The mighty ALL OUT WAR has a brand new album "Celestial Rot" available now on Translation Loss Records, so I caught up with vocalist Mike Score to chat about the new album, record collecting, inspiration, scars and much more
Dreams of Consciousness Podcast Episode 264 features an interview with Mike Score of All Out War. As a hesher who discovered hardcore in the mid-Nineties, I've always had a soft spot for All Out War. They were one of the first bands I saw at CBGB's, and their mix of classic thrash, death metal, and New York Hardcore represented a thawing of relations between longhairs and hardcore kids, presaging the "metalcore" era that was on the horizon. I spoke with vocalist Mike Score about what the band had been up to since the last time he was on the podcast, and how Covid lockdowns changed the way they write songs. We also discussed how the latest All Out War album Celestial Rot ended up being their shortest, and why they decided to record the album themselves. My thanks again to Mike for speaking with me, and to you for listening. Mike Score is Lead Vocalist, Rhythm Guitarist and a founder member of the band, A Flock of Seagulls. The band was one of the most influential of the 1980's and has shaped much of today's electronic music. Mike was a hairdresser in Liverpool until in 1978, when he formed his first band. When this disbanded, he founded A Flock of Seagulls, with his brother Ali Score(Drums), Paul Reynolds (Lead Guitar) and Frank Maudsley (Bass). Mike was now vocalist and played keyboard, guitar and this new line up began relentlessly playing in local bars and venues. This paid off, as they eventually got rewarded with a record contract. Mike brought the band a unique New Romantic style, infusing futuristic notes through pioneering work with synthesisers, experimental vocal tones and space age costumes to create their eccentric image. Mike was also best known for his signature, trademark haircut. Their self-titled debut album, ‘A Flock of Seagulls', was released in 1982. The album received a lot of attention, and achieved international success. Their follow up album, ‘Listen', was released in 1983, and the band went on to an extensive world wide touring regime, playing shows alongside bands like The Psychedelic Furs, The Cars, The Police and The Fixx. The eventually drifted apart and band broke up, following mixed reviews of their subsequent albums, ‘The Story of a Young Heart' and ‘Dream Come True'. When he decided to reform the band again in 1988, the other members declined to join him. Score performed and toured A Flock of Seagulls with an alternative line up. In 1995 he released the album ‘The Light at the End of the World' which unfortunately did not perform very well commercially, and saw the band fall away again for a while.. In 2013, Score indicated that he had started a solo career and planned to release a solo album followed. These plans were delayed by the theft of the van containing Score's equipment, clothing and hard drives with the album tracks on. On 1 March 2014, Score released ‘Zeebratta', his first studio album. It was announced in 2018, that the original four members of the band would come together to record a new album, featuring the Prague Philharmonic Orchestra. The album ‘Ascension' followed, and was to be their first studio recording since 1984. They got together again for another album, ‘Inflight (The Extended Essentials)', this time reworking their original hits from the 1980's, but once again this reunion was short lived. Mike Score is currently working on various solo projects, and he still tours and performs regularly with his band, spending time in both Liverpool and Florida. This episode originally aired on Jan. 10th, 2017 Steve Cooper talks with singer Mike Score. Mike formed A Flock Of Seagulls with his brother Ali in Liverpool in 1979. By 1981, with the addition of Frank Maudsley and Paul (Reno) Reynolds, the classic line up was complete. With being the first band signed to Jive Records and (BeBop Deluxe guitarist) Bill Nelson and (Gong bassist, OMD and Teardrop Explodes producer) Mike Howlett at the production helm the third single, I Ran from A Flock of Seagulls' 1982 eponymous debut, became a worldwide hit charting at number 1 in Australia and Top 10 in the US. The album achieved similar acclaim, winning a Best Rock Instrumental Grammy Award for the song D.N.A.. More success, including the UK Top Ten smash Wishing (If I Had A Photograph Of You) from their second album Listen in 1983 and The More You Live, the More You Love from 1984's The Story of a Young Heart followed as they became one of the darlings of MTV. Unfortunately, personnel problems forced the original band members apart in 1986. Since then he continues taking a current Seagulls line up on the road and is working on his second solo album. A Flock of Seagulls lead singer Mike Score guests on the Fake Show with host Jim Tofte...enjoy!!!
Following up on their 2018 their "Ascension" album, the band return with 'Say You Love Me', the lead single from their new album, the second installmentof their Orchestral Hits opus. 'String Theory' includes 11 new recordings of some of their classic hits and fan favorites. The 'Say You Love Me' single comes with a eight different versions, remixes and a music video. The track is full to the brim of soaring strings, uplifting grooves and widescreen scope. Mikes positive message in the vocals knitting the new recording together with aplomb. Remixes are both of the 80s style "extended" variety and also newly reproduced versions, with Soda Pimps offering a electronic diversion on the track. A Flock Of Seagulls may well be known for their bizarrely teased haircuts as much as their hit single "I Ran". A Flock Of Seagulls were one of prime movers in the 80's new wave era. Growing out of the synth-heavy and ruthlessly stylish new romantic movement. Hairdresser Mike Score (lead vocals, keyboards) formed A Flock Of Seagulls with his brother Ali (drums) and fellow hairdresser Frank Maudsley (bass) in 1980, adding guitarist Paul Reynolds several months later.. "Telecommunication" became an underground hit in Euro-disco and new wave clubs. The band signed a major-label contract with Jive by the end of the year, and their eponymous debut album appeared in the spring of 1982. "I Ran (So Far Away)" was released as the first single from the album, and MTV quickly picked up on its icily attractive video, which featured long shots of Mike Score and his distinctive, cascading hair. The single climbed into the American Top Ten, taking the album along with it. In the UK, "I Ran" didn't make the Top 40, but "Wishing (If I Had a Photograph of You)" reached number ten later that year; in America, that single became a Top 40 hit in 1983, after "Space Age Love Song" peaked at number 30. "Wishing" was taken from the group's second album "Listen" in 1983. The band released 1984's "The Story of A Young Heart" which fielded the hit "The More You Live, The More You Love". A Flock Of Seagulls are famous for their music but also famous for their references in popular culture from TV (Ross's Haircut in Friends), Computer Games ("I Ran" was the standout track on Grand Theft Auto Radio), Film (The band and haircut are referenced in Pulp Fiction, X-Men and The Wedding Singer) . This cemented the bands reputation and brought the band to a whole new legion of fans. In 2003, the original line-up of Mike, Ali, Frank and Paul reunited for a one-off performance on the VH1 series Bands Reunited. In September 2004, they reformed again and did a brief tour in the United States. From 2004 to 2021 Mike was as busy as ever touring the band around the world. In 2018 the band appeared on record together for their "Ascension" album. The original members all appear on record together for 'String Theory'.

