Our host Dr. Amy Yillik ends this season's discussion of Culture of Care with a close look at Tier 3 needs and services. Her guest is Ryan Harding, Behavior Specialist with the Redmond School District, who explains that the Tier 3 program is more long-term and individualized than Tier 2, with a focus on providing students with whatever each one needs for success. Continuing repercussions from the pandemic have made these services even more critical with students' increased difficulties in socializing and self-regulating, often most evident on the playground, according to Ryan. He stresses the importance of including parents to achieve the goal of integration back into the classroom. This is an episode promoting empathy, trying to understand the needs and perceptions of others engaged in the efforts to support our students. Each of the episodes so far in Season 11 has centered on how educators might support the wellness of students. And in each week's discussion, our host Dr. Amy Yillik and her guests have acknowledged that the suggested strategies for students work best when educators are themselves calm and mindful. This week, Dr. Yillik turns her focus to ways that educators can achieve this level of wellness with her guest Sandi Washburn, Behavior Specialist with the Greater Albany Public Schools and author of two books on resilience and mindfulness. In their conversation, the two educators discuss how to deal with stress and avoid burnout, describing several exercises suggested in the two books. Educators might include in their schedules a daily activity that is simple, yet calming to combat the stress inherent in education careers. These activities would ideally include movement, expressions of gratitude, and/or positive connections. If educators take the time, however limited, for self-care, they will in turn have the resources to model self-regulation and mindfulness for their students. In this True Stories at Work episode, you get to meet Tara, who started her career as a behavioral specialist and found the skills and knowledge transferred nicely into HR. She worked in many industries (financial, tech, and higher ed) and understands that “the work that we do in HR is ultimately about people. The industries are definitely different. The types of people that work in them are different. But, overall there's a similar thread to humanity.” We connect around the virtue of patience, except in disciplinary situations “We would go through a corrective action process and it would be first, final written warning, second final written warning, and third final written warning. And I would have managers say, what does the word "final" mean if you're going this far?” Tara's early career aspirations were to be an archeologist. However, uncovering a revealing photo of an employee was not a treasure she was seeking when he was terminated after his 3rd “final” warning. “It confirmed was they knew this was coming… but it will indelibly be in my mind.” We discuss entitlement, and how it shows up in unusual ways across senior leadership “You know, sometimes people aren't grateful and sometimes people don't act so well… use their, their trash cans as toilets”. Tara understands that demonstrating kindness is the most important aspect of her legacy, even in challenging employment situations. After a company closure, she reflects on feedback she received from an impacted employee “If that is the legacy of my career, if that I handled something where somebody came away from a very negative experience and felt that there was kindness in that experience, then you know, then I've accomplished everything I need to accomplish.” We wrap up curious about why “HR people on TV tend to be represented as dull when we actually are amazing, have a lot of fun doing what we're doing while ensuring that there's heart in our work?” There are no answers to why our smart, talented peers are projected in media as Catbert (Dilbert's evil director of human resources) and Cody (the buzzkill in The Office). In the end, you'll hear the final workplace confession from my BFF. This one is a childish prank, gone, terribly wrong. A puddle splashing that got her banned from the work site. If we had the ability or knowledge to make changes that would help us create the life of our dreams, would we make them?Though it should be a simple yes, there are people in the world who will not change because of the wiring in their brain, so that means we have to involve neuroplasticity in the mix to invoke meaningful and lasting change.Check out Michael Rearden and his interview with Brian Clate, an Emotional Intelligence Coach and Behavior Specialist, as they dive into what it means to be emotional intelligence and how to change your behaviors. Going through major life changes brought about by divorce renders us doubting ourselves and our capacity to rear our children. Living a solo life can be a struggle to find our way from powerless to becoming empowered. My guest Diane Sorensen is no stranger to the pains of going through a divorce and the difficulties of co-parenting. She created the Beauty in Behavior program to educate adults on how to understand children's behavior and use them as opportunities for growth, both for them and for ourselves. Diane has been in the field of early childhood education for 30 years and holds degrees in early education and behavioral science. Key points covered in this episode: ✔️ Diane shares her