[Video below] Floresville City Council has tabled action on its 2024-25 fiscal operating budget and tax rate, following an Aug. 22 public hearing. In the moments leading to a vote, several council members expressed that they still have additional concerns about the operating budget for the new fiscal year. “We have questions,” Councilman Jessica Rodriguez-Green said. “It has to do with the cost of living adjustments (COLA). There's a lot that needs to be fixed.” Rodriguez-Green — who is also a real estate agent — said councilmen were given specific city comparisons — including Alamo Heights, Boerne, Converse, Fair Oaks,...Article Link

This week on the podcast I speak with Kim Vaughan and Megan Durney of the Threefold Community Farm in Chestnut Ridge, NY, just outside of New York City. Threefold Community Farm is one of the key centers for the practice of biodynamic agriculture, as well as the training of biodynamic farmers through the Pfeiffer Center. Biodynamic agriculture is a spiritually-informed model of farming flowing from the work of Rudolf Steiner and it has had a big impact as one of the original forms of organic agriculture. Join us to learn more about the rich cultural community in which the Threefold Community Farm is located as well as about how they work to train students and farm interns in the heightened forms of perception and awareness that are required by biodynamics.Megan Durney is Co-Manager of Threefold Community Farm. She collaboratively oversees the vegetable, nursery plant, herb, seed and bee operations, heads up intern training, is an instructor in their One-Year Part-Time Training in Biodynamics, and serves as a board member of the Nature Institute. Megan joined the Pfeiffer Center as an intern in 2006 and became a staff member in 2010. In 2014-2015, she studied seed saving and CSA management under Harald Hoven at Raphael Garden in Fair Oaks, CA, later bringing that knowledge back to the Pfeiffer Center and launching a thriving CSA program, now in its ninth season. Kim Vaughan is Herdsperson and Dairy Manager of Threefold Community Farm, heading up the only dairy herd in Rockland County, NY. She supports all aspects of farm operations, fundraising and administration. Kim first met biodynamics at a year-long course with Harald Hoven at Raphael Garden in Fair Oaks, CA. She soon joined their CSA and became a star volunteer, serving on the steering committee, organizing fundraisers, and milking the cows on weekends. In 2016, Kim stepped away from Waldorf kindergarten teaching to become a full-time apprentice at Raphael Garden, followed by a summer at Fulcrum Farm in Grass Valley, CA, where she helped tend a small herd of Scottish Highland cows. She is currently in her seventh season living her dream job of professional cow cuddler. We are nearing the end of October, 1864, and we have another four battles on this week's episode. The battle of Decatur, TN was fought on October, 26th-29th, where Confederate General John Hood attempts to cross the Tennessee River, but the Union has other plans. For the next two battles, we head back to the Siege of Petersburg where Grant plans another two pronged attack on October 27th-28th. One at Boydton Plank Road to cut off a supply line to Petersburg and the other at Fair Oaks and Darbytown Road to attack the Richmond defenses. Our final battle we once again head back to Price's Missouri raid and the Second Battle of Newtonia on October 28th. This was the final battle of the raid and pretty much the end of Price's force. Some days, third grade teacher Kari Mitchell will have a lesson all planned out, having spent hours the night before perfecting it, only to meet the blank stares of her students the next day. “If they're looking at you like you have three heads, then you just haven't done what you needed to do,” Mitchell said. “I think this lesson in my head is going to go amazing, and then when I execute it, it doesn't go as planned. So sometimes I have to do a little revert, and that kind of throws me off my game.” Teaching third grade...Article LinkSupport the Show.

Katrina Turner lives in Fair Oaks, outside of Sacramento. She's 43, nonverbal and developmentally disabled. Katrina lives in a special kind of group home for people who need a lot of support day to day. She has a history of self-injury, so the group home is required to monitor her 24/7. But Katrina's family was alarmed when a staff member reported finding bruises and marks on her body. They suspected something was seriously wrong. This week, we're bringing you the results of a year and a half long investigation into allegations of abuse at one of California's most tightly regulated group homes, the “Illinois Home” in Sacramento County. Reporter Chris Egusa spent months collecting stories from parents, testimony from employees, and documentation from state agencies. And what he uncovered suggests that Sevita Health, a national health care company, may have allowed, and even contributed to the abuse of the very people it was supposed to protect.

