This year witnessed the passing of one icon of the early days of broadcasting, Marty Engstrom, whose residence in Fryeburg, Maine was but one place that he planted his flag but not the one for which he will be most remembered. That local was at 6,288 feet above sea level inside and outside of the Mount Washington Weather observatory atop New England's highest peak Mount Washington, known as Agiocochook by the Abenaki people. The Smile that Charmed Northern New EnglandMarty Engstrom ended his weather forecast every night except his very first this way.Though his nightly weather forecast from the top of Mount Washington was rarely more than one minute long, it was a minute that charmed the folks of the tri-state region to the extent that today, more than 20 years since his retirement, he is remembered with such fondness. Marty was, for all intents and purposes, our very first rock star.
It's Friday, May 5th, A.D. 2023. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. By Adam McManus (Adam@TheWorldview.com) Videos reveal indoctrination & militarization of Chinese Uyghur kids In 2019, there were 900,000 Uyghur (pronounced WE-gir) Muslim children in Chinese boarding schools who have been separated from family members, reports Bitter Winter Magazine. Their parents, according to Family Research Council, are being held in concentration camps also described as extrajudicial detention facilities where detainees are subjected to brainwashing and other forms of torture, including rape. The schools and dorms are an important part of the cultural genocide perpetrated through the indoctrination of the Uyghur children. This is criminal. The minors are isolated and under the absolute control and influence of unrelated and “foreign” persons. Under any circumstance other than government involvement, this would be deemed “radicalization” or “extremism.” A camp survivor, named Zumrat Dawut, obtained video clips of the kind of indoctrination that is taking place right now. Listen to the Chinese dialogue after which I'll offer the English translation. MAN: “What is your dream?” UYGHUR BOY: “My dream is to be a member of the People's Liberation Army when I grow up. I want to be a border soldier warrior to defend the borders of our country.” MAN: “Good. “Do you know what kind of people the People's Liberation Army are?” UYGHUR BOY: “The People's Liberation Army are very brave men who love the motherland very much and are not afraid to sacrifice their own lives.” MAN: “But have you thought about it, as you want to be a border warrior? When the enemy invades, to protect the borders of our homeland, will you charge forward bravely?” UYGHUR BOY: “I will dash forward bravely.” MAN: “Not afraid of sacrifice?” UYGHUR BOY: “Not afraid of sacrifice.” The disturbing audio in all four videos is Chinese, but they are captioned in English. Video 1, Video 2, Video 3, and Video 4. Matthew 18:6 says, “If anyone causes one of these little ones—those who believe in Me—to stumble, it would be better for them to have a large millstone hung around their neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea.” Will Tucker Carlson host his own GOP presidential debate? Since Tucker Carlson was fired by Fox News, he has expressed interest in moderating his own GOP candidate forum, outside of the usual strictures of the Republican National Committee debate system, reports The Washington Post. The idea, which he's discussed with Donald Trump, the front-runner for the party nomination, would test his sway over conservative politics. And it would take a jab at his former employer since Fox is hosting the first official primary debate, which Trump has threatened not to attend, according to the New York Post. 1,900 pro-lifers opposed a proposed Maine abortion bill On Monday, 1,900 pro-lifers turned out in Maine to oppose an extreme pro-abortion bill, LD 1619, introduced by Democrat Governor Janet Mills, that would legalize murder in the womb after viability. According to WMTW and Fox News, it was the most well-attended public hearing of the year at the Maine State Legislature. It lasted for an incredible 19 hours from 12:00 noon on Monday through 7:00 a.m. Tuesday morning. Ann Dowdy, one of the 675 pro-lifers who signed up to speak, was holding her toddler named Rejoice. DOWDY: “I think that it is wrong for us to be killing our babies when they could be living. My daughter was born at 24 weeks gestation here in Augusta almost two years ago.” And Penny and Eric Winter, a married couple, waited in line in the rain Monday morning for two hours just to sign up to testify. PENNY: "I believe that viable children need to be protected." ERIC: "We're not talking about something done to some helpless tissue. This is a body with arms and legs, a heartbeat, and a face that is exposed to abortion by this bill." Charles Stanley's grandson sold famed preacher's items on eBay And finally, the grandson of Charles Stanley has received backlash after selling some of his grandfather's personal items online less than two weeks after the pastor's death. Matt Brodersen, who is the youngest child of Stanley's daughter, Becky, revealed these details in a YouTube video. BRODERSEN: “What's up, guys? It's Matt, my grandpa, Dr. Charles Stanley, just passed away on April 18, 2023. We all got to go through this stuff and find things that we would keep. I found a few things that I thought were really awesome. I'm going to put them on eBay, and there's going to be a bid. You can auction for it if you want it. “This one is a 13 by 13-inch picture that you can hang on your wall. It is signed by my grandpa on August 30, 1996. It's something that I'd love for one of his fans to have. But that's not all. Whoever wins that picture frame, I'm going to include some bonus gifts -- things that I found in his desk that were there when he passed away. I'm going to give