What's the worst thing you ever saw at a sports game? Someone throw a battery at a Make-a-Wish kid? Sure, if you're from Philly, but what if you were from California. On today's episode: we'll talk about zombies and crucifictions and collapsing buildings before we even get into it; we're going to watch the shortest baseball game of all time; and we're going to cut off one of your limbs in one of the more claustrophobic ways possible. And if you were listening on Patreon… you would hear of one of the most extreme, but very different kind of arm-severing examples of self-rescue in history; the story of a must-have, closed-casket-funeral-friendly rescue device and the absolutely brutal, very public early use of it; and a really dirty, smutty explanation how earthquakes work.By popular request, we present The Loma Prieta Earthquake Disaster of 1989! So, we'll end up talking about my history with zombies and a popular crucifixion and a slowly collapsing building - two of three events set in San Francisco itself – all before we settle in to watch the shortest baseball game of all time. Not just that, we're actually going to (for the first time ever) interrupt a safety segment with a Patreon-exclusive retelling of the shockingly horrific and awful just-kill-me-now-already story of Aron Ralston. You might remember him as the guy who chewed his arm off after an 800 pound boulder pinned him to a canyon wall in Utah. He didn't actually chew his arm off though. What he did was at least a thousand times worse. We'll also do a little retelling of the great 1906 San Francisco Earthquake. Can't not do a San Francisco Earthquake disaster without at least bringing it up.Celebrity guest appearances include world famous author and travel enthusiast, Bill Bryson; crucified magician and Jesus' friend, Saint Andrew; real estate suckers Joe Montana and Kevin Durant; all four Beatles; sports broadcasters, Al Michaels and Tim McCarver; newscaster, Ted Koppel; crosstown World Series players Dave Stewart, Mike Moore, Jose Canseco, Dave Parker and Terry Kennedy. All older episodes can be found on any of your favorite channelsApple : https://tinyurl.com/5fnbumdw Spotify : https://tinyurl.com/73tb3uuw IHeartRadio : https://tinyurl.com/vwczpv5j Podchaser : https://tinyurl.com/263kda6w Stitcher : https://tinyurl.com/mcyxt6vw Google : https://tinyurl.com/3fjfxatt Spreaker : https://tinyurl.com/fm5y22su Podchaser : https://tinyurl.com/263kda6w RadioPublic : https://tinyurl.com/w67b4kec PocketCasts. : https://pca.st/ef1165v3 CastBox : https://tinyurl.com/4xjpptdr Breaker. : https://tinyurl.com/4cbpfayt Deezer. : https://tinyurl.com/5nmexvwt Follow us on the socials for moreFacebook : www.facebook.com/doomsdaypodcast Instagram : www.instagram.com/doomsdaypodcast Twitter : www.twitter.com/doomsdaypodcastTikTok:  www.tiktok.com/@doomsday.the.podcastIf you like the idea of your podcast hosts wearing more than duct tape and bits of old Halloween costumes for clothes and can spare a buck or two, you can now buy me a coffee atwww.buymeacoffee.com/doomsday or join the patreon at www.funeralkazoo.com/doomsday

Charles Osgood Wood III , was the given name of a television icon, we all knew simply as Charles Osgood.  He was the host of the CBS News "Sunday Morning" broadcast for 22 years but long before that he was the voice for the Osgood File on CBS Radio. It was that voice that made him instantly recognizable to almost everyone in America. He stood out in the media landscape for his understatement and his genuine kind nature. He was a poet, a musician, and an extraordinary storyteller.  He seemed to have always been around. It was that understatement that made you feel like you were listening to a kindly relative who had always been there and that perhaps you did not really appreciate like you should have until you realized he was not there any longer. I think we have all missed Charles Osgood since the day he retired in 2017. I know I have missed him. In a world that seems to be half crazy all the time, I enjoyed his simple uplifting stories and his amazingly insightful poetry early on each Sunday morning. His famous two minute commentaries, "The Osgood Files", were always insightful and thought provoking and his poems were exactly perfect for the moment you had tuned in for on those Sunday Mornings. So , in this episode, we look back on his amazing life and career, with tributes from his friends and his journalistic colleagues, we here wisdom from him in his interviews and speeches, and we found a good cross section of his many commentaries known as "The Osgood File" , we hope it is a fitting tribute to the CBS Newsman known as the networks poet in residence, and we will even listen in for a song or too. Charles Osgood was 91, and we can honestly say of this icon of television news, "We were glad to know you" and as we bid farewell we will simply say Godspeed, Mr. Osgood, We will see you on the radio, until we meet again. Ranked 4th as one of the best American History Podcasts of 2024https://podcasts.feedspot.com/american_history_podcasts/ Questions or comments at , Randalrgw1@aol.com , https://twitter.com/randal_wallace , and http://www.randalwallace.com/Please Leave us a review at wherever you get your podcastsThanks for listening!!

