In this episode of Modern Producer Secrets, Adam Reifsteck sits down with composer Caleb Swift to delve into the intricacies of building a successful career in composing for TV and film.  A pivotal moment in Caleb's career was his association with Gargantuan Music, where his music was utilized in an ad for the largest crime-show crossover event of the year, the BBC Network Prime-Time Event "Casualty/Holby City". He discusses the importance of feedback from publishers and how it helped him refine his craft. This experience underscored the value of perseverance and continuous improvement in achieving success. Caleb also emphasizes the significance of building relationships with publishers and providing value to them, rather than directly approaching music supervisors. He likens this to forming trusted vendor relationships in any business. This approach helped him secure opportunities with top-tier publishers like Really Slow Motion Trailer Music, Hypersonic, and JDM, further elevating his career. Throughout the interview, Caleb highlights the competitive nature of the industry and the high standards required to succeed. He advises aspiring composers to focus on honing their craft, taking feedback constructively, and building strong professional relationships to navigate the complex landscape of music production for TV and film. Listeners will find Caleb's insights and experiences invaluable, providing a realistic and practical roadmap for anyone looking to transition from a side hustle to a sustainable career in production music. Producer & Host: Adam ReifsteckEdited in Descript. If you're struggling to make the money you want in your music production business, have you ever considered that the reason you're not getting the sales you want is…you're selling the wrong thing? Maybe it sounds crazy, but this is one of the biggest mistakes we see struggling music producers make!  They're so focused on what they WANT to sell, and what they THINK their audience needs, they create offers that completely miss the mark ...And they don't sell – because people don't want them.  The fact of the matter is, even if YOU know your sample pack or production service is the best thing that's happened to the world since indoor plumbing ...if your people don't clearly see the transformation and VALUE it offers – AND desire the hell out of it …it's like you're trying to make money selling empty brown paper bags.  No one's gonna buy – because they can't see “what's in it for them.” So how CAN you cut through all the confusion and noise, figure out what people really want, and create an irresistible offer that actually sells? In this episode, Cameron and Adam uncover creative ways to leverage your zone of genius so that you can get consistent and high-paying projects with better artists.Whether you are an up-and-coming producer or an established professional, our unrivaled mastermind community of like-minded music entrepreneurs can help you elevate your brand online so you can consistently attract higher quality artists who will pay premium prices for your production services. In this second installment of her Music Careers series, violinist/violist, teacher, and host Laurel Thomsen explores music careers and activities that require knowledge and skill in music, but not necessarily on one particular instrument. It's rare for even very talented musicians to be able to make a living at performance alone, so piecing together a variety of activities within our career is a great way to ensure our financial security, and stay passionate about everything we're doing. And even if we're not planning to make a career of music, we may find that being involved with music in ways beyond playing our instrument very fulfilling and supportive to our overall drive to keep music in our life.  ~ For more information and info about her performances, recordings, and teaching, please visit host Laurel Thomsen's website https://www.laurelthomsen.com To check out Laurel's Violin Geek Blog, a companion to the podcast, sharing tips, insight and inspiration since 2007, please visit https://www.laurelthomsen.com/violin-geek-blog If you have a violin, viola, fiddle, music biz, or practice related question or topic you'd like to have covered on the Violin Geek podcast or in the blog, have someone you'd like Laurel to interview, or have a   story or insight to share, please send Laurel an email at laurel@laurelthomsen.com. Whether or not we plan to make a career of music, this series will be relevant for everyone! If we keep at it, we all reach a point where we're ready to take our music beyond the practice room, but as one of Laurel's students recently asked: "What can I do with this violin besides become Hilary Hahn or TwoSet?" Thankfully, there are many more options, and hopefully something for everyone, including for those who enjoy being in the spotlight, those who prefer group dynamics, those who want to be self-employed, and those who'd prefer to not have to think too much about the business side of their musical activities. In this first installment of her Music Careers series, violinist/violist, teacher, and host Laurel Thomsen explores performance based roles that require us to be skilled on our particular instrument. In future episodes in this series, we'll explore options that will require knowledge and skill in music, but not necessarily on one particular instrument. As Laurel has found herself, piecing together a variety of activities within our career is a great way to ensure our financial security as musicians, and stay passionate about everything we're doing. Today I want to talk about something really important……this is going to get personal really fast, I am a recovering people pleaser.First, what is ‘people pleasing'? People-pleasing involves putting someone else's needs ahead of your own. People-pleasers are highly attuned to others and are often seen as agreeable, helpful, and kind. For years I called myself empathetic, I am just really intuitive to other people's feelings, it's like a gift I have. I just REALLY care about others, I am a nice person goddamn it! Okay whilst some of that is true it didn't explain why at the end of the day I felt so rubbish, exhausted and utterly alone.I mean I am giving so much to so many and here I am resenting it. This week on the podcast we are talking about How People Pleasing Destroys Creativity. You are NEVER being selfish for wanting to pursue your art. It is a natural and necessary part of being a human. Of being alive. So if you need permission please take this as the permission you need to take some time for yourself and your art because your time is so super precious. Start saying yes to you. Your music. Your work. Your creativity. Your love for yourself. Music is healing, it's loyal. When you start to give it the time and energy it really will look after you in the most beautiful and fulfilling ways!See you inside the Be Radical Make Music Facebook Group for more conversations and connections! Rosie xoxo