them my grandpa's coin collection that was in his desk. Those will be your bonus gifts. “The second item that I'm auctioning off is a pocket watch I found in his desk that has his engravings on it – C.F.S. -- for Charles Frazier Stanley. And, if you win this one, then I'm going to send you the rest of the watches that I found in his desk.” On eBay, Charles Stanley's engraved pocket watch sold for $2,375 after 63 bids, while the framed and signed picture of Charles Stanley sold for $3,650 after 40 bids. In response to the negative feedback, Brodersen said this in his defense. BRODERSEN: “I've already got some negative feedback on eBay for wanting to auction off some of my grandpa's things. I've got this guy on eBay who's already, like, ‘No grandson of Dr. Stanley would run this ad one week following his grandfather's death.' “I'm a human being who has bills to pay, and you know how the economy is. No, I don't really have shame in selling some of his stuff. And whoever wins is going to help me pay my bills, which I desperately need right now. I'm not afraid to admit that.” In an interview with The Christian Post shortly after his grandfather's death, Brodersen shared how Stanley supported him during dark times. After blowing his inheritance money on drugs and alcohol, he became depressed and suicidal. Stanley told him, "Matthew, I want you to always remember, the most important thing in life is to obey God and leave all the consequences to Him." In John 14:23, Jesus said, “Anyone who loves Me will obey My teaching.” Close And that's The Worldview in 5 Minutes on this Friday, May 5th in the year of our Lord 2023. I'm Stacey Simms and these are the top diabetes stories and headlines of the past seven days. XX In the news is brought to you by T1D Exchange! T1D Exchange is a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving outcomes for the entire T1D population. https://t1dexchange.org/stacey/ XX The copay cap on insulin may come back before the Senate in a few weeks. Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer say he'll bring tht issue back up.. after Republicans blocked it in a sweeping climate, inflation and health care package passed by the Senate on Monday. Speaking on MSNBC's “The Rachel Maddow Show.” Schumer said, “We're going to come back and make them vote on that again.” Seven Republicans still voted with all 50 Democrats, three short of the 60 votes needed, and it is possible more Republicans would support it if it came up as a standalone measure. It's not clear if this would again be a copay cap or in fact a cap on the actual price of insulin for all, including the uninsured. https://thehill.com/policy/healthcare/3594003-schumer-senate-will-vote-again-on-35-insulin-cap-after-gop-blocked-it/ XX Dexcom is pushing back the timeline for a U.S. launch the G7. That's after the FDA raised questions about the device's software during a review. This has something to do with how the G7 and it's smartphone apps deliver alarms to users. Looks like maybe a limited release in the 4th quarter of this year and full rollout in 2023 if there aren't any other hiccups. As you likely know, the G7 is nearly 60-percent smaller than the G6, it's transmitter and sensor all in one and has a much shorter warmup period. It's been approved in Europe since March. https://www.fiercebiotech.com/medtech/dexcom-resubmit-g7-glucose-monitor-software-fda-review-pushing-back-us-launch XX One type of once-a-week basal insulin gets the go ahead to move forward with clinical trials in the US. Gan & Lee Pharmaceuticals says it's investigation drug called GZR4 is more stable with less day to day variation than once a day basal insulin. There are a few of these weekly insulins in trials, none yet approved. Gan & Lee is also doing trials of the drug in China where they are already a big player in the insulin market. https://www.ganlee.com/detail/668.html XX XX Good news for Senseonics, makers of the Eversense implantable CGM. Shares were up on second quarter earnings and future expectations. I don't generally report on stock market moves of diabetes companies, but the past few years have been a bit iffy for Senseonics and there was speculation on whether this CGM option might not be available in the US. They partnered with Ascensia Diabetes Care and got the six month approval for Eversense earlier this year. https://www.massdevice.com/senseonics-stock-q2-2022/ XX A new call for comments to the FDA but the deadline is TODAY august 15 at midnight eastern time. I'm going to read directly from a post by Joanne Milo in the CGM in the Cloud off topic group. Joanne's been a guest of the show and leads the loop and learn group – she writes. “We have until August 15, 2022 to provide comments on FDA changes to the way CGM display and alarm systems are regulated. This has implications for remote monitoring and automated insulin delivery systems, both commercial and DIY. We request your assistance in helping the FDA and device providers (FDA considers software for treatment of disease to be a device) understand the benefits of real-time CGM access and the risks we carry by not having ubiquitous real-time access to our diabetes device data. We hope you will choose to spend a moment to add your voice to the #WeAreNotWaiting chorus. They provide some text which I'll link up in the show notes as well as the links to this post and the FDA comment portal. https://www.regulations.gov/commenton/FDA-2018-N-1910-0047?fbclid=IwAR2WAtGl3vjTUonamNdlBtAu_pg2-xQOVy8bSqG2peLCUz2eq8R8OgLqtHQ https://www.facebook.com/groups/CGMITCOFFTOPIC XX The T1D Exchange Registry is a research study conducted online over time, designed to foster innovation and improve the lives of people with T1D. The platform is open to both adults and children with T1D living in the U.S. Personal information remains confidential and participation is