Chloe Booth got a taste for interesting food at a young age when her mom went to culinary school. But it was years later as a teenager when her grandmother bulldozed a job path for Chloe at Del's Pizza in Fair Oaks. There she learned the ins and outs of the pizza business, from interacting with the regulars to managing 20 pizzas at a time in the ovens. After a break from restaurants Chloe saw a Facebook post about a new pizza place opening in Midtown. She went in for a stage shift and has never left. Today she is responsible for making most of the dough on a daily basis, sometimes for up to 170 pizzas in a single day. Listen to this episode to hear Chloe talk about the unique style of Pizza at Pizzasaurus Rex, the famed “dino sauce” and her hopes that one day there could be a horror themed bakery in Sacramento. A man from Decatur, Eric Lee Francis, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison and 10 years probation after pleading guilty to trafficking methamphetamine in Cobb County. The charges stem from a traffic stop in August 2021 when police found a large amount of meth and a glass pipe in Francis' car. In addition to the prison time, he has also been ordered to pay a $200,000 fine. The case was prosecuted by David Williamson and Elena Hernandez on behalf of the state, while Hina Asghar represented Francis at the plea. A 59-year-old man, Raymond Marti, was arrested and charged with impersonating an officer and possession of drugs outside a Marietta nightclub. He was wearing a shirt with "police" printed on the front, back, and sleeves, and when approached by a Marietta police officer, initially claimed to be a law enforcement officer. However, he later recanted and admitted to not being with the police. A search revealed he had a gun belt with a fake weapon, an outer vest carrier, and a stun gun, along with clear plastic bags filled with a white powdery substance believed to be cocaine. He remains held without bond in Cobb County jail. The first phase of the Chattahoochee Riverlands project, which aims to develop a 100-mile greenway of trails along the Chattahoochee River, has broken ground. The 2.7-mile stretch of trail in south Cobb, Georgia, will run from Veterans Memorial Highway to Mableton Parkway and is expected to open in 2026. The pilot project will act as proof of concept for the wider Riverlands project, which aims to connect 19 cities and seven counties. The $44m pilot is being funded by a combination of $26m in public money and $18m in private money. The project will transform a 100-mile stretch of riverfront from Lake Lanier to Newnan into a public space. Ser Familia, a Kennesaw-based nonprofit that offers family, social, and mental health services to Hispanic families in metro Atlanta, has received a $1 million grant from the Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta. The grant will be used to expand the CAFE model and hire staff to provide assistance for families in Fair Oaks, a community near Smyrna with a population of about 9,000 people. The median income in Fair Oaks is $43,000, which is half of the Cobb County average, and one third of its residents lack health insurance. Ser Familia plans to hire a Project Director, Case Manager, and Family Navigator to connect families to services and provide emergency assistance for urgent needs. Those who want to help the Fair Oaks community can contact Ser Familia or the Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta. The Cobb Collaborative has unveiled a new Little Free Library at Garrett Middle School in Austell. The nonprofit organization aims to put books in the hands of children and adults around the world. The new LFL will be available 24/7 with free accessibility and operates under the “Take One, Leave One” theory. Local officials and community members attended the dedication ceremony, where they spoke about the importance of literacy and encouraged students to pursue their dreams. This is the third LFL established in Austell this year as part of the Collaborative's goal to establish LFLs throughout Cobb County. About 99% of educators in Cobb County schools plan to return for the upcoming school year, an increase from last year's 98%. This high retention rate is attributed to Cobb's reputation as one of the top places to work in Georgia and the nation. Nearly 1,500 professionals attended Cobb's recent job fair at Truist Park, coming from as far away as California. Cobb Schools has also partnered with the University of West Georgia to offer advanced degrees to educators at no cost through Georgia's BEST, with about 4,000 expressing interest. Cobb Schools is hosting another job fair on June 8, primarily focused on filling classified support positions but with teaching positions also available. #CobbCounty #Georgia #LocalNews - - - - - The Marietta Daily Journal Podcast is local news for Marietta, Kennesaw, Smyrna, and all of Cobb County. Motorists in Austell pulled over for