2 Thessalonians 1:1–12What does suffering say about where we stand with God?As persecution and affliction increased, the Thessalonian church began to wonder whether their circumstances meant they had somehow missed God. Paul writes to correct their thinking and remind them of what is true: their suffering does not define their identity. Jesus does.In 2 Thessalonians 1:1–12, Paul points a pressured church back to grace, celebrates a faith and love that are flourishing in hardship, and reminds them that the Day of the Lord will bring both perfect justice and glorious salvation. Their response is not to check out while waiting for Jesus, but to persevere, pursue holiness, share the gospel, and live lives worthy of the calling they have received.When life gets harder, the answer is not less faithfulness. Rooted in grace and strengthened by the Holy Spirit, we keep trusting, keep loving, and keep working for the glory of Jesus until He comes.

As Paul closes his first letter to the Thessalonians, he gives the church a picture of life together: honouring servant leaders, pursuing peace, patiently caring for one another, rejoicing, praying, giving thanks, and holding tightly to God's Word. Yet the hope of this calling does not rest on our ability to get it all right. The God who calls His people is faithful and He will sanctify and sustain us to the end.

We may not know when Jesus will return, but Scripture is clear about how we are called to live while we wait.In 1 Thessalonians 5:1–11, Paul reminds the church that the day of the Lord will come unexpectedly. Yet for those who are in Christ, that day is not one to fear. We are children of the light, saved by grace, filled with the Holy Spirit, and called to live awake, self-controlled lives marked by faith, hope and love.Rather than becoming consumed with timelines, predictions or trying to control what comes next, we are called to stay faithful to the mission God has given us: pursue holiness, love one another, share the gospel and keep encouraging one another as we wait for Jesus to return.

In Ephesians, Paul reminds a discouraged church of the extraordinary riches of God's grace in Christ: we are chosen, adopted, forgiven, redeemed, sealed by the Spirit, and united as one body in Jesus. These aren't distant truths or temporary blessings; they are the secure foundation of who we are.Because of what God has already done, we are called to remember our identity and hope in Christ, walk in a manner worthy of our calling in love, holiness, unity, wisdom, and the fullness of the Spirit and stand firm in God's strength against the spiritual forces of evil.The Christian life is not a fight to earn victory, but a life lived from the victory Christ has already won. So when discouragement comes, when sin entangles, or when the mission feels overwhelming: remember the riches of His grace, walk in what He has called you to, and stand firm in Christ.

Death is painful, but for those who are in Christ, it is not the end. In 1 Thessalonians 4:13–18, Paul reminds a grieving church that because Jesus died and rose again, those who belong to Him will also rise. When Christ returns, the dead in Christ will be raised, those who are alive will join them, and together we will welcome our King and be with Him forever.Christian hope does not mean that we do not grieve; it means that we grieve differently. The grave does not have the final word. Jesus does. So as we wait for His return, we are called to comfort the grieving, share this hope with those who do not yet know Him, and encourage one another with these words.

God's will for His people is clear. That we would become more and more like Jesus through the sanctification of the Spirit.As Paul turns to 1 Thessalonians 4, he shows us what that looks like in the everyday realities of life: fleeing sexual immorality, growing in brotherly and sisterly love, and faithfully getting on with the life God has called us to. Holiness isn't something we manufacture through willpower, nor is it a journey we walk alone. It is the work of the Holy Spirit in us, lived out alongside the family of God.As we double down on becoming more like Christ, our transformed lives become part of our witness to the world around us.

Faith in Jesus is never passive. While we are saved by grace through faith alone, that same grace transforms the way we live.In this message from 1 Thessalonians 2:17–3:13, we see the Apostle Paul model what a gospel-shaped life looks like. His love for the church, his longing to gather, his willingness to suffer, his encouragement of believers, his gratitude, and his constant prayer all reveal that authentic faith produces visible fruit.Pastor Jonah reminds us that Christians are not saved by good works, but they are most certainly saved unto them. Is Christianity simply one more subscription competing for our attention, or is God's Word effectively working in us?

A man remembered not for his platform or position, but for his encouragement. Through Barnabas' example, we discover that encouragement is far more than kind words; it's generosity, belief, presence, second chances, and faithfully investing in others.As Barnabas stood beside a rejected Saul (later Paul), he helped shape a story that would impact generations. Not to protect his own reputation, but to protect the integrity of the gospel. As critics questioned Paul's motives, he pointed the church back to what they had witnessed firsthand: a ministry marked by suffering rather than comfort, service rather than status, gentleness rather than domination, and God's approval rather than human applause.This message is about far more than church leaders. Jesus calls every believer to make disciples, which means every Christian is called to lead someone toward Him. Through Paul's example, we're challenged to examine our own hearts: Are we seeking recognition or faithfulness? Comfort or obedience? Though only weeks old and facing intense persecution, they were known for their faith that worked, love that served, hope that endured, and joy that overflowed. Their witness wasn't built on comfort or recognition, it was the work of the Holy Spirit producing Christlike lives.As Rooted Fellowship continues its Double Down to Double Up journey, this sermon calls us to pursue what truly matters: gathering in the name of Jesus, depending on the Holy Spirit, labouring in love, enduring with hope, and living as a joyful witness to the gospel. Despite facing some serious adversity in Thessalonica, Paul is not deterred from preaching the gospel. In fact, he goes on to Berea and does the exact same thing he did in Thessalonica - visit the Jewish Synagogue and engage with the locals around the Word of God. And many come to faith!But persecution follows Paul to Berea, so he is sent away with an escort - not alone. Pastor Jono takes us through Acts 17 and shows us that doubling down for Jesus leads to adversity and persecution, and that we should not attempt to face it on our own. 

This week marks the start of Rooted Fellowship's new two-year discipleship journey. As we look at Luke 9:57–10:2, we are reminded that following Jesus is not comfortable, casual, or something we do alone. Jesus calls His people to count the cost, fix their eyes ahead, and step faithfully into His mission.The harvest is plentiful, but the labourers are few. As a church, we are being called to double down so that we can double up. To deepening discipleship, strengthening community, raising leaders, and preparing for the work God has placed before us.No turning back.

Last weekend saw the United States and Israel airstriking Iran, with Iran retaliating with strikes on Israel, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Jordan, and Kuwait. The New Zealand government put out a press release soon after, condemning Iran for the strikes and for protest crackdown earlier this year.  While the press release and later communications from the government have called for all parties to follow international law, the government has offered little in criticism of the United States and Israel's bombings. Prime Minister Christopher Luxon, when asked if the strikes were legal, said it would be up to each country to provide a justification.  This past week also saw a new policy from the government that would look to reclaim ACC payments from those already receiving welfare payments. ACC claimants usually receive funding to support their inability to work, however those on the benefit will already be receiving such funds regardless. While there is cross-party support for a change that would remove this “double dipping”, the policy would also charge back some of those who have already benefited from this loophole.  The move has been criticised by opposition MPs, who say creating debt for already marginalised or vulnerable groups is unfair and morally questionable.
