In this episode of Shoujo Sundae, Giana and Chika review episodes four through six of My Love Story with Yamada Kun at Lv999! In episode four, Runa, Eita's younger sister, is abrasive and rude toward Akane at the Forest of Savior guild meetup. After parting ways, Runa personally reaches out to Akane, seemingly to extend an olive branch, and makes plans with her for that upcoming Saturday. In episode five, Runa fails to show up to a restaurant to spend time with Akane, but instead sends a Rurihime superfan to go in her stead, all the while convincing that superfan that Akane was Rurihime. This results in this middle-aged man coming on very strong, and Akane attempting to escape, but he goes so far as to follow her into the bathroom. Eventually, Yamada figures out what was going on, and he, Eita, Runa, and Mr. Kamota all go to rescue Akane from the situation. In episode six, Akane's computer suddenly short circuits, preventing her from gaming. In this episode of Shoujo Sundae, Chika, Giana, and cosplayer Jahara Jayde review episodes one through three of My Love Story with Yamada Kun at Lv999! In episode one, Akane is dumped by her cheating boyfriend, and fluctuates through stages of grief. At an in-person event for a game her ex-boyfriend, Takuma, introduced her to, Akane bribes an attractive guy to pretend to be her boyfriend in front of Takuma and his new lady. This attractive guy turns out to be a locally famous professional gamer, Yamada. In episode two, Akane wakes up at Yamada's apartment after getting too drunk the night before, and worries that something happened between them. At home, Akane realizes she lost her necklace at Yamada's place. In episode three, Akane learns she's been frustrating her guild members by placing low level gear inside their shared storage, and doesn't log into Forest of Savior for several days. After reconnecting with the guild at Yamada's behest, Akane attends an IRL meetup at a cafe with her guild members, eager to find out the true identity of the cute, sweet guild leader, Rurihime. Hey, shounen fans! Today, we're diving into Frieren: Beyond Journey's End for the very first time! We meet the elven mage Frieren and her adventuring party: Himmel the Hero, Heiter the priest, and Eisen the dwarf. After defeating the Demon King (or Lord?), they part ways after a decade-long journey together. Fifty years later, ensuing the death of Himmel, Frieren wishes she had taken the time to get to know him better. Years later, while visiting Heiter, she sort of stumbles into having an apprentice - a war orphan named Fern who Heiter had been looking after. After Heiter dies, Frieren and Fern begin their own journey to learn spells. These first two episodes packed an emotional punch and introduced us to a fantastical new world. In this episode of Shoujo Sundae, Chika and Giana review episodes sixteen through nineteen of Kimi Ni Todoke! In episode sixteen, the tiny men Pin hallucinates recap the first fifteen episodes of the series. In episode seventeen, Pin begs Kazehaya to bring Sawako over to rid him of what he believes is a curse, but is actually a cold. Afterwards, Kazehaya walks Sawako home under the stars, and they almost share a kiss. In episode eighteen, Chizu buys Ryuu a birthday present. She also confides in Sawako about her love for Ryuu's older brother, Toru. When Ryuu goes to visit Chizu, she ends up kicking him out because he almost spotted his gift, causing a rift between them. Ayane breaks up with her terrible boyfriend. In episode nineteen, Chizu invites Sawako and Ayane over for a sleepover to help Ayane after her breakup. The girls end up going to Ryuu's and join their party for a heartbroken Jo. In this episode of Shoujo Sundae, Chika and Giana review episodes ten through twelve of Kimi Ni Todoke! In episode ten, we learn about Chizuru's and Kurumi's experience in middle school together, when Kurumi manipulated Chizuru into “helping” the other girls in their class confess their love to Kazehaya. Kurumi continues to be friendly with Sawako and eventually confides in her that she has feelings for Kazehaya. In episode eleven, Sawako declines to help Kurumi pursue Kazehaya. Kurumi tries to convince Sawako that her feelings for Kazehaya aren't special, and urges her to speak more with Ryuu after he saves her from a rogue softball pitch. In episode twelve, Kurumi schemes to set up Sawako and Ryuu, but the two end up strengthening their bond in friendship, not romance. Ryuu confides in Sawako about some secret feelings he has. In this episode of Shoujo Sundae, Giana and Chika review episodes seven through nine of Kimi Ni Todoke! In episode seven, Sawako, Chizu, and Ayane go out for ramen to a local shop. Sawako learns that the shop is owned by Ryuu's family, and they live above the store. They spend the evening hanging out in Ryuu's room and invite Kazehaya over. In episode eight, Sawako's friends encourage her to call them by their first names. However, she struggles to call Kazehaya “Shota”. Pin forces Kazehaya to become a committee member for the upcoming sports festival. His middle school friend, Kurumi, is also on the committee, and it's evident she's trying to become closer to Kazehaya. Kazehaya helps Sawako practice soccer for the sports festival. In episode nine, Sawako is enchanted by Kurumi and hopes to become friends with her, and the feeling seems to be mutual... or is it? Kazehaya struggles to call Sawako by her first name. In this