Feature: Bleak Week returns for Year 4, we talk to programmers behind the festival This year marks the 4th year of the American Cinematheque’s Bleak Week: Cinema of Despair, a weeklong festival dedicated to screening films with dark and bleak themes. In this year’s lineup, you’ll find screenings of Michael Haneke’s English adaptation of Funny Games, the Soviet anti-war film Come and See, and Studio Ghibli co-founder Isao Takahata’s Grave of the Fireflies. You’ll also find that the Year 4 lineup includes introductions/Q&As with the likes of Bill Hader, Elliot Gould, and Brady Corbet. Outside of the usual festival screenings here in Los Angeles, the American Cinematheque has partnered with other arthouse theaters across the country, and even The Prince Charles Cinema in London. Joining us to discuss this year’s iteration of the festival is Chris LeMaire, lead programmer on the American Cinematheque’s Bleak Week, and Grant Moninger, American Cinematheque’s Artistic Director. We also have our critics, Charles Solomon, Claudia Puig and Peter Rainer, commenting on what about the festival has allowed it to garner interest. Bleak Week runs from June 1-7. You can find this year’s Bleak Week lineup by clicking here or on bleakweek.com

So claimed the 1980 book The Golden Turkey Awards by Michael and Harry Medved regarding the film Plan 9 from Outer Space and director Edward Wood Jr AKA Ed Wood. But this very title is one of the reasons behind the revival of the film and of Ed Wood. The film has issues with continuity, set design, dialogue and a coherent ‘Plan 9' but something about the film appeals to a subset of film lovers. Perhaps it's the flashes of style, the joy in its failings or perhaps it's a recognition of something beyond the traditional and often formulaic nature of mainstream narrative filmmaking. Today I speak with two wonderful film academics and fans of the film. The Experts Mark Bould is a professor of Film and Literature at the University of West England, Bristol. He has written/edited extensively about science fiction cinema. Rodney F Hill is a Professor of Film at the Lawrence Herbert School of Communication at Hofstra University and has written extensively about film. We return with an episode on the final film of 2005, and the second from Mr. Steven Spielberg himself, with his historical drama MUNICH. Charting an account of Mossad assassinations following the massacre at the 1972 Olympic games, it is one of Spielberg's most polarising and daring works to date, with the decades long Israel-Palestine conflict front and centre as it - and we - explore the moral complexities at the centre of its story that are as relevant today as it was 20 years ago.Save the Prince Charles Cinema: https://you.38degrees.org.uk/petitions/save-the-prince-charles-cinemaFollow the podcast on Twitter (@RamblinAmblin), Instagram (@ramblinamblinpod) and Blusky (@ramblinamblin.bsky.social). Tom Goldstein was one of Washington, D.C.'s top lawyers, arguing 44 cases before the Supreme Court. Yet few knew he was also one of the world's highest-rolling—and most reckless—poker players, racking up millions of dollars in winnings and losses. Then his worlds collided. Our writer George Pendle has the full, jaw-dropping account. Then, after an almost 10-year absence, a new Bridget Jones movie is coming to theaters, and two of our writers, Carolina de Armas and Victoria Herman, couldn't help but wonder: How would Bridget navigate the Gen Z New York City of 2025? And speaking of movies, Stuart Heritage joins us from London with his report on the Prince Charles Cinema. For years, this independent movie theater has been beloved by such movie greats as Quentin Tarantino and Paul Thomas Anderson, who are just a few cinephiles who consider it perhaps the greatest movie house in the world. But now it is under threat of closure, and Stu will tell us if it is indeed the last picture show.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

It's the final episode of The Pod Charles Cinecast, presented by The Prince Charles Cinema, and our hosts Jonathan Foster and Fil Freitas have been hit with the dreaded writer's block. Tasked with coming up a worthy denouement to the show after nearly six years of antics, Jon and Fil find themselves truly stuck. How can you possibly do a big blow-off meta episode about the fifth and final instalment in the Die Hard franchise, 2013's A GOOD DAY TO DIE HARD? Will the boys defeat the burnout in time to deliver an episode worthy enough for our beloved fans? Will they be taunted by familiar voices of the past? Will this be the most meta of meta episodes? And lastly, the question everyone wants to know, will Jon and Fil finally get their coveted Nakatomi Podcast Award? All will be revealed in this epic Series Finale of The Pod Charles Cinceast! Thank you all for listening. Thank you for all your love and support over the years. We love you! Be Kind To Each Other! Farewell.

