In this episode, you'll hear a recording from the Presbytery Diaconal Committee's fifth Summit hosted by the OPC Committees on Diaconal Ministries and Ministerial Care entitled, "Overview of the PDC Mandate and the Role of the CDM". You'll hear from OPC Committee on Diaconal Ministries administrator, David Nakhla, who presents the long history of the CDM, which has now existed for 76 years, to demonstrate that a great emphasis of the OPC, even from the beginning, has been to recognize the importance of the ministry of mercy. Nakhla points out in this session that the OPC was born out of poverty, during the Great Depression, when only three out of 48 churches were able to keep their buildings after leaving the PCUSA. He then re-introduces a working document of the CDM entitled, “Proposed Mandate for the Work of the PDC.” This document, compiled by the CDM in 2012, was built using the varied mandates of the seventeen PDCs and serves to suggest what a comprehensive scope of an active PDC could be. Although not yet adopted in full by all the presbyteries, the CDM has been encouraged to see the positive impact it has had in the ministry of the regional church in those presbyteries that have allowed it to shape its ministries of mercy. Although the content of this PDS session is primarily focused toward those serving on Presbytery Diaconal Committees, we trust you'll find that many aspects of the talk will benefit local deacons with food for thought, even with inspiration that comes from thinking outside the box. We urge you to avail yourself of the resources you'll hear about in this episode and let us know if you want to know more about these topics or Presbytery Diaconal Committees. We'll be releasing the last two sessions of PDS V on The Reformed Deacon podcast in the months to come, so be sure to look for them.Referenced in this episode:Proposed PDC MandateSample PDC Meeting Agenda Other PDC ResourcesYou can find all of our episodes at thereformeddeacon.org. The day we have all been waiting for. Tonight we launch ASOTU CON, but this morning we still have the UAW to check in on, dealers seeing the EV tax incentives in a new but old light, and Spotify testing some voice replication features! The UAW strike has expanded to include 38 GM and Stellantis parts distribution centers across 20 states, affecting the dealerships' service business, however, talks with Ford have seemingly made good progressThis action highlights the issue of wage disparities. Parts depot employees typically earn between $16-$24 an hour, compared to up to $32 at assembly plants.Eric Ray, a worker at GM's Ypsilanti Processing Center, stated: "We do just as much work as they do in the automotive plants. We do the same thing, we should be treated the same way."UAW President Shawn Fain is committed to eliminating varying wage rates, emphasizing that "The PDCs in particular, they've been stepped on a lot in the past."Notably, UAW made "real progress" in negotiations with Ford Motor Co., choosing not to add any Ford plants to the targeted strike, highlighting Ford's willingness to address key union prioritiesHarkening back to the time of Cash for Clunkers, some dealers fear that EV tax incentives may take a long time to come through.Beginning in 2024, eligible EV buyers can transfer federal tax credits to dealers, using these funds as a down payment. The move is part of the Inflation Reduction Act's provisions to support new and used EV purchases.Tyler Slade, operating partner at Tim Dahle Nissan Southtowne, expressed nervousness, citing history and concerns about waiting for government reimbursement: "You're going to have plenty of dealers that aren't going to be comfortable with that risk … waiting for the government to pay, much like Cash for Clunkers."Organizations like AIADA and NADA are actively working to streamline the point-of-sale transaction and ensure swift and accurate reimbursement from the government to avoid the issues faced during the Cash for Clunkers program.Spotify is launching a new beta test that will take the voice of a few select podcasters and translate them to other languages using AI.The innovative tool is initially translating podcasts into Spanish and French, with German translations in the pipeline. It not only translates the podcast into different languages but also synthesizes it in the podcaster's own voice, providing a genuine and immersive listening experience for global audiences.Concerns about safety and privacy have led to a measured release of this technology. We also discuss different class formats beyond the design course, and what age is appropriate for a student to receive a certificate. Penny also delves into what it means to being a certified permaculture designer. You can find out more about Jesse and her work at insideedgedesign.com, and Penny is at regenerativedesign.org. The upcoming permaculture design course they are co-teaching together is in Bozeman, Montana, from July 15 - 27, 2016, and integrates many of the ideas we discussed here. [caption id="attachment_3417" align="aligncenter" width="300"] Jesse and her daughter[/caption] Permaculture accessibility is of ongoing importance to me, as well as those of us who call Seppi's Place home. Though my work on the podcast continues to push the edges of social, economic, and community permaculture, the core corpus of knowledge that comes with designing a series of permacultures rests in the Permaculture Design Course, which requires steeping one's self in the language of the land, food, and gardens; water, clothing, work, and shelter. Through that one gains a core understanding of the language and lexicon of practicing permaculture. It isn't the destination of the journey, but the starting point, a place too often one cannot start down because of barriers of time, cost, or burden to family. That is changing, however, as more permaculture teachers, such as Penny and Jesse, see this problem and try different solutions. In their case, they provide child care and couples discounts. In others, the format is broken up and spread out over a series of weekends. Some are even being offered in the gift-economy. As time and needs change, so does our approach to permaculture. I remember a time speaking of permaculture beyond the landscape seemed completely foreign and antithetical to the work, but more books and articles emerge on social and economic permaculture each day. The more teachers and students who take up the mantle to teach and learn this material, the more options we have in sharing it with others, and in continue to make it more accessible and affordable. Whether you are a student looking for an alternative to the traditional design course intensive, or are a teacher who is offering something different, I'd like to hear from you.