episode of Shoujo Sundae, Chika and Giana review episodes four through six of Kimi Ni Todoke! In episode four, rumors rapidly spread about Chizu and Ayane, pinning Sawako for starting them. Ayane and Chizu overhear Sawako claim that they aren't her friends and leave before they can hear the full context of the conversation, which hurts and confuses them deeply. In episode five, further rumors about Sawako's presence being a detriment to Kazehaya, Chizu, and Ayane cause her to distance herself from them. Kazehaya speaks with Sawako about this, and he urges her to discuss her feelings with Chizu and Ayane about their friendship. Later, Sawako confronts girls she hears spreading rumors in the bathroom to try and settle them once and for all. In episode six, the school gathers around the girl's bathroom after hearing about a fight going on inside. In this episode of Shoujo Sundae, Giana and Chika review the first three episodes of Kimi Ni Todoke! In episode one, Kuronuma Sawako struggles to interact with her classmates after being branded as cursed because of her resemblance to Sadako from the horror film The Ring. Her classmates even refer to her as “Sadako”. Despite this, she is able to speak with a popular boy, Shouta Kazehaya, who invites her to the school's test of courage event. Through this, Sawako becomes friendly with two more classmates: Yoshida Chizuru and Yano Ayane. In episode two, Sawako leaves her umbrella to cover a puppy left out in the rain on the way to school, and, later, Kazehaya decides to adopt him. The next day, Sawako's class has a seating arrangement change, and nobody wants to end up with their desk near hers. Kazehaya, Chizu, Ayane, and Ryuu choose to sit near her, bringing her to tears. In episode three, Kazehaya and Sawako chat after school, and Kazehaya brings his new puppy, Maru-chan, along. He learns that she daydreams about teaching others. The next day, Kazehaya asks Sawako for help with schoolwork, and the rest of the class flocks over to be tutored by her. She smiles genuinely, taking her classmates off guard. Ayane and Chizu overhear rumors about themselves and are told by the girls spreading them that they were started by Sawako. Grab your spoon, and let's dig in! In this episode of Shoujo Sundae, Giana and Chika review episodes forty-seven through fifty of Fruits Basket (2019)! In episode forty-seven, Yuki and Manabe discuss Tohru and the nature of Yuki's feelings towards her. Tohru's class decides to rewrite Cinderella to fit their odd casting choices. In episode forty-eight, it's showtime! Cinderella-ish is a hilarious success, despite an out of character outburst from Tohru at the end of the show, causing Kyo to wonder about her true feelings towards him. In episode forty-nine, Yuki makes sure to include Machi in the student council's plans to celebrate the end of the school year together. It's also time for the New Year's banquet at the Sohma estate, which results in an unsettling exchange between Akito and Yuki around forgiveness of one another. Tohru spends the holiday with Kyo, Kazuma, and Rin at Kazuma's dojo. Tohru's wish for the new year is for the Sohma's curse to be broken. In this episode of Shoujo Sundae, Chika and Giana review episodes thirty-eight through forty of Fruits Basket (2019)! In episode thirty-eight, Yuki meets new members of his student council. Kakeru Manabe and Yuki have an argument after school when Manabe asks Yuki regarding his feelings about Tohru. The boys have a heart-to-heart conversation, which breaks up the tension between them. In episode thirty-nine, Shigure steps in for Tohru's parent-teacher conference when she learns her grandfather won't be able to attend. Yuki contemplates inviting his own parents to the conference. Hatsuharu and Rin finally reunite. In episode forty, at parent-teacher conferences, Ayame arrives to help Yuki through the very uncomfortable meeting with his mother. The three argue in front of Mayu, and the result brings Yuki some closure. In this episode of Shoujo Sundae, Giana and Chika return to Fruits Basket (2019) and begin season two! In episode twenty-six, Yuki joins his fellow student council members: Manabe and Machi, and he certainly doesn't know what to make of them. Motoko's embarrassing outburst in the student council room is difficult to see unfold. In episode twenty-seven, Kazuma shows just how exemplary of a father he was, and still is, to Kyo. Kyo and Tohru share a deeply emotional conversation over late night somen regarding their futures. Chika and Giana are unquenchably intrigued, wondering what Shigure's writing is like. Shigure's laundry analogy perfectly encapsulates the feeling of being overwhelmed. In episode twenty-eight, Yuki steps out of his comfort zone yet again to try and better understand his flamboyant brother Ayame by visiting his clothing shop. We get a glimpse into Yuki's difficult relationship with his family, including Ayame growing up. Despite their differences, the brothers strive to meet in the middle so that they can begin to mend their bond. This is possibly the most vulnerable episode we've released on the main podcast. In this episode of Shoujo Sundae, Giana and Chika review episodes four through six of A Sign of Affection! In episode four, Yuki, Itsuomi, Rin, and Kyoya go on an adorable, mundane double date. It's a wonder Kyoya hasn't picked up on Rin's very obvious feelings. Itsuomi asserts his place by Yuki's side when he stands up to Oushi