This is a special episode where I get the opportunity to interview Jon Thurmond and Wendy Dailey as I celebrate two years in podcasting, and they get ready to celebrate 200 episodes. I have learned a lot about podcasting from Jon and Wendy, and they have been so unselfish in what they share with me, I wanted to give a little something back to them to thank them. In this episode, we :
Podcasting is growing at a phenomenal pace with the market expected to reach almost $95 Billion by 2028. Within this huge market from sports and entertainment shows to true crime and comedy is an increasing amount of 'professional' podcasts with shows featuring HR themes amongst them. One of the attractions of podcasts is that they can be consumed by the listener in all manner of settings; walking the dog; the commute to work; the school run and working out at the gym. HR podcasts provide the listener a learning experience that can be consumed whenever the listener chooses to play the episode meaning they are not an interruption in an already busy day. Think learning on demand.Internal organisation podcast shows are also increasing in popularity with a number of firms using them to communicate to their internal stakeholders. Again, the benefit of being able to communicate purpose, values and training in a way that doesn't interrupt a worker's day is proving very effective. The HR podcasting sector is very broad with shows focused on training, recruitment, reward, leadership and organisational culture meaning listeners can subscribe to any number of shows featuring content that is relevant to the listener. As HR Podcasts continue to grow in popularity and as this particular podcast is is almost a year old, I thought I'd turn the tables on one of HR's most popular podcasts and ask hosts Jon Thurmond and Wendy Dailey of the hugely popular HR Social Hour Half Hour Podcast about why they started their show. This episode is a bit of a delve behind the scenes of how a podcast is created and some of the challenges involved in producing a show focused on HR and why HR professionals should be consuming podcasts as part of their regular learning. As full-time working HR professionals themselves, Jon and Wendy were keen to talk about some of the key HR issues they are facing at the moment in the US. Interestingly. As Jon says the labour laws might be different in the country where you live but the people issues are much the same wherever you are.In this episode you'll learn:How HR Social Hour Half Hour was conceivedThe popularity of podcasts as a medium to communicate to a wide range of stakeholdersThe importance of original content in HR podcastsHow successful HR podcasts interact with their listeners and build a communityResources:https://www.linkedin.com/in/wendyrhdailey/https://www.linkedin.com/in/jonthurmond/https://hrsocialhourpodcast.podbean.comhttps://www.researchandmarkets.comhttps://ovenreadyhr.comhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/podcasthost/Twitter: @OvenHrhttps://blog.feedspot.com/hr_podcasts/Tell me me what YOU thinkTell me what you think of this interview. How do we get right within, in our workplaces? This week's guest on the Talent Magnet Leadership Podcast, Minda Harts, shares the answer with guest host Wendy Dailey this week. Minda is an author, speaker and thought-leader. She has given various talks and seminars on leadership, diversity and entrepreneurship, and advancing women of color. In 2018, she was named one of 25 Emerging Innovators by American Express. In this must listen conversation, she dives into her new book Right Within, and shares how employers and managers can make the workplace safer for marginalized employees. Minda gives a recap on her previous book, The Memo, and why she wrote it. “I just didn't see myself represented in a lot of the career books that were being put out there. I really wanted to be able to put something out there where we can talk about our stories and not only affirm ourselves, but then share ways that our colleagues and counterparts and allies could also be part of making the workplace better than we found it.” [2:49] Minda's new book, Right Within, came from talking to different women and thinking back on her own past experiences of racialized trauma in the workplace. [4:55] Right Within is written with women of color in mind. She wants to shed light on the racial discrimination that happens in the workplace, and the traumas that come with it. The book is also an opportunity for managers to create psychological safety inside their organizations and commit to equitable practices. [7:40] Minda's goal is that after people read Right Within, they'll be more willing to take steps toward equity. People of color reading it will have the tools they need to assert themselves and their boundaries, and have conversations about what is acceptable for them in their work environment. [9:50] The true problem with bias is unchecked bias, as