As the boss of the largest of the three Divisions of the UK Field Army, Major General Tim Cross commanded around 30,000 men and women at one stage, having graduated through the ranks and serving in conflicts ranging from Northern Ireland to Kosovo and Iraq. A decade into his military career, he took a flight from Cyprus to Jerusalem and something happened in a garden there that totally shaped his life trajectory. It's a great story! Major-General Tim Cross joins John to discuss his experiences in the military amidst global security challenges. Reflecting on his involvement in the 2003 Iraq invasion, he acknowledges the failures of the post-war period, criticising the poor decisions that undermined lasting nation-building efforts. He also examines the growing threats from authoritarian regimes like Russia and China. Cross argues that the West is facing a leadership crisis and must embrace morally courageous decision-making to survive. He advocates for a strategic defence posture that enhances military capabilities to address modern threats, while also defending the core democratic values that are increasingly under pressure in the West.

Sport Climbing is one of the newest additions to the Olympic sporting menu. In Paris, climbers tackle two distinct disciplines - boulder/lead, and speed climbing. In this special episode, we are joined by Tim Cross, a science writer with The Economist, to reveal the hidden side of sport climbing. We talk about the differences between these disciplines, and how the competitions are scored and won. We also about the physiological demands of the sport, the ideal body types for climbing, and how route design presents new challenges for climbers that means that climbing excellence is both art and science, mental and physical. After shopping demos as the newly formed quintet, the song “Neenah Menasha” caught the ears of A&R person Pablo Mathiason and the band signed with The Work Group (a Columbia Records subsidiary) in the fall of 1993.  The following year, Sponge released the now iconic, Platinum-selling debut album, “Rotting Piñata,” to global, critical and commercial success.   After two top 10 hit singles, several tours and live television performances, including the John Stewart Show and Late Night with David Letterman, Sponge followed up their debut with 1996's "Wax Ecstatic.” This sophomore effort garnered a "Song Of The Year" nod from Rolling Stone Magazine for title track “Wax Ecstatic.” The album also yielded two additional top 10 hit singles and featured a guest vocal appearance from Richard Butler of the Psychedelic Furs on the song “I Am Anastasia.” Since then, Sponge continues to release new music and keeps a near-constant tour schedule to the pleasure of their legion of loyal followers.   Tickets  for Sponge, C-Level, Slim Ross, and The Rumble    SEP 1ST -23 at Winchester Lakewood, OH https://www.ticketweb.com/event/sponge-at-the-winchester-the-winchester-tickets/13045225?pl=Winchester&REFID=clientsitewp       Sponge Info https://www.spongetheband.com

Recent years have seen a boom in biometric security systems—identification measures based on a person's individual biology—from unlocking smartphones, to automating border controls. As this technology becomes more prevalent, some cybersecurity researchers are worried about how secure biometric data is—and the risk of spoofs. If generative AI becomes so powerful and easy-to-use that deepfake audio and video could hack into our security systems, what can be done? Bruce Schneier, a security technologist at Harvard University and the author of “A Hacker's Mind”, explores the cybersecurity risks associated with biometrics, and Matthias Marx, a security researcher, discusses the consequences of bad actors obtaining personal data. If artificial intelligence could overcome security systems, human implants may be used as authentication, according to Katina Michael, a professor at Arizona State University. Plus, Joseph Lindley, a design academic at Lancaster University, proposes how security systems can be better designed to avoid vulnerabilities. To think about practical solutions, Scott Shapiro, professor at Yale Law School and author of “Fancy Bear Goes Phishing”, puts generative AI into the wider context of cybersecurity. Finally, Tim Cross, The Economist's deputy science editor, weighs up the real-world implications of our thought experiment. In the first study, we explore whether ML can learn to reproduce expert treatment decisions and automatically identify candidate projects, using historic condition, treatment and inventory data. In the second study, we explore extensions to conventional Pavement Management System (PMS) optimisation tools which provide insight into the network-wide implications of various multi-criteria funding allocation scenarios, and the levels of service that can potentially be realised. I had the great pleasure of interviewing fellow Rennaissance Man Tim Cross, where we discussed the many passions he has going from his BBQ catering to his book to his music. We talked about how he manages his mental, emotional, spiritual, and physical energy as he navigates these passions to keep them flowing. We also had a real conversation about how authentic love is defined and demonstrated, mental health, the importance of kindness, and doing the work--no one is exempt. Like many of us, the road isn't always easy. It's what we do with the adversity that makes all the difference in our lives.About My Guest:Timothy J. Cross is a Rap Artist, Producer, Entrepreneur, & Published Author and is the youngest of four siblings. He's spent most of his life as a creator, using his talents as a music producer and writer to self-release his rap albums. His 3rd-grade teacher first noticed his skill as a writer who asked the class to write a page-long description of what it meant to be kind to others, during which time, he won first prize for the most well-written paper in his class. His first book, Perfect Love: The Bond of Perfection, is a natural progression and transition from musical verse & song structure to commentary & authorship. It continues to gain momentum & excitement, touching the hearts and minds of all who read it. It is more than likely the first of many to come. Episode 10 has me sitting down in the Seattle studio of artist Tim Cross for a fun, rambling and at times delightfully contentious conversation about absolutely everything. I'm not kidding, we talked about every single thing, seriously, I had to make it a two-parter just to fit it all in. I also apparently have lost the ability to count to ten, as I refer to it as episode nine about a hundred times. Pay no attention to the idiot with the microphone.