on the street. In episode five, Itsuomi's string of suave moves take the ladies' breath away. Kyoya's emotional distance from Rin sends up a red flag. Rin, as the world's best wingwoman, sets Yuki and Itsuomi up to continue an important conversation that had been interrupted. Unfortunately, we learn that Yuki's family has never taken the time to learn sign language, whereas Itsuomi is making a point to learn it for her. In episode six, Itsuomi's beautiful confession to Yuki in the snow is a shoujo moment for the history books. He also makes sure to clear up any confusion regarding his relationship with Emma. In this episode of Shoujo Sundae, Chika and Giana review episodes ten through thirteen of Sasaki & Miyano! There's a few live fanfic moments, so please indulge alongside the girlies in some sweet, wholesome fantasies. In episode ten, Sasaki casually confides in Kuresawa, showcasing his ease with talking to his love interest's friends. While out in public, Sasaki is able to ease Miyano's worries about others speculating if the two of them are dating, which truly awakens Miyano's feelings. However, Miyano's lack of confidence in his feelings is a little frustrating. In episode eleven, Miyano's determination to confess to Sasaki in just the right way is adorable. The absence of homophobia throughout Sasaki & Miyano is a breath of fresh air in the world of LGBTQ+ media. Hanzawa's unclear feelings towards Miyano are a bit confusing. Chika shares part of her coming out story. In episode twelve, Sasaki maturely reconsiders his actions in episode eleven. We have an absolutely beautiful sunset confession scene! Unfortunately, however, Kuresawa puts Miyano in a position to reveal his relationship to Tashiro before he's ready to do so. In our OVA, episode thirteen, Chika and Giana share some of their past in the world of reading and writing fanfiction after Hanzawa makes a lovely point about enjoying what you like at any age. In this episode of Shoujo Sundae, Giana, Chika, and Carola and Amanda of The Yaoi Shelf review episodes seven through nine of Sasaki & Miyano! In episode seven, Hirano plays the role of fairy godfather to Sasaki by leaving him alone to play cards with Miyano. Amanda reminisces about how they would tiptoe around communicating their feelings to a crush back when they were Miyano's age. In this episode of Shoujo Sundae, Chika, Giana, and Pearl Low, founder of Orange Blossom Studio and the creator of Wheels & Roses, review episodes four through six of Sasaki and Miyano! In episode four, Sasaki's evident deepening feelings for Miyano has everyone rooting for him! The accidental kamedan scene brings forth incredible tension between Sasaki and Miyano. Sasaki grabbing Miyano through the window before Ogasawara can pat his head stirs mixed feelings. Are Sasaki's and Miyano's random meetups truly by happenstance? In episode five, Sasaki's reiteration of his confession to Miyano in the shade as flowers fall all around them showcases his bravery and confidence in his feelings. In this episode of Shoujo Sundae, Chika, Giana, and Colleen of Colleen's Manga Recs review episodes one through three of Ooku: The Inner Chambers. In episode one, Mizuno's story is a mesmerizing one to follow. Yoshimune's approach as Shogun is praised. The darkness woven throughout the Ooku is both intriguing and disturbing. In episode two, we meet the sweet and responsible Arikoto, whose life is forever changed upon “visiting” the Ooku. We also meet Lady Kasuga, who makes a permanent home in Hot Fudge after forcing Arikoto to stay at the Ooku by literally any means possible. In episode three, we learn more about Iemistu and Arikoto's life at the Ooku. In this episode of Shoujo Sundae, Chika and Giana review episodes ten to twelve of My Happy Marriage. In episode ten, Kudo is commended for his passion and determination to stay by Miyo's side. It was quite a shock to learn that Miyo had more immediate family, and also Arata's weapon of choice in his duel with Kudo. Miyo's dishonesty with Kudo upsets both Chika and Giana. In episode eleven, Giana shows appreciation for Miyo's courage to stand up to Arata, even in small ways. In this episode of Shoujo Sundae, Giana and Chika review episodes four to six of My Happy Marriage with Pete and Miles of the What Do You Say Anime podcast. In episode seven, justice certainly tastes like a sweet sundae as everyone celebrates the Saimori's downfall. Hazuki brings, as Miles points out, a new, interesting pace to this anime as a far more upbeat, energetic character to a more generally reserved cast. In this episode of Shoujo Sundae, Chika and Giana review episodes twenty-four and twenty-five of Fruits Basket (2019). It's finale time! In episode 24, Kyo's true form is shocking to Chika and Giana for reasons you wouldn't expect. Kyo's mother's delicate treatment of Kyo, and especially his rosary, tugged at the girls' heartstrings. Tohru's ability to allow the way she cares for Kyo trump the fear she has of his true form makes Giana “a wreck”. In episode 25, Chika credits Yuki for how much work he put into resisting his revulsion to the cat spirit. Giana takes the opportunity to fangirl over Eric Vale one last time. The lack of information about the aftermath of the reveal of Kyo's true form leaves lots of lingering questions. Kagura and Kazuma leaving without saying goodbye after everything that occurred the previous night leaves a bitter taste in this week's sundae.