fully voluntary. Once enrolled, participants will complete annual surveys and have the opportunity to sign up for other studies on specific topics related to T1D. The registry aims to improve knowledge of T1D, accelerate the discovery and development of new treatments and technologies, and generate evidence to support policy or insurance changes that help the T1D community. By sharing opinions, experiences and data, patients can help advance meaningful T1D treatment, care and policy. The registry is now available on the T1D Exchange website and is simple to navigate, mobile and user-friendly. For more information or to register, go to www.t1dregistry.org/stacey XX Team of 50 individuals living with type 1 diabetes will raise awareness and funds for their chronic illness SAN MATEO, Calif., (Aug. 3, 2022) – Going the extra mile this year, global diabetes nonprofit Beyond Type 1 was named an Official Charity Partner for the 2022 TCS New York City Marathon, taking place on November 6. Beyond Type 1 will be among the 500 official charity partners providing thousands of runners the opportunity to run in the world's most popular marathon. This year's Beyond Type Run team includes nearly 50 runners across the United States, Canada, Ecuador and Australia, who are raising awareness and funds for type 1 diabetes as ambassadors for Beyond Type 1, showcasing how they live beyond their diagnoses and supporting crucial efforts and programs for others affected by this condition. First-time Marathon Runner Kyle Banks, known for his tour with the Broadway cast of The Lion King, is the team captain. “The Beyond Type Run team displays the ultimate resilience and strength as they run the marathon. If it weren't for the team jerseys or the technology attached to their bodies, you'd never know they were living with a chronic illness,” said Beyond Type 1 CEO Deborah Dugan. “We are grateful to them for helping us raise awareness, and we thank all of our sponsors for their generous support and donations to the team.” Since 2017, Beyond Type 1 has had roughly 150 people with type 1 diabetes run the TCS New York City Marathon through the New York Road Runners (NYRR) Official Charity Partner Program. “The TCS New York City Marathon serves as one of the world's largest fundraising platforms supporting hundreds of charities and philanthropic efforts,” said Christine Burke, Senior VP of Strategic Partnerships, NYRR. “We are very proud to support Beyond Type 1 and the incredible impact they have made to the diabetes community as they raise important funds to support people with diabetes.” The NYRR Official Charity Partner Program offers an opportunity for nonprofit organizations to raise funds to support their missions and services. Participating charities can offer guaranteed entry to runners who fundraise on their behalf. Since its inception in 2006, the TCS New York City Marathon Official Charity Partner Program has raised more than $400 million for more than 1,000 worthy nonprofit organizations across the globe. Prior to the start of the official program, the New York City Marathon had served as an outlet for individual philanthropic runners since the 1980s. https://beyondtype1.org/beyond-type-1-nyc-marathon-2022/ XX Morgan Shepard book Morgan Shepherd So happy to announce my book “ T1D Looks Like Us! I started Diabetes Connections back in the summer of 2015. I'm not sure I had a number of episodes in mind when I kicked off the show, I just knew I wanted to make a podcast for and about the diabetes community. Thanks for tuning in all this time! For episode 500, I've turned hosting duties over to Cristina Frank, a TV news anchor who lives with type 1. We talk about how the episodes come together, what's worked (and what hasn't) and what I might add to the show going forward. We also think about how the community has changed and why the highest praise I could take for this show is that it's authentic. Welcome back, listeners! This week we are covering Cult stories. We had several problems editing this week, so we apologize if this episode is a bumpy ride. But before we dive into it, last week... Maire covered the fictional "Creepy Kid" story. It came from reddit/nosleep, a story entitled "I had a disturbing conversation with my 7-year-old daughter" by u/samhaysom. Shannon covered the unfortunate real life case of Lukas Mironovas. She got her info from a WGME article published on 12/19/19 called "Maine Teen Sentenced for Killing Mother" and an article from WMTW published 11/25/19- "Teen Sentenced for Murder of Maine Mother."
Students and teachers from a Maine Elementary school are raising money for their service dog who has had a “ruff” year. The school has started a GoFundMe to help pay for Ory, the service dog’s three surgeries. The goal of the “Pennies for Paws” fundraiser is $20,000, which is needed to cover the operations. According to WABI5, the community has also launched a webpage to help bring in more money. The 16-month-old has hip dysplasia, degenerative hips and two torn ACLs. Jess Jones, an Ed Tech at the Willard School, expressed that the surgery will help improve the pup’s quality of life once the pain is gone. “She’s only 16 months and she deserves that opportunity to have a great life,” Christen Suratt, a teacher at the school told WMTW. “The vet said her life will be amazing once this is done and dealt with.” Ory has been a huge asset to the school by helping students with special needs calm down when having emotional outbursts. Research suggests that therapy/service dogs can decrease stress and give students emotional support. Some other benefits of using therapy dogs include helping to improve social cues and teach empathy in students. Studies also prove that student’s have a reduction of stress and less anxiety when around a therapy dog. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
