Several years ago, in a prophetic dream, I heard clearly the word, ‘Thundercloud'. This a term I hardly ever use, so when I receive words like these, I take it seriously. I looked it up in the dictionary and a thundercloud is basically a cloud charged with electricity and produces lightning and thunder. Interestingly, there are many references of thunderclouds in Scripture and I want to explore what they mean to us prophetically, and how we can apply it in our lives.

This was recorded in the early evening in the forest near Medicine Lake in Modoc National Forest, Siskiyou County, California. Thunderclouds had been brewing for much of the afternoon when finally this thunderstorm sprang to life at the end of the day, so I hastily grabbed my recording gear and set it up beneath a tree in the forest not far from my campsite. On the day day prior to this recording there were thunderstorms which lasted for much of the day, but unfortunately it was also the day that the forest service arrived with heavy equipment to clean up the roads and campgrounds and ready them for their official opening. They cleared the roads of snow and debris, moved snow out of many of the campsites, and removed downed trees and limbs. Though I did make a recording of the storms that day, it was filled with the sounds of heavy equipment and chainsaws in the distance. But luckily a storm popped up again the following evening and I was able to make this recording. By then people were beginning to trickle in to the area, and you will hear the sounds of a few vehicles passing on the nearby road. This is by no means a pristine natural soundscape, but I thought it sounded pretty cool and I don't think the few anthropogenic sounds detract from it too much. I hope you think the same. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/soundbynature/support

Modern Classics is the new series where Charlie and Nate invite their favorite musicians, journalists, and friends of the show to wax lyrical about a song that's important in their life. In the first installment of Modern Classics, Nate and Charlie sit down with the host of NPR's hit news and culture program It's Been a Minute, Sam Sanders. Sam is one of the best people to talk music with, not only because he has his finger on the pulse of what's happening in the entertainment world, but because as a former music major he's got knowledge for days. That knowledge makes Sam the perfect person to explain why Labrinth's 2019 track “Sexy MF” might be one of the hidden gems of contemporary pop, a song that he hears as “fun and fantastical with all these wonderful tricks and bells and whistles.” Nate and Charlie had never heard “Sexy MF” before Sam brought it to them, and were immediately hooked by the song's copious ear candy: sly references to Prince and James Brown, death-defying vocal harmonies, all scaffolded atop an indomitable piano groove. Labrinth, aka Timothy Lee McKenzie, is a U.K. singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer who released his first single in 2010. Since then he's gone on to compose the score for the hit TV show Euphoria, collaborated with Sia and Diplo as L.S.D., and worked with Beyoncé on the live-action Lion King soundtrack. Labrinth has racked up massive streaming numbers with tracks like “Jealous” and “Thunderclouds,” but “Sexy MF” is more of what one might call a “deep cut.” If you haven't heard it yet, like Sam, you might find that it's one you'll play “perhaps a thousand times” after your first listen. Songs discussed Labrinth - Sexy MF, Still Don't Know my Name, Mount Everest, Misbehaving Prince - Sexy M.F. Young Southpaw chats with sunshine pop maestro Louis Philippe about his new record ‘Thunderclouds’, his backing band The Night Mail, the legendary él and Humbug record labels, and much more, with LP offering great insight into his creating such wonderful music.   https://louisphilippe1.bandcamp.com/ http://www.louisphilippe.co.uk/ @PhilippeAuclair  Young Southpaw: Your press release calls the album ‘the autumnal side of sunshine pop’. Which is a great phrase.   Louis Philippe: It’s not mine (laughs). Or maybe it was, I can’t remember. 'Autumnal' was actually a good word, I think, to choose for the record.   YS: I know I associate certain bands and albums with certain seasons. Do you find that yourself?   LP: Yep. If you say ‘autumnal’, The Clientele are very much a band that I associate with that season. With the spring, I would associate like Roger Nichols & The Small Circle of Friends, which is something which is a little bit niche but there you go. The Meters would be summery. Because obviously you would go for The Beach Boys for summer, yeah, but not all of the Beach Boys are summer, some of the Beach Boys are actually winter. Some of the more experimental stuff. But yes, I associate music with seasons. I wouldn’t go straight into thinking ‘oh yes, of course, this is a January record. This is a March record’. But yes. It’s not forcing to associate a record or a type of music with a time of the year. Not at all. And autumn for some reason seems to be more evocative than other seasons, when it comes to music. I think it’s because in pop there’s always a solar, a sunshine element. But most great pop - I’m not saying my record is great, it is great, but that’s not what I’m saying - there’s an element of melancholy and nostalgia. This is like the leaves turning, and the days shortening, and a different kind of warmth. So yes, I suppose that autumn really fits in very well with my idea of pop.   YS: Evokes twilight as well.  LP: Yep. Actually there’s even a song on the record which is about twilight. The song ‘The Mighty Owl’, which is the owl of Minerva, which only comes out when it gets dark.    (listen to the end to hear ‘The Mighty Owl’)