This week on The Pod Charles Cinecast, presented by The Prince Charles Cinema, our hosts Jonathan Foster and Fil Freitas are back with PCC Barman, PR team member, and San Francisco aficionado Robbie, to talk about one of the most insane action-thrillers from the 90s, RICOCHET! Starring Denzel Washington, John Lithgow, and Ice T, written by Steven E. de Souza, produced by Joel Silver and directed by Highlander director Russell Mulcahy, there couldn't be a better recipe for a hit, right? Right?!! Denzel stars as Nick Styles, a rookie cop, who sends Earl Blake (Lithgow), a psychotic hitman, to prison. Years later, Blake escapes prison with a well-calculated plan to seek revenge on Styles. This plan includes framing Styles with embezzlement of public funds, theft of pledge drive donations, and CP — before pumping him full of heroin and cocaine, giving him the clap, and framing him for murder. Seriously! What else can we say? It's a bat shit insane movie, that is only believed by seeing! And you should definitely see it! "I'm gonna do something far worse than kill you. I'm gonna let you live." For full listings and tickets visit: princecharlescinema.com If you enjoy the podcast, leave a Rating and Review! It really helps us out! LOOK OUT! It's only Films To Be Buried With! Join your host Brett Goldstein as he talks life, death, love and the universe with the absolute film-making legend JASON REITMAN! Jason's cinematic output over the last 20 years or more is undeniable, and you will have no doubt seen AT LEAST one of his movies and loved it. Maybe quoted it. Maybe re-enacted a scene or two... It's a fabulous thing then to hear this chat with he and Brett and confirm that Jason is indeed every single bit as film nerdy as you would have hoped. But also genuinely entertaining - these worlds are not mutually exclusive! It's a pleasure to hear about all the elements that make up who Jason is, including literally growing up on the Warner Brothers lot, loving comedians, depicting the pleasure of work in films, community of cinema, his father Ivan (some incredible history you'll hear there), surrender, James Acaster, and among so much more, the choreography and design of his new film Saturday Night! Oh and bonus shout to the Prince Charles Cinema too. A delight of an episode, you shall enjoy. Video and extra audio available on Brett's Patreon! IMDB INSTAGRAM SATURDAY NIGHT OFF MENU with JASON! Hello! Welcome to another edition of the exclusive audio commentary podcast hosted by me, David Hughes. For this episode, we're joined by Swiss director Peter Luisi for a fascinating discussion about his new film The Last Screenwriter, the first film scripted entirely by A.I. – specifically ChatGPT4.0 Now, before you grab your pitchforks and burning torches and lay siege to Rogue Commentary HQ, hear me out: I'm staunchly, even militantly anti-A.I. in the arts. But when I heard that London's beloved Prince Charles Cinema had called off what was to be the world premiere of The Last Screenwriter because of blowback it receive online, I was disheartened, because it seemed that Peter's film was a genuine attempt to engage with the question of A.I. in film specifically, and that we desperately needed to have the kind of conversation the film should have, and would have, provoked. Instead, by shelving the screening, conversation as shut down. As I said in my subsequent piece for Time Out, I don't think the screening would have been cancelled if the film was being presented as an experimental film by a known quantity such as a Michael Winterbottom, a Steven Soderbergh or Mike Figgis. While not exactly a household name in his native Switzerland, Peter co-wrote his country's excellent Oscar entry for 2007, Vitus, and is the writer, director and producer of last year's Bonjour Switzerland, the 8th most successful Swiss film of all time, and the biggest-grossing film in Switzerland since the advent of streaming. The Last Screenwriter is now available online, for free, at lastscreenwriter.com and there's no need to have seen it before listening to Peter's commentary, but whether or not you've seen the film – and I would urge you to give it a watch – I think you'll find Peter's commentary as fascinating as I did. Thanks Peter! Comments? Feedback? Suggestions? Email David *at * Rogue-Commentary *dot* com or send us a tweet. We have lots of exciting episodes in the works, so if you like what you hear – or just the idea – please subscribe, and remember to rate us wherever you hear this podcast – it'll really help us to keep going. Oh, and follow us on Twitter and/or Instagram to stay up-to-date on our forthcoming releases. Thanks for listening! A Synchronicity production, conceived and presented by David Hughes. This is a sample clip from our Patreon feed. If you'd like to hear this episode in its entirety and more episodes like it, subscribe for as little as $1 per month over at patreon.com/thepccpodcastIn this bonus edition of The Pod Charles Cinecast, your hosts Jonathan Foster and Fil Freitas step back into the territory of new film releases to talk about two spooky new films out in cinemas! One is genuinely spooky, and the other is spooky on account of how bad it is...First up, we dive into the hit new film from Shudder, Colin and Cameron Caire's LATE NIGHT WITH THE DEVIL. The film follows cinema journeyman David Dastmalchian as late night talk show host Jack Delroy. On Halloween Night 1977, hoping to get a much-needed ratings boost, Jack invites a parapsychologist and a young girl possessed by a demon on to his show. Soon, all hell breaks loose, and it is all captured in this found footage film.We dive into all angles of this one, what we liked, what we didn't, what we thought could have made it pop, and even the much maligned AI element of the film, that has turned away some viewers. Did it still deliver enough scares to be spooky delight? Tune in...Then, we turn our attentions to the most recent outing from the Ghostbusters franchise, GHOSTBUSTERS : FROZEN EMPIRE. The Ghostbusters are back from the Afterlife to deliver another film that pretty much rehashes the original Ghostbusters again. Be prepared, we (mostly Fil) go off on this one. So, if you like hearing us complain, this episode is for you.Silver lining? Are we turning around Finn Wolfhard (despite him doing nooooothing in this movie?) He is a fan of the Prince Charles Cinema, so he gets bonus points for that. Tune in for all this, and who knows, maybe even a fashion update..."The power of Christ compels you! The power of Christ compels you!"

