Send us a textIt's a BRAND NEW episode of Bakotunes! I'm honored to welcome my guest Monique Powell of Save Ferris to the show! It was an opportunity I could not pass up and after a few tech delays, it finally happened. Monique and I go back to the early days of the band in Orange County, gigging alongside ska homies Reel Big Fish and more before getting swept up in the third wave ska craze and a hit single - a cover of Dexy's Midnight Runners 80s classic, "Come On Eileen"! That was followed with tours across the globe and back, in the van, and of course, tons of sweaty ska shows packed with sweaty, skankin' checkerboard kids. It was the nineties and it was a blast. Lots of fun facts and ska time warping! We also have classic Save Ferris music and their latest single, "Get Dancing!" that just dropped at all music outlets on 4/25. Enjoy! https://saveferris.com/**Episode features the songs "Come On Eileen," "Get Dancing", "The World Is New" by Save Ferris. Also contains excerpts from: "Orange County, CA (1976)", "MTV Skaturday", Save Ferris Honda Commercial, "Sid & Nancy", "Ferris Bueller's Day Off", "Teens React to 90s Ska Music".Sponsored by Chain Cohn Clark - Kern County's leading accident, injury, and workers' compensation law firm. Much of it we already have processes in place to take care of. City councils, county commissions and disgruntled residents are all commonplace enough and pose no real threat. Here are, however, a few different groups here who are unique. Myself and Mr. Frenezi are dealing with them as we speak. We will also rely on you to do your part. It would be wise for us to have these nagging issues taken care of by the time Mr. Fere and Mr. Howell arrive. For their sake and for ours.
This week on Beer Sessions Radio, Jimmy tunes into the Ska network with co-founders Bill Graham and Dave Thibodeau from Ska Brewing in Durango, Colorado. The gang will listen to Dave's and Bill's latest album about their brewing, growing, and drinking process. For the first track, we have the story of Bill and Dave. Growing up together by the Front Range of Colorado, the duo started home-brewing to Ska music in high school. They then moved to Durango partly to create the Ska Brewing Co. we now know, but mostly to ski. The second track is an intro to the three waves of Ska and their favorite bands like The Toasters and The Pietasters, who might be performing at their 27th anniversary this Labor Day Weekend.Track three and four are more complex, with Bill and Dave diving deeper into the company and their beers, as well as weed legalization in Colorado and the challenges it creates for local growers and brewers. Track five increases in tempo as the gang talks about home-brewing and the importance of enjoying the process. They also touch briefly on the words written on the lips of the cans with Jimmy's challenge for their next one. To end the show, track six takes us gardening and into Dave's backyard for a mini-lecture on how to grow carrots. No wonder this album is top 1 on Billboard right now!Heritage Radio Network is a listener supported nonprofit podcast network. Strange Tenants are an Australian based Ska band who've been around since the early 80's and are still kicking! Considered the Godfathers of Australian Ska, Strange Tenants have been bashing out their version of Jamaican Ska for the Aussie dance halls and are still going strong. I chat with Bruce Hearn, co-founder, lead singer and trumpet player of Strange Tenants in this interview. Bruce tells all the highs and lows of being in a band, skinheads, Jimmy Cliff and no management! These guys are hero's of mine so I jumped at the chance for an interview. They've recently released a new album and have had a book written about them by a devoted fan. If you like good music and Ska, then hunt them down!

Every morning, when I open my eyes, it is like I am joining a radio program already in progress. A song I may or may not have heard recently is playing in my head, on repeat, like some sort of Manchurian Candidate type instruction directing me to assassinate my own sanity. The song varies as does the genre. Sometimes I know why the song is there. Other times, I have no idea why or how the song got stuck in my head, especially when it is a song I haven’t thought about in years. This music, however, exhausts me because I don’t know where it came from. I wonder if others have a similar experience as I. In 1957 Morgan entered the Vere Johns Opportunity Hour, a talent show held at the Palace Theatre in Kingston. He won with rousing impressions of Little Richard and, shortly after that, was recruited to perform around the island with the popular Jamaican comedy team Bim and Bam. In 1959 Morgan entered the recording studio for the first time. Duke Reid, the acclaimed sound system boss, was looking for talent to record for his Treasure Isle record label. Morgan cut two popular shuffle-boogie sides "Lover Boy", a.k.a. "S-Corner Rock", and "Oh My". Soon after, Morgan cut the bolero-tinged boogie "Fat Man", which also became a hit. He also found time to record for Coxsone Dodd. In 1960 Morgan became the only artist ever to fill the places from one to seven on the Jamaican pop chart simultaneously. Among those hits were "Don't Call Me Daddy", "In My Heart", "Be Still", and "Meekly Wait and Murmur Not". But it was the following year that Morgan released the biggest hit of his career, the Leslie Kong production of "Don't You Know", later retitled "Housewives' Choice" by a local DJ. The song featured a bouncing ska riddim, along with a duet by Morgan and Millicent "Patsy" Todd. "Housewives' Choice" began the legendary rivalry between Morgan and Prince Buster, who accused Morgan of stealing his ideas. Buster quickly released "Blackhead Chiney Man", chiding Morgan with the sarcastic put-down, "I did not know your parents were from Hong Kong" – a swipe at Kong. Morgan returned with the classic "Blazing Fire", in which he warns Buster to "Live and let others live, and your days will be much longer.
Host Freddie Campbell travels the world to discover new bands that play ska music. Ska is style of music that developed in Jamaica in the 1950s as a precursor to Reggae. It has an easily recognisable style, characterised by bars made up of four triplets, with a definitive guitar chop on the offbeat. This is called an upstroke or skank. The music of Jamaica includes Jamaican folk music and many popular genres, such as mento, ska, rocksteady, reggae, dub music, dancehall, ska jazz, reggae fusion and related styles. Jamaica's music culture is a fusion of elements from neighboring Caribbean islands such as Trinidad and Tobago (calypso and soca).

