It's one of the themes for the audio drama soundtrack from Hood: Noble Secrets, and the whole series by Spiteful Puppet. Today, we'll break it down and get into why and how it was made. You're listening to How I Make Music, where audio drama composers gets to tell their own stories. In this show, we break apart the music of fictional podcasts and take a trip into how it was made. My name is Samuel Pegg. I'm a composer from London, United Kingdom. And this is How I Make Music. Welcome back to How I Make Music, A Chance To Be Free from the audio drama Hood by me Samuel Pegg. Thanks for listening in. Hood was the first audio drama that Spiteful Puppet had ever put together. So we were all learning really what to do. But at the same time, we didn't have any conceptions of how to do it. So maybe that was a good thing. And it's a story of while Robin Hood, but in a way that you're probably not used to hearing it. Robin Hood is not the character you expect him to be. There are quite a lot of twists along the way. 2:06 ABBEY ROAD In London, there are just a plethora, you know, there's just a huge pool of fantastic musicians, and especially at the moment, there isn't a huge amount of work going on. So people are keen to come and record. I'm sort of classically trained, you know, playing in orchestras. But really, most of my training actually came through working with live musicians in the feature film world recording scores, the top studios in London and abroad. Next week, I'm going to go to Abbey Road to record something for an album I've written, got a string orchestra, and we've got some interesting baroque instruments as well, which will be quite fun. Oboe da caccia and oboe d'amore. They're both period instruments from I guess, the baroque period of music, so they're very old-sounding instruments. Here's a snippet of how it sounds. Yeah, it should be really fun day. 03:22 DREAMING OF ANOTHER LIFE This piece, a chance to be three plays between a poignant dialogue between Little John and Will Scarlett. John is dreaming of a different life - an alternative life - and Will is unsure, you know, maybe we need to play it safe and keep doing what we're doing. There are three sections to the cue. But the major shift is when they decide they want to take as they put it "one last roll of the dice". And they're going to pursue a rather daring and sort of risky plan, with the aim that they might get a royal pardon and finally have a chance to live a free life with their families rather than being outlaws. Little John is really looking for this alternative life where he can be with his family. He could be dying. 04:54 SOLO CELLO So the cue needed the emotional heart, but all honesty to it as well. It's hard to beat a solo cello. Gives it a sort of sense of gravitas. My friend, Lily Thornton just gave an absolutely beautiful performance here. Redemptive type theme. I suppose it's them just dreaming of another life. And then when there's a shift in the narrative, we bring guitars, drums and energy. Because the decision has been made that they are going to pursue this risky course of action. It's easy to write music when you have fantastic performances and an expertly written script. 06:17 FELT PIANO A felt piano does sound a little bit different to a typical concert grand. It's basically any piano where you put a layer of felt between the strings and the hammers. Here's how it sounds. It gives you a level of intimacy you wouldn't normally get. It's almost got a ballad sound. The chords are very simple. It's really meant to be music of the common people. It's not sophisticated. It's not clever. It's just you know, simple music and triadic harmony. It's the music that the people in the forest listen to. 07:13 PROPANE CANS These are some cheap propane cans, I think or some paint cans or something like that, that. Yeah, they just, they sound great. And we got two colors, one played with brushes, one played with fingers and then panned left and right. 07:48 OUTRO That's about it for this week's episode. In this weeks Happily Ever After, our Once Upon a Time podcast, we leave Storybooke and visit New York City for some shocking revelations. With Robin Hood helping an injured Gold our stories crash into Oz as Zelena shows up and throws Regina, Robin and Gold's futures up in the air. We recap all the goings on in "Heart of Gold," and found this a nice change of pace. The Robin back-story connected in fun ways to the modern day, but the we thought the real hero was Will Scarlett who taught Robin what it takes to be a real hero. In New York City we were both blown away by the Zelena/Marion reveal. Not only was it surprising but it also set a new path for Regina that we hope leads to an amazing and emotional conclusion on this fast closing season. Almost everybody has heard of Robin Hood, the famous English outlaw, a legend of books, film and TV. They say he lived around 700 years