"We made something we could dance to." The Chicago juke and footwork pioneer reflects on 40 years of Dance Mania and his longtime collaboration with the late DJ Rashad. Anyone with a passing interest in footwork and juke will know of Traxman. Corky Strong has a long history in the world of Chicago dance music, first releasing on the legendary Dance Mania label—which is now celebrating 40 years—in the mid-'90s. He's since split his productions between ghetto house, juke and footwork, releasing alongside titans of Black American music like the late DJ Deeon and DJ Rashad. Strong went on to become a member of DJ Rashad's renowned Teklife crew, and he was one of the creators of the legendary mixtapes on coloured cassettes that became a prototype for juke and footwork's evolution. In this Exchange, Strong speaks with RA's Kiana Mickles in New York about how he first became introduced to this world through his cousins, with whom he'd listen to funk and slow jams, Parliament Funkadelic, Farley Jackmaster Funk, James Brown and a variety of hip-hop throughout the '80s. The pieces eventually fell into place, he recounts, when he met the "mysterious kid" DJ Rashad in 1997. Together, they helped shape the music scene in Chicago, and the rest, as they say, is history. Over the last few years, Strong has been celebrating footwork's past by putting out a series of albums called Da Mind of Traxman on Planet Mu. He's just released his third volume, and his first since 2014, which was crafted with the help of fellow Planet Mu artist Sinjin Hawke. Strong took on A&R duties to collate the best from hundreds of tracks dating back to 2005. The series is notable in part because it's a catalogue of footwork and its Chicago lineage—juke and house—as well as these genres' soul, funk and rock roots. Strong talks to Mickles about what Chicago's music scene was like in the '80s and '90s, why footwork was so rooted in dancing and where the genre is heading in the future. August 1989.The final year of ‘the finest pop decade ever'™️ is moving along quite nicely thank you very much. There's most definitely a change in the air, and we don't mean the launch of the FOUR channel Sky TV network. Relax everyone, UK Gold and TOTP reruns are coming in three years! No, real change was coming. The second summer of love in 1988 (sorry Danny Wilson, probably a year out) as witnessed on the utterly imperial NOW 11, 12 and 13 had demonstrated that the 90s were calling and they would be decked out in dayglo. And most importantly a new positivity was being felt in the air, across the airwaves and through the pop we were all immersed in.And let's not beat about the bush, folks, 1989 was a seismic year for music. Let me indulge you listeners:Disintegration, Three Feet High and Rising, Doolittle, Technique, Club Classics Volume One, Raw Like Sushi, The Stone Roses, , Like A Prayer, Hats, The Seeds of Love, Flowers In The Dirt, Paul's Boutique, The Raw And The Cooked…And of course Neither Fish Nor Flesh (A Soundtrack of Love, Faith, Hope & Destruction). And so, to our favourite compiler of variously compiled pop. 1989 saw four (yes, as many as that!) new NOW, That's What I Call Music albums. Why four, I hear you cry? Well, because the summer was adorned with the first new dance volume since 1986, an album that, NOW fans will know, featured Love Can't Turn Around by Farley Jackmaster Funk - the first House track to break the UK. And 1989 was time (not for the guru, that's 1990 of course) to celebrate how dance was back, Back, BACK!And this additionally delicious dance volume enabled the BIG summer fifteenth volume to go deeper into the year's genres. So step forward delights including Soul II Soul's era defining classic, Paul McCartney's Hofner bass-adorned celebration of TV dinners, Swing Out Sister's mind-bending, sumptuous sixties throwback and De La Soul's daisy-age makeover of Hall and Oates (the ultimate backward nod to the outgoing 80s?).What a time to be on the edge of seventeen (deliberate Stevie Nicks nod, there) as this listener was!And joining me for this sepia-tinged and frankly tear-stained 1989 nostalgia fest through NOW 15 is the music journalist and author of the 33 1/3 book on George Michael's Faith, Matthew Horton.Discover how homemade mixtapes (his mums AND his own) inspired many a house party and achieved (almost) legendary status. Which cassettes were stuck in his Walkman at the outdoor Lido pool, why goth stars and American soap operas need to come together, which rapper performed for Matthew (and others, obviously) at Bristol University and (YES!) why the love for Fish and Flesh will never go away. And amongst these glittering 1989 delights, experience the moments when I actually say positive things (almost) about our friends from the north The Beautiful South and Hue and Cry.Join us on the glorious beach (best cover ever™️ - Jude Rogers) as we head back to NOW15. I think it's going to be alright. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Welcome back guys, here on ESOA Podcast. Unfortunately, once again my guest for this episode cancelled just before the end. This immediately inspired me to record a musical special for you. I decided on a Chicago House and Techno special. Alongside Detroit, Chicago is clearly an important cornerstone. Without it, techno and house would not exist in their current form. Think about the impact that tracks like Move your Body or Acid Tracks still have today. Frankie Knuckles began playing early electronic productions back in 1977 in the then newly opened, rather run-down but well-equipped Warehouse club. A sound that continued to develop into later house and techno, with great, unforgotten names such as Marshall Jefferson, Larry Heard, Adonis, Tyree Cooper, Farley "Jackmaster" Funk, Frankie Knuckles, Steve "Silk" Hurley, DJ Pierre, Phuture, Mike Dunn, K-Alexi Bad Boy Bill, "Fast" Eddie Smith, Ron Hardy and Derrick Carter made history. The sound was released on labels such as DJ International, Dance Mania, Jack Trax, Underground Records and Trax Records. Friends, let this sound inspire you for the next two and a half hours. Have fun with ESOA Podcast 072 by myself, Thomas Schubert. Thanks for tuning in. For episode 86 of Club Management, we dive into the pulsating beats and vibrant history of house music legend DJ Sneak, as he shares his journey from the sunny shores of Puerto Rico to the bustling streets of Chicago. In this episode, Shannon chats with DJ Sneak about his immersion into the diverse musical landscape of Chicago, where he found inspiration in underground house music and honed his DJing skills amid a crowded field of talent.DJ Sneak's musical journey began with a vibrant blend of salsa and meringue in his native Puerto Rico, setting the stage for his exploration of diverse rhythms. Upon arriving in Chicago, he found himself immersed in the pulsating energy of the city's iconic warehouse and block parties, where influential DJs like Farley Jackmaster Funk left an indelible mark on his evolving sound. The self-proclaimed “house gangster” played a pivotal role in the emergence of 'filtered disco' tracks, with his iconic release "You Can't Hide From Your Bud," setting a new standard for funky, disco-infused house music worldwide.Sneak spoke about his remarkable career, working with house music legends like Daft Punk and Louie Vega, and his involvement in Chicago's graffiti-tagging community. He also touched on his outspokenness on social media, how he's grown since ditching Twitter, working at the legendary Gramaphone Records in Chicago, and the relentless work ethic that continues to drive his prolific output of music.    Tracklist ~My Dub - DJ SneakDamage - DJ SneakYou Can't Hide From Your Bud - DJ SneakSupport the show

