Alright, buckle up, because this episode is a goddamn BLAST! We're jumping into the sweaty, raw, and unapologetic world of From Parts Unknown. A couple of weeks back, I ditched the studio and infiltrated their practice space – think concrete floors, ripped posters, and the kind of energy that makes your eardrums vibrate before they even plug in. We talked everything: from their new bass player, the real stories behind their gritty lyrics, and how Ben wants to take a dump on the Orange mans stage. These dudes are the real deal, no frills, just pure, punk passion. But here's the kicker, folks. I managed to snag an exclusive. You're hearing it here FIRST. We're dropping the WORLD PREMIERE of their brand-spanking-new track, "On and On". This ain't hitting streaming platforms until TOMORROW, so consider this your VIP pass. It's a furious, anthemic banger that'll have you screaming along by the second chorus. Trust me, you'll be hitting replay.Follow The Austin Young Show:www.austinyoungshow.comMusic By:From Parts Unknown - Barrymore, Teddy Ruxpin, On and On.Hotcake Hand Grenade - Grape Soda The Austin Young Show theme song was created by The Fullstops*DISCLAIMER: I hereby declare that I do not own the rights to this music/song. This week on the podcast, I recorded out back at the legendary Three Links venue in Deep Ellum to sit down with StrateJacket, a high-energy pop-punk band hailing from the Bay Area. We discuss their journey, from recording with Green Day's engineer to sharing the stage with punk icons like The Offspring and Sum 41. Get ready for an exclusive look into the world of StrateJacket. "If you're not having a good time, what's the point?" SEO, social media presence, streaming numbers: these are all things in which musicians can become ensnared and with which musicians can become disenchanted if we let ourselves. In this episode, Emmeline sits down with Christían Thrailkill and Christian Nguyen of Dallas-based, optimistic rock band Low Key Colors to talk about how the band keeps joy alive as they increase engagement.Chris & Christian also discuss how the band formed, how it has evolved, and how they're planning a show on October 5th, 2024 at Three Links in Deep Ellum to honor their deceased bandmate, Nathan. To learn more about Low Key Colors, or to follow their musical journey, find them on YouTube or at their official website. Ah, Valentines Day. A day for awkward first dates, overpriced chocolates, and, apparently, falling head over heels in love... with ska. Brace yourselves, ska-natics, because we're about to rewind to that love-drunk day with the one and only Flip from Flip & The Combined Effort!Picture this: a microphone cradled in my nervous hands, a ska beat pulsing through the studio like a caffeine IV, and across from me... Flip. Not flipping burgers, mind you, but flipping the script on our understanding of ska's true depth. We're talking educators-turned-punk-rock-poets, dissecting the genre with more precision than a surgeon wielding a pogo stick. Then came the real mic drop: Flip's insights into the ska scene's rising stars. He namedropped bands faster than a kid at a candy buffet, each pick more surprising than the last. Forget your run-of-the-mill two-tone, we're talking ska infused with punk, ska with a Latin twist, ska that could make your grandma skank (not that I'd recommend it, Nana). So, tune in, skank out, and let Flip's words wash over you like a wave of checkered Vans. This interview's got more heart than a Hallmark greeting card and enough ska to fuel a thousand circle pits at Three Links. It's a love letter to the genre, a testament to its evolution, and a reminder that sometimes, the greatest love stories start with a wobbly skank and a slightly off-key trombone solo. Happy (belated) Valentine's Day, ska fans! Now go forth and spread the love, one pogo at a time.(Disclaimer: Pogoing at your own risk. It was a crazy weekend of metal in North Texas as Metallica rolled into town for their Takeover Weekend. Besides the two huge concerts at AT&T Stadium, there were events all over the metroplex. One of those was at our very own Three Links in Deep Ellum where our friend, Nick Russo, played a show […] The post Show 539 – Too Metal For Our Own Good appeared first on The Jerry Jonestown Massacre.