faulty tail lights, broken rearview mirrors or other damage to their cars could now be in for a gift card instead of a ticket. Thanks to a partnership between Advance Auto Parts and the Austell Police Department, officers responsible for traffic citations have $500 worth of gift cards from the auto shop. Instead of making drivers pay, the city will pay drivers to be safer on the road, giving them a gift card to fund repairs so that they comply with the law. Austell Police Chief Scott Hamilton was joined by other officers in the city's police department Thursday at the Advance Auto Parts on Veterans Memorial Highway to announce the collaboration. Mark Strenta, an Advance Auto Parts vice president, said this is the company's first partnership with any Cobb city, and the first to happen in one west of Atlanta. Advance Auto Parts already has similar partnerships with Sandy Springs and Lilburn, and Strenta hopes to expand to Peachtree City soon. Cobb County leaders were in the schools Thursday to read to students as part of Read Across America Day. Established by the National Education Association in 1998, Read Across America now offers year-round programming to encourage reading among students, and it does so by promoting books that students can both see themselves reflected in, as well as those that present experiences that may be different from their own. It also still marks March 2 as Read Across America Day, and all of March is National Reading Month. Smyrna Mayor Derek Norton read to fourth-grade students at Norton Park Elementary to recognize the event. As part of her “Read Across Cobb tour,” Cobb school board Nichelle Davis read to “Smyrna Elementary STARS” to celebrate the day. Another Cobb school board member, Leroy Tre' Hutchins, read to students at Riverside Elementary in Mableton. Kennesaw State used three straight 3-pointers deep into the shot clock, including what may have been the biggest shot in the program's Division I history, to hold off Lipscomb 80-71 in the semifinals of the ASUN tournament at the KSU Convocation Center on Thursday. The Owls will now host the conference championship game for the first time. They will get a rematch with co-regular season champion Liberty on Sunday at 3 p.m. with the winner earning the automatic bid into the NCAA tournament. It will be the first time KSU will play in the title game, and it will be the first game to be shown on national television from the Convocation Center, as ESPN 2 will broadcast it. If the Owls win on Sunday, they will clinch a spot in the NCAA tournament for the first time since the program moved to Division one. The Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area, stretching along the river for 48 miles through metro Atlanta, posted its highest ever number of visitors in 2022, the National Park Service announced Thursday. Some 3.5 million people are estimated to have visited the recreation area last year, representing an increase of about 9% from 2021. That outpaces the river's park service neighbor in Cobb, Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park, which had about 1.3 million visitors in 2022. Among all National Park Service units nationwide, the Chattahoochee ranked 21st in attendance. The park service said to avoid crowds, visitors are advised to visit NPS dot gov. A Cobb County police officer was involved in a car wreck Thursday morning. Police spokesperson Shenise Barner said the collision occurred around 7 a.m. near Atlanta Road at Bingham Street, in the Fair Oaks area. There were complaints of minor injuries, but Barner said this was not a “major crash.” Cobb's Selective Traffic Enforcement Unit is investigating the incident. The Kennesaw Parks & Rec Department will have the annual Bunny Breakfast on April 1 at the Ben Robertson Community Center in Kennesaw. There will be two seatings available: 8 to 9:15 a.m. and 10 to 11:15 a.m. Attendees will be treated to a buffet including hot and ready pancakes, scrambled eggs and sausage, as well as a medley of fresh fruit and breakfast sweets. Everyone's favorite cottontail will be making his way from table to table to say hello to all the boys and girls. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own camera to capture photos with the Easter Bunny. Tickets are $8 per person and can be purchased online or at the Ben Robertson Community Center. Advance purchase is required. Tickets are non-refundable after March 24. Children ages two and under do not need a ticket if they will be sitting in laps. New this year, experience the beauty of Smith-Gilbert Gardens at the annual Egg Hunt on April 1 with a combo Bunny Breakfast/Egg Hunt ticket. The Egg Hunt is open to children up to nine years of age. Easter themed crafts will be available at the Egg Hunt, as well as organized garden games. #CobbCounty #Marietta #LocalNews - - - - The Marietta Daily Journal Podcast is local news for Marietta, Kennesaw, Smyrna, and all of Cobb County.