opposed to unconscious and conscious bias. Too many people are walking around with biases and no one is doing anything about them, or holding them accountable for them. [10:29] Writing about the racial trauma she experienced in the workplace allowed Minda to tell her truth so that others could understand the harm that can be caused. It was also healing because it allowed her to give voice to the issues that she had downplayed. [12:36] That leaders are more courageous, and are more willing to do the work in order to have equity in their organizations, excites Minda greatly. Reaching that equity goal however, means that leaders have to engage in bystander intervention, and commit stand against inappropriate behaviour in their work environments. [17:06] Managers and leaders have to be committed to equity and equitable practices so that everyone on their teams is invested in and supported. It has to be mandatory and not something managers can opt into. Equity has to be normalized, part of the overall process, and part of the entire organization. On this episode of Podcasting Smarter, Jen is joined by Jon Thurmond. Jon is the co-host of the HR Social Hour Podcast where he and fellow HR-pro Wendy Dailey talk to other HR professionals about connecting, giving back, and building your network. Jon is also a co-host on the long-running Star Joes Podcast which is a show dedicated to Star Wars, G.I. Joe, and everything in between. Jon's Podcasting Confession: Jon failed to hit record on his fourth episode with a great guest. Luckily his guest was happy to record again, and improve on his first podcast interview. Jon's Podcasting Smarter Tips: Before he hit record for the first time, Jon and Wendy hopped on Skype and practiced so they could work on their timing and be confident that their podcast was professional sounding from the beginning Jon knew there were a lot of HR podcasts out there already so he know it was important to find a hook. He and Wendy chose to concentrate on humanizing their industry and building community. The HR Social Hour Podcast came about after Jon created a weekly Twitter Chat, #HRSocialHour in order to connect with other HR professionals that like him, were not able to attend SHRM, a large, annual HR conference. That twitter chat was so successful, that it inspired the idea for a complementary podcast. Podcasters may want to consider starting their own Twitter Chats as a way to connect with their audience. Be sure to advertise the date/time, and attach a hashtag to it. Jon uses the tool, Wakelet, to capture the content from his Twitter chats. Jon has benefitted professionally from his podcast. He even got invited to be part if the Blog Squad for this year's SHRM Conference in Chicago. This gave him the opportunity to connect with respected leaders in his industry. His biggest piece of advice is to do our homework. It is easy to start a podcast, but difficult to keep it going unless you prepare by organizing your time, planning your content, and committing to being consistent. When we say the word "slaves" we are talking about men, women, and children who are caught up in the horrors of human trafficking. It's a harsh reality. And it can feel overwhelming when we read / hear / see the facts and figures. And while it might seem crazy... something CAN be done about it. Wendy Dailey and Michelle Bridgeman of International Sanctuary and PURPOSE Jewelry are my guests this week and they are doing whatever they can to impact the lives of women affected by human trafficking all over the world. This episode is powerful and gives us HOPE that when we take action, change really can happen. ABOUT WENDY DAILEY - CO-FOUNDER: Originally a Northern California native, Wendy grew up with an appreciation for culture. Her love for diverse cultures and passion for justice leads her desire to grow the organization to a global level. Though she never thought she would dabble in business, since her background is in education, Wendy thoroughly appreciates the opportunities International Sanctuary has given her. Wendy's crusade to see survivors of all nations given the opportunities to successfully progress into their future is what motivates and helps her build the organization on a daily basis. ABOUT MICHELLE BRIDGEMAN - HEAD OF DISTRIBUTION After graduating from Cal State Long Beach, Michelle started working in marketing for a travel company. Her surroundings helped to ignite her passion to see the rest of the world. Soon after she decided to take a year off to join a missions trip called The World Race to 11 different countries! Michelle first heard about iSanctuary while in India on a human trafficking awareness trip throughout Southeast Asia. After becoming aware of the immense injustice, she felt compelled to somehow get involved. She discovered iSanctuary had an office in Orange County and started volunteering as the Social Media Coordinator. This led to being hired on full time!