Steve Silk Hurley is one of the founding fathers of Chicago house. His surprise hit hit in 1987, Jack Your Body, was the first house track to hit #1 in the pop charts and announced his arrival as a major talent. In this wide-ranging interview he recalls sneaking out of the house to go to parties, breaking his father's strict curfew, makes a claim for his version of ‘I Can't Turn Around' being the first house track ever made and tells the story of how Farley Jackmaster Funk's hit version was an idea originally stolen from him.

It's a Saturday night in April 1985 and a queue is gathering outside Raffles nightclub in, well pretty much every town and city across this sceptred isle. Feverishly excited boys and girls wait and dream of Malibu and coke, Quatro and ice, whilst expectant beams of pink neon shoot out from beyond the velvet rope and the intimidating bouncers (possibly both called Dave). Through the door, past the cloakroom, up the stairs and then it happens - the anthems of Saturday night come together with the vibrant buzz, dry ice and positively sticky underfloor carpet to create the magic of the weekend. This is CLUB CULTURE and the beats are going to hit you! However, if you were too young to experience this evangelical experience of mid 80s provincial nightclubbing, then you needed a guiding hand to take you onto the metaphorical dancefloor. And in 1985, there was only one team that us teens would trust to keep us moving all night long (as long as it wasn't too late and didn't impact on a school night or watching The Tube.)Step forward, NOW Dance - The 12” Mixes!Following four genre defining compilation albums, 1985 saw the release of the first ever non-numbered NOW and it shone a disco filtered light across the club anthems of the mid 80s. And importantly, presented them in extended, longer, remixed and - yes - 12” form. Pop! Soul! Funk! Disco! Go-Go! Belouis Some! If they were big on the dancefloor, they were here! The big chart names like Phil Collins, The Power Station and Eurythmics flexed their beats and rhythms alongside era defining club tracks by the like of Loose Ends, The Cool Notes and more. Here was a snapshot of a defining moment in club culture - as the UK charts were only months away from the coming of House in the form of Colonel Abrams, Farley Jackmaster Funk, the beat was still going on, but would probably never be the same again.Join writer, broadcaster and Clangers expert, Tim Worthington as we revisit NOW Dance - The 12” Mixes. Along the way also discover what pop tracks frightened Tim as a child, the connection between Channel 4's animation Pob and dance culture, which NOW album caused him to spill Dr Pepper all over a brand new sofa and why TV themes of the 80s are more closely linked to this album than you may think! And also discover why remixer and producer Ben Liebrand will probably not be re-re-returning our big, chunky 80s mobile phone calls.

Your Body, Can You Feel it?, Your Love, etc. TRUE HOUSE STORIES W/ DJ SNEAK SPECIAL SHOW 2021 #001 - PART 2 DJ Sneak (born Carlos Sosa; November 5, 1969) is a Puerto Rican born American DJ and record producer raised in Chicago, Illinois, United States. He is noted as being one of the second wave of Chicago house producers, (alongside Derrick Carter, Cajmere/Green Velvet, Gemini, James Curd and Paul Johnson) as well as a member of the vanguard of late-1990s United States house producers. In 1983, Sneak moved to Chicago from Puerto Rico, where his early musical experiences and influences were rooted in salsa, merengue and Latin orchestras. In Chicago, Sneak found inspiration in underground house music, warehouse parties and "old school" mix tapes from the early pioneers, Farley Jackmaster Funk, Ralphi Rosario, Steve Hurley and local radio station shows played on WBMX. Sneak earned his nickname rocking graffiti-tags and began working at retail stores as an airbrush artist. His development as a DJ came while working regular mobile DJ jobs and local nightclubs. Sneak focused on his music production and started his independent label - Defiant Records. In 1994, while still working at local store Gramophone Records, Sneak met Cajmere (Green Velvet) owner of Cajual and Relief Records. Cajmere released three of Sneak's catalyst tracks, which helped bring him international recognition. In Ibiza, Sneak has participated in several events with Ministry of Sound, Cream, Manumission, and Miss Moneypenny's. Sneak currently resides in Los Angeles, California, US. Lyrics by DJ Sneak are featured in the Daft Punk song, "Digital Love", from their 2001 album, Discovery. In 2001, Sneak launched a new record label Magnetic Recordings, where he has been releasing new music, with compilations to come, along with the introduction of new musical talent. Source: Wikipedia
