Jonathan GrossmanTake a walk with me down Fascination Street as I get to know Jonathan Grossman. Known in some circles as Johnny Keys; Jon is the keyboard player for the rock band Uncle Lucius. Jon is from Kentucky, and how he became part of this kickass south Texas band is a good story, I get him to tell it to me in this episode. We discuss his growing up in Lexington, and what he was doing after school before the universe aligned and Uncle Lucius rolled into his town. We also chat about other bands that have keyboard players in them, and even some fake movie bands that do. Uncle Lucius took a bit of a break a few years ago, and then through a series of magical events, they were almost forced back together. The television show Yellowstone happened to feature an Uncle Lucius song in the fourth episode of the first season. The song caught fire all over again and made the band look into getting back together to see what they had left in the tank. As it turns out, they had quite a lot. Since then, they have released 3 more albums and just recorded yet another one a few weeks ago live at Gruene Hall. I ask Jon about the royalty implications of having a song blow up on a TV show like that, and he give HUGE props to Austin attorney Gwendolyn Seale! One of their more recent albums is called 'Like It's The Last One Left' and features one of my favorite Uncle Lucius songs (All the Angelenos). Jon is gracious enough to let me play that song, and their massive hit (from Yellowstone) called Keep the Wolve Away. Naturally we talk about the live show at Gruene Hall, why they haven't headlined at world famous Stubb's in Austin, and Uncle Lucius' insane touring schedule. We end the show talking about some of Jon's other work. He releases music under the name 'Sleepy Jon', as well as performing live at Sam's Town Point (south of Austin) EVERY Wednesday that Uncle Lucius is in town. Three members of Uncle Lucius are in this weekly performing band with some of Arlo Guthrie's daughters. The band is called The Guthrie Girls. Episode 301: Americana music has been most conspicuously represented in the last few years by songwriting, band-leading artists, including Jason Isbell, Sierra Ferrell, and Billy Strings. Flash back to the origins of the alt-country and Americana movement, and the conversation was more often about bands, such as Son Volt, Whiskeytown, and the Old 97s. Such outfits made well-written roots music that rocked with that collective commitment that makes bandcraft so fascinating. This week I present two veteran and venerable roots rock bands that came along in the second Americana wave, bands that have weathered changes and renewed their vows - Austin's revived Uncle Lucius and Raleigh NC-based Blake Christiana of Yarn.
Texas songwriter and front man of the band Uncle Lucius, Kevin Galloway grew up on the Gulf of Mexico, next to chemical plants and refineries. His father worked on one of those plants. When Kevin is just thirteen years old, a horrible accident almost kills his father. ‘He shouldn't be alive, but he lived by a miracle.' The blue collar story is the inspiration for one of the bands biggest successes, Keep The Wolves Away. The song even brought the band back together after their breakup when the song appeared on the TV-show Yellowstone.Fans of Townes van Zandt and Guy Clark better get to know Kentuckian Dalton Mills. Start off with the bluegrass sounds of his home state Kentucky, combine that with the phrasing and songwriting of one of his biggest inspirations, Guy Clark, and you get close to Dalton's music. He even wrote a song about Clark, named Shakespeare In Boots. Enjoy this special episode of Countrykoorts!
Passion and persistence are key traits when it comes to finding success in today's music realms. The band that goes by the name Uncle Lucius took that fact to heart after going on hiatus in 2018 and regrouping five years later. “We started getting this thing rolling in late 2005,” lead singer and songwriter Kevin Galloway tells Lee and Billy . “We put out our first album in 2006 and we had a great run through the year 2018. I set the band down and I said ‘You know what, I just think it's time to move on for 100 different reasons.' And we talked about it in an amicable way and did like a seven month farewell thing. And then we dropped the mic in March of 2018 and moved on. I moved on to some solo things. The guys in the band were doing different projects and living different lives.”Nevertheless, as Galloway tells it, fate had other ideas in store. Three years after the band broke up, one of their songs, “Keep the Wolves Away,” which they had released in 2012, was tapped for the hit series “Yellowstone.” That turned the spotlight back on the band and eventually led them to reconsider their earlier decision and regroup. While I didn't get to go to SXSW this year, I still enjoyed the heck out of listening to all the amazing music. Once again, I've listened to somewhere around 2000 bands and narrowed it down to my 21 favorite flavors. If you want to check out the slightly less selective top 60 or so, that playlist is on Spotify here. Otherwise, just dig into this. As always, the amount of pure talent on display is incredibly humbling. Also, thanks for your patience! I just moved and everything is still a big mess but thankfully I was able to record one last episode in the Hideout House. Loved that place. Sad to see it go but it's on to the next.
