For over a decade now Mike Mulligan has been co-hosting a popular sports talk morning show on WSCR 670 The Score, first with fellow writer Brian Hanley and then another fellow scribe, David Haugh. The shows overcame the ratings lead of Mike and Mike, then the highly successful show on ESPN pitting Mike Greenberg with Mike Golic. But “Mully,” as he's best known, had been doing radio since the late 80s while also covering the Bulls and their first three-peat, then the Bears. He laughed when it was noted the coaches he covered were the studious Phil Jackson and the enthusiastic and gifted story teller, Dave Wannstedt. But balancing both writing and doing morning radio became too much so he gave up the writing job.Mulligan is up every weekday morning at 3. “It's just a discipline. You just have to make sure you're monitoring everything that happens but you're also making sure getting five, six hours of sleep.”The Bears are the number one team in Chicago and recently went through a stunning day that included the mysterious resignation of defensive coordinator Alan Williams and quarterback Justin Fields blaming part of his difficulties on coaching. It was fuel for fire for Mully and Haugh and everyone else in town. But Mully is also and avowed White Sox fan who has seen the team have arguably its worst season ever both on and off the field. But, as Mully has said often, “I'm living the dream.” Not bad for a native Chicagoan who gets to talk about the exploits of the city's teams on a daily basis."Tell me a story I don't know" is partnered with Last Word on Sports Media Podcast and sponsored by Mr. Duct. When you think of story telling, that's what writers do. And four long time Chicago sports writers shared some fascinating stories over the course of their careers. Coincidentally, all four worked for the Chicago Tribune during their careers. Rick Morrissey is currently a columnist for the rival Sun Times and he relates an episode involving a line drive and his computer. Harrowing, yes and hilarious just the same. Teddy Greenstein, now a senior editor at PointsBet, discussed several run-ins with the rather tempestuous Sammy Sosa. David Haugh, co-host on WSCR The Score's morning show, recalls stories with two legendary baseball stars, one from the Cubs and the other from the White Sox. And Bob Sakamoto, recently retired from his role as assistant athletic communications director at DePaul University, digs back for an encounter he had during the 1987 NBA finals with a red hot movie star. Decades and decades and decades of covering Chicago sports and its athletes and coaches/managers can be heard in one place on this episode! Our third podcast during encore week features one of the most celebrated and highest paid sports journalist in the broadcast industry. And to think, the first person ESPN's Mike Greenberg work with professionally was yours truly. “Greeny” as he's best known, has carved out a spectacular career from his partnership with Mike Golic on the radio program "Mike and Mike" to his current TV gig entitled “Get Up” to his additional responsibilities as the primary NBA host. But during his growth period at Chicago all sports radio station WSCR The Score did Greeny get a plum assignment he called one of the best experiences he ever had, covering Michael Jordan in Spring training as a member of the Chicago White Sox. “On the first day there must have been 200 reporters. Ted Koppel hosted Nightline from the ballpark. Within two or three days there was the Chicago SunTimes, Tribune, Daily Herald and me. And that was it.” Greeny wasn't done yet. “You might recall Jordan went 0 for his first 18. He was quite upset. So it was a rainy night in some small park and there couldn't be more than 300 people in the stands. Jordan swings out of his shoes and it winds up being a dribbler up the third baseline and he beats it out for a hit. So the game ends and in this tiny clubhouse they're dumping beer on him. And as we're walking out something moved me to turn around and look at him. He's sitting on a bench with a cigar, drenched in beer and had a smile, a look of satisfaction on his face that rivaled anything I'd ever seen from him."And there's plenty more including the many books Greeny has written. Tomorrow we feature TNT's NHL analyst Eddie Olczyk whose life took a turn to the left last week.Hope you are enjoying encore week on "Tell me a Story I don't know" and make sure to follow/subscribe to the SportsMediaWatch.com podcast feed on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google, etc. for more great episodes!!Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
