In Episode 474 of 'Relentless Health Value', host Stacey Richter interviews Dr. Yashaswini Singh, an economist and assistant professor at Brown University, about the growing influence of private equity (PE) in healthcare.  The conversation delves into the corporate transformation of medicine, highlighting the potential misalignment between business interests and patient care. Dr. Singh discusses the diverse strategies PE firms use to drive profitability, such as increasing negotiated prices, consolidating market share, employing real estate leasebacks, and emphasizing performance metrics that may not align with patient benefits.  The episode also examines the significant impacts these strategies have on physicians, including increased turnover and changes in practice patterns, as well as the broader implications for patients and communities. Dr. Singh stresses the importance of informed leadership, education, policy enforcement, and transparency to ensure that private investments ultimately benefit healthcare systems without compromising patient care. === LINKS ===

In this revelatory episode, I am joined by Dr. Don, a seasoned physician with four decades of experience, hailing from California. Over the course of his distinguished career, he has witnessed firsthand the profound harm wrought by the rise of centralized medicine—harm that, tragically, he himself contributed to through his involvement with a large HMO in the state. Now, with a deepened awareness of the devastating impact this system has had on countless patients, Dr. Don has dedicated himself to righting these wrongs. His mission is nothing less than to undo the damage done and prevent further suffering. As part of his crusade, he is exploring the possibility of a class action lawsuit against these powerful HMOs for their decades-long history of malpractice, neglect, and the dissemination of false information. Join us for an engaging and meticulously detailed conversation, in which Dr. Don offers a sobering critique of the current medical landscape. His insights are not only a call to action but also an invitation to consider what we, as individuals and as a society, can do to transform a system that has long been broken. The Sanctity of Life and the Sacred Role of Motherhood In this heartfelt and respectful conference address, the Elder James E. Faust addresses the profound topic of the sanctity of life, advocating for the unborn and emphasizing the sacred responsibilities and unparalleled blessings of motherhood. Drawing on religious teachings and historical perspectives, the talk underscores the moral and ethical considerations surrounding the preservation of life, the responsibilities of procreation, and the evils of abortion. It calls for a reverence for the divine partnership with God in creating life, the incomparable value of each human life, and the adherence to chastity within the bounds of marriage. The conference address is deeply rooted in religious doctrine and highlights the necessity of respecting and protecting the most precious creation—human life. Why is it so hard to find a trustworthy physician? Dr. Andrew Zywiec has chosen to practice medicine as a licensed tribal practitioner through the First Nation Medical Board in order to allow him the freedom to operate according to his conscience. What is his inside perspective on the moral and ethical crossroads many aspiring healers find themselves navigating in today's politicized, money-corrupted healthcare landscape? We dive into the complexities surrounding gender dysphoria, exploring how it often intersects with trauma, anxiety, and depression. Dr. Zywiec shares his perspective on the current medical landscape, particularly the challenges parents face in finding trustworthy doctors for their trans-identified youth. We discuss the evolution of the "standard of care" in treating gender dysphoria, highlighting how it has shifted from a more holistic approach to one that prioritizes affirmation and fast-tracks medicalization without addressing underlying issues. Dr. Zywiec emphasizes the importance of both critical thinking and intuition in medicine and critiques the algorithmic nature of modern medical practices, which can lead to a lack of personalized care.We also break down the concept of “medical necessity” and how it has been manipulated within the healthcare system, particularly in relation to insurance practices. I question whether “gender affirming” practitioners are in fact committing insurance fraud.Dr. Zywiec graduated medical school in 2019 with Distinction in Research and the Research Commendation Award, then left hospital medicine in 2023 due to ethical objections to current vaccine practices as well as the pharmacological castration and surgical mutilation of children. Dr. Zywiec actively fought against COVID mandates and “gender affirming care” in minors, and is still involved in the fight against medical tyranny and censorship, working with healthcare professionals nationwide and leaders in both the Ohio and Michigan House of Representatives. Dr. Zywiec is active in pro-life advocacy, and cofounded Doctors Against Gender Affirming Care with Dr. Somil Viradia. If you are a doctor please sign their petition. On this episode we welcome guest Dr. Joshua Trebach, an emergency medicine physician here at Iowa. This past spring he posted on X that medicine must "lose the mentality of thinking its okay to be miserable for years (or decades) to justify it being 'finally worth it' in the end." We couldn't agree more--live now, not later! Which is why PA2 Julie Vuong, M2 Fallon Jung, and MD/PhD student Madi Wahlen are each finding ways to reject that mentality. Indeed, medical education is changing, perhaps slowly, to reinforce the idea that just because medicine can be a difficult life doesn't mean that you should obsessively look forward to the day it gets better. That day is a long way away, so do what you can (what you must) to be who you want to be even as you're drinking from the firehose. Also, we answer one of listener Mohamed's questions on how he can jump right into his first year this fall with his eyes on patient advocacy.