Ska music is typically quick, upbeat and exciting – made for dancing – featuring horns (commonly trumpet, saxophone, and trombone) that take the lead and follow the skank, as well as piano or keyboard that emphasises the walking bass line. Drums tend to keep 4/4 time, but the 3rd beat of each 4-triplet phrase is accented by the bass drum and snare. Ska incorporates elements of traditional mento and calypso music, alongside American Jazz and R&B.
Ska music was made for dancing. It stand out because the music is upbeat, quick and exciting. Musically, it can be characterized with a drumbeat on the 2nd and 4th beats (in 4/4 time) and with the guitar hitting the 2nd, 3rd and 4th beats. Traditional Ska bands generally featured bass, drums, guitars, keyboards, horns with sax, trombone and trumpet being most common. Music historians typically divide the history of Ska into three periods: the original Jamaican scene of the 1960s (First Wave); the English 2 Tone Ska revival of the late 1970s (Second Wave); and the third wave Ska movement, which started in the 1980s and rose to popularity in the US in the 1990s. Without a doubt Ska has set a musical standard for genres that follow it such as Reggae and Rocksteady.

Ska Music Basics: Genres of music are seldom invented in someone's basement, generally they sort of fade into existence. Such is the case with ska, a genre of Jamaican music which comes from Mento and calypso music, combined with American Jazz and R&B, which could be heard on Jamaican radio coming from high-powered stations in New Orleans and Miami. Ska became popular in the early 1960s. The Sound: Ska music was made for dancing. The music is upbeat, quick and exciting. This photo appeared in the Star Newspaper on November 6, 1964. Roy Panton who appears smiling to the right of Phyllis Dillon in the front row talk about how this moment with the Vulcans was a happy one for him, but shortly thereafter he and Phyllis experienced a disappointment. “They went to Germany without us,” Roy said. I know that this may have been horrible for Roy at the time it happened, and still it is hard for him to remember without feeling sadness today, but I told him that had he gone, his life's path would have been altered so who knows if it was actually may have been for the better. He told me that he also had recorded a song with Rita Anderson (Marley). “At Studio One. I only recorded there once. Title was “Everyday,” but don't know if it was ever released. And by the way my first recording was for Duke Reid not Beverley. Stranger & I recorded two songs titled, “Adam & Eve b/w “Freedom Land” but Duke change the name to “Come and Hold My Hand.”