In the season finale of our 11th Season, we have the equivalent of the "Who Shot J.R.?" episode of DALLAS mixed with all the excitement of the end of a Roger Moore "James Bond" movie. In the second part of our look at "A Bloody Christmas" we look back at the suddenly swift, and deadly fall of Romanian Dictator Nicolae Ceaușescu.  He had been the absolute ruler of the nation of Romania for nearly 25 years. In that time, he had been the Communist Ruler with at least some good relations with the West because he had often been at odds with his fellow Communist in the Soviet Union.  He had even condemned the invasion of Czechoslovakia. Inside his country he had ruled with an iron hand, and a well armed secret police force and as Ted Koppel would say he had created an atmosphere where it was as insane as having an insane asylum run by the inmates.  Romania under Ceausescu was every bit as bleek and foreboding a place as the Dracula mythology had portrayed it to the world.  Then suddenly, after a bloody confrontation in the town of Timisoara, while the dictator was mid sentence in one of his long speeches on the balcony of the Palace of the Parliament, the people rose up, Ceausescu panicked and fled, and the country plunged into absolute chaos in what would be the only bloody revolution amongst all the Communist collapses in Eastern Europe.   This episode, using an extraordinary ABC News Special Report by Ted Koppel titled "The Death of a Dictator" and mixed with contemporary news reports, and interviews with historians, we will tell this most incredible, almost to strange not to be fiction tale of the fall of Nicolae Ceaușescu , from the panicked speech , to the frantic helicopter escape, to the car chase with two stolen cars, and finally the three hour trial and immediate execution. This is an incredibly wild ride through the history of the bloodiest revolution during the communist collapse that changed the World.  A link to the video "The Death of a Dictator " by Ted Koppel of ABC News is available in the chapters section  Questions or comments at , Randalrgw1@aol.com , https://twitter.com/randal_wallace , and http://www.randalwallace.com/Please Leave us a review at wherever you get your podcastsThanks for listening!!

In this episode we draw the crisis to a close. Jimmy Carter has lost his bid for re-election and Ronald Reagan is on the verge of the Presidency.  In this episode we take you through the story of Jimmy Carter's frantic final days as he races against time to end the hostage standoff before he leaves office. We will also take a look at the media who covered the story, mainly for ABC News. For it was under the leadership of ABC News President Roone Arledge that a new show was born, "Nightline" which had been known for a while as "America Held Hostage" . Arledge had a vision of a late night news program that could compete with "The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson" but he had yet to find the type of continuing story that could build a steady audience. They had covered the death of Elvis Presley but that had been sort of a one night event. The Hostage Crisis would be that story he had looked for and it would captivate the nation for 444 days. By the time the story was over, ABC News had a hit on its hand, "Nightline with Ted Koppel" was born, and they would cover those final days  where Jimmy Carter would literally work, with no sleep,  to the very end of his Presidency to insure that every single American Hostage would come home from Tehran, Iran,  alive.  Questions or comments at , Randalrgw1@aol.com , https://twitter.com/randal_wallace , and http://www.randalwallace.com/Please Leave us a review at wherever you get your podcastsThanks for listening!!

Meeting near the birthplace of Thomas Jefferson, the panel produced a landmark report entitled “Threats to Symbols of American Democracy” that prophetically identified vulnerabilities that would later tragically unfold during the 9-11 attacks. The Dallas Crime Commission awarded its first-ever Excellence in Crime Reporting Award to Riggs for his reporting on identity theft and Mexican Drug Cartels. The American Bar Association awarded him its Silver Gavel award for his investigative series Free To Kill which uncovered systemic corruption inside the Texas parole and prison systems.Prior to his journalism career, Riggs served as an investigator for the late Congressman Wright Patman of Texas who was Chairman of the House Banking Committee, Joint Economic Committee, and Joint Committee on Defense Production. As the Chief Investigator for the Joint Committee on Defense Production, Riggs spearheaded inquiries that touched on Watergate and Pentagon bribery scandals. He reported to the joint leadership of Representative Patman and Senator William Proxmire. In this role, Riggs held a Top Secret security clearance from the Department of Defense and received training from both the GAO and U.S. Army. The Committee's investigation of a defense contractor's bribery scheme contributed to the passage of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act.Riggs currently belongs to the FBI's North Texas Chapter of InfraGard which was formed in response to the 9/11 terror attacks. This week, this man of all seasons joins us in the chat lab for the first of two parts breaking down the birth of the "Outlaw" movement in country music, a revolution clearly led by two records by country music legends Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson. In this week's installment we thoroughly dissect Willie Nelson's 1975 classic "Red Headed Stranger"! It can handle more nuanced prompts compared to previous releases, and is multimodal, meaning it was trained on both images and text. This is a fun episode looking back at one of the purely fun events of the past half century. It was the Bicentennial of Declaration of Independence, the celebration of our nation's founding. It was an event like no other in our history and Gerald Ford, a man who had not sought the Presidency at all,  got to enjoy presiding over it all. He gives all appearances of having enjoyed every moment of it too.So in this episode we simply hop on for the ride as we open up the Smithsonian's New Air and Space Museum, enjoy the tall ships as they sailed through New York Harbour, enjoyed a celebratory event at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts on July 3rd, with two speeches on America, one given by President Gerald Ford and the other by a football All American,  Heisman Trophy Winner, and one of the NFL's leading all time rushers, former Buffalo Bills Running Back O.J. Simpson.  ( at that moment no one knew what the future would hold for him) Then we follow President Ford to the great city of Philadelphia, to hear a speech at Freedom Hall by the President to commemorate this historic moment on July 4, 1976. Then we head back to the nation's capital to welcome the most famous and perhaps most unlikely of guests who will stop over to help our nation celebrate its 200 years of freedom. A royal visit from none other than Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth the Second of United Kingdom, the monarch of the very nation whose yolk we had thrown off exactly 200 years and two days before.....TAG: Talking About Guns“Talking About Guns” (TAG) is a podcast created to demystify a typically loaded and...Listen on: Apple Podcasts Spotify Questions or comments at , Randalrgw1@aol.com , https://twitter.com/randal_wallace , and http://www.randalwallace.com/Please Leave us a review at wherever you get your podcastsThanks for listening!!