Why do many wealthy people wait so long to retire? Despite earning a physician's salary, living frugally, and saving what most would call “more than enough” money, today's guest worked for another four years before pulling the trigger on early retirement. Is he on to something? Does the four-percent rule no longer work in 2024? Stay tuned to find out! Welcome back to the BiggerPockets Money podcast! Leif Dahleen, MD, the “Physician on FIRE,” was already financially independent when he discovered the FIRE movement. But rather than calling time on a successful healthcare career, he continued to beef up his nest egg. Why? Leif had determined that he needed forty-to-fifty times his annual expenses to feel comfortable walking away from his nine-to-five. Do more FI-focused folks need to follow Leif's formula to account for the unknown? We've all dreamed of what a day in the life of an early retiree might look like. Leif had his own expectations, but in this episode, he shares what he discovered when his schedule was suddenly clear. You'll also learn about the mindset high-income earners need to avoid squandering wealth, and why putting down roots in a low-cost-of-living area could be the difference between fast-tracking retirement and keeping up with the Joneses! We begin the show discussing the observation that left-wing lies of grave consequence are able to persist indefinitely without being challenged. That is due to the fact that we have no smart, effective, and principled political movement. One example is the COVID shots. Despite everything we know, they are still being expanded. We're joined later on by Dr. Angus Dalgleish, one of the most accomplished and experienced oncologists in the U.K. He warns that the vaccines are causing an unmistakable rise in all forms of cancers and that they are clearly much harder to treat. He provides all of the science, data, and clinical observations showing how the same way the shots make you more vulnerable to viral infections because they degrade the immune system, they are also causing cancer.

Ali discusses Rizwan Manji from Schitt's Creek and Aziz Ansari. Ali even discusses how he originally auditioned for the role of Ray Bhutani on Schitt's Creek and his own experience with using an accent in roles. We also discuss the case of Paul Sun-Hyung Lee on Kim's Convenience. They then discuss “The Problem with Apu”, the documentary by Hari Kondabolu, and Hank Anzaria. They discuss the historical example of Peter Sellers and “The Party”. Ali then talks about Hank Azaria's recent appearance on “Armchair Expert” with Dax Shepard and Hank's apology to South Asians. Then, Asif talks about so-called ‘miracle cures' in medicine and his contempt of practitioners who peddle them (21:19).  Ali then counters with the question of whether patients seek miracle cures because of a distrust of doctors and the medical system. They then discuss how distrust of the medical system can affect health outcomes and touch on the issue of race and its relation to medical distrust (and discuss Michael Che from Saturday Night Live). Asif then discusses what the medical community can do to improve trust.   The opinions expressed are those of the hosts, and do not reflect those of any other organizations. A Lahinch GP believes medical professions in Ireland are not attractive enough to keep students from emigrating. It comes as Mininster Simon Harris has announced a new scheme that will see Irish student doctors subsidised to study in Northern Ireland if they commit to a career in the HSE. UK students pay up to €10,724 a year in tuition fees for medical universities but the new arrangement would see Irish students paying €3,000 while the rest of the fee is covered by the State. IMO GP Committee Member, Dr Michael Kelleher, welcomes the new education subsidies but fears that emigration will still entice many of these students away from Ireland.