Our annual Christmas episode has become the place where we look back on the year in Oddcasting and this year was certainly delightful. We brought on a new co-host, Mike Duminiak, and continued our tradition of making meaningful and relevant episodes for our Odd Fellow brothers and sisters. This particular episode includes a greeting from Brother Torbjörn in Sweden, a Hanukkah message from Brother Michael in Virginia, a holiday message from past co-host Christopher McHale, and, for the first time ever, we have the honor and privilege of presenting a holiday message from the Honorable Michelle Heckart, Sovereign Grand Master. The Shoutout goes to a brand-new lodge in Italy, Resilienza No. 3 of Milan. Sit back, relax, fix a big mug of hot cocoa and enjoy the Christmas Episode!
This week we sit down at Dallas' own Three Links with bassist extraordinaire, Fatima Thomas. Fatima takes us on a journey through her early bass playing days and move to Texas. We learn her story, from happiness to heartbreak, and then on to a new chapter with HESS and Flickerstick. Fatima is a fighter and she's ready to take on whatever comes her way! instagram.com/fatimaplaysbass instagram.com/flickerstick_official instagram.com/caseyhe55
On this episode I get the pleasure of chatting with Felipe Rosales of Flip and the Combined Effort. Felipe and I met in person for the first time when we were seconds away from sweating in the pit at the Kill Lincoln, We are the Union, and The Slackers show. We spend some time chatting about that show, teaching (since we are both teachers), music, ska, and books. There is a moment where we get a little confused about the dates of his upcoming shows in relationship to when this show is coming out, so for clarification purposes, Flip and the Combined Effort are playing: June 20th in Denton, TX at Killer Tacos June 22nd in San Antonio, TX at The Starlighter June 23rd in Austin, TX at Flamingo Cantina July 21st in Dallas, TX at Three Links
My best friend Dan saw this band at Three Links in Dallas. “You should reach out to these guys” he said. I did. I'm glad I did. This is a recording of us talking to each other after I reached out…King Pari is comprised of Cameron Kinghorn and Joe Christensen. No sooner did they start this new band than Covid happened and did it's thing. I'm glad to say they persevered, and released their debut album. They are now working on their second one. All around, great dudes.Everything King Pari - click hereSunshine Video - click here
Psychedelic Panther Festival 2022 at Main At South Side. It was an absolute honor to be included in the first annual Psychedelic Panther Festival in Fort Worth Texas at M.A.S.S . In this episode we experiment with a new recording environment. Carefully positioned between a loud generator and a crowd of very talkative event patrons, we attempt to conduct multiple recordings with musicians in between sets. Hopefully the ambient noise isn't too annoying for the listeners. All things considered this was an incredible event. Joe Guzman did an excellent job putting together this festival with the help of Fort Worths artistic community. The turn out was far greater than anyone had anticipated and buy any metric Psycadelic Panther knocked it out of the park! A very sincere thank you to everyone that contributed to the success of this event. A special thank you to Ryan Higgs (Managing Partner) and the rest of the awesome staff at Main At South Side. Thank you to all of the wonderful vendors and the badass musicians that made this festival so well known to the public at large. Thank you to Jessica Waffles and Rene Gomez for covering the event so that we have a little more leverage for next years event. AND THANK YOU!!! To those of you in attendance, none of this would have been possible without the overwhelming support we received from the community. On a personal note: Thank you to Matthew Broyles, Trista Morris, and Joe Guzman for starting the conversation that got the Fort Worth Roots Podcast involved with this festival. Ryan Higgs, thank you for providing us with space at M.A.S.S so that we could interact with the public and be part of this badass event!!! After the lengthy intro our first segment is with our good friend and multiple repeat guest Lucas Peterson. Lucas made a cross country drive just to make it to this event and help out with this unique experience. Thank you homie! Segment two is with Jeffrey Chase Friedman who plays guitar and vocals for the local Fort Worth band "Uncle Toasty" as well as drums for "Mean Motor Scooter". Find information about this guest at : uncletoasty.bandcamp.com and on Facebook @yourtoast . Catch Jeffery with Uncle Toasty at Three Links in Deep Ellum, Thursday at 8pm July 