After the collapse of the Soviet Union in the early 1990s, the timing appeared perfect to bring Sesame Street to millions of children living in the former Soviet Union. With the Muppets envisioned as ideal ambassadors of Western values, no one anticipated just how challenging and dangerous this would prove to be. In Muppets in Moscow: The Unexpected Crazy True Story of Making Sesame Street in Russia (Rowman & Littlefield, 2022), Natasha Lance Rogoff brings this gripping tale to life. Amidst bombings, assassinations, and a military takeover of the production office, Lance Rogoff and the talented Moscow team of artists, writers, musicians, filmmakers, and puppeteers remained determined to bring laughter, learning, and a new way of seeing the world to children in Russia, Ukraine and across the former Soviet empire. With a sharp wit and compassion for her colleagues, Lance Rogoff observes how cultural clashes colored nearly every aspect of the production—from the show's educational framework to writing comedy to the new Russian Muppets themselves—despite the team's common goal. Brimming with insight and nuance, Muppets in Moscow skillfully explores the post-Soviet societal tensions that continue to thwart the Russian people's efforts to create a better future for their country. More than just a story of a children's show, this book provides a valuable perspective of Russia's people, their culture, and their complicated relationship with the West that remains relevant even today. In 1990, soon after his release from prison, Nelson Mandela traveled to New York, and was interviewed by Ted Koppel in front of over 1,000 people at City College. To start the event off, a man in the audience all but demanded that Mandela denounce Fidel Castro, Yasser Arafat, and Muammar Gaddafi. On today's full episode of The Breakdown I'll play Mandela's brilliant and timeless answer, where, in short, he tells the man, “You make a big mistake to think that your enemies are my enemies.” Kyrie Irving is not our enemy. I know this man personally. He is a kind, compassionate, giving, inquisitive soul. He is a dedicated father and son. And I have seen him, time and time again, actually BE THERE for Black people at our time of need. Not just with words, but with resources. Does that mean I support everything he says or does? Or vice versa? Of course not. I can't name a single soul on Earth in which that is true for me. I don't even agree with everything my own wife or mother say or do. And that can never be the standard. I'm not here to pit Kyrie and Kanye against each other, but they aren't the same person and aren't guilty of the same things. Kyrie has owned his words and actions. And apologized for the ways they caused offense. Now, I will literally defend the right of Jewish people for that to not be enough for them. That's their business. But we simply cannot allow other people to define for us who we cancel and who we don't. That ends with us having no leaders and heroes. Our third podcast during encore week features one of the most celebrated and highest paid sports journalist in the broadcast industry. And to think, the first person ESPN's Mike Greenberg work with professionally was yours truly. “Greeny” as he's best known, has carved out a spectacular career from his partnership with Mike Golic on the radio program "Mike and Mike" to his current TV gig entitled “Get Up” to his additional responsibilities as the primary NBA host. But during his growth period at Chicago all sports radio station WSCR The Score did Greeny get a plum assignment he called one of the best experiences he ever had, covering Michael Jordan in Spring training as a member of the Chicago White Sox. “On the first day there must have been 200 reporters. Ted Koppel hosted Nightline from the ballpark. Within two or three days there was the Chicago SunTimes, Tribune, Daily Herald and me. And that was it.” Greeny wasn't done yet. “You might recall Jordan went 0 for his first 18. He was quite upset. So it was a rainy night in some small park and there couldn't be more than 300 people in the stands. Jordan swings out of his shoes and it winds up being a dribbler up the third baseline and he beats it out for a hit. So the game ends and in this tiny clubhouse they're dumping beer on him. And as we're walking out something moved me to turn around and look at him. He's sitting on a bench with a cigar, drenched in beer and had a smile, a look of satisfaction on his face that rivaled anything I'd ever seen from him."And there's plenty more including the many books Greeny has written. Tomorrow we feature TNT's NHL analyst Eddie Olczyk whose life took a turn to the left last week.Hope you are enjoying encore week on "Tell me a Story I don't know" and make sure to follow/subscribe to the SportsMediaWatch.com podcast feed on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google, etc. for more great episodes!!Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