We live in a world where the white coat often defines a physician's identity. However, life is more than that. As a physician, it's in your best interest to recognize that being a physician is just one piece of the puzzle. Life, with its myriad experiences and roles, continues alongside the demanding profession. As a board-certified pediatrician, small business owner, parenting coach, mother, and wife, Dr. Cary-Thompson wears multiple hats, acknowledging that each role contributes to the rich tapestry of her identity.  From Academic Hurdles to Personal Growth The journey to becoming a physician is rarely linear. Dr. Cary-Thompson reflects on her academic challenges, particularly with organic chemistry, offering vulnerable insights into the hurdles she faced. From being a valedictorian with high expectations to encountering struggles in college, she shares the valuable lesson of perseverance and the need to adapt to different learning styles. Navigating the Evolving Healthcare Landscape The medical world is changing. To stay relevant and have a more fulfilling career, you need to stay informed about these changes. Dr. Cary-Thompson emphasizes the importance of awareness, not just about medical advancements but also about evolving patient care paradigms and technology integration. Her insights into the changing face of healthcare serve as a wake-up call for future physicians. Unfortunately, medical education is still not equipping physicians with the knowledge to navigate the complexities of their profession. So, it's up to you to educate yourself and be part of the change you want to see.  You can reach Dr. Cary-Thompson on LinkedIn, Instagram, Twitter, and her Website for more details about her work.  The Fine Print: Between the Lines of Parenting, Children, and Relationship-Building by Dr. Stacy Cary-Thompson   To learn more about how MedSchoolCoach can help you along your medical school journey, visit us at Prospective Doctor.  You can also reach us through our social media: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/MedSchoolCoach Dr. Erkeda's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/doctordgram/ YouTube: www.youtube.com/@ProspectiveDoctor

ATTENTION: Anyone with back issues in need of surgery MUST read this first.    Dr. Ardavan Aslie is a board-certified spine surgeon who received his undergraduate education at the University of California, Berkeley, where he double-majored inphysiology and genetics. He earned his MD from New York Medical College and completed his residency at St. Vincent's Hospital in New York City while working with some of the world's most renowned scoliosis surgeons. He received his spine surgery fellowship training at Harvard University. In addition to his private practice, Dr. Aslie has been active in researching and developing cutting-edge treatments for osteoporotic and aging spines.      Dr. Aslie's new hard-hitting exposé CORPORATE SPINE: How Spinal Surgery Went Off Track and How We Put it Right reveals eye-opening new research into the surprisingly common practice of using pedicle screws in spine surgery and despite overwhelming evidence that they are practically useless and cause harm down the road.   Seeing the money, the funding, and the support to cover up this dirty secret made me question if this was right – but I knew I had to write a book about uncovering the truth.   INTERVIEW HERE*****   CLICK HERE TO PURCHASE Each year, an estimated half-million people will undergo spinal fusion surgery in the US alone. In most cases, surgeons will implant rods and screws into a patient's fused vertebrae as part of the procedure. There's just one (enormous) problem: according to the published medical literature, the screws provide little to no benefit for patients. They do, however, provide billions in profit for a handful of medical device companies. In this meticulously researched and hard-hitting exposé, veteran California spine surgeon Ardavan Aslie, MD, sounds the alarm on this all-too-common but unproven standard of care. Despite overwhelming evidence that pedicle screws often do more harm than good, device manufacturers continue to push profits over patients. The failure of spine surgery to develop and utilize more effective surgical options has, sadly, led it to a dead end. It doesn't have to be this way. In Corporate Spine, Dr. Aslie explains how spinal surgery got to this low point, how patients can protect themselves, and how spinal surgery can get back on track to help, not hurt, the estimated 16 million Americans suffering from chronic back pain. Whether this describes you or someone you know, Corporate Spine offers an illuminating report from the frontlines that will both astound and empower.