ago, but like most legends, he never really lived. Does anyone care that the man never existed? That the stories about him and his band of merry men – Little John, Friar Tuck, Will Scarlett and others are as much an invention as the supposed love of his life, Maid Marion, and the fictitious rivalry between him and the Sheriff of Nottingham?Nobody really minds. Not the thousands of tourists that visit the famous sites of Sherwood Forest, every year, posing in front of the enormous oak tree where Robin and his group of merry men supposedly used to hide out. Or those visitors to Nottingham castle, to the Robin Hood experience, in the same city, or to Robin’s grave nearby.The tourists are happy, and Nottinghamshire tourist board are happy too. Why wouldn’t they be? With the Robin Hood legend generating millions of pounds worth of income every year? In fact, it’s the main reason why tourists come to Nottingham, to seek out the facts behind the legend, to imagine how it might have been in those romantic times of old. Fighting for a just cause, to help the poor, against the nasty rich people who now seem to have won the battle in modern times.But all is not well in Robin Hood country, and the Nottinghamshire tourist authority have shown themselves to be very unlike the hero they say is one of them, trying to hold onto all the tourist money in the face of new competition from their poorer neighbour, Yorkshire.This neighbouring county, in 2004, caused a stir when they renamed an airport, taking the Robin Hood name. This, according to Nottinghamshire, was akin to firing the first arrow. Robin Hood airport, said Nottinghamshire, defrauds the public because it gives tourists the impression that Robin Hood came from and is associated with Yorkshire, instead of Nottinghamshire.‘Oh really?’ came the reply from Yorkshire. ‘Well, actually, Yorkshire has as many places associated with Robin Hood as Nottinghamshire. Take, for example, Robinhood village, where Robin used to frequently meet his men before poaching. Or Barnsdale, the possible birthplace of Robin according to some stories. And then there’s Loxley, another possible birthplace., and a name much associated with Robin. Tourists can even visit Robin Hood’s grave in Kirklees Hall, symbolising the spot where the dying Robin shot an arrow, asking his trusty friend little John to bury him where the arrow landed.So, to Nottingham’s dismay, the sleeping giant of Yorkshire seemed to be stirring and looking for ways of diversifying. Although the county has themes more properly considered their own, and has traditionally promoted its natural beauty, wallowing in its gorgeous hills and spectacularly rugged countryside as the main attraction for visitors, it now looked as if in the scramble for a bigger piece of the tourist pie, the county was about to exploit its connections with the legendary hero previously monopolised by Nottinghamshire.How did Nottinghmashire react? Well, they challenged Yorkshire’s right to exploit their hero, especially after so many years ignoring him. It didn’t matter that Sherwood forest used to extend into Yorkshire too, or that there were so many sites in Yorkshire associated with the legend. This would seriously damage the credibility of Nottinghamshire, and of course, its income from tourism. And Nottinghmashire was not going to stand for it.The matter went so far that it even reached the Houses of Parliament, and Members of parliament debated the legality of the situation.Well, that was in 2004. And what has happened since? Well, if you look at the official Yorkshire tourist board’s website, you’ll find no mention of the man in green. And curiously enough, Nottinghamshire’s own tourism website shows a change - they seem to have undergone a transformation in the way they present themselves, edging away from their reliance on Robin Hood and trying to promote an image more in line with the dynamic city of the 21st century, as suggested by a recent marketing report on Robin Hood and Nottingham. However, if you look carefully enough, you will still find links to the legendary figure of Robin. It is still too attractive a legend to be ignored. And although the Yorkshire vs Nottinghamshire controversy appears to have died down, there may well be another storm brewing within the same county. The Nottinghamshire town of Mansfield has recently boasted that it is home to the real Robin Hood and that an old oak tree in the city used to be the centre of Sherwood forest. It remains to be seen how Nottingham city will respond.What is clear, though, is the lucrative draw that the Robin Hood legend is. With tourism in Nottinghamshire recently estimated at being worth 1.2 billion pounds a year, knowing that a sizeable percentage of this is due to a fictitious man dressed in green with a longbow and felt hat, who can blame other places for trying to show that they too were home to Robin and his band of merry men.