struggles at home and in the classroom. Her fascination with wanting to understand behavior more introduced her to conscious discipline. "That's where my education started in taking a conscious approach and redefining my relationships with my children, myself, and the children in the classroom." ✔️ Powerless parenting versus empowered parenting. Diane points out that we can choose to step into our power as parents. Powerlessness is getting into the roles of victim, rescuer, or persecutor. We can challenge ourselves to step into that creative role and become our own coaches and our children as we go through challenges. ✔️ That victim mindset within your head is sometimes really sneaky. Start paying attention to how you are engaging in victimhood. As parents, the common phrase is, "I can't do XYZ because I have children." Right? ✔️Where there is blame, there is pain. Diane adds that we're off shooting our pain, blaming others to then self-blame. We don't need fixing but understanding. ✔️ Awareness is the bridge between problem and solution. We need to feel and understand our emotions and what they're telling us, and it is never too late. Diane shares that she was in her 40s when she came into parent coaching work. "I was utterly disconnected from feeling emotions. I had two feelings, being happy or mad. I did not feel them, and I acted them out. So if I was pleased, I was just over the top, and if I was angry, I was slamming things down." ✔️ Acknowledgment with compassion. Instead of moving into blame or judgment of what you feel, take power out by naming that voice that just came out. Doing so enables you to recalibrate yourself. Remember, what we resist persists and grows bigger. ✔️ We're so used to focusing on what we don't want. Diane reminds us to focus on what we do want and then take action. Action is where transformation happens. "Practice micro shifts. We traditionally live by black and white, and it's all or nothing." The little steps make a difference, and the difference they make is consistency. ✔️ We're really doing our kids a disservice when we follow them around and try to make everything great for them. We think we're saving them from feeling discomfort, but actually, it's us who don't want to see our children having emotions because we're not comfortable with their feelings. "It makes a huge impact when we can sit, be the container, give and hold space for them so they can feel sad, frustrated. They feel understood, seen and heard. As humans, that's all we want. All of us." Diane Sorensen is a relationship-based parenting coach. She is the creator of the Beauty in Behavior parent coaching program. Diane believes that children's behavior is constantly presenting us with opportunities for growth, both for them and for ourselves. Diane has been in the field of early childhood education for 30 years and holds degrees in early education and behavioral science. She is also trained in Conscious Discipline, a research-based approach grounded in neuroscience. In her time as a teacher Diane implemented conscious discipline practices in her classroom. Teachers, administration and parents took notice and could see, hear and most importantly feel the difference in the classroom. Diane then took on the role of Behavior Specialist teaching other education staff these practices before turning full time to coaching parents. The Beauty in Behavior program is designed to help parents understand their child's behavior on a deeper level, lower stress, and support parents in creating the relationships they desire. Diane is also the creator and host of the "Beauty in Behavior" podcast. Lisa Skinner is a published author and Behavior Specialist on Alzheimer's and its corresponding dementias. She has served as a counselor in California for more than 20 years. Lisa was also the regional director of an assisted living company for many years. Her interest in dementia-related illness stems from her family, where seven different members are afflicted with the condition. In Lisa's book Not All Who Wander Need Be Lost, she helps her readers cope with loved ones struggling with Alzheimer's. The book helps explain behaviors caused by dementia, encourages those who feel burdened, and gives practical advice for how to respond. In this episode… Losing any loved one to an illness is difficult, but helping someone with dementia and Alzheimer's disease can be particularly painful. The steady decline of short-term memory and unfamiliar behaviors can turn a family member into a stranger. Similar to hearing loss, the condition can easily isolate the person from their support network. As someone who has had seven family members diagnosed with dementia, Lisa Skinner has found her calling in helping others through the struggle. She has developed her insights over 25 years as a counselor, a regional director of assisted living facilities, and her own experience. She wrote her book, Not All Who Wander Need Be Lost, to be a guide for those who need support and understanding. On this episode of the ListenUp! Podcast, Dr. Mark Syms interviews Lisa Skinner, author and Alzheimer's Behavior Specialist, to better understand how to treat those with dementia-related illnesses. She walks through the stages of Alzheimer's and what treatments are available early on. Then, they dive into day-to-day life, including advice on “joining their reality,” managing their behaviors, and coping with loss. Tune in to learn more.
