The Spin Chagrin, a concept that finds Frank having to watch a movie he's never seen before based on the random spin of a wheel filled with off-the-wall genres, continues into its fourth year. All the categories are quotables from Frank himself. In this episode, Frank's category was "Reverse the Undead Curse.” For this category, he watched and reviewed a multitude of movies despite only declaring one as the Chagrin movie, 2019's Japanese Ringu sequel Sadako.

In this episode of Shoujo Sundae, Giana and Chika review the first three episodes of Kimi Ni Todoke! In episode one, Kuronuma Sawako struggles to interact with her classmates after being branded as cursed because of her resemblance to Sadako from the horror film The Ring. Her classmates even refer to her as “Sadako”. Despite this, she is able to speak with a popular boy, Shouta Kazehaya, who invites her to the school's test of courage event. Through this, Sawako becomes friendly with two more classmates: Yoshida Chizuru and Yano Ayane. In episode two, Sawako leaves her umbrella to cover a puppy left out in the rain on the way to school, and, later, Kazehaya decides to adopt him. The next day, Sawako's class has a seating arrangement change, and nobody wants to end up with their desk near hers. Kazehaya, Chizu, Ayane, and Ryuu choose to sit near her, bringing her to tears. In episode three, Kazehaya and Sawako chat after school, and Kazehaya brings his new puppy, Maru-chan, along. He learns that she daydreams about teaching others. The next day, Kazehaya asks Sawako for help with schoolwork, and the rest of the class flocks over to be tutored by her. She smiles genuinely, taking her classmates off guard. Ayane and Chizu overhear rumors about themselves and are told by the girls spreading them that they were started by Sawako. Grab your spoon, and let's dig in! This episode's audio was edited by the wonderful PJ of the Kawaii Desuppointment podcast. beacons.ai/kawaiidesupod Note from Giana: Apologies for any background noise! My apartment by a busy intersection (in addition to some noise from neighbors) has been less than ideal for recording, but I'm planning to move to a quieter place in February 2025. Adam Grant;Cranes made by Japanese girl: In 1955 a thirteen-year-old Japanese girl died of radiation-induced leukemia. Sadako Sasaki was one of many who suffered the after-effects of those bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945. Japanese myth has it that cranes live for a thousand years, and anyone who folds 1000 paper cranes will have a wish granted. So, during her illness, Sadako folded paper cranes, and with each crane she wished that she would recover from her illness. She managed 644 cranes before she left this life behind. Sadako's classmates folded the remaining 356 cranes so that she could be buried with a thousand paper cranes. Friends collected money from children all over Japan to erect a monument to Sadako in Hiroshima's Peace Park. The inscription reads:This is our cry. This is our prayer. Peace on earth. Each year people place paper cranes at the base of the statue to recall the tragedy of war and to celebrate humanity's undying hope for peace. In some places around the world, people fold paper cranes each holiday season to use as decorations and as a symbol of their deep desire for lasting peace.Calling long distance: man calling wife from airport phone booth, operator said 1 minute left, man hurried but cut off before he could tell wife he loved her; no more coins, as he was walking away the phone rang, he picked it up and operator said that after he hung up his wife said she loved you, I thought you'd want to know.++++Join Our Community:https://www.facebook.com/DrTimJordanhttps://www.instagram.com/drtimjordan/https://www.linkedin.com/in/tim-jordan-md-79799120b/
Byrd, Trev, Lux and Kevin take a deep dive into Sadako's well to discuss the first four Japanese theatrical films in the Ring franchise: Ring (1998), Spiral (1998), Ring 2 (1999) and Ring 0: Birthday (2000). In addition to a lively talk about all four films and the film makers involved, we discuss the origins of the series as a series of novels by Koji Suzuki, the birth of the J-Horror boom at the turn of the century, and how the Ring franchise became a global phenomenon, making Sadako one of the most iconic movie monsters of all time. So kick back, enjoy the conversation and try to pass this podcast to someone else within 7 days!
The world is in dire need of stories that show how some people have met war and devastation with hope. The folding of origami cranes is said to bring the granting of a wish, for life, for recovery. Jan shares the story of a little girl named Sadako and a lesson of love and art to lift us all.
“Sixty-nine, dudes!” And now that the obvious joke is out of the way: Christopher Riner returns as a second-time guest because Jake Hambrick was busy with family (good for him!). But Mr. Riner can't help but ask, “Why me?” The film he discusses with Nathan, Kamen Rider: The Next, is a secret J-horror movie complete with a Sadako knockoff. (Making it accidentally perfect for Halloween season). To say it's a far cry from its predecessor, Masked Rider: The First, would be an understatement. It's dour, convoluted, and confusing. But it does do one thing better than The First. What's that? Let's just say it made Chris think Koichi Sakamoto was involved with this movie. Directed by Hideo Nakata, the J-horror masterpiece Ringu was based on a book released a few years earlier and it tells the tale of the vengeful spirit of a child that comes out of the screen to kill you if you watch their Stan Brakhagesque cursed tape! Sadako's aesthetic has become an universal pop culture symbol for fear and the deadly presence of beings from the aftelife in relation to elements familiar to us and present in our daily lives, such as TV devices -- and VHS tapes.