How? How does the Catholic Church get millions of people to do whatever they say… no questions asked? It's actually quite easy. It's also brilliant. On this episode we discuss the exact strategy the Catholic Church utilizes to get people to do whatever they are told. To trust, obey… and never ask questions. We also discuss how the medical profession saw how effective this strategy was and decided to copy it. And copy it they did. To perfection. To the point where people do whatever their medical doctor tells them to do… no questions asked. I'm here to introduce you to a different sort of episode this week - which has a part one - which is what you will hear today - and a part two - released to you next week. Because I want to start sharing with you a little bit more personal and let you know what is going on behind the scenes. I have found myself at a bit of a crossroads wondering whether or not I need to leave the medical profession, and luckily enough I have a friend - Sarah Weiler - who hosts a podcast called ‘Knowing When To Quit' - because quitting or ending anything - brings up A LOT of emotions. And may or may not be what is required at any given moment. It is tricky terrain to navigate - and Sarah is here to help us do just that.I really hope you enjoy the insight from these episodes and get a better understanding of where I am coming from and how I want to support you all moving forward.Excerpt from Sarah's Podcast:I'm so excited about today's episode, which is part 1 of a 2-part series with Dr. Jude Galea- she's an A+E doctor of 20 years, the founder of the Witchy Women platform- and host of the podcast Dr. Body Mind Soul, both of which help people inform themselves about alternative therapies away from western medicine. Jude is changing the conversation about medicine and is in the process of going through a big personal transformation with her identity as a doctor. The episode you're going to hear today was recorded exactly a year ago in May 2022 when Jude was taking a break from being an A+E doctor and living in Mexico, setting up her business. At this point a year ago, she's very much still weighing up whether she should leave the medical profession and can see the pros and cons of both leaving and staying. In next week's episode, we will see where she has got to one year on in terms of the decision to leave. The process of putting these two episodes together side by side really highlights to me just how hard the decision to quit can be. It's rarely an overnight decision, it's complex and it can take a lot of processing.Thank you, Jude, for sharing your story and allowing us to accompany you in your exploration of what it means for you to quit or remain in the medical field. In this episode, we discuss:· Jude's relationship with being ‘a doctor' and why she decided to be a doctor.· When she first wanted to quit medicine· What medicine HAS given her over the years and why she's stayed· Jude's exploration of alternative therapies and what she's doing to change the narrative· What we mean by ‘healing' and how the body works naturally· Jude's experience with plant medicine and how it informed her decision to leaveJude's website: drbodymindsoul.com

‘The Medical Profession Has Been Destroyed': Dr. Richard Amerling on Following the ‘Guidelines,' Research Malpractice, and the Medical School Paradigm

“We've given up authority to central bodies of so-called experts, all of whom have agendas. The entire process is bought and paid for. If we don't take back our authority as physicians, it's all over,” says Dr. Richard Amerling, a nephrologist for over 30 years and a current board member and past president of the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons. “There's massive over-prescribing,” Amerling says. “The model that we have adopted now is to not reverse the disease, but to rather treat those diseases with pharmaceutical products.” Amerling volunteered at NYU/Bellevue during the first wave of the pandemic and is now a founding member and chief academic officer of The Wellness Company, which aims to correct what Amerling considers a failing medical system by focusing on natural approaches to cure illnesses instead of the “medical school paradigm,” which he says is intimately intertwined with big pharma's profit-driven push for vaccines and over-prescribing medications. “The current system is so corrupt … we have to start from scratch and build something alongside as an alternative,” says Amerling.