Welcome back to the From Tailors With Love podcast, today we're talking to my new friend James Bond. Yes that's his real name, if you've seen the film The Other Fellow you'll know who I'm talking about. I was in Austin, Texas over the weekend. I put the word out I was in town and Matt Bauer the director connected James and I who lives about 40 miles outside of Austin. So he drove over to my hotel, we sat down had a beer in the lobby and we had a quick 10 minute chat which I enjoyed. No 00RoundUp today, it's a bit of a truncated show but hopefully normal service will be resumed next week. IF you're wanting the latest Bond news then please subscribe to the weekly newsletter, that comes out every Monday I do have the final part of the North Hollywood Shoot out to play you in the HEAT section of the podcast. This was the most brutal gunfight in modern American history and it drew close parellels to the movie HEAT. In fact I will be going to see HEAT this Friday at the Prince Charles Cinema so looking forward to that one. If you're going drop me a DM and we'll go for a cold one after. 0-15mins (James Bond & I) 15-26mins (North Hollywood Shootout Part 3) This show was brought to you by KHV Concept. This week on The Pod Charles Cinecast, presented by The Prince Charles Cinema, our hosts Jonathan Foster and Fil Freitas discover the dangers of artificial intelligence, while attending the Nakatomi International Podcast Festival 2023 in New Jersey. With Christmas just days away, the pair find themselves stuck in traffic, and a familiar voice from the past threatens to take over the podcast using ChatGPT and voice cloning technology. To make matters worse, a certain conspiracy loving former US Governor is recruited to terminate them. Can the boys make it through an episode about 2007's LIVE FREE OR DIE HARD aka DIE HARD 4.0 before their podcast or their very lives goes up in flames, or will the Dark Side of AI prevail and take over the show forever? This week on The Pod Charles Cinecast, presented by The Prince Charles Cinema, our hosts Jonathan Foster and Fil Freitas start knocking off local shopping malls, using Fil's Santa outfit from the cinema. The pair pose as a surly Santa and his oversized Elf, who by day try to stay sober enough to ask the kids what they want for Christmas, and by night rob the stores blind. It's the final week of NAUGHTY or NICE, and our Patreon backers were given the choice between two films from 2003 – BAD SANTA (Naughty) or ELF (Nice). Our listeners went 3-for-3 in the naughty camp, and decided to go for the drunken Santa Heist Movie! What could go wrong?Fresh off the success of Ghost World, Terry Zwigoff was tapped by Executive Producers Joel and Ethan Coen to turn their loose idea, that was adapted by Glenn Ficarra and John Requa, into a big screen Christmas classic, starring Billy Bob Thornton. The only problem was, Bob Weinstein was the real boss, and he made things annoying for everyone. Join us, as we talk how this film was made, who the Coen's original envisioned starring in the film, and how there came to be three different versions of the film. And there is plenty of love to the scene stealing duo of two late-great actors, John Ritter and Bernie Mac. "I'm on my f***ing lunch break, OK?"If you enjoy the podcast, leave a Rating and Review! This week on The Pod Charles Cinecast, presented by The Prince Charles Cinema, our hosts Jonathan Foster and Fil Freitas pull out all the Halloween decorations from the basement of the cinema, and plaster them all over the place to confuse the jolly cinema goers coming in for their Christmas cheer. It's week two of NAUGHTY or NICE, and our Patreon backers were given the choice between two films from 1993 – THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS (Naughty) or LOOK WHO'S TALKING NOW (Nice). Of course, our listeners hate us, and don't want to hear us wax lyrical about talking dogs, so we are forced to discuss every goth kid's favourite childhood movie. What's this? It's the Tim Burton produced, and Henry Selick directed THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS! Join us, as we dive into the beloved stop-motion musical fantasy, that blends Halloween with Christmas, and climbed its way up through the bowels of Disney as the red-headed stepchild to become a favourite son, all thanks to the lovely folks at Hot Topic. The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror is a Disney ride in which you get in an elevator that flings you up and down for about a minute. As you can probably tell from that description, it's rich with narrative potential, which is why we have 1997's Tower of Terror movie starring Steve Guttenberg and Kirsten Dunst, the movie we're talking about today. Guttenberg plays the improbably named Buzzy Crocker, a fraudulent journalist who is presented with the opportunity of a lifetime: head to the derelict Hollywood Tower Hotel to solve the mysterious disappearance of five people from the elevator on Halloween night, 1939. Will Buzzy be able to get to the bottom of what happened? Is the hotel haunted? And will his sister finally relent and let him take photos of his niece in an abandoned building? Listen and find out!