14th. Segment three is with the two geniuses behind the mind blowing center stage art work and projection mapping visuals for the festival. John Thummel and James Benjamin Maker are a powerful pair of creators that really turned the stage into a place of magic and science. We will be adding a web site here for these guys as soon as they get theirs finalized. You guys made this event even more successful with your art. The panther head became a battle flag for us all. THANK YOU!!! Segment four is with our friend and creator of the Psychedelic Panther Festival Mr. Joe Guzman. Hard core dreamers with a strong sense of community are the ones that make awesome things like this possible. We need more people like you Joe!! Congratulations on the incredible success of year one. Cameron, Thomas, John, and Cole sit down ...and stand...one of them sat on the ground. We need more chairs for the next event. These guys were hilarious and light hearted and just fun to be around. They dominated on the outside stage right before this recording. Guys thank yall for your time. Looking forward to having yall on for a full episode in the near future. And I swear to god I am saying "Picnic LIGHTNING" and not "Lighting" but it really sounds like I'm talking about Coleman Lanterns. Find these guys online at: http://picniclightning.net/And on Facebook find them at: @picniclghtnng Our sixth and final segment closes out the show with some more odd conversation with Lucas Peterson that eventually ends up being a game of " Would You Rather". An interesting and unusual confluence has occurred where tattoo artists and Odd Fellowship have mixed, creating some interesting results. From some of the most famous tattoo artists like Oliver Peck and Luke Wessman, down to the average corner tattoo shop owner, the stunning, bold symbols of Odd Fellowship have called out to the tattoo community and brought them into our august fraternity. Their keen eye for visual communication has, in many cases, reinvigorated Odd Fellowship. With so much similarity between Odd Fellows and tattoo artists it's a natural overlap. In this episode we explore what makes Odd Fellowship so appealing to tattoo artists and why so many are drawn to our Order. Brother Shayne Simmons, of Lorraine #4 in Louisville, KY, joins Ainslie and Toby to dish about the earlier days of tattooing, share how each of them got inspired to join the Order, and discuss what each of them sees in Odd Fellowship as tattoo artists. The conversation meanders all over the place, including the idea of having Odd Fellows lodges set up recruiting displays at tattoo conventions. The Shoutout goes to Tarpon Springs Lodge #34 of Florida for their 130th anniversary celebration. Ainslie and Shayne both share their excitement for impending Degree Days—the first since the pandemic—and Toby talks about his upcoming trip to visit the Grand Sessions in Oregon and California. All that and an update on Bro. John Reitzer-Smith's efforts to support our distressed Brothers in Ukraine.

This is an episode in our weekly series titled 'Primary Source Tuesday.' Each Tuesday we have a reading from a particularly interesting historical item. Sometimes it's a historical tidbit that wasn't quite beefy enough to make a full column out of; other times, an especially interesting old newspaper article; frequently it's a short story from one of the frontier literary magazines that thrived in Oregon at the end of the 19th century. Today it's 'Three Links and a Jewel,' a fascinating short story by J.D. Hassfurther, which led me down an amazing late-Victorian rabbit hole of research on Theosophy, late-1800s socialism, the Progressive movement, women's clubs ... and the connection with the darkest elements of the racial-socialist movements of the mid-20th century ... download, if you dare, for an earful of my own special blend of history-inflected amateur sociology .... 'Three Links' was published in the December 1898 issue of Pacific Monthly magazine, a Portland-based literary magazine that was one of the precursors of Sunset Magazine. Oh yeah and here is a link to the show notes, including an image of the newspaper article quoted from in the story: http://offbeatoregon.com/assets-readings/2021/210420.p2104b.hassfurther-intro.pdf

Hey Listeners! Its your host Chief Swiftwater here, first off I'd like to say that portions of this episode were recorded before the pandemic. I interviewed David of The Casualties back in November after the totally killed it at Three Links. Let this interview remind you of how things used to be before we were quarantined. Obviously we need to all do our part to get the world back on track but as soon as its safe to go out to shows, we got to support the scene!!