Recorded Live from The Franklin Music Hall in Philadelphia from THIS IS HARDCORE Fest 2019 - The one and only Mike Score. Vocalist for All Out War. We sat down amongst the chaos of the festival to talk about the new record, "Crawl Among The Filth" which dropped the day we recorded this on Unbeaten Records. We go back to L'Amour in Brooklyn and the early days of the band. We touch on the state of the world along with his profession when he's not screaming about the apocalypse. Mike is a great guy and his band is one of the most consistent bands in heavy music. He also has a side project that we speak on called "Below The Frost"with his wife, who was a member of Starkweather. I hope you enjoy this chaotic episode followed up by several of Mike's favorite AOW songs!

All Out War is a badass band from upstate New York that has been playing crushing metallic hardcore since 1991. Just off the heels of Kerrang magazine deeming their 1998 breakthrough "For Those Who Were Crucified" a classic by Kerrang magazine, the band released a killer new album "Crawl Among The Filth." We spoke with vocalist Mike Score about everything from the new album to some of the earliest tapes he purchased as a kid. Enjoy!
Here is the 92nd installment of the Dreams of Consciousness podcast, featuring an interview with Mike Score of seminal metallic hardcore band All Out War. My history with All Out War goes back to the fall of 1997, when I saw the band performing at a Sunday matinee at CBGB's. I purchased their first album Truth In The Age Of Lies soon after. Their style owed as much to German thrash as it did New York Hardcore, and was one of the earliest examples of what became known as "metalcore". I spoke to Mike over Facebook Messenger. We discussed All Out War's history, their place in the hardcore and metal scenes, and their upcoming album Crawl Among The Filth. Mike also walked me through the creation of their second album, For Those Who Were Crucified. My thanks to Mike for speaking with me, and to you for listening. TRACKLIST: "Resist"/"Truth in the Age of Lies" taken from the album Truth in the Age of Lies "Gehenna Lights Eternal"/"Judas Always Crawls" taken from the album Crawl Among The Filth "Enemies of Creation"/"Redemption for the Innocent" taken from the album For Those Who Were Crucified

Steve Cooper talks with singer Mike Score.