Ska combined elements of Caribbean mento and calypso with American jazz and rhythm and blues. It is characterized by a walking bass line accented with rhythms on the off-beat. Ska developed in Jamaica in the 1960s when Prince Buster, Clement "Coxsone" Dodd, and Duke Reid formed sound systems to play American rhythm & blues and then began recording their own songs.[2] Some suggest ska dates to earlier times, however. In the early 1960s, ska was the dominant music genre of Jamaica and was popular with British mods. Later it became popular with many skinheads. Music historians typically divide the history of ska into three periods: the original Jamaican scene of the 1960s; the 2 Tone ska revival of the late 1970s in Britain, which fused Jamaican ska rhythms and melodies with the faster tempos and harder edge of punk rock; and the third wave of ska, which involved bands from the UK, other European countries (notably Germany), Australia, Japan, South America and the US, beginning in the 1980s and peaking in the 1990s.
The first ska recordings were created at facilities such as Studio One and WIRL Records in Kingston, Jamaica with producers such as Dodd, Reid, Prince Buster, and Edward Seaga The ska sound coincided with the celebratory feelings surrounding Jamaica's independence from the UK in 1962; an event commemorated by songs such as Derrick Morgan's "Forward March" and The Skatalites' "Freedom Sound". Until Jamaica ratified the Berne Convention for the Protection of Literary and Artistic Works, the country didn't honor international music copyright protection. This created a large number of cover songs and reinterpretations. One such cover was Millie Small's version of the R&B/shuffle tune, "My Boy Lollypop" first recorded in New York in 1956 by 14 year old Barbie Gaye.][20] Smalls' rhythmically similar version, released in 1964, was Jamaica's first commercially successful international hit. With over seven million copies sold, it remains one of the best selling reggae/ska songs of all time. Many other Jamaican artists would have success recording instrumental ska versions of popular American and British music, such as Beatles songs, Motown and Atlantic soul hits, movie theme songs and surf rock instrumentals. The Wailers covered The Beatles' "And I Love Her", and radically reinterpreted Bob Dylan's "Like a Rolling Stone". They also created their own versions of Latin-influenced music from artists such as Mongo Santamaria
A member of the classic first wave of Jamaican ska artists, Derrick Morgan was among the genre's founding fathers, emerging alongside pioneers including the Skatalites, Laurel Aitken, Prince Buster, and Desmond Dekker. Born in March, 1940, Morgan was raised in the Kingston area, exposed to a variety of musical sources spanning from New Orleans R&B to the choral music of the nearby church where his father served as deacon. At the age of 17, he took top honors at the annual Vere John's Opportunity talent show, delivering blistering renditions of Little Richard's "Long Tall Sally" and "Jenny Jenny," and in 1959 teamed with producer Duke Reid to record his debut single "Lover Boy." Morgan's follow-up, "Fat Man," was a smash throughout Jamaica, and he later scored with recordings of "Leave Earth" and "Wigger Wee Shuffle," both cut with the legendary Clement "Coxsone" Dodd. By 1960, Morgan was the unrivaled King of Ska -- at the peak of his popularity, he was the first and only Jamaican artist to date to hold down the top seven slots on the national pop singles chart during the same week, generating a string of smashes including "Be Still," "In My Heart," "Don't Call Me Daddy," "Moon Hop," and "Meekly Wait and Murmur Not." In 1961, he recorded his biggest hit ever, "Housewives' Choice," and a year later -- in celebration of Jamaica's emancipation -- he recorded the first independence song, "Forward March." Morgan and Prince Buster, arguably the two biggest ska performers of the era

Ska is style of music that developed in Jamaica in the 1950s as a precursor to Reggae. It has an easily recognisable style, characterised by bars made up of four triplets, with a definitive guitar chop on the offbeat. This is called an upstroke or skank. Ska incorporates elements of traditional mento and calypso music, alongside American Jazz and R&B.One of the most important names in Ska historyis Clement “Coxsone” Dodd. Dodd was a DJ, rather than an artist, but it was he is largely responsible for the spread and popularity of the first wave of Ska across Jamaica. He identified the country's need for national pride and cultural identity in the days surrounding its gaining independence. He setup Studio One, which is the – now legendary – recording studio in which many of the first ska tracks were laid down. After only a decade, Ska gave way to the emerging genres of Rocksteady and Reggae, whichwere characterised by slower songs with more socio-political themes. The second wave of Ska took off in the UKint the 1970s. This wave of Ska was known as 2-tone and the overarching message that proliferated in the lyrics of songs was one of unity. Bands, including Madness and The Specials, were typically made up of members from Caucasian and African races. The music itself featured melodies and rhythms that had characterised the first wave of Ska in Jamaica – but with a decidedly punk influence.
Alphanso Castro Remember Teenage Dance Party Ska Glory days. Teenage Dance Party (TADP).With that famous theme, Bear Man Shuffle, one would hear the mellow voice of Aggrey Brown from Negril to Morant Point calling all Jamaican teenagers to the show.TADP was the brainchild of Sonny Bradshaw. The talent, that placed TADP on the map were Winston Blake, Godfrey Blair, Alphanso Castro, Syl Castro, Lennie Lawrence, Pat Reynolds (our first 'queen' who was called Pat # One), Pat Coke (who was called Pat #Two),Verona Johnson, Ceceile Wilson, Hartley Cousins,Louis Burke and Peter Vassall. Also involved were Trevor Weir, Gerald Bennett, Winston Sirjue, Joyce Morris,Pat Williams, Roy Cousins, Symona Symes, Sandy McGeshie, Earl Knight and Sunshine Plunket.TADP was the vehicle through which the Jamaican music received its greatest exposure. The young people on the programme would dance to the music and, in so doing, the television audience would become more familiar with the music of the day. The innovativeness of TADP dancers helped to market Jamaican music. You would not miss a performance by the Castro brothers, Louis Burke or Lennie Lawrence. The dance created a visual impact - it gave body to the music and, therefore, people would associate particular songs with particular body moves.TADP also provided valuable exposure as in 1962 Alphanso Castro was selected to represent Jamaica at the World Fair in the USA, along with Jimmy Cliff, Prince Buster, Eric Monty Morris and Byron Lee and the Dragonaires. They sold ska to the world. Alphanso Castro, outdanced the famous Chubby Checker in a performance at Carib Theatre. The local newspaper, THE STAR, carried a headline which screamed 'Castro out-twists Chubby'.

Jamaica’s musicians have had a profound impact on modern music. It’s best known for Reggae, but before that came Ska. Many of the early Ska stars came from an orphanage in Kingston, The Alpha Boys school. It was run by nuns who were keen to teach the children music, but they couldn’t have known that so many of the Alpha old boys would end up on the world’s stage.
