and so on. There is so much fucking Christmas music out there. If you want to know more about that, check out the documentary our guest mentions, Jingle Bell Rocks! The link will take you to JustWatch, which lists everywhere it's available to rent or stream (I signed up for a free trial of Fandor to see it). Christmas Underground focuses more on the sincere, indie side of things. There's a new mix posted a few days before Christmas each year and 50+ posts about his assorted finds leading up to that. He even touches on some new standards brewing in the underground that even I wasn't familiar with (most notably, So Much Wine by Handsome Family). Listen to the episode and when you're done check out the following links to Christmas Underground to hear and learn more about his favorites. Born in 2000 (Ásgeir) and 1998 (Anton), they met when they were little through their parent's friendship. One evening when they were bored at a dinner party, they looked to the laptop to kill their time with iMovie and after some experimentation they quickly found that filmmaking was what they were meant to do. After High School they went different paths. Anton moved to the U.S to study filmmaking at The New York Film Academy whilst Ásgeir went on to make a web series for the National Television in Iceland. While Anton was abroad, Ásgeir wrote “Come to Harm'' and when Anton came back to Iceland the first thing on their minds was finding a way to produce it. Ásgeir looked to his old schoolmates who were more than happy to help work on the film. He lives in Washington, DC with his his lovely wife and their amazing dog, Zoe.Leslee Scallon got her start by moving to Hollywood at nineteen from a small town, where she literally went to a three room schoolhouse. After that small start, she did receive a DramaLogue Best Actress Award, as well as the honor of accepting that award on the same stage as Shirley MacLaine. Similar to Michael, however, she found producing and writing to be a true love, especially after the sage advice of the late Carrie Fisher, “get behind the camera, it's more fun there.” Together Leslee and Michael have produced and directed many shows, including the THALIANS, working with amazing legends such as the late Debbie Reynolds and Carrie Fisher; Dick Van Dyke; Shirley MacLaine amongst others. Their first feature INDEMNITY was the catalyst for DWF and has made for tremendous opportunities of working with amazing creative minds and visionaries. Leslee has been the key moderator of the Industry Panels and “Chats With” series of talks done at the festival, as well as asked to be on panels for her expertise in navigating the film festival world. She lives in Studio City with her lovely daughter, Jocelyn